In tournament someone will always win. If it's not any of the current pros - well, that means they're not the best anymore.

I don't want players that like ONLY tactical game to be able to finish in top places, I want also see super-fast movement, quick decisions, great shots, etc. And I want maps that favor those kind of players that can do everything, not just slow strategists that use only one side of the game. I want QL to be complex game that includes many more things beside just tactics and control.

The point you are making may be valid, but it implies lowering the level of play. Ofc you can make a tournament with random maps, and of course somebody will win it, but the question is whether the games you will get will be interesting or not.

Think of battleforged when it was first released. That map was spoiled because of sound, and a big percentage of matches played there ended up being low score, unexciting matches.

Unfortunately, the only people with enough deep knowledge to judge if a map is interesting at top level are top players. You and I can agree on a map, but that does not make it interesting for tournaments, and It's just too naive to think that anything new is better.

So while I agree with you and everybody else that changing map pools is a good thing, if you want to keep a certain quality you need good maps.

I agree with this, but top players are all different and each has their own understanding of the game. If you let people like guard choose what maps are good and what are not, we'd have 5 arenas of strategic boredom in map pool. Or if we let cooller choose the map pool, he'd never even think of removing dm6 or t9 out of it while many other pros think these maps are complete shit.
I never meant that maps should be added to map pools without testing, just because they're new. Of course all maps should be evaluated by pros before considering to add them permanently to map pool. But every map facilitates a certain style of play. For example, you'll rarely see an 1:0 game on Aerowalk, because it favours fast play style with a lot of action and consequently a lot of frags, it offers very little possibilities to hide away. On the other hand, there are maps like The Lost World that provide many opportunities to disappear from opponent's POV for 2 minutes and gather 200 armor even if you're out of control, and with 200 armor you have time to escape almost any battle if you see you're losing in and hide again, and then repeat the process again and again and again, so the games tend to be slow, tedious, anti-climatic, even if the players still find them interesting in the strategic meta-game. And players, including pros, generally tend to say that maps that favour their style are good and other maps are bad, even if they offer many ways to play interesting games for players of other styles, and that's why we have lots of disagreements on the choice of maps between pros.
Now while only players who understand a lot in the game can judge how interesting a map is, almost anyone can give an opinion of the style of playing. Even complete noob watching a game can tell that this player played fast and did a lot of tricky shots in battles and that player tended to hide a lot and escape from fights, etc. And while some people think that we should have a map pool that has a balance of different styles, my opinion is that we only should let those maps in that give fast games with lots of action and don't allow hiding or slowing the game down, and provide lots of ways of tricking the opponent (via teleporters, for example), etc. Basically, I think, Quake has somewhat a future in e-sports only if it becomes a good game for spectators, because it can't easily attract new players with its learning curve where you have to mostly lose and RAGE for a long time before you begin to actually have real good fun and interesting games. And to be likeable to spectate, it has to produce spectacular games, and it's easier when maps actually help it and not obstruct.

I think what differs between competition and fun is just the color of the lenses of the glass you choose to wear. In the end, we want a competitive environment where what we consider fun overlaps with what makes a player win.

The difficulty is that agreeing on fun is difficult, while competitive aspects are directly measurable with tournaments. Now, pretend you have to design a mechanism to pick maps. The only sure thing is that the pros are the only ones that deeply understand what makes you win at this game. On the contrary, there is no authority for spectators that will tell you what is fun, and maybe the only measure is to look at the fan bases.

So a safe way is to ask the pros opinions about the maps, and hope that the biases due to individual styles are averaged off by asking a good number of pros. This looks reasonable to me.

It's one point of view, but as I just said, I don't think the biases should average off, because it would lead to "average" game with a little bit of this and that, but with no particular "flavour", while in my point of view it should have some very specific qualities like lots of action, rapid movement and positioning around the map, lots of possibilities for tight rail shots, air rockets, etc. So I think that some styles (with corresponding players) should be completely eliminated from competitive QL, and some other styles should be emphasized. That's why only pros that have a particular style need to be asked and opinion of the others should be disregarded.

There are pros with different styles. Of all the pro players, we can select only those who have a specific style and let them choose the maps.
I.e. we can listen to what cypher says and don't listen to what guard says, for example.

A better analogy (as has been used before) is golf. Great golfers don't spend months practicing every shot on every course so they can get that tee shot on the 9th bang on the fairway where they've pre-determined after playing the same shot 200 times - their skills are transferable, they adapt to the venue.

There's a skill to learning new maps, just as there's a skill to aim, movement, tactics etc.

There are many good CTF ~ TDM teams so first of all I wouldn't say FnaticMSI.QL could easily be on top of everything, never underestimate opponent. Second, it would be very biased to do something like that, PLAY has it's own staff and has nothing to do with any of FnaticMSI teams/players.

I have had lotsa MSI hardware in the past and even today for example my netbook is MSI, its right next to ASUS as prefered brand. They are the two vendors i have bought more stuff. Intuition? Maybe.

But today its even easier as its clear which companies support the game we love. Here and now if youre a natural born quaker you buy and recommend MSI and ASUS gear, and ofc you buy a Pro account (if you have a working server location nearby).

duel wise north america has a decent sized community. and theres quite a lot of really good players. theres no reason why some of them wouldnt finish top 16 (as they have in the past). so theres no reason not to hold an american qualifier.

Even if chance/dkt/etc are good players and can maybe finish in top16 possibly (if the tournament is 16 players), no one wants to see them in a tourney, because they're boring and dkt is also retarded. We already have enough boring people in Europe, there's no need to bring in some more.

