And don't get me started on zeroql or effortless. they were saved because they were pros. Zhu would have been saved too if he had any lan results to merit a reversal of his ban. He simply did what he wanted the entire 6 1/2 years it ran its course. Loadouts, did you vote for that? know anyone who did? QL was his game and he ran it into the ground.

i agree with you that the head guys at zenimax didn't help and got in the way, but for the core things added to the game, syncerror did what he wanted not caring about the results. (he could have reversed loadouts a week after, but his ego was too big to admit he was wrong)

Why the fuck is nobody taking Q3 back? Let's bring it back, put on some servers or something.

There are a handful of servers already online waiting to be populated, they have always been (at least in europe). Fire up cpma, open server browser, join the one with the lowest ping, "cv gameplay cq3", "cv map ztn3tourney1" and you're set. Sadly there are actually a few features that ql has over that solution. non-uniform hitsounds, timers for spectators and dmg numbers come to mind. Sadly the cpma devs did not provide sources for their mod (despite it being GPL'd), since they are apparently fucking bastards. Otherwise the community could fix those things and much more. Of course cpma in its current state has a few features over ql as well.

I've just installed the beta to try it out, and I've noticed some bugs/flaws already, namely, when I do ^(number) to enter a colored character, the black background (I play with cg_viewsize 85 due my big monitor) goes the same color im intending to write with... really weird stuff.

I've also noticed cg_drawCrosshairNames is stuck at 2, 1 does the same, 0 doesn't disable it (does the same)

cg_drawCrosshairNamesOpacity doesn't change the opacity. Tried to disable it as I attempted to play some T4 for old times sakes with some guy, since I don't need this distraction for 1v1, this didn't work as well. Im stuck with the crosshair name showing every time.

The hud bug: Already addressed by someone else in here, I managed to fix it manually by adjusting the AMMO and ARMOR offsets.

Flaws I've noticed a lot of people complaining about:

-Unabilty to know what maps are actually voteable on a particular server. You just can't know what maps are installed on there, so a lot of the maps that you try to vote wouldn't do nothing (it will say vote passed and nothing happens).

-Nick format. Great that we can change them again, but your steam nickname looks like a mess if you try to color it up with ^2 and so on.

I hope that the crosshair bug gets fixed, I can't stand names during a duel. Literally useless.

the crosshair names are now cg_enemyCrosshairNames and cg_teammateCrosshairnames with separate opacity commands for each. opacity isn't currently working when looking at people with colored names, but will apparently get fixed in a patch in a week or 2. To get cg_teammateCrosshairnames to work you have to disable the new boxes above teamates heads, which is like cg_teammatenames or something.

Settings -> Input (which is the first pane to come up) - on the right hand column is the option to bind for 'Voice Chat' though you have to scroll down a bit to see it even on 1080p.

I'm in the same boat. My premium lapsed a couple of months ago because I've been busy. I would have glady paid another year for pro subscription. But now I have to pay $10 so that they could remove my 7 years of stats and people who never paid get it for free.

I was travelling in America, got back home yesterday and found out about this.

It doesn't really work like that. People might not necessarily use twitch chat. People might not necessarily check ESR or the QL forums. People actually might actually prefer to steer well clear of all 3 because they are generally full of fucktards anyway.

On top of this, you have the people who might not necessarily have played QL for the last X months/years despite having been a long term subscriber in the past. They come back now and they encounter this? Where was the "QL will cost 10,00 $ on steam unless you sign up for the beta" news announcement on the QL launcher splash screen? Where was the "Hey we're migrating to Steam guys! (and it will cost 10,00 $ unless you sign up to the beta)" e-mail which should have been sent to all registered e-mail accounts?

The "urgency" on behalf of syncerror wasn't communicated via the right channels, and even then the key point (that unless you do this by X date, you will have to pay) has been completely and systematically absent from any communication.

Even if someone does see syncerror on twitch, read ESR and check the forums, as slunge pointed out above, at which point is it mentioned that "if you don't do this now you will need to pay 10,00 $ in the future"?

I myself already expressed my confusion at this apparently unnecessary urgency here, and as you can see, even Yakumo was completely unaware of any 10.00 $ shenanegens and his answer left me equal confused, so I just assumed it wasn't actually urgent at all, and planned to just migrate in 2016 at some point when I got back into QL.

