since quakecon and DH winter will probably not host tdm, you could use disrepute's idea and host a NATIONS TDM tournament instead.

As megaman3 said , Disrepute and Vor have been suggesting this is the way to go TDM wise for a lan tournament.
In my opinion there is a lot to win with such a format, such as :

- Competition : I think this is the most important thing. A Nations based tournament would give us a balanced and unpredictable tournament. Usually tdm LAN tournaments are a bit boring and dont have a lot of attendance because we all know clwin or "that one other team with noctis in it" will win it all, not even providing you with good games.
So whats the point?
With nations we could have almost all teams fighting for it, the key players spread around, so for once, people would actually have a reason to attend besides having fun.

- Marketing/Spectator's view : I think it would attract a lot more spectators who could actually identify with the players and game, cheering for their country. In the good spirit of Euro 2012.

- Sponsors : Since no one actually sponsors quakelive teams anymore (fnatic, metsu, etc..), playing for your country might help.

Ok, im just babbling but i truly think it would be an amazing tournament if it would be played as a Nations cup.

I think nations LAN cup would be an awesome idea.. if people would support it. It goes along with the idea of this last DH .. of promoting new players which was a success with DH.
Aswell.. it would give a fairly better chance for the teams to win something or atleast to be motivated to.. no colwn no pro mercs teams etc.. more balanced teams = more fun more competition = possibly more teams going because they don't know who's gonna be the top3.

And aswell .. it would be alot funnier i believe.. clash between nations it's always different.

I could come up with other Nations that would give them an interesting fight. Im not saying a Nations TDM tournament is realistic or will always work , i dont know if this one has the logistics or dimension to bring so many different people together, maybe Dreamhack Winter would be more suitable, but dont even compare the competitive side of a clan based tdm tournament with 4 teams and a LAN Nations TDM tournament.

It certainly is an awesome idea. If it fits well within the logistics of the event and somebody is willing to run it smoothly, then I'm up for adding it in.

I really like this idea but at the same time I would be very sorry IF there are any clans who would otherwise go, as there aren't many lans for teams with everyone choosing duel. I think there wouldn't be many though?

It's not that hard to configure server-side, and client-side it's easier than regular QL.

I can't really remember, but I went there 2007 or 2008 for the Crossfire Devotii Championships. I don't remember it as expensive in any way, prices was similar to swedish or even cheaper. Don't think we paid more than 12-15 euros per night in the hostels quite close to the event.

Its not that easy. As a local you need to sign @ coffeeshop, which isn't that easy. Shops are limited to 2000 customers (=fucking low!), and as a local you need some personal documents to be able to sign up. fucking lame right wing politicians. C!nts!

8 is very doable if you manage to get 120 hz and if you delay tdm and ctf a lot of players play both. a 8 player ctf tournament is doable within one day from 13:00 to 21:00 if you have a tight schedule

Working my ass off trying to track down 120Hz monitor sponsor. We really want BenQ since their screens are the best and they've already given a lot into esports, so we wanna help them grow more.

If I get 8 teams paid by a certain deadline (will decide on deadline and announce soon), then I'll CTF at the event as well. And yes, I will schedule it to avoid the TDM and duel as best as I can.

the benq`s at dreamhack were just perfect agree. well i can sponsor mine if there is a need but i think that might cause disagrees with the sponsors. from the eindhoven ctf lan i can say no 120hz is damaging the sign ups rather save money in other sectors

Well, I already suggested to some people about everybody from the communities chipping in to get some non-Euros over to this side of the pond (offer would extend to the Aussies and their side of the pond, too).

If it were to happen, it's not to say you'd get all your shit paid for you, but it'd be a cool community effort to help some people with flight or hotel costs.

Just an idea! I don't really want to put up any restrictions for people to come along. TDM nations is a fucking cool idea, but it eliminates a lot of people from playing TDM if we do Nations-only.

Duel wise about the number of players that people ask.. imo it depends alot on the prize money .. atleast concerning to progamers.

Problem with team TDM is that some players will cancel or not be able to come to the LAN and release this in oktober. With nationcup their is a bigger pool for reserve players then in a clan. But then a clan can always add people to their clan for the lan event...

