I hope people realise how serious I am about this project, I know I do a lot (maybe talk even more) and seem to be overly ambitious. Part of me announcing this was firstly excitement after showing fox the game last evening, and getting great feedback (first time he played the latest build I've been working on) and partly because I do want some kind of community pressure to make sure I follow through with it properly. I find it helps to be quite open and feel like your working on something for others and not just yourself.

But its started, and its fun, I wont try hype hype hype it, cus we're very early in.

I know there might be some nae sayers, but I've tried to support the Quake community the best I can over the years, with sometimes little to no money. I've done everything I've promised, Like paid out all the prize money from the Arena (apart from Evil who needed cash and we forgot to give it to him @ Dreamhack) :/

But yeah, wish us luck, its going be a crazy project to finish that will most likely kill me, its kept me obsessed as of late and destroyed my relationship with my girl lol. but hell, hopefully its so good it destroys many more relationships! woop woop

If you want my attention for your game you gotta:

-Have a sweet netcode, everything hits that should hit. No warpers/no fucking weird shots connecting behind walls.

- Have amazing movement system that feels like osp on 125 fps, floaty but precise movement that is fun. Maybe crouch sliding or whatever, just make it FUN.

- Have weapons that complement each other, each gun should be useful and feel really fun to shoot with amazing combos that show off skill.


If you want the attention of newbs you must:

-Have fun modes for newbs where they can do something other than frag and help their team. think Domination / tf2

- Have EXPOSURE, you need streams of people playing the game, you need videos/vods/casters and media attention

- Have ladders and in game challenges, where you can bet each other depending on who will win/lose

- Have admin involvement and constant feedback (riot games showing you the way)

- Have something to buy in game, possibly items. Think about fun and free game modes and then having newbs buying stuff like invisibility powerup and they can carry that into a game and use it. (would be restricted for real modes and tournaments of course)

If you want the attention of pros you must:

- Have the MONEY for tournaments

-Have an anticheat

2GD you need to consider that there are many fps games that are already in the market and companies already spend millions on such games with huge market research and the planned fast-paced fps game will need quite a lot of time and effort to surpass Quake, UT and maybe SM in gameplay. And when it reaches their level, a new version of those games can outdate it. Moreover, what will be done may not be so much better than these especially better than Quake to make gamers prefer it, but it will be a good start for you and your career as an owner of a company though. I really appreciate what you have been doing so far. You are now a star as far as I see. You won't fail with such dedication to what you have been doing and with so many followers that you have, but the time and the money you will spend on this project is highly risky to yield the expected outcomes which requires to be thought carefully. The result may disappoint you which I don't really want to see. I wish good luck to you with all my heart. I hope you become successful. I believe such games will also help Quake to be played more. We will still continue our efforts to ReLoaD quake, the game we already love, and I think we need to combine our efforts to ReLoaD Quake rather than to power up a new game as good as Quake. You don't really wish him luck. Half of your post was saying how no FPS game will ever be as good as Quake and the other half was trying to brace him for disappointment. Quake 3 was great, but as 2GD said on "Real Talk" that it's outdated for gamers of this new generation. You're acting like Quake was the only girl you ever loved, and that you can't move on because no other girl will be as good as her.

Please do it Minecraft-style - release early Alpha for which we can pay and then and then gradually add more features.

The future of fun first person shooter rests on your shoulder.

I feel like you've chosen a great time for this. There isn't much in the way of fast paced action arcade FPS out there ATM. People are gravitating towards Shootmania and Tribes Ascend just due to lack of options more so than those games being that good. id lost their love for gaming long ago and no one has really picked up the torch for the spirit of Quake.

Here's just a few points that really are important and I want to stress:

-Please don't forget co-op or single player. It may not be the focus but if done right (here's an example hardcore style Doom map watch this) it's awesome and something even super competitive players will get into. Single player and co-op is the gateway for casual players to learn the game. Do you think Starcraft would have taken off like it did without the single player? Single player teaches basic skills and has a larger appeal for beggining players. Epic long hard maps are good for extreme challenge but so are lots of short type maps that are easy to restart and pick up to just play for 15mins. Trick/race maps are good too. Look at Super Meatboy or Angry Birds, some of the maps are hard but since each is relatively short they don't frustrate or annoy too much and are easy to play whenever.