Now syncerror is posting on ESR "hue hue gosh we never thought about this, pls contact support" and Yakumo is all "you might get lucky hue hue". Awesome.

I have tried to receive an actual answer to my query from QL support (namely Sasparillo), but all I've received so far was a copy/paste of the standard info message about the update, and two lines which did not actually engage my points. Here is my situation:

1. I was not a subscriber while using the standalone at the time of the update
2. I had not downloaded Quake Live through Steam in the past

however

3. I was a Pro subscriber for more than two years, from April 2013 until July 2015. Over that period, I paid a total of 120,44€ in subscriptions.

I am asking if, in light of the amount of time and money I spent as a former subscriber, I could receive Quake live on my steam account free of charge despite 1 and 2. I will send you my Steam account/e-mail in PM if you respond positively.

I do not go on IRC, and I do not follow update discussions on QL. All I do (or used to do) is play QL casually from time to time, and I had absolutely no idea that I would be put in the situation of having to pay for the game again if I did not switch to Steam prior to the update.

Eight Steam friends of mine can play QL for free because they downloaded it on Steam at one point. They have a total of 2.3 hours of play time combined. They never paid for the game, they did not host a server for two years and promote QL to other friends like I did. Yet as a customer who's invested 120,44€ into your game, I'm facing an obligation to pay again, and not them, due to an arbitrary decision that your company made and that I was not made aware of until after the fact.

Ten euros is not much. Yet I simply do not see why I should pay another 10€ to your company after already investing 120,44€ into the game. Some posters have said that it's only the price of two coffee cups -- well, I'll gladly pay for a coffee cup if I want to drink one, but I'm not going to pay again for the same coffee cup if the seller suddenly decides he wants me to pay him again, with the argument that "it's just the price of a coffee cup". The reason I've already paid as much as 120,44€ is that I wanted to not only host a server but also support the company behind the game I've enjoyed playing for years. I don't blame you for putting the 10€ price tag on Steam for new players, but I find it absolutely ludicrous to ask previous subscribers, which have put (way) more than 10€ into the game, to pay for it again while hundreds of thousands of other players can sit back and have it for free for an arbitrary reason. Frankly, if this decision to force previous subscribers like myself to pay the 10€ stands, I will not be interested in supporting your company now and in the future. If you do agree that something should be done for previous subscribers, I'll gladly forget the whole thing. I certainly don't have my hopes up, but feel free to prove me wrong.

That's not what I said at all, I suggest you re-read it before mindlessly venting at me when I'm trying to HELP someone get free access.

For whatever reason, they're *currently* having to do this by hand (whether this changes later or not we'd have to wait and see)

Obviously email addresses of subscribed users are stored somewhere, that doesn't mean they have access to that data right at this current time even in raw form let alone with any coded utilities.

And if you didn't link your steam account already they have NO way to know what steamID has any connection to an old account, as the client now uses only steam information and users change name at any time, it never takes email addresses, and steam email addresses (if it can even get those through the steam API I don't know) won't necessarily be the ones used to sign up for the original QL account anyway.

My point is that it shouldn't be up to US to contact THEM via e-mail about linking our accounts to steam thanks to some obscure advice on ESR threads or twitch chat screenshots. They have our e-mail addresses, they know which ones are or were associated to pro accounts. They have ALL the information they need to provide us with an efficient solution, they don't need ANYTHING else.

They just needed to send an email to all the pro accounts with a notification of the changes, with a link to "convert to steam" where you're taken to a page, login, provide, your steam ID and click "LINK STEAM ID". How about a "convert to steam" button in the game UI itself too, just for good measure? Boom, done, solved. Zero drama.

But of course anything remotely resembling a solution of any kind is fucking kryptonite for syncerror innit, and instead the community needs to resort to what is basically word of mouth to get this sorted. This would be considered archaic and laughable in 2005. It's 2015.

No h8 m8, I appreciate all the positive effort and help you have invested in QL over the years, but you also have a habit of making stuff up to cover any holes (?) and it gets quite annoying.

I try to avoid getting into arguments too much over 'thing that should have been done in the past', though if anything no matter how minor has actually been done towards that at all and a person wasn't aware of it for some reason I'll share what they missed so they're at least informed they missed it.