This nations tdm idea surged as a way to get more teams going to events (2 in a row with very few sign ups) and avoid stomping (3 in a row). Maybe you are a bit too hopeful :P.
I forgot to add this to that post, but regular clans tdm had few stream viewers (people interested) in comparison to duel. Nations tdm should get more.

Also having both is ridiculously hard to organize. In the end it's better to host a 8 team nations tdm tournament, as I don't think there will be more than that though it's obviously expandable, and duel, as that organizes itself with few players (16. More than that is a burden).
edit: obviously exceptions are accepted but exceptionally, meaning that mixed nationally teams should be accepted but not that it ends up with all the teams being like that or with teams with people with 4 different nationalities. For example getting a NA team would be nice no matter if it's USA+Canada. And it's obvious there can be more than 1 one team per country.


and about ctf, there was another lan this year. They struggled getting teams as well but it worked.

Easy, you do a TDM nations. And a regular CTF tournament. That way everyone can play!

I don't think Nations TDM is such a good idea. It would be amazing if all nations sent their best teams but I doubt that would happen. If you are going to make it make sure you confirm with all the top nations that they actually want to go before making the official announcement.

a lot of nation teams if not every one might be forced to take a weaker player as sub since not every player can go there. also it would be unfair to lock out the non nation teams players. im sure there are lot of teams who are better than certain nation teams

I will keep this as simple as possible. Why should it be a nations based TDM ONLY?

Simple fact. The biggest viewing figure we ever had were for ESL ENC and ClanBase Nations Cup games. By the way this includes any duel cup.

If I do not normally watch a game (e.g. CS), but maybe tune in for a LAN event, I automatically support the teams I recognise. These might be fnatic, or SK or whoever. Quake has no major teams that anybody outside the regular Quake audience would know, so there is no automatic affiliation with any team. The Nations based teams solve this issue as you will either support your own nation, or one you perhaps like from other sports etc. Often supporters go with the stereotypes of nations as to whether they support them (“the Irish are always fun drunks, I will support them!”). Either way it by default gives all viewers some team to invest in.

Everybody complained at the last CTF LAN and the previous TDM events too that one team would dominate. The all-stars lineup/s. They generally did. With nations based events the top players are spread out across Europe, creating a field of many similarly skilled teams.

The all-star teams are often formed just for LAN by picking the best players out of the dominant online teams. So although we see a very competitive online community at the moment (actually to an insane level) the reality of a LAN would see many of those teams torn apart.

People are often very insistent they will attend an event and so you should open it to them, just for them to actually change their mind and never show. National teams are essentially picking from a bigger selection of players for a single lineup, so they can be sure of finding 4 that will ACTUALLY attend.
The hype around nations based events is so clear to see in any game or sport. Look at the world cup going on now, or the Olympics. Think how it seems important to mention ‘Federer’ is Swiss. Why does it matter where he is from, other than to create some kind of national allegiance. In simple terms nations based events are seen as bigger and better. This can either be a cool little LAN for a clan or THE WORLD CUP OF QUAKE.

Players are more likely to travel with others than alone. If they are a nations team it amplifies this fact.

We have had other team LANs but not a nations based one (just the ESL ENC final, which wasn’t event streamed..). You want to be unique or just one of the crowd.

Truth is it will mean some players can’t attend and play. Somebody like mousestar realistically isn’t going to be good enough for the German national team, but if you just base an event on the very few then it won’t be seen as a classic. I am sure the people at the event will have fun, but in my mind it’s the audience that is more important.

As far as I am concerned go all out a nations TDM only (with duel too) or don’t do a nations event and have a smaller TDM and CTF event for fun. I don’t want a half-baked nations event that is confused by additional TDM or CTF, wasting the one major opportunity Quake can really prove itself as a great team game. Seriously I would rather save it or not have it at all then have it as a side event because it would totally ruin the focus.

Here are some ideas to allow others to play if they are worried they will not be able to.
-have more than one team allowed per nation
-allow continent based teams i.e. North America rather than just the USA and Canada separately (although better if they could each field a team)
-allow a few low skilled mix teams representing Europe (not 100% sure of this, but if it’s just guys who wouldn’t get into the national teams then 1-2 teams doing this would be fine.

