Sure, each league/cup/ladder can vary in maps a bit, but what happens when some leagues are played with ramp jumps, instant weapon changes or just random devpicks that don't belong in a competitive match.

Don't belong as in, it would be nice if there was a set rule, either have ramp jump or don't have them at all (for example). What are people supposed to train now, random devpicks?

While this might turn out to be a good addition (advanced server settings), I have my doubts about it.

Last but not least. all leagues should have the same server settings. Let's wait for it and see how it turns out.

after messing around with quakelive ramp jumps they are mostly for helping with the double jumps especially on boxes like on the map solid. the ramps some maps do have seem to make me jump higher but not faster.

the double jumps have improved though and after seeing if it was possible to triple jump up the boxes by the yellow armor on solid I actually ended up quad jumping the top ledge and hitting my head on the ceiling.. i like it :)

damage trough floors is really great tbh, the game was so different back in pr 1.17 :) loved it.
Not saying it should be used in gamemodes with items, but its perfect for clanarena/raQL when it comes!

ramp jumps are ramp jumps, chain jumps are some form of double jumps
so they are an addition, but with ramp jumps enabled, chain jumps become more powerful as well.

Yeah, some jumps are a bit over the top with ramp jumps enabled if you ask me. I don't think even with cpm movement in q3 one can go from floor to the top (RA) level with a triple jump on cpm4(a). For tricking I think ramp jumps enabled is fun, but I can't imagine seeing Dreamhack or any other major tourney (well, except for quakecon, nothing would surprise me at this point if they tried something screwy) being played with it enabled.

Still, no ability to alter starting hp/ar or fall damage or armor damage. And still no way to play the small RA maps "properly".

You forgot the "FU ID, you are all imcompetent" groups, they divide into:

"PRO SERVERS ARE WORTHLESS"

"FLOORDAMAGE WAS SO AWESOME I WANT IT BACK"

And time is running now, if they wont do any serious development on QuakeLive (i mean some freaking nice options, so avarage joe thinks "OMG THIS IS AWESOME!!!") quakelive is gonna die and there will be 10 teams for every major TDM league (look at drops at clanbase, esl!)

Most people play on standard pub severs anyway, and they will continue to do so. Small fraction of pro player will use these settings to occasionally play some games with weird settings for fun. No major tourney will use any settings different from standard.

One stance is that it's not id's role to set the rules, but rather to allow us to do so. I would not blame them for adding these features. What is important is communication and common sense when it comes to leagues and tournaments. I would not mind a cpm CA and a vq3 duel, all under the same hood.

The community has proven that it is unwilling to adopt change that does not have an "id was here" sticker on it. CPMA and CPM turned away OSP purists, but they're happy to play QL even though it's more alien than CPMA/VQ3 or CPMA/CQ3 were.

I think you are wrong. There is a big difference between different mods and different rules in a single mod/game.

The first case is a killer because CPMA/OSP/RA differs way more than in few rules/abilities. They have different netcodes, different vars, different feeling, up to the point that switching to a different mod is very painful (I don't want to relearn how to shoot just to enjoy some ramp jumps), a no one is willing to do so. I think part of the hate between CPMA/OSP fans has its roots here.

But when you keep a unique mod/game, then the changes of rules are usually a seamless transition. Think of how different CTF is from 1on1, and still you see players that excels in both, or at least enjoy to play them. I think adding a few jump abilities is not a big leap from this. You get used that you can do certain things here and not there, knowing that most of the game experience is still the same.

The only real difference between OSP and CPMA/VQ3 was the netcode, and it was marginal. CQ3 was what QL should have been, and it was still rejected. QL movement/netcode/sound/balance is all different, and OSP purist whiners are nowhere to be found.

I remember that switching between mods was horrible. As well, ql is different, but it is what people are now used to. My guess is that jump changes plus some rules may be much less of a problem than what we saw in the past. Anyways, time will tell.

I think we've had a steady flow of content for a while now (keep in mind that another content update is scheduled for Monday), I'd go with more payment options and fixing bugs prior to releasing more content.