Posts I put up to try and help people deal with just the situation as it actually is now, as I'm trying to help them actually deal with the reality of the situation. And maybe some reasoning as to why that currently is the situation because some people like to understand a bit of why.

Because my goal isn't to bash anyone for why this has come to be, but simply try and help the user with their problem at the time.

yeah, id do have the e-mail addresses of former subscribers and informing them about the "new final" release would have been a great way of getting in contact with probable quake live players and encouraging them to test the "new" quake live steam release.

Instead they proud themselves for "hinting towards converting to steam" which is a poor excuse for not communicating clearly what is about to happen and pissing people off who have all motivation to pay and play the game.

Q3 is a pain in the ass as you have to install mods then configure the game through archaic menus. Steam QL has spectator features, can be configured even by a newbie who doesn't know how to create and edit a .cfg file, and is centralized. Also has been the most populated Quake game since it came out. Q3 also feels like shit.

Quake 3 sucks br0. Sorry to say to break it to you, but it generally isn't very good compared to any modernized game. Just because you became intimately aware of every nuance doesn't make it decent to the general playerbase. Vanilla Quake 3 with no mods is an utter fucking joke by any Quake players standards. So, they didn't contribute to the death of Quake 3, they contributed to the death of the mods of Quake 3 which were doomed from the get go because they were only truly accessible to people who had spent years in the game. Walk a new player through all the configuration and network options of CPMA, see how interested they are after you're still explaining shit 30 minutes later.

And it's worthless because you don't know if the server has custom maps. There is no cvar that will tell you what actual maps are voteable on the server.

- to play modded q3, you need to run exactly two .exe files
- the options menu in cpma is very similar to the one in ql
- I consider GTV and multiview to be better features than health bars and zoomfov values
- Ql is centralized, yet you have to use 3rd party tools such as irc in order to play pickups and tournaments the same way as in Q3
- Q3 is actually much smoother than ql, give cpma 1.48 a try before you start talking out of your ass again

250fps at one rez is the same as 250fps at another. If you used to get any drops that's a different matter.
Though there is the idea of matching mouse CPI relatively to screen resolution so there is less interpolation going on.

The way they handled the whole switch to steam situation was very sneaky, they did yes suggest everyone to update to before the update didn't state why... Now we know. This was to catch people out who didn't know about the update, didn't want to install steam, or simply didn't get around to it. To charge people who have been playing this game for years in a lot of cases simply because they didn't install before date x is in my opinion is very wrong. You can say "oh they never subscribe so they didn't contribute anything" but a lot of people would not have had the means to subscribe, either simply cannot afford it, their parents didn't agree to subscribe or whatever. They did contribute it might just not have been financially even though this is the only way devs care that you contribute. I myself am stuck in this situation, I have no qualms about paying as it is only £6.99 and it is definitely worth paying for, I just feel it is very unfair for a lot of players who will be in the same boat.

Quake Live Steamworks Launch

Today marks a new beginning for Quake Live. Last year we expanded our platform to Steam, and today we have retired our old launcher and services in favor of integrating a robust array of Steamworks alternatives. We are now fully utilizing Steam for Friends, Chat, Lobbies, Voice Chat, Server Browser, Statistics, Achievements, Anti-cheat, Trading Cards, and Workshop.

Steamworks Overview

Steam accounts are now used for all player interactions. Players may now use their Steam display name and profile avatar in-game, and still uniquely identify players by SteamId and Profile pages. Steam Statistics will track your progress in-game, and you will instantly be awarded achievements as you earn them, rather than as matches are completed. Improve your teamplay communication by chatting with players using our new Voice Chat. As you play online you can use the player admin menu to select players and send them Friend Invites, and right click on your friends in the Friend List to view their Statistics and Achievements progress.

Start Match & Server Hosting

Our new Start Match feature allows players to run their own Listen Servers which support Internet, LAN, and local bot-match play. And now it is easier for a group of friends to play either Internet or LAN matches through the new Lobby feature. Have a party of friends join one player’s lobby, and the lobby leader can then join an Internet match through the Match Browser or start a listen server of their own – party members in the lobby will automatically migrate to the server so that your friends are all together when it is time to play.

To spawn persistent Dedicated Servers, we have now made the Linux server files freely available on Steam Tools.

Our server functionality has also been greatly expanded, allowing players to define unique rulesets we call Factories, and allow players to define map pools of varying Game Modes and Factories to run on the same server. what i meant is, what is really new ? there is croush-sliding, grappling hook and voice chat for expl, they didnt really mention all of that in a list.

