Not to take anything away from Dahang, but damn, rapha was playing so timid in that match. There was times on dm13 where he'd have all but maybe one YA and would still chill in one of the side areas. Hopefully we'll get to see a nice final though.

well theres a few ways to do it, if anybody has some kind of screen capture software you just set the region of the screen to record. Or if anybody has xsplit you could stream the stream to an account on twitch.tv and the vods will immediately and automatically be uploaded to your twitch page.

We're gonna have to sort these things out ourselves because certain people at quakecon aren't capable.

yeah well, i've managed to compress my files on same good quality...
~200 mb for 20 mins, so that's not something I can't upload, would probably only last a night or so of uploading to some service..

gonna do it and upload if nobody restreams.

edit: just saw duel masters final at 4am, not gonna be up for that 100% so someone else should do at least that.

edit2: won't do it at all... not gonna be home, sry.

My point was that, whilst the iem finals were at an awkward time for you; there was the reward of having continuous coverage/casting of all important matches with no technical hitches. Whereas this time around; we stay up to the designated time to find no coverage whatsoever, no vods, not even demos: absolutely no "reward".

That was my point :)

I wasn't trying to be like "oh we've had it really bad too having to wake up early!" I was merely stating a fact and that was it. So I'm not sure why people keep bringing up counters to my original statement as if they feel they need to justify being upset by the 4am match time because when it ultimately comes down to it, we've all been fucked over by this "coverage."

Actually, the match for bronze was the first watchable game I've seen so far. Super smooth and it actually looked decent with their high quality cfg. Shame it took them this long to sort out.

My written diarrhoea is out of love. Perhaps my whine about todd hollenshead boasting about the insane bandwidth they have available actually encouraged them to set-up a 2nd stream. I like to think so at least ;(

It's not actually, because most people didn't experience those problems.

HD video at a high bitrate at 60 fps isn't a walk in the park, but you can get a computer that can watch it these days for quite cheap. Go educate yourself.

I have a good computer that runs HD video fine, but quakecon streams somehow take more processing and crash and lag more than any other video or stream.

Russian streams in 60 fps with 720p? Smooth, as hell.

Quakecon 240p? Nothing but cracks, lags, stutters and shit. It's just shit set-up.

Shit streams have nothing to do with computers what so ever.

Go educate yourself.

Ran smoothly here on my pc, and not smoothly on my laptop, which has much older hardware, so obviously something is wrong with your shit. I know how difficult it is to accept that you're wrong.

I also watched the finals on a mobile phone on 3G internet and it was perfectly watchable. Dunno why I even bother here, you obviously don't know what you're talking about, and you're obviously not going to stop talking.

My computer runs HD streams perfectly fine, with a few exceptions and those are routing or poorly set up and run streams. Those streams have nothing to do with my computer, at all. They're annoying. own3d is usually the culprit, but even the russians are able to stream HD on own3d and it works perfectly fine for me.

This guy mentions multiple reasons why the stream is shit (double sound, what fucking stream doesn't check for god damn double sound before going live? Shit streams son, shit streams don't.)

Same. It was clear from last zotac already, czm's lg was very shaky and his rail wasn't as bossy as it used to be. QuakeCon was just following the same trend.

Dahang has been playing amazingly well on regular occasions lately and I'm not surprised at all to see him in the final. It will be a good watch since cypher is on fire too.

On dm13 rapha had huge stack advantage for most of the map, and didn't commit to one fight, but always backed down at the very end. Dahang just stacked back up each time and eventually outpositioned rapha after 14 minutes, turned the stack advantage around and soon a frag followed.
Plus I haven't seen those incredible reads from rapha that he's well known for, where he knows what the enemy is thinking. Most of times on dm13 he looked clueless about Dahang's position.

I did cancel my subscription earlier today because there are less and less duels going. QuakeCon itself as an event didn't affect my decision in any way. So there.

Now, seeing Mr. Hollenshead and Mr. Stratton (in the video which was part of the story linked above) acting like the way they did towards the then QuakeLive finalists, it was clear to me that my decision to cancel my subscription was twice as good as I thought it would be.