Even if we had 1000 maps, there are still people out there that can't go pro for various reasons, I'd rather see more people subscribe and add content later on.

Current content is not perfect, but it is updated often enough so that we'll get good mappool for all modes eventually. What I personally want right now is more server locations. Ukraine, Finland, Scandinavian countries (for better ping between Russia and western Europe), maybe another server in Russia. What's bothering me is that I know of several attempts where people provided EVERYTHING at their own expense for id software to bring up a new server, but it all resulted in about zero response from id.

maybe "content" is not the best word to describe it because that falls short. The thing is the game doesn't feel complete at all and there's 2 reasons for that:
a) lack of content, especially in comparison with modern shooters which have a ton of content (halo reach, cod7, etc). It's not only about maps but the game doesn't even have a proper training mode. Gtv falls in the same category, as the lack of embed videos along with many other things.
b) payment options, more servers (that's a must. Idk how russia still has server problems and brazil and the uae region just don't have servers), etc.


on the other hand, as I said in another post here, this update is going to the right direction: to make quake live "the" quake game. Hopefully id keeps going in that direction by adding things from other quake games, movement and content-wise.

id is trying to take everyone from CPMA Promode communities and probably the rest of near dead mods and gather them up at quakelive.

Which would be good, since if you get sick of regular ca then you can join the CPM-ish ca that will be hosted by some guy who paid $50 to rent the server.

After you get your face raped, then you can go back to your standard ca and everything will be fine again.

More options when they are on the same website with the same community is not that bad. Sure some people will be diveded, but this is supposed to get more players into quakelive.

The quake1 guys that want to fly around maps like in qw. The quake 2 guys that want to play kind of like q2 physics so they will come and play around on provinggrounds with the fucking chaingun, etc etc.

I think they are trying to unite ALL quakers, under quakelive. Imagine if you could have q2 players playing a competition with q2 settings in quakelive and the same with all quake communities.. would be interesting right ?

ramp jump is a huge change in terms of physics (or should be, i didnt try it yet) Chain jumping hardly does anything to regular vq3.

they add to the rules that, if the settings were non-standard the team that set the server can be awarded a default loss.

Well, some settings like through-wall damage, are not immediately noticeable. Also, it doesn't have to be deliberate attempt to get an advantage, someone could just forget to restore a value to standard or even forget what value is standard (probably not now, but id promised to enable a lot more configurable parameters).
Let's say you're a tourney admin and in the middle of a running tourney one of the players messages you that his opponent set up server with through-wall damage and won by 1 frag because of through-floor kill at last second. Your actions?

first action:
Tell everyone involved that this is a game, where people are supposed to have fun, not bitch about minor details and make up scenarios. ;)
And if they really take it so seriously, they should simply check with a teammate, won't take more than 10 seconds in warmup.

Second action:
Look at the demo, if the guys look like they are intentionally shooting at the floor, i.e. know the through floor damage is on, they get a loss, if not then I'll ask both teams to do a rematch (note: I wrote 'can be awarded a default loss', not 'will'). And after all it would have been an overtime if the frag had not happened.



And in the end, I maintain my point: You guys are just looking for things to complain about.

This is just the usual lack of usability a company typically brings when adding new features.

Phase 1: Bring more options, most of them useless.

Phase 2: Find out which are useless (for what mode) and which aren't. This should be easy as we're talking about Quake 3 here, plenty of experience and verifiable data during the years.

Phase 3: simplify. Let me help you, based on my q3 experience...

- Callvote during games never hurt anyone in Q3 so it will (hopefully) become standard in a while.
- The spawnserver form gets stripped down to the essentials and (as it was highly accepted in q3)...
- changes are made during (midgame even) callvotes, like gametype &ct.
- Another notable vote will be promode 1 (which will in 99% be used only in CA though)
- Callvotes enable the non spawning party in official matches to check if the (league) default values are ON.
- Eventually create presets that fit the modes, for example let CA always use pm1 by default, let (if the community likes it, just an example) CTF have rampjumps as default and let have duel and TDM have the old default values.

To me, this is really no big deal, it just appears so because it's still in phase 1.