I might have sounded a bit harsh, but I really do think it would be the best option to arrange with teams and market to sponsors/viewers. But I also think it will not work if it is just tacked on with some other lower level TDM or CTF. Your comments about making it Nations TDM only don't quite get through to me, though. Whilst I entirely agree that the tournament is the "world cup of Quake" (I really like that phrase, btw), I'm not utterly convinced on not being able to run a CTF tournament.

At the end of the day, running an event is running a business and if I have people who are willing to pay to attend a CTF tournament, then who am I to turn them away? Yes, I appreciate it's not the most popular format and won't bring in dozens of teams, but if there are 8 teams willing to participate in a mini CTF tournament, then I'll grant them their wish to do so.

I want Nations TDM to be the focus tournament at the live event (on the assumption we sort everything out to make it Nations TDM for sure).

Actually it wouldn't be awful to have a CTF event, but just not a second TDM. I just think two team events could be really hard to fit into three days with a duel event as well. I don't know what kind of facilities etc you have though.

Some more points:

- As mentioned it is quite important to obviously make sure we have some national teams interested in participating first. It may be that the dates don't suit a lot or that people just are not generally interested in representing their nation. I mean that is highly unlikely but still probably best to gauge how many teams would attend first.

- If some top players won't attend it is irrelevant. Most nations have enough players to still form good teams.

- We could really support each nation that is interested by helping them select a captain and work out a squad selection process. Provide them with travel details and help them look for local sponsors. We can have a range of donation buttons set up for each nation. We can provide every team with custom designed national shirts and a flag when they arrive to really present the event to the public well.

- You need to speak to id and make sure we get LAN servers (like how I am saying we!) and also achievements in game for attendance and top 3 placing. They will do it because we agreed with them before about that kind of thing. We need to agree with them some kind of promotion for it on the Quake Live website, perhaps a count down and a few posts about it in the news over the next few months.

- Lets make sure we get some video producers to make some promo videos, and come to the event for day by day clips like sharpe did for DreamHack winter. After event frag movies and documentary videos too.

- We need to make sure we have a photographer and perhaps get some team photos up and player profile photos up on the website before the event.

- Lets get some kind of name for the tournament like the World Cup that sounds like it is the biggest and best thing ever and make sure we get a hash tag spammed about twitter for months ahead.

- A trophy for the winner (preferably custom designed) would be amazing it looks great in photos etc and maybe some medals.

- stick flags and MAPS everywhere showing how global it is.

I always dislike nations-cup games just because most teams I've come into contact with are just 4 friends who won't ever set up the 'strongest nations team' just because one of their friends then cannot play.
Ofcourse the same goes for regular teams... but theres only 1 nations team per nation (actually in quake for most nations there are only 2 - 6 players who can really compete on international levels).

YOU SIR are on my list of cool people in quake! pushes the list to 6 people... anyway yes a small ctf tournament is definitely doable 8 teams are absolutely realistic. Also I love the idea of having a quake event combining all 3 competetive mods combined gives it a feeling of unity which is not to underestimate in these tough times

The CTF lan was a fun lan and cant be compared to DH TDM with cash prizes. Eventho it was a fun lan it was a sucess of teams, probably as many as tdm had previous DH if im not misstaken.

I didnt read through all comments or what u want to accomplish with this event. If i was the one hosting an event i would go with Duel as i know thats the mod that brings most viewers to stream.
TDM nation is a cool idea, but before announcing that u should look with the nations whos willing to come and whos not. Without spons there might be not to many nations going, and i would like to see ALL nations at that event if that would be happening. If only a few nations would turn up at the event it had been a big failure in my eyes.

For a happy quake community u should do CTF and TDM. tdm 1day, ctf next. finals last. That way you will get tdm teams to participate in the ctf cup aswell and ctf teams/players for the tdm cup. Results in more teams and everyones happy =)

Understatement, the CTF lan was the most entertaining quake tournament I have seen for a loong while. Was sooooooo pissed that the final wasn't finished. I have always been in favor of tdm instead of ctf but that seriously changed my opinion.

Personally I don't agree but why do you think that? Just because the previous 3 events were TDM and this was something 'new'?

More close games/even teams. More exciting moments. More climax/antclimactic moments when there is close caps/denies etc. More display of awesome movement. I guess thats what I'm looking for when trying to be entertained in esports. Never really gave CTF a chance before. Or there has only been good games in the final, like the latest quakecons. Back in the day I just didn't watch at all.

