I also used the search button. Seems you sir are full of shit. Seems most of the levelup people I cant imagine ishju going "LOL WHO IS THIS FOX" or any of their commentators whining about ex-girlfriends leaving them.

Basically, you don't know what you commentate about in Quake, you speak with the sort of dialect that shames this country and are obviously proud of both of those facts.

As for the "lol 1100 people clicked on my stream" argument, it counts the people who clicked on "WATCH STREAM". It includes the people who just clicked watch and didnt stay for more than 5 seconds.

PLUS Those 1100 people could have easliy been the same 300-500 people choosing to pause. And out of those 300-500, how many just checked to see other games or just watched randomly then quit?

then there are also people who watched and thought this shit was annoying but neither know nor care about esr to complain?

He means the average number of viewers that actually stay on the stream. Unique visitors represents indeed anyone who has clicked/started the stream (including those who never watched more than, let's say, 2-3 mins). We also had ~14.000 unique viewers during ESWC but you could never see more than 2000-3000 on the streams.

He's talking about the number next to 'LIVE' on the own3d player throughout the cup, as you realized.

it's easy: a small amount of people keeps whining on esr on every thread that should involve streaming. and it's kinda always the same whine. so if you think you can do it better, you are very welcome to join on ts and proof this.

to use sjobs words "we aren't perfect" but we always try to improve. the way we improve might not be the whiner's first approach. so instead of going for non-commentator on stream or "get people that know what they are talkin about" we might choose a different path.

so in the end it all comes down to one point: the fun. We could go for a non-distracted 10 minutes talk about what happens ingame. to be honest, if it's some interesting game that might be a good approach (if you didnt see it yet, if a game is good, we stick to the game for the fulltime). but if it turns out to be one-sided, boring or rape we turn to more funnier things like discussing the tournament itself, insulting ourselves (especially forecast and me) or talk nonsense. If you still dont like the fun part in this and want some dry stream, well click mute pls.

p.s.
I think its still funny to see the exgf thing pop up :) so it worked.

I don't know if it's you but there's at least one (German?) guy who is now saying "yeah" all the time just like forecast. It's obvious he picked it up by commentating with forecast so it shouldn't be hard to drop the habit. It's VERY annoying.

try not searching for it. it's a common pattern you are searching for and if you find it you realize how often it is used. if you dont believe that, just try to focus on a person inhaling/exhaling while talking. you will easily realize that you get annoyed by the sound because you are expecting it.

I'm not "searching for it". At first I wasn't even expecting that guy to use the same "yeah?" as forecast. When I'm listening to the commentary I simply hear it like I hear all the other words and that particular way of talking is annoying, especially given that it's not "natural" and he (you?) picked it up from forecast...

I feel guilty when I complain about the holysh1t stream because it's a good stream and I appreciate all you guys do for these events.

But truthfully... the commentary is just dire. When it's not random gibberish it's an attempt at stating the obvious about what's happening which is a bit pointless since people are watching it and I've always gone by the idea that if you're going to commentate on what's happening (that is, saying what's happening) it should be good enough to be standalone (ala radio) but everytime I've left the stream on in the background and joined a game just so I can listen to the commentary to see what's going on, it's so patchy and random. It's as if they commentated the first couple spawns then gave up and stayed silent until the odd "oooo" moment

Again, it's great you guys are doing it, but here's a few pointers:

- Ingame sounds need to be like x100 louder. You can barely hear it at all and it means if you want to hear hitbeeps/keel sounds or whatever you have to turn it up to a really high level at which point you come on and go "YEAH?!" so loud it makes you shit yourself

- If you're gonna commentate ala "Rick James I can't see shit" way, don't do it really quietly and patchy. It just feels like I'm having a panic attack and hearing voices

- If you're gonna do offtopic talk or whatever, do it INBETWEEN games (hell, there's plenty of time) since often enough they'll be the most epic clutch game goin on and the commentators will be talking about what cereal they like to eat at breakfast or what colour their shit was that morning

Keep it up though anyway. It's still a great stream, but it could easily be a lot better ;]

Loving how up their own arse this community actually is, its a fucking game and the zotac/gdata are just cups for fun... the same guy wins every week and he wins 3-0 maybe 3-1, one in 5 games is exciting the rest are by the book whitewashes.