-Related to single player, gameplay needs to be explained via tutorial/campaign mode so a starting player knows most things or can work their way through gameplay to learn. They shouldn't be forced to ask someone on a server how the fuck they are rocket jumping or what the time on items is. Transparency is good.

-Strong items that encourage attacking for the control player/team, not just running item routes constantly while waiting for the other player to fuck up. For example think more QW/Q2/CPM armor system than Q3/QL.

-Less emphasis on reaction based aim weapons such LG/RG/whatever. I love twitch games but it'd be cool to see aim take a bit of a back seat to strat other than vice versa which is typical in Quake (or at least map dependent).

-Up close in your face combat is preferred over constant hiding/running away/sniping. I'm not saying eliminate +back play but we play these games to frag/fight and see action.

-Multiple movement styles. Think for example of a game that had bunny hopping, wall running, strafe jumping, weapon impulse tricks, SR50 (ala doom), etc the more ways to move the merrier. It also lets you put difficulty versus speed and utility. Wall running (think Doom style) could be fast and easy to do but you need a wall which would make you very predictable to aim at and limit where you can move.

-Encourage draft based play for team modes and ELO ranks, etc. North America especially suffers from the stacked clan syndrome where all the best guys join a team or two and kill off any competition. There's a reason pro-sports are regulated and good players can't all join a few teams. Competition is better when the talent is spread across many teams and it also involves many more people this way. More players will also interact with the top players and learn from them if they aren't all clustered together on a few teams.

heh i actually played the demo of that to death, never bought it though. if i remember correctly the game just didnt run very well and i wasnt bothered. if only idsoft or whoever developed the game took some time to polish it, or maybe not use those silly engines that are capped at 60 fps, or multiplies of 30 or whatever it was :D

At those times, pc specs where low, for my example i had a amd64 3000+ & gf5600 non ultra from asus ... played from the two beta's at the beginning (one beta maps each demo) an bought the game >8-)

rather not. crossplatform development gets multiple times more effort and is full of compromises. it's better to make the game windows-only, for not to saturate the efforts.

writing this on mac, i'd prefer to see the game on windows than don't see it at all.

you forgot the whole infrastructure, input/output handling, zillion linux distribs with their weird quirks.... it's not just dx vs ogl thing.

all linux distros are basically the same shit, they all are powered by same kernel. it's just a matter of release cycle and package management.

basically, if they work only with ubuntu in mind, and port it only with ubuntu in mind, there's 99% chance that it'll work out of the box on every other distro.

maybe if they are using some already polished crossplatform engine, it would be less painful. but still it's too much work for a pet project.

they can always gpl the source in that case, from what i heard in that interview with JP it's not like they plan on selling the game, rather sell content (maps, etc), so no harm done, only might get a lot of improvements in a shorter span of time if the community gets on it.

i would be surprised if this is not based on quake 3 code :)

The engine really doesn't matter much, the assets do. Remember Acid's maps ? They demolish the newer maps and that's still what people think about when they think warsow.

This is totally how quakes gained fame and popularity.

I think it's actually the weakest point of the game. Unless the game is really successfull, the community will be rather small - gigantinormous compared to us quake players in general - I fear we'd end up with the usual scheme :

1 : A flood of maps that are just shit will push the ok/good ones away.
2 : People would buy the first few decent/good maps available and never really bother to get newer ones unless a map so great it blows your mind just by looking at the screenshots comes out ( unlikely ) or they're forced to buy new maps because they're in the map pool which would really fucking suck. I might be weird but it's easier for me to imagine myself paying a sub for maps made in house ( made by actual good mappers who know wtf they're doing ) than tossing 2euros here and there for maps by ( talented or not ) random wankers.

Simple, get players fixed with 'try maps out' weekends.

I saw the tweets late last night and got super excited, I heard him on his show talking about making an e-sports fps game, but I never saw that video.

Everything sounds awesome except for the map idea. I don't know how well that's going to play out, if it's an "e-sports fps game", I'd imagine he would give out things like LAN servers and such to the community to use. If he wants to charge $1 for a map, I'm just wondering how that's going to be enforced. If a map is changed to one you don't own, are you kicked from it? Can you access all servers?