Heres a very unofficial list of things found for now -

crouch sliding, grappling hook, voice chat, new menu system (with per-option reset to defaults), the whole factory system that lets you change game mode on the fly (if server hasn't disabled it)

actf - (factory): Arena CTF, QW/Q2/CCTF style CTF with grappling hook and runes!


new op commands use /? in game to see list

ban - permbans a player
tempban
addmod (replaces op and i believe is stored on the server so is permanent unless removed)
addadmin - similar to addmod but grants more power
demote (removes privelages)

callvote (and the alias cv) changes :

use just \callvote to list options, but here are the new things -

callvote <thing that needs options> will list the options available.

callvote map <mapname> <factory> - vote for factory (game mode) as well as map
callvote loadouts ON/OFF (default off for most things including FFA ! )
callvote ammo GLOBAL/WEAP (universal ammo on/off)
callvote timers ON/OFF toggle the floating pie chart item timers

callvote fraglimit
callvote timelimit
callvote clientkick - lets you kick by a clientID but will show name and not number in the vote people see now so it's actually useful.


/players now shows steamID for the players as well

Voice comms - set up in steam settings -> voice, then
/bind v +voice
(v is the default bind)

in team games once the game has started only your own team can hear each other (unless the server sets g_allTalk 1)

Question: How do I keep my real fov in spec, but enable zoom (with my zoom fov value) when the player zooms?

I find seeing whatever fov the player is playing with pretty useless, but I do want to know when the guy im spectating is zooming (with my settings).

you can't, sorry, there is only cg_specfov 0/1


0 atm leaves it at the last fov you were playing on before spectating, and you can change that at any time still with a bind or cg_fov in the console

1 follows the fov of the player you watch.

it's not transmitting their +zoom state in the network data, it's only transmitting the fov they're on at the time.

I don't see why you'd think that's useless when it includes the exact zoom fov that they zoom to... It's not sending the value of their cg_fov its showing whatever their fov is at the time :)

It's not the kind of thing I imagine they'd look at any more, but I was hoping that cg_specview 0 would trigger your own cg_weaponconfig things so you had your preferences. Will have to wait and see whatever may happen in the future if they have to do any other fixes.

I used to enjoy the fact that when specting the fov would change automatically to whatever weaponconfig I had for each weapon

I just don't care what fov other people are using, spectating in other settings that aren't mine is annoying, so I just wanted to have my zoomfov value and the zoom be triggered whenever someone zoomed, I find this essential.

They haven't all seemed to work when spectating since the previous update months ago, it was odd though, sometimes it did for some weapons for me.

I was hoping it would get fixed to work for all, without bringing back the bad delay when changing as you play, if cg_specfov was 0.

You can still have colours in your nickname. You have to edit your name in your steam profil though... (With the old colour commands)

I struggled a bit with pressing ^ in the console... copied it to the clipboard then :D... i believe there is a smarter way though...

You can create a qlnick.cfg file in your config folder and add the /steamnick .... command in there. Then you can simply /exec qlnick.cfg

You can also put that into gamestart.cfg and gameend.cfg to change you nick back and forth when you start/leave a game.

- Install extraQL 2.0
- Create the two cfg files: gamestart.cfg and gameend.cfg in your baseq3 folder
- Then type only "steamnick [Your nick with colour codes]" (without the "" and [ ] ofc) in gamestart.cfg
example: steamnick ^4Ship^5OO^4pi
- And "steamnick [Your nick without colour codes] in gameend.cfg
example: steamnick Shipoopi

So basically q3 is now on steam twice, whereas one version has been GPL'd, has proper mod support (good mods inclusive) and costs 20 bucks (which doesn't really matter) and the other version has none of those things, comes with proper steam integration as well as a playerbase and costs 10 bucks. Funnily enough, neither version on steam comes with support for decent operating systems, yet free as in free beer and fully functional packages for q3+mods sit in the repositories of multiple major linux distros ready for anybody to install (provided they have a pak0.pk3 file, which isn't hard to get a hold off for gratis, and can be argued to be ethically correct).

Not only does ql not even try to compete with reflex or other upcoming titles in the subgenre, but it instead tries to compete with the 16-year old game it is a clone of and is just barely winning.