Bring in the pro commentators for the pro competitions, qcon dreamhack iem etc, makes it feel that extra bit more important, as for shoutcasters we dont need some guy spoon feeding us what we can see for ourselves.. bit of shit talk keeps viewers on through the boring games.

With holysh1t or lvl, life is good. I just don't see how you can complain about someone offering to help bring a community together, by streaming something we all (who are watching) love. My written English sucks compared to my German one, so things geht a little bit confused. I know that they don't improve, talk about retarded things and unterstand less than me concerning dueling and that means quite a lot :D. But I'm glad that I can watch the cups even if I have to mute the bull$hit talk sometimes. Most of the time it's ok. If there were a alternative chances are big that I would watch the other stream. There are quite a few people with potential like Calipt.
Actually I misread your statement and should apologize. I blame it on the coffee which was still in the machine and thus my brain wasn't working properly.

ps: People have to understand that they waste a lot of their freetime for streaming. Getting insulted for that isn't appropriate :/

Holysh1t.tv and lvl^ both do their casting for free or minor ad based revenue. No one pays these guys to spend their whole Sunday afternoon streaming you all the best of Zotac at 2pm CEST on http://tv.holysh1t.net ! Sure you may not like the stream in any way shape or form, but they're not FORCING you to watch it. In the end they're providing YOU with a service with out asking anything from you in return. In short, they're actually *DOING* something for the community with out taking from it.

Unlike p4r4 (and the likes), who actively attempt to destroy the community through spouting bullshit. Either shut your trap or do better your self because your spiteful words achieve nothing.

Say what you will, but all these streamers do a blood good job of bringing the games to the community.

The "do better yourself or shut up" phrase is generally used by those who are unable to accept criticism. You don't have to be a good commentator in order to comment on other's casting. Actually being able to cast and being able to objectively point out flaws in another's discourse are two different things altogether.

I think most of the people do appreciate the effort they put in and since it is their stream they of course have every right to commentate on it. But I think a lot of viewers do feel the commentating and attitute from the crew is far to casual at times..

Like when commentators who admit to being to busy with getting the stream to work to actually watch the matches, but are still talking on stream. Which can be a good time passer for unexciting matches early on, but in other more serious and tactical ones it can be down right annoying and incredibly distracting from the action. Especially when they have turned the stream into some sort of laughfest, where they are just giggling constantly and making jokes, whilst completely ignoring the match.

Like I said they have every right to do what ever they want with their own stream, but I think a lot of people would appreciate it if they could treat some match ups with more respect and keep their comments on a more professional level.

I appreciate the insane amount of time HS give up to cover everything. Even game types they dislike such as TDM. Obviously lvl^ is much more limited in its coverage by real world commitments so without HS.TV you would not be able to watch all these events.

Before you criticise their casting or lvl^'s it is better to have in mind some specific areas you think they could improve in not just call them generally shit. I am sure if it is a reasonable suggestion they will listen, but just muting themselves is not a solution.

I don't get the haters arguments. Bart and Forecast are decent casters. Granted, their depth of knowledge ain't great, and they tend to banter on about unrelated stuff, but so does the lvl^ team. So did Tasteless+SDM, so did 2gd+Joe, so do Slasher+Wheat, so does Greased+Jehar. The fuck is wrong with it? Actually, if you see two casters never having miscellaneous chats between them, it's a sign that they don't know/like each other very much, and listening to them just feels fucking awkward (f.e 2gd&co at last Dreamhack, Thorin and Joe at IEM finals).

