With the announcement a few days ago of Team Deathmatch replacing CTF at QuakeCon 2011, id has just given information on the map pools, and will presumably announce the prize money shortly.

The Quakecon tournament map pools:

Duel: Aerowalk, Furious Heights, Hektik, Lost World, Toxicity
TDM: Deep Inside, Dreadful Place, Grim Dungeons, Hidden Fortress, Purgatory, Realm of Steel Rats, Tornado

We would have seen a different map pool if more practice time was allotted, but with the tournament drawing near it was safer to stick to the DH map list.

The exception here of course is the swap from Intervention to Tornado in TDM, due to Intervention only being played once out of 57 games played in the DH TDM tournament.

Seems like Quakecon is based around European players now since TDM is DEAD in the Americas.

Lack of updates, no one playing premium, same garbage maps getting boring.

If Quake Live had all of the threewave maps it would be a blast, when will ID learn to listen to the community? When will they learn about molding a game from a success like Q3 that had CPMA, many great maps and lots of competition?

They need to think up something here, or fire the monkeys.

As said before, the duel map pool is really off balance. Too many high paced maps with 1 balanced pace map (t7) and 1 slow paced map (dm13)

I can understand where the ztn ragers come from, but i dont believe its a good idea to reintroduce ztn.... again.

Aerowalk, Furious Heights, Toxicity, Replacement slow paced map instead of Lost World, replacement average paced map for Hektik, IMO.

and i have no fckn clue about TDM, ill leave that to the few people that do play that gametype (never heard of tornado before, isit new? ;p )

Lost world is the only slow paced map without rail so it has to stay. T9 should be reintroduced to replace hektik. Not really any other maps that would be a decent replacement really if you want to take out ztn.

haha, I am so happy I don't play ql atm, duel mapplist so cpm`ish. so add aicontrol and instant weapon switch in next update!
Give skilled cs`er time to learn few maps and they will place top4 in qcon, point/click maps ftw!

Last Dreamhack, was 1st tourney in 10 years, who I was bored/lazy to watch, becose of that dumb mappool. I guess I am not only one.

dm13 rocks, stop the hate. Its actually a ton better than ztn if you ask me.

Hektik isnt that bad either, I think it's pretty good and I certainly can't see how aerowalk can be rated much better when you know how IMBA aerowalk is between the guy in control and the guy out of control... For the sake of a FEW nice games provided by the top players on aerowalk (cypher vs cooller omgomg) I'd keep it in.

Toxicity hasn't offered any good game in my opinion and hasn't been pickedup by the player anyway...

Keep aero and hektik for the fast paced map
Keep dm13 for a slow paced map
Then you'd need two maps that come in between these. I would say ztn and t7 are fitting examples. (T7 is a MUST imo)

Don't think anyone will regret intervention and it's about time we get to give a chance to tornado imo...

pity that the tdm map pool has 7 maps instead of 5. u shouldve taken it one more step after including tornado for intervention and gone ahead and dropped hidden fortress and steel rats both of which are utter shit in ql and made it a pick pick system so tornado actually has a good chance of getting played.

Intervention's balance in quake live is pure shit. It doesn't work well at all anymore, but this is hardly surprising when you understand it was designed for q3, the changes in ql, particularly to rail, make this map poor compared to how it was in q3. Also, outside of a few magic moments from mikes playing for forze versus ic, I would defy people to recall any memorable games from q3 on this map.

Why don't you also tell us why Hidden Fortress is so bad, people love to claim this but when you hear their reasons it's always something beyond retarded like "it haz no tacticz and templay no mattah rofl".

Why? You dont think the team that holds LG room have a default win? And thats basically the only strategy you can have on it. But if you like one strategy maps sure. It could be better though.

1) Remove shards from LG room, put them on the bridge/tele exit/above 50h.

2) Remove the water and put solid floor from RL to MH

OR

3) Put the MH i the middle of MH room and make the room bigger.

4) Remove LG ammo. Add RL ammo there.