Who cares? I guess we do, people who played quake as kids\teens and watched it die after 2003-4 and who put so much faith in ql when it launched. I know devs screwed up. But its still quake and now its free from moronic development decisions and restrictions. Its the closest thing we ever got to freedom of other quakes since 15 years.

Now we have a clean slate. We can finally mod ql, toy with options, we have no LOLadouts or item timers and hopefully we can finally play this game for fun and not for stats elo etc.
And vac should do its job fine, even though they unbanned all cheaters (ultimate fuck-you-all parole lololololo).
Cant we give ql some time and see how it all works out.

Bottom line is this: if you love quake you will stand beside it or its next iteration. If you dont, kindly leave it alone. As many of you pointed out already, the world moved on, genre moved on, etc etc. Fine. But for me and many other quakers this game will always be the pinnacle of multiplayer fps.

Its like that with every QL update. No matter what someone will get pissed. Make no mistake, for me getting all 6-yr match history and stats deleted was a wrong move. Fucked up move. The point is, apparently they decided that they wither port QL to steam with loss of all hands onboard the old one, or they close it down.
I too was pissed after seeing beta and finished product. But hey, we should make with what we have. And hope that Quake 5 will be no CoD.

There's no pleasing some ppl. Aw well, like I said - nobody holds anybody in QL. To be honest lots of my friends said: Screw it, my awards which I were proud of, my statsthat showed a connection to the game and experience are gone, no friendlists, clans gone, let's get our asses outta here. And I dont blame them, moreover I have some naughty feelings about all of that as well (to put it mildly). Still, It was expected that this update will alienate even more people.

What's broken is broken, especially when you try to fix it with hammer and chainsaw. QL got broken in 2010-11 and since then the devs got more and more trippy. That last update with hmg and loadouts was the last straw that killed QL momentum for good.

It was a ghost game with no hopes of recovery. We can thank some primadonna parts of this community and some lead developers for that. So they did the only sane thing: Made QL steam-powered for good.

This game now is a loss leader of sorts. It wont get much money from sales (although I hope it does - but if it didnt since 2009 theres small hope for the fortunes to change. On the other hand, market is a biatch and totally unpredictable).

The point of QL now is to attract people to other Z property and probably intervine it with future Quake 5 release. Its role is obviously totally minuscule, but it was apaprently decided that killing the QL would be bad rep. Bad rep for Z, bad rep for id, bad rep for dev team. So QL got put on Steam, abandoned and that's that.

Also, imagine QL now being testbed for developing future Q5 multiplayer.

No stats = a loss but also a win. No more : I DARE YOU TO DEFY MY GREATNESS I HAVE 45% ACC YOU HAVE 30 BOW DOWN AND RECEIVE MY FISTAGE! But also loss of detailed info about your progress and all of QL history. So kind of a mixed bag here.

No ELO = wild ride as it was in older Quakes. It means no stat whoring but also means wildly unfair matches at times.

No friendlist ported to Steam = somebody should rail Sponge 4 times and MG him while he's shopping at the mall for this atrocity.

No clans = everything has to be done from scratch, if ever.

Weirdo nick coloring issues = you know it so lets just skip this issue in silence(p)

No server bots (?) = afaik there are no bots and wont be...again depends on your point of view. For me it is a mixed bag as well. Some of these bots were abusive and useless, others were less useless but still not useful enough.

Gibs = as I understand it theyre in paid version? If so, big FUCK YOU to devs. Yeah, pay for gibs. Totally pay for them.

The list goes on and on...

So we walked from one mess into another mess. Etc etc.
After a few months we will know where it all went.

*take a happy q3 playerbase that enjoyed to craft the game
*remove mod support to make them believe that game support is real
*charge them for what they already had
*change business plan several times so Zenimax could earn lunch money from people who believe that q5 is coming
*charge them again for what they already had

I don't know what area you are in, but a more flexible server browser might help you some http://www.esreality.com/post/2778433/server-browser-tool/

Things may improve as automated dedicated server launching systems have been written by people now, and some hosts should start offering it as a pre-installed option, so some may pop up near you if you're lucky even if if you don't decide to set one up yourself.

You could always run a listen server too, you just need to open up the relevant ports as mentioned when you set it under 'Start a match', but not everyone's too happy playing vs someone on 0ms of course.