I know they are separate but I meant not in the same week as fucking dreamhack. Major tournaments should be spread out. Having them close together means we get to watch no exciting duel tournaments for 4-5-6 months. This means the duel community will be inactive again and players might consider doing other things (like trying to get laid) instead of putting their best efforts in quake tournaments to entertain the quake nerds (me)

well this is really simple.. have a duel and a 2v2 tourney

u do realise that 2v2 is fucking boring to watch? no players outside quake will enjoy from it at all.

also trying to organise 2vs2/ctf tourney etc etc is more complicated, getting enuff teams into lan bla bla bla and what not, just wasted of time, really.

I'll try to shed some extra light on all of this. Beat IT was originally scheduled for Beijing but unfortunately iD Software couldn't provide LAN servers in time for the event. Given that MSI Beat IT still want the competition played because they still have the prize money for it, they probably thought well what better then at a big event like Dreamhack. It's pretty obvious it will save costs and also make the entire LAN event a much worthier attendance for players (two tournaments for the one event). Infact I kind of wished this news was out a few months ago so that an Australian representative would be attending. The reason there isn't another US tournament is probably because Fnatic were the European qualifications where as EG were the US qualifications for the Beat IT competition. Given that Dreamhack is in Europe and players without major sponsors would have put money into the IEM US Finals it will be hard for them to finance again so quickly to another event, therefor making it much easier for European players to attend the event.

In regards to TDM, CTF vs Duel. I started as a duel player in Quake and later moved into Team competitions when the last update came about. There is nothing wrong with having two Duel competitions on the same weekend because as everybody knows anything can happen, and that's why we watch. CTF and TDM make it hard for teams to finance players to go over which is why you saw only EG, Fnatic and a few American teams attend Quakecon and not teams like LLL, and who ever else there is at the moment. Sending one player $$ > $$ Sending four players. Also not everything for Dreamhack has been released yet, undoubtly they will run Duel again but I suppose if some clever individuals speak to the DH management anything can happen.

thats why a 2v2 tourney would be cool... all the duelers would couple up, and it wouldnt be to expensive for the tdm teams to just send 2 people instead of 4. for the spectators this would be one of the badest tourney in years, since we have only duel tourneys for some time now.

thank you for good words, but as I wrote some treath before. Im with demon draven bodzo and others above skilled random players, but under TOP , like cypher cooller dahang and so on.
I won dahang lot of games, but it doesn't mean much.
I win game vs top if i`m lucky, I have good day and enemy have bad day, it's happens 2 of 10 times max. So in lan tourney , chance I can beat top10 player is like 15%, it's possible ( i proved) but realistic.. to hard.. lack of talent :)

vo0 was nowhere to be seen during the american MSI tournament he only returned after it was over for a long time, furthermore nobody actually said that tournament was a qualifier for the larger tournament.

most importantly a few american's suggested holding a 1 or 2 slot quakelive qualifier in america but they never did.

It still doesnt make sense to send out randomly an invite like that out of nowhere, when there are still greater players trying to qualify online such as cooller, stermy, fox....

If they invited ZeRo4 i wouldn't complain so much :)

but at the same time cooller, stermy, fox had the opportunity to compete in 2 qualifiers already and they have another chance to qualify. Some of the responsibility falls on them if they don't qualify they had the opportunity to play in 2 tournaments already where they only had to reach the semi's cooller showed up for one stermy and fox showed up for neither. they have one more chance.

fnatic tourney isn't it xD - they have to hand out more invites or else it's gonna look really biased :o)

Really what kind of bs is that out of. the 3 dates I wanted to enter the tourney gets moved 2ce to a diff date... and once the tourney was actually called 3 while it was the 2nd and I signed up for the wrong one cuz the site sucked and the post on esr was confusing (and I woke up 10 mins before the tourney should've started ;p)

If ppl have IEM on wednesday they SHOULD'VE QUALIFIED BEFORE, or ask to play their IEM game on a diff date. You do NOT change the date of tournaments.
Take me for example, I missed out on the IEM because the (dutch) qualifier of EPSwas moved because of the same fucked up reason, and then I couldn't play in it (so I actually had to play in the div1 cuz someone changed a date like wtf) . And now the IEM actually 'forces' you to change the dates of this?

This kind of reasons for changing dates almost feels like:
"Ye ye ok you did actually qualify but hey we have this other guy who is more famous than you are so we'll just give him the ticket, fuck it that you beat him." (not a quote btw ;p)

serious question though, it's annoying seeing people qualify for these events and not go, which is why i dont agree with online qualifiers.

you'd rather see the same 10 players invited over and over? it's boring, elitist and discourages new blood. also these qualifiers bring activeness in an otherwise stale community.

i'd rather we see an open lan event, rather than people winning or beating other people and not going - causing a massive fuck up in who then replaces them or advances further due to how brackets work

i.e. what if he beats cooller in round 1? cooller wont go but some other guy from the other side of the bracket who got to the finals might.

yeah, I don't like the evolution from the massive open events we had in the first years of Q3 to these mini-tournament cycle. it's particularly weak when the "world's biggest lan" appears to be manning their QL tournament by handing out discretionary invites rather than an open.

edit: not taking anything away from guys like blaze though, they also have online qualifiers which are the next best thing, and I suppose adding direct invites to established players isn't a bad thing.

You must have missed something. They posted here on ESR about it, it was cancelled because the great people at id software were so kind to not be able to provide QL LAN servers at the venue.

I can think of 3 good reasons why not too:

1 - He's not good enough to be there. Here are 3 players that would destroy him:

where were their special VIP invites?

2 - He failed to qualify from the beginning.
3 - He plays cpm.

Maybe they wanted to do qualifier in america, but it turned out that only vo0 can go to europe so they didn't bother with organizing a tourney because its results wouldn't matter anyway?