The only annoying guy is Insta with his 'yeah' emulation which combined with monotone voice and accent are ugh. Sorry man. :-E

in my humble opinion it's pretty boring (aka not-entertaining) if you don't go for other things if the game starts to be not entertaining itself. anybody can see this, just watch a football game between Germany and San Marino. It's rape, it's boring and it gets hard to listen to a commentator trying to push more than the obvious.

so once a game starts to become boring we could go for non-talking, making viewers get bored overall because then there wouldnt even be forecast and me ranting about each other (U PRICK STILL OWE ME BTW!). so the chance of viewers stop watching without comments for those boring games is higher than a minority getting annoyed by the shitloads :)

regarding insta: pls don't forget that he's pretty new to shoutcasting, so still sort of a trainee. everybody starts like that and get's better in the meanwhile. a new one starts with throwing in sidenotes unless we can't accompany for whatever reason (which is not happening that often). the thing about his monotone voice, well, he's working on it already, and if you have a look at the vods over the last weeks, you can hear that.

Fair enough but... only people with really deep knowledge in QL casting are 2gd when talking about duels and nvc+dis when talking about tdm. Otherwise it's full-on amateur hour with nuggets of wisdom here and there.

About passion, i don't understand that. They (forecast and bart) get as excited about great plays and silly situations as the other noteworthy casters. Should they orgasm every two seconds or something?

if HS provided a non-commentary stream aswell as the commentated one then everyone would be happy, i usually dont like any of the casters on any stream besides 2gd, most are just saying whats on the screen or something that ends up just annoying me, like constantly being wrong about whats happening in the game. best online caster duo is nvc and disrepute, especially when dis starts picking on nvc :D

I would love for some more inexperienced commentators to step up their commentating like 2gd did. While less experienced commentators only react to the game (nice shot, wow!, he is getting RA, he does this and that blablu) 2gd is getting into the head of the players, anticipating their moves, explaining tactics, analyzing the situations (items/weapons available, ammo, timing, weapon choice, positioning and so on), all that stuff a good commentator is supposed to do. He is adding greatly to the experience while unexperienced commentators mostly just narrate what's already been seen on screen. Also the accents...

nvc seemed pretty good at it though.

This is how we do it, HQ most of the time and HQ + LQ for the big events. There is no point for us running a LQ stream when HS is also providing a stream at lower settings that seems to work for almost everybody. Not to mention the fact that all our streamers are away on holidays so there would have been nobody to provide a LQ one anyway...

I am sorry it does not work for everybody, but in the future own3d will implement a nice little feature that will allow us to provide HQ and LQ at the same time.

Rapha is a sick caster. He knows even more than 2gd and is just as fluent in speech.

He only needs a bit more humor and can replace 2gd anytime 2gd wants to leave.

Rapha can cast while beating people in game.

Dunno about his plans. But I saw couple of his matches. He seemed rather rusty and his RG was not as it used to be. But occasionally you could see the old Toxinator. (Especially on his match vs agent on dm13, where he had some incredible Shaft moments).

Dunno if he can keep up with the elite already. But I'm glad he's playing again. Would be so rad to see him attending QCon this year. But I doubt that. :(

Toxjq Had like %60 of his aim back.
%10 Of his normal map awareness.
And %25 of his timing.

And still gave us some really great games.

Toxjq in shape will definitely be able to give rapha a run for his money.

However I don't think Rapha will lose.

And.. it seems cooller has been getting aim tips from strenx? He is hitting fucking everything which is really interesting.

With anticipation, I actually meant in-game prediction. This is kinda hard imo, because so many can happen at once, and the players do react by instinct or think that fast and switch to some other gamestyle, so that someone as spectator can´t really predict exactly their next steps.... And if it´s predicted correctly, the next action sequence is up already and commentators are most of the time behind...

For me, it's always a bad idea also in everyday conversations, because I myself am no natural entertainer. Some people can fill gaps seamlessly by just rambling on and still say something worthwhile, which I can't.

Anyway, I at least didn't notice that you were trying to avoid silence, so you must have done ok. It still wasn't your obligation though, you were the "expert guest", so to speak, and totally free to talk just when you feel like it.

And I believe some of the best football/tennis/etc commentators do just the same, talk when they feel like it.

