nice to see some mapping contests. if i look to LvL maps http://lvlworld.com , i see only arty and colorful maps. the mappers always do new textures and colorful things but mostly gameplay isnt there.

with mapping contests like these we can get maybe some playable maps.

Good gameplay requires help from good players willing to test the maps and give feedback ;)

Nice. Are there testing servers available for maps?
Pretty difficult to playtest a TDM/CTF map properly with just bots..
Probably difficult to get enough players together willing to try alphas anyway, but it's handy.

10 weeks is a tight limit, especially for a quality map. I suppose it can't go on forever though :)

Testing servers will definitely be available as maps enter the alpha/beta stages. I should have some up in the US and EU; I'll make sure to update this post when they go online. Check out the FAQ as well.

The previous competition was 6 weeks and produced some really great maps, but enough people complained that I've decided to extend this one to 10 weeks. I'm hoping that will be enough time for the entire idea->mapping->testing process to occur.

10 weeks is enough time, some of the mappers taking part will remember Turtlemapping - a 1 week challenge to create a Q3 map, quite a few of those turned out reasonable looking :)

In the end the point of the competition is to produce high quality extremely playable maps, so if that means the deadline needs to be extended or rules need to be changed then so be it.

Yeah but a good map from this contest can easily be ported to QL if/when id allow user made maps :)

And if they never do, then its hopefully there will be another few good maps for the Q3 community, its all win!

(or maybe the top 3~) put on any public servers?

All the maps in the competition are downloadable at the end, so anyone is welcome to use the maps on their Q3 servers. I do know some of the maps were used in the recent Q3 Clanbase competitons though.

this is great, but i am not sure what mapping for a dead game is going to accomplish. maybe you should try to work out a deal with id to do this for ql. (yeah i know, lots of problems, still...)

If there is ever a QL mapping comp, or if Id decide to look for maps from the community, then these could be the front runners :)

I think the fact that SyncError is a judge is a good sign and might mean we'll see these maps in QL one day.

After the first comp, a couple of the mappers were noticed by id software, as proof of that take a look at the drama post where phantazm's map is on the duel maplist. I'm sure some of this contest's entries will eventually make their way into QL.

Anyway, I wanted to thank maverick for hosting this great event once again. Getting all the sponsors and keeping things together for only our thanks in return. You're the man.

In the first contest I was a judge, this time I wanted to make a mapping debut, sadly enough I dropped out due to lack of time. I didn't check the gameplay of the maps (which is very important) by if I had to judge the maps by the looks and layout, my fav would be 'Corrosion' by phantazm, right after him I'd put hipshot with his awesome 'Solitude' and for the third place.. I have no idea! This time the contest entries are even better than last time. I'm actually quite happy I'm not a judge :)

For those lazy guys that don't want to download the map pack, maybe this will change your mind:

Noctis claimed some of the sub money will go towards paying map makers, so hopefully these maps will get put in a lot more often and quicker.

I'm kinda glad maps have to go through id first. Quality is definitely better than quantity.

you must have been out of the loop for years if you think this looks good. There are loads of modded idtech engines that look far better than q3 engine...

well in terms of engine features it obv sucks by now, but just looking at the screens i would prefere these maps over any ut3 map. i just like the style i guess

Thank you. Oddly enough, none of the competitors are going to QuakeCon, but everyone is still very excited about being showcased there. I'm hoping the community can come through and post pictures/videos of the maps getting some play time.

That would be awesome; any booth pictures/videos would be sweet.

Unfortunately I won't be there either, so that isn't much help. I'd recommend either downloading the map pack and checking out the individual readme files, or checking out the competition forums. Each mapper has their own thread there so if the objective isn't clear you can ask them directly.

Some very impressive maps here. With one obvious exception, all the maps look very pretty and quite playable, and there are some really standout maps that go further than that.

For me, the stand out ones are (in no specific order), ct3dm5, phantq3dm3, kazdm5, solitude and possibly storm3tourney5. Some have the visual edge, while others look like they'd have more interesting gameplay.