I'm also worried about the casual side to it. Three maps with "buy more if you want more maps" sounds troublesome, considering casuals will jump on anything and everything to bash a game, especially if it's DLC related like that.

No doubt in my mind he can make an awesome e-sport fps game, I'm just worried it's going to be geared too much at "us", the casuals won't get into it, and it will be just a very niche fps game, just bringing it to it's death quicker.

I'm pumped as fuck though for it :D If anyone can do it, it's definitely him.

What id software didn't get was exactly that. With f2p games there are less paying customers, but there are enough items to buy that in the end they end up paying an awful lot more if they want to have more content.
QL is by far the cheapest "freemium" game I've ever seen, which ended up in being a bad thing ("business failure", getting like 10 maps a year, etc.). $24/$48 a year tops (because you can only buy one account and there aren't more items) is just retarded.

Games are more expensive than they used to be, but it doesn't appear like they are. That's the beauty of it.

Quake maps in Xonotic are placeholders till we get more quality Xonotic maps. Finding someone who can create a map of ztn quality in a opensource community is damn hard and 2gd might face the same problem if he relies on community content a lot (instead of paying professional mappers).

Finding people who will agree to suck donkey cocks on a new promising map for a week instead of playing ztn is even harder.

Well I hope reborn will attract new players and not only quakers, else it's doomed to fail anyway.

The feeling I get from the information given through the JP interview is that the whole concept of the game is to deliver solid gamplay mechanics, esports related features and an infrastructure that allows people to easily create content themselves. Which is basically 90% of what players wanted to see out of QL, I don't get how the same people can still be questioning the potential success of such a project, when they're saying QL didn't succeed because the lack of those excact features and a lack of proper promo.

especially when you consider what the community did for the quake series and its potential to create better content than professional devs. The community's Quake mods and maps are IMO at least a good 60%, if not more, of what makes the game appealing to me.

I think it's important to note that SM has promised the EXACT same things as 2GD. One of them is the copycat of the other. Personally I think SM overheard 2GD and now they try to make what he wanted to make. Although they fail terribly. Which I think is the reason 2GD got mad at Fazz for liking SM (fazz admitted that in the QL arena where av3k won, also I talked to him @ DH about it).

I am, however, certain that "Reborn" will be much, much better than SM. 2GD knows what we want, Nadeo knows what the racing community want. It would be silly if "Reborn" would fail if SM gets successful.

This has to be proven. Sure, if he creates just another quake clone then it will be rated "much, much better" by the esr crowd but it wont be much more than a niche game. I hope this kicks off 2GD, quake seems to have stagnated and ID itself looks like it's either a) run out of ideas or b) given up on a decent online FPS.

I know you need x ammount of money in order to create a top tiered game, but surely the experience of people with in the community would be more then happy to help. If there's any kind of visual creativity needed i'm more then happy to do some volunteer work in the evenings.

Imo someone like 2GD with such a big obsession for fps games doin a shooter himself is maybe the best thing that can happen and from what he told about this project in the interview i cant wait to play it!

I don't know how far 2GD is in developing this, but over and above the Business Model, Game Modes and Rules, Network Code, Input Code, Sound Code, 3D engine and Maps, there will need to be a massive amount of work done on the artistic side. The models, sounds, textures weapons and everything else will need to be developed with a single consistent artistic vision that will shape the overall feel of the game which cannot be underestimated. Community artistic contributions are ok when you're working on an already developed game like Quake, but when designing something from scratch you need a team of experts working closely together for long time to get it right - this is something id Software always excelled at. The cost of a design project like that will be quite considerable unless you're happy for it to look like Warsow... Nadeo already had their own in house team and resources to use. I hope 2GD has some serious financial backing otherwise... Oh dear :(

But if he has the backing, and wants to develop the ultimate competitive fps based on everything we have learned about gameplay since the original Quake, then wow! I can't wait!!!