This is compared to other quake team tourneys ofc. Duel is a complete different being imo.

Sorry if you've answered this before, but are are particular reasons you favour tdm instead of ctf? Is it personal preference?

The way I see it is that the only reason to pick tdm is there are slightly more tdm clans than ctf ones.

Pros of choosing ctf:
1. easier to understand. The overall goal of tdm may be clear, but in order to find it interesting you really need to understand quite a bit about the game (items, controlling rooms, etc). I think in ctf can be enjoyed with much less understanding since the goals are simple and similar to something like football.

2. more exciting. Personal taste I suppose. The excitement of a flag run is not matched in tdm imo. In tdm a frag is only interesting if it's something spectacular, in ctf games every cap is significant and every time the flag is picked up it creates a tense/exciting moment.

3. I think more people play ctf? There are slightly more tdm clans, but there are way more people playing pub ctf than pub tdm. If we want more viewers, perhaps they are more likely to watch ctf?

i chose ctf cause it is more fun for me. i wanna move in quake! i wanna steal i wanna run i want fastpasted action. running for your life with the flag or guarding the carrier in an intense match is the best quake can offer me. i always disliked tdm cause its boring for me. tdm is all about aim and controlling if not camping rooms. you chase and get chased which is annoying. in terms of teamplay tdm is highly challenging but top level ctf is precisely coordinated aswell. if you play a tdm game against a team that has superior aim and dodging ur fucked. in ctf you can outsmart and outrun stronger opponents. there are more close matches in ctf and i dont mean close like down to 20 frags i mean close like making the tieing cap in the last minute/seconds. Hence its more interesting to watch

I think it is great you support your mode, it means it is more likely to get tournaments and events if its supporters are vocal. We realised we had to work hard at promoting TDM when id tried to kill it off and promote CTF as their main team mode.

I played a great deal of CTF back in Quake 3. I do not dislike it.

I don't feel either is really easier to understand than the other. I have heard both arguments from new viewers saying the other is more interesting or easy to understand. So really I don't think its worth debating.

My personal taste favours TDM but I enjoy CTF too.

More people play CTF in publics, but less compete. There have been a lot of CTF lans and even more money CTF online events, however I can't remember one event that really worked out as well as it should, where as most TDM events are very competitive and active.

TDM is also a mode that all the top duellers fit into more comfortably rather than CTF.

The simple facts are this. The numbers for the entire weekend of 'The Party' CTF LAN were under half that of the Nations Cup Final TDM that was played on one random Thursday night. The truth is just that TDM is more popular for viewers.

It may do, but the CTF was streamed by zoot on leveluptv too, and we did a second stream too if I remember correctly.

Just to bare in mind. The promotion for the CTF LAN was even less than a normal online cup, you can't take the viewing figures seriously for it. I think drawing comparisons here is bad.

We are comparing it to online events. How often do you see posts telling you we are streaming something from ESR? By the way something like 80% of our refferal traffic comes from ESR.

As I say, at the time we did equal promotion as we would for any online cup. It was last minute on our part though as we were not originally involved as Level Up TV.

We (Level Up TV and the Quake community) are actually bad at promoting our streams and we can improve a great deal in this area.

I feel like nether team game would really get more viewers than the other in reality, but that the CTF community really does not help itself. It comes across as unorganised and juvenile compared to TDM. It also does not have many people strongly promoting it like we do in TDM.

cause we do it in style! promoting cups is so tdm :) you may have the viewer numbers but ctf gets the chicks :P

120hz monitors would make me consider about attending. But this surely looks like another fiasco like in Eindhoven. "Yes I'm trying to get them!". Imo the monitors are the most important factor. First get them, then think about LAN place.

Slower monitors feel like your crosshair was attached with rubber band. You can get used to anything of course, and it will give advantage to players who have played with non-quake monitors before. Going from 60hz to 120hz won't require time to get used to.

Different monitors, some guys getting 60hz, some 75hz, some forced to switch their aspect ratio and some monitors slower in ms than others. Finals not played till end. I call that a fiasco.

i dont know your source but your facts are wrong there were 2 different types of monitors. 120hzers and 75 hzers no one palyed with 60 and i think the 120hzer were forced to 75 but dont pin me down on that. u cant blame the admins for a team that has to leave earlier in case u intend to do that. :)
