Hmm ok it's me again sorry I've been using the forum a lot recently.
Today, out of nowhere, I decided to talk to SyncError (ok lol) and sponge about the possibility to have QuakeLive available in multiple language. I know we are in 2012, I know english skills are developing everywhere, but trust me in France at least it will take ages before young people and random people understand english well. I always thought an english version only was preventing QuakeLive to seduce de casuals and the masses.
So, basically I asked sponge and he told me it wasn't going to happen because :
no plans to localize, no. the tech can't handle it without some serious rewriting of font rendering and all the places english strings are sent on the server
Then I said random stuff, that is was unfortunate blabla, and that I thought community would do translations for free and so on and he said :
after seeing what happened with minecraft's translations i dont think we have any desire to go near crowdsourced translations for a good long time heh
So, basically in this thread I'd like to discuss about two things :
- Do you think russian, german, spanish, french, chinese versions of QuakeLive would help the game grow ?
- Do you think some people could do a serious translation for free (I know I would personally) ?