It's always a good news to see some project raising from the community with such a goal. Nevertheless, I might be wrong but I don't think that yet another closed-source product with no open dev will have a chance to grow and survive enough, except for a small population.
The best thing id ever done was to share their code with a free license, allowing people to improve their knowledge and bringing new idea and improvements.
To make it short, if you got some money to spend, use it for media/assets artists and ads and open this project with a free and collaborative license.

you have a point there. Following how games have been "balanced", in quake5/reborn/etc. railgun will do 50 damage with a 5 seconds reloading time.

Actually the overall level of guns damage does tremendous impact on the game. With high enough damage you can make the game very punishing despite it being very fast.

There are more games than q3 out there, which is very very dated in all aspects including sounds and aesthetics, and no one cares about unrealistic fps games that aren't halo.

If anything what I want is something more...."mature", that doesn't look like something aimed at 8 year old kids, and that isn't q3/q4/q2 but "new".

I don't get how q3 is aimed at 8 years old. The sounds are perfect and so are the variety of maps and models. The weapons were perfect and looked e-sportish, simple and nice. The sounds are pleaseant to ears, unlike q4 and q2.

Reborn is going to use fucking robots.. again. I hope they are as a cool as Keel, tho. And I hope it doesnt got a techy unfertile feeling like Q4 and Q2, they are terrible.

My point is most current games are, not q3.

If you want to play q3 play it or play ql. I, and the whole world considering how dead q3 and ql are, want something new (as in different) and that isn't severely dated like q3 is. If you disagree I suggest you to play some newer games and/or read some quake arena arcade reviews.

Also I think reborn should target a different audience than "us" the hardcore guys. Lets face it we are 0.000001% of potential customers, and personally I miss the days when fast paced fps games were popular.

it's pretty shit compared to other 2D games. Also, the figthing genre is much more easier to make it pleasant and fun for everybody. A competitive FPS is much more complex. If you were to compromise strafe jumping to make it pleasant for a wider audience you are killing the game already.

Fighting games are way more complex than all fps games with the sole exception of dueling, which is a very rare "discipline" and even that is debatable.
SF4 is a good compromise between skill cap and noobs being able to stand a chance against better players, just like they tried in q3 (a carmack interview somewhere) which they did in comparison to QW/Q2 but not enough.

I think there's no need to make movement overly complex to be enjoyable (it's the q3 engine what makes it feel sexy), and there are other aspects that can be easily simplified while maintaining their appeal: timing (all ending in a "0" instead of "5", 10 20 30 etc.), team work (decent hud overlay or even a map with only teammates position [not enemy no matter if they make sound or see them], in built chat comm, well put objectives), not a million commands, tutorials, etc.

Tutorials are of the essence. Right now in QL if a complete noob doesn't have someone to teach him he will never get to even tier4 in ffa, whereas he could improve massively by knowing he has to time at least the RA and quad, how the changing weapons delay works, positioning and weapons to use in each situation (the very basics), not dying, etc.

I did watch the video from above and he mentioned that there is an option for crowd funding or kickstarter but only after the game is 6months in development. That said you could think that the kickstarter will maybe around easter, hope so because he did not mention very much for the game. Male female characters, 5maps and physics engine. Well wait and see I guess. But I would likely donate even 50$ if it included 5extra maps, Maybe Signed name in Credits, Or some Permanent Logo for the character.

Well in fact you can't because it's iD and they allways say when its done. So I'm not expecting anything from doom4, maybe they make something ridiculous and put multiplayer inside worth waiting but the game will for sure be a true doom 3 sequel with a perfect atmosphere for singleplayer.

As for reborn, we are all expecting this to be the next best big thing for gamers and it's been a year, on top of that it's been 6 months since last update or any clue that this is at least going by the plans or not by the plans or anything. In total.....total lack of informations even leaked ones.

There should be no information at such early stages. I just worry he has been playing too much DotA 2. Non-competitive kiddy games can really warp a perspective on what should be a competitive "E-sports" title.

In a recent video interview, 2GD explained that he has only told people so early because this meant he is committed to the project and much more motivated to keep going when things go wrong.

I think this is a valid point and people should really get off their high horse. He's an individual guy who's trying to accomplish his dream, and he tells people about it so that they can help him along the way (if only by constantly reminding him that they want him to deliver).
