normally ELO doesn't have a max level. However, this seems to go to 100.

It's possible they simply set the highest ELO, some threshhold or some range to be 100.

Elo isn't really a min/max thing, but more of a system that is relative to players.

edit: looking at the numbers here, I don't think this is an elo system.

I assure you, the skillrating numbers tell you nothing, and any schema you come up with to interpret them will turn out to be incorrect.

Empirically I've noticed that the sv_skillrating numbers go up after I've won a few games and go down when I've lost a few. Is that a coincidence?

Practically the sv_skillrating numbers are translated, server-wide, to determine if an opponent is skillmatched or not. There are five levels of skill matching (not to be confused with tiers). The lowest skillmatch which won't even display the server for you. The "Your Skill Higher" skill match that constitutes two "levels". The "More Callenging" which is one level above and last "Very Difficult" which is one level above the prior one.

What if you join a high skill server play on the really good team win like 15 games in a row but every game you have like 5kills and 25deaths ? Why would your skill rating go up based on wins?

Since the method id is using is based on ELO it only calculates all players ELOs and depending on if you lost/win adds or subtracts your score.

i'm unsure if it works that way. i mostly play pub tdm and have a win ratio of under 60%. still my skillrating fluctuates between 95 and 100. so i'd say there has to be some other factors here aswell.

I've run repeated experiments on this and that's what the evidence tells me.

You can see powers of the people listed on the server with /pb_power , but these are 8 alphanumeric characters with no clear way to identify how they translate to sv_skillrating.

However id uses it in their own way for quake live ratings. Anecdotal evidence would suggest that they have changed the way this works quite a few times.

the so-called 'power rating' is just the name given to the internal quantification of skill - it's completely separate and nothing to do with pb's power rating for player priviledges.

neither myself nor anyone from id has ever said the skill rating has anything to do with pb, so it must be you who has incorrectly made the leap from one to the other.

aside:

since you mention it, the 8 'characters' are the last 8 hexadecimal digits of the players' GUIDs. the full GUID is 32 digits, but the last 8 are enough to be uniquely identifiable afaik.

Since you seem to have a good hand with the guys at id. You shouldn't convince them about tihs. A much more appropriate rating system would have be based on TrueSkill.

The problem right now with ELO and QL is that ELO doesn't really converge to a hypothetical skill level (\mu) but fluctuates heavily depending on your current win/loss streak. While the TS system would quickly converge (\sigma -- the standard deviation (uncertainty) of your skill level would go to 0) to a hypothetical skill level and then slowly change upwards/downwards depending on your improvement.

I actually have a python code for calculation of TS aimed at matchmaking for pickup games and it's working good in theory but hard to automate in practice because of the limited data mining possiblities from the web interface/game.

I guess you could go with DWZ which is a based on ELO, but that stuff is quite complecated.

The PB "power" doesn't have anything to do with the ELO ranking (which you call power rating). Its a remnant from old times when kicking people from servers with PB was popular. Now, as you can see in the screenshot, it's more of a dummy variable that's set to 1.

The 8 characters is a GUID (= Globally Unique IDentifier) number that doesn't change and sticks to a players PB for identification purposes.

sv_skillrating is an average of the players power ratings in the server. the tiers are just superficial classifications of the underlying power ratings, they're not used for anything except the up arrow/down arrow/tick on the server browser.

Yes this is true of course, that's it's the average. That's why you join a green empty server to have your own sv_skillrating not the average of your and other players'.

after a bad day or just a lot of close losses against similar skilled players it goes down a lot. 25 is the worst i have seen so far and 47 was the best that i checked

btw I check my skillrating almost every time i join an empty server, as well as when someone connects.
4 out of 5 times, skillrating shoots through the roof, going well over 40 or 50.
I've had some well known tdm-ers joining my server and when i politely point out that i'm a noob; and not really a challenge at all for them; i get the following responses: "testing new cfg", "no no this is his gf playing", "there were no other servers available", "i always rape noobs for my first match of the day", "aww c'mon it'll be fun!", etc.

Rating system is bollocks (for team modes at least). Ideally, 100 should be achievable only by 2-3 players in the world, yet half of tier 4 has skillrating 100.
For some reason I have ca rating of 96, yet I feel like a noob on servers with much lower average skillrating. The system just doesn't work properly.

It's fucked up. I'm flattered that the game tells me i'm fine playing a ca match with Killsen, Vor, Slaine, Juvenile and other terrific chaps of similar skill, but yeah, no fucking thanks, i'd like to play games where i actually, you know, stand a damn chance. The way things work right now, i'm basically rolling dice every time i connect to a server - don't know if i'll be up against people worse than me, on my level, or a bunch of rapists that will violate me.

The previous system wasn't ideal, but at least it worked to some extent. I can't even remember when was the last time i saw grey (unrated notwithstanding), yellow and red ca servers.

rating system is useless, as for example i play mostly agains players who are much better than me, and obviously i get raped most of times...

I have like 85 skillrating in FFA (wtf?) yet I have hardly ever won any matches (I usually join games a bit late and find myself facing people ten times better than I am plus I don't take it too seriously and leave music on etc).
In 75% of my FFA matches I was like 4th-3rd (or maybe 2nd) with a 1.0 or lower k/d.

In CA my skillrating goes up and down all the bloody time (was at 80 two weeks ago and I'm at 40-50 now, even went down one tier, and now it's going up again).

Haven't played enough TDM/Duel/CTF for now.