But i have heard that you love HF and dislike purg so... yeah.

No you don't have a default win, for a fucking obvious reason as well. Unless you completely outclass your opponent the LG/YA room is a contested position that will change hands throughout the game. While it might be the favoured position for teams, a team who knows how to play the map can still cause a lot of problems with good positioning, using the rail and rocket, to make pushing out of LG/YA a difficult task. I'd also hazard a guess that you couldn't identify two of the major reasons LG/YA is so important, based on your map "suggestions", if they even qualify as such.

If you ever play TDM outside of pickups perhaps you'd gradually understand. I guess that's why you probably think Purgatory is so great though. So... yeah.

the 2 teleporters just ruin hiddenfortress for me. its too small with the teleporters. if u removed even one of the teleporters it would be a decent map. if u force people to go lower areas for major items like red or rail, u shouldnt leave them an easy out through teleporters. certainly not to totally risk free areas of the map. even if we switched the tele exits around, as in u take the rail tele and u come up to the exit in the same room, it would be ok cos that wouldnt be an easy escape to a room without enemies.

also the teles make quad sort of op.

edit: i havent heard ur argument against purgatory. not sure if ud consider tdm clan games in north america pickups by ur superior euro standards but ive played that map for the last 2 months on an almost nightly basis and it rocks.

3 out of 5 duel maps are arcade-style crap, WTF?

Lame arcade-style maps, just arcade fighting non-stop. Unbearable to spectate these games, spamming non-stop in a small map for 10 minutes and with some retardedly high final score (reminds me of high-scoring NBA or NASCAR, each point/overtake/frag doesn't matter much). dm13 is one of the best pro 1v1 maps ever, so that's good, but aerowalk can go lick my balls ("oh we're so against old maps so we drop ztn, yet we keep hub"???). Now adding two additional small fast-paced maps is too much.

Can we at least have some balance instead of all one-style mappool?

When I first played QL all people did was whine about '+back' maps, now maps are given that encourage +forward gameplay (not 4 overtimes, although dm13 is there) everyone whines again.. Toxic/ Aero games are extremely nice to watch, aero/hektik have given very good matches (crazy comebacks) .

The truth is no matter what maps the majority of players will whine, never satisfied - worse than grannies.

Quakecon is such a pointless event now. TDM was already ruined because they have to announce the details so late for some reason, and now duel, which was already going to be lacking some good players, will be filled with boring aim maps (1 of which is shit, the other is just shit in QL)

And that's not even taking into account the inevitable delays and fuck ups while the event is running.

Because I've been inactive for just less than a year? k1llsen is quite a clever player, he just makes mistakes. And fazz has a good railgun aim, plus he's an aggressive player, of course he's gonna like it.

I don't think fazz is great on ztn or dm13 at all.

I'd watch it but it's quite late and I'd like to stay up for a while yet. Hektik is the sleeping pill of QL.

i dont see why this is difficult. both players get to play maps they are strong on, and agree on a fifth and final map .

example

for the first four

cooller picks ztn, opponent picks hektik, cooller picks t4, opponent picks toxicity

for the fifth

cooller picks dm13/t7/dm6/house of decay, opponent chooses battleforged/t7/house of decay/dismemb

cooller is top seed so he chooses from the available maps they agree on, which are t7 or house of decay, t7 is selected , therefor your picks are ztn/hektik/t4/tox/t7

pretty fucking simple. bet this would turn out in more best of 5 matches as well. and if an upset happens, well done, clearly he was outplayed.

it also helps ppl who bother to be good on every map as opposed to just a select 5.

Duel tourneys should use more than 5 maps. I think 7 maps is best. (ztn and t4 along with the rest of this years quakecon maps)

As for picking first vs tossing first, I agree that picking first is better. Players should be able to play their best maps, and I would prefer to see people play their best maps as well. And as rapha has talked about before, players should not be able to choose not to practice a particular map without being punished for it. If you know the person you're playing doesn't have much experience on a particular map you should be able to exploit that.