Whatever you consider worth mentioning is Ok I guess, as long as it's genuine and you're feeling comfortable with it. It can be general remarks about players gamestyle, even jokes about them or other stuff. It's just that those "well it's been silent for a minute so I've got to say at least SOMETHING" can turn out to be embarrassing for oneself and others.

I can tell you one moment where you "won me over", which I believe was toxjc vs agent on dm13, the turning point of the game. I myself wasn't paying too much attention, but you came up minutes after the fact with the observation that it's been the dropdown. That's the kind of stuff I like, oversight and providing meaningful context, which I might have missed, where you are bringing me back into the game in a meaningful way.

That's certainly a good idea, specifically when there's spare time in between games.

Otherwise, it seems to be the general rule of good quake casting to not talk about what's happening, because everybody can see that for themselves, but why. And to talk about the why's it needs knowledge of the game (and it's players), which you have. And where content is ample, I'd say there's little to worry about the form anyway.

No, it means that we can know who's better only after they play each other in full shape.
"Out-of-shape" can be different. For example, maybe av3k played at 10% of his shape and toxjq at 90% or maybe it's the other way round. The "in-shape" results would be vastly different in those cases.

He wasnt maybe TEH MAN duel in that time, but he certainly was pro. And TDM he was TEH MAN, just machine, best player in world.

in q4 he developed much, timing etc, and that time none could beat him in q3 either.

And now, hes aim is still best in world. He is little bit rusty with his timing thought(well very rusty ;D), but i think that will be OK when he does practise little bit. Moving etc still little rusty but even now allready its better than most.

Rapha vs tox finals coming (if tox is in shape!) and tox will win because he outaims rapha too much and rapha playes game that is based on knowing wher enemy is, tox is so unpredictable!

Before Qcon tox beat cooller online, and cooller went on to say tox is fat and cu at lan, which is what the other poster was referring to. Tox came to esreality and said that he was going to kick coollers ass. Cooller then proceeded to destroy tox in qcon, using mainly shaft on dm6. Toxic was playing duel full time at this point, and was participating in every possible tournament. It was the best Toxic we saw in real Q3.

Interesting. and I thought I saw a certain team called "iCE cLIMBERS" compete at that quakecon.
And also the same team had just placed second in the TDM Eurocup.
I am kind of wondering what "full time" means to you...

It was the best Toxic we saw in real Q3.

Ok let's look at it.
Quakecon 2004: Toxic loses dm6 to cooller.
A year later at ESWC 2005: Toxic beats cooller on dm6 and hub, loses only ztn. (also finishes 5th/6th in, arguably, the strongest competiton of all Q3 tournaments)

And yet you claim he was the best at Quakecon 2004...

This leads to to one question: Can I expect an objective statement from you anytime soon?

Are you googling this stuff up just for the sake of arguing? You obviously were not around back then if you think people were still practising TDM at that point or that in 2005 players had better forms than in 2002-2004.

afaik it's from a #tours.ge online tournament leading upto qlan2 in 2002 or 2003, where toxic beat cooller in a bo3 with dm6 as decider.

At qlan2 toxic went on to face cooller in the quarter finals, again winning over cooller sending him down into the losers brackets after a tense dm6, and us spectators watching the bigscreen went nuts :D.
After that he said something like "this is my lg on lan" with some funny spelling mistake I can't remember.
Cooller came back from the losers bracket and beat toxic after that in another close game later that night.

In 2002/2003 quake period, toxic and cooller was always in verbal fights and lucky brackets always made them face eachother around the quarter/semis at the time.
That year they probably had the most noteable rivalry going i've ever seen between two players, and I think it was also a great part to what gave toxic motivation to get better at duel, since he was still converting from tdm to duel.

Which expression are you talking about exactly? "your lg is nothink on lan" is from 2004 qcon. I guess you are explaining "cu at lan"? I think the online tournament you are looking for was Cyberfight invitational.

tdm wise stelam was even, and prozac also fights for the throne ,i think he won many motm over tox in cb matches.

well he was a dm6 beast in duel but dont glorify him too much.
