if you don't want to get hit in a cage you shouldn't do, it's fucking huge. so annoying when you read crap about great defense, when all they are doing is back pedaling with some lateral movement. That's impressive in an enclosed location, something I wish ufc would opt for, maybe not as small as a cage rage, cage but nothing as stupid sized as that.

Except that if anything we're seeing less LnP than we used to and Machida is a bad example of a move toward decision fighting as he's becoming a finisher. Hughes-Serra was an example of an old-school, dull fight. We see far less of that kind of inactivity on the ground these days with exciting prospects like Maia.

Cage is just bad for attacking as you cant corner your opponent like in a ring.

Neither Thiago or Rashad are strikers.

Check japanese mma, their main point of scoring is attempts to finish the fight, and take downs with no effort to finish the fight or do something scores zero points. Also, elbows in the ground are not allowed (but knees and/or soccer kicks are in some organizations) so you cant just lay there and touch him with your elbows in hope of a cut, you have to go for submissions or posture up to do some real pounding. Stalling the fight gets you yellow card that takes 10% out of your purse.

Funny how quite a few people are discouraged by Machida's uprising. Machida has always been good for the sport, as a calculated fighter who simply waits for an opening and pounces on it very diligently rather than charging and hoping to come out on top that way. I think people have simply gotten too used to seeing fighters like Andrei Arlovski or Anderson Silva dominate the main event cards since the UFC went mainstream.

At the same time, though, you have to carefully measure your degree of aggression in these fights, especially considering that the format can severely punish very minor mistakes at such a high level of fighting. I mean, Arlovski had failed to do this properly against Sylvia when he first lost the belt to him, walking right into a right hook that cost him the fight. Machida is clearly avoiding such a risk by waiting and, in the meantime, carefully observing his opponent to pick up on anything he could use when he finally attacks or perhaps when he has a chance to counter. Very smart fighter, and I hope to see more fighters like him come to the UFC in the near future.

yeah some fighters are brilliant at timing, exploding when they need to, or trying up when someone imposes themselves (the best are good at both obviously) but time and time again you'll see where a fighter doesn't want to go to ground and isn't that slick just abuse the size of the cage with the odd 3 punch and leg kick thrown in (to shut the ref up) keep out of the way

They come in 10-20lbs heavier on fight day. Same-day weigh-ins are a bad idea because fighters just fight while dehydrated from making the cut, making themselves far more vulnerable to brain damage.

Why? Fighters will cut weight regardless of what you do, short of weighing them everyday for months.

from what I recall, UFC only has 5 classes that are not as strict as those in other combat sports so it may be less of a problem but even so, as it stands you can have a match-up (though an extreme example) where a fighter has a 70lb difference in the heavies (I recall remarks from top fighters about this, Randy was one for sure but I can't remember the others) that's nuts for a combat sport that allows grappling and ground fighting

Just check the boxer Paul Williams, he comes in at 145-7 then balloons up to pushing 170, fucking extreme

Machida was winning that fight until Shogun landed the punch that pretty much ended it, so I'm still not sure what you're talking about. Just like the first one, it could have gone either way regardless of how the rest of the fight up until that point was. That was pretty much shown as Machida was solid almost the whole time, but keep in mind that he was also up against an equally solid fighter that could also turn the tables at anytime.

I'll be honest, I've loved Machida's style for awhile now, but honestly, seeing all of both of these fighters previous fights, I wanted Machida to win, but expected Rashad's quick, powerful hands to actually take this one.
I thought maybe, just maybe it would go to decision.

I did not expect Rashad to just plain get his ass beat.

The aspect that most surprised me was the way Machida shrugged off and threw around Rashad in the clinch. I thought he might struggle there.

Yes he has. His footwork, control of distance, use of the unorthodox low hands and high head stance (instead of a boxer's high hands) and judo/sumo throws is a unique combination that pushes the sport in new directions.

His style and approach is different that's all. You can't put the guy in the same category has someone like Bruce Lee and the Gracie family, that's just plain ignorance.

The point I'm trying to make is this. Machida has been able to effectively use his Karate skills because he trains in various martial arts, which is something Bruce Lee advocated, which is the whole point of MMA. History has shown us that BJJ & Wrestling are fundamental. Without either of those Machida would end up like the Karate and Sumo masters we saw in early MMA events, demolished.

Since I've been watching MMA there has always been guys bringing something different, this is just the evolution of MMA. Look at guys like Karo Parisyan, lots of people now use that wizzer uchi mata throw now, Randy couture brought dirty boxing and greco roman wrestling, Barnett brought catch wrestling, Sakuraba destroyed 4 gracies who comes from japanese wrestling which can be traced back to the UK, Crocrop showed us what a world class kickboxer can do who trains in wrestling & BJJ. The list is endless.

If Machida is bringing nothing new please point to a similar fighter. He belongs in the same category as those two and in fact is doing something more impressive by redefining MMA at a time when it's far more developed.

I dont think Machida is redefining that much of anything. He is impressive because he does what he does so well, but I dont think you are going to see karatekas flocking in to MMA or wannabe fighters going too much into karate, like was the case when Royce and the wrestlers were dominating. Mainly because in Shotokan you wont even learn to fight untill after 3 to 5 or so years, up untill that it's learning the kata, stances etc. whereas jj and wrestling are styles that enhance your fighting ability a lot quicker.

Machida is also not some average guy who just happened to pick the most effective technique, he started Shotokan when he was like 3 years old, and not in some douchebag local dojo either but with private lessons from a master (he's father).

Most people start training martial arts closer to 10 years old or over. If you go to Shotokan at that point, you are going to lose many valuable years learning useless stuff, stuff that machida learned as a very very young kid, thus not wasting the more important part of he's progression as a fighter.

Fedor, for a well known example, has mastered footwork, control of distance, use of low hands and judo/sambo throws years ago. Check he's 3rd fight with nogueira for a small sample.

what's more notable is how wide they are, couple that with his southpaw stance and you have a nightmare of a situation working against you

I stand by Machida being every bit as good, Shogun's just ridiculous as well and I'm a fan of both. Machida looked like he'd spent too little time training his karate as his stance was sloppy and unlike his former style but Shogun is a deserving champ, however when I posted this Shogun could barely beat Mark Coleman and Machida and Shogun are head and shoulders above the rest of the LHWs. If Rampage wins vs Shogun then maybe I'll take back the Machida worship.

Rampage can get another broken ribs by Rua, so can Evans - the only one who can realistically beat him is Lyoto, Spider if he diseases to move up to 205 since his 'friend' ain't a champ no more, and maybe Jon Jones if he happens be so good as his last fights.

first of all, it was clear from the outset that shogun was the best LHW in the world. has been since 2004, 2005. he had surgery on his left knee at least twice after he won the PRIDE GP, also the freak accident with coleman. this means he had a hard road regaining his shape and getting a title shot and finally get back what's rightfully his, the belt in the biggest MMA org

secondly, i still believe shogun is tied for best LHW ever with the wanderlei that fought rampage in 2003 and 2004. just watch these fights, the striking, the pace of the fight is something we just havent seen since. sadly wanderlei had a steep decline, he is now but a shell of the fighter he once was, but back then he was better than any LHW up to this point, barring perhaps shogun

third, i wouldnt count out rogerio nogueira, he was always among the top5 LHW fighters and he looked real sharp against luis cane. i think shogun takes this, but it will be a harder fight than against machida


and yes i agree, machida looked a little sloppy saturday.. i still think shogun would have won it, either way. if he would just have let his hands go in the first fight, it would have been a KO as well, sooner or later