I subscribe to QuakeLive to support the game and its players. Gone are the days where QuakeLive has any appeal especially for someone in North America where the game is all but a deathly husk of what it used to be.

I subscribed to QuakeLive because I didn't want to be one of those free players, constantly bitching and moaning about lack of content; I wanted to be a subscriber to be JUSTIFIED in my bitching and moaning about lack of content AND support. God forbid, there are some of us who support it because we don't want to see guys like Cypher, Rapha, Dahang, Zero4, Spartie, Cooller, and the plethora of other awesome and amazing players be FORCED to change games or disappear because there was no support.

However, when the developer itself doesn't give a shit and the event that is supposed to hold one of the last remaining few big QuakeLive tournaments gets practically shit on, why the fuck should I support it? I can play the game for free anyways.

Fuck id, and you're right... you really are stupid.

Because QuakeCon is not a Quake tournament, they just host Quake tournaments although they have never been the main focus and coverage/streams have always been shit with huge delays, no "filler" content etc. The only time the stream was entertaining throughout the weekend was when 2GD ran things last year.

Besides streaming the same 4-5 Videos over and over again with ppl running around in an fps with bearsuits and bananas, you could have added a 6th with some crazy QL scenes and a msg like "PLAY THE FUCKING BEST FPS OUT THERE" @ www.quakelive.com.
I'm sure some1 out of the community would have even done it for free.

it's a bit late in the year, but i'm all about streaming as many videos as possible (especially from quake live). in the past we've streamed some videos done by byoc folks, even.

next year i'll post a few weeks before quakecon and try to put together a good reel of frag videos / quake live highlight vids and such. should make things less repetitive.

I just want to say fear & jehar are a fantastic casting team for quake

usually jehar gives his co-caster some weird jokes that they can't keep up with but fear just gives it back and makes the commentary pretty fun. also fear has good background knowledge of players and map knowledge (for ctf at least)

I am highly enjoying his casting, especially with jehar.

I maintain that mattc0m and his cowboy team messed it all up for a 3rd year running. Excluding casters who do what they're told. Pretty sure I haven't mentioned [id]

Although seeing as you bring it up, yes I will be thinking about not renewing my subscription when it expires at the end of this month due to id software's lack of interest in the game. See id software didn't make this final great, they couldn't give a fuck, nor mattc0m and his cowboy team, the players and the casters made it a great final.

Maybe you have me confused with somebody else.

AMAZING final.

Cypher king of aerowalk.

Cypher did to Dahang on t7 what he did to Cooller on aerowalk...insane.

Since the final map wasn't as close, I still think the Cypher vs Cooller final was better.

WP Cypher. WP DaHanG. Thanks for making the final so entertaining. Definitely needed it after the 'coverage' that has been going on this event.

prolly a lot of factors go into why the last map was such a blowout (in comparision to the cooller series)

-dahang lost 2 in a row, cooller lost 1 (then played an evenly matched ztn but had an amazing start on it as well if u recall)
-dahang made a massive mistake (1 wrong move, rest of the game was fine and it was a simple jump), cooller played poorly on map 4 in general.

this was true for the DHS 2012 tournament as well. cypher played 2 really close games, but then the last one was a blowout (probably ran out of steam).

Great finals... i set alarm clock to wake up to see it... and i have no regrets, almost makes up for the whole crappy event.

after 0:2 i somehow knew Cypher will win Aero in style (ALO CRAZY ROCKETS!).. and then on t7 such a close game, i was really impressed how he played out of control (even though he was missing a lot of shots he still managed to win). Lost World... well, no idea, something happened to Dahang and he snapped?

GG both, was grand finals worthy of Quakecon.

no clue how cypher managed to hold the score on 1-0 for so long on ztn, I don't even dare to imagine the amount of pressure.
i might be wrong, but it's not the first time cypher wins a b05 from a 0-2 score, that's impressive

on the other hand dahang played in such a marvellous way, yet his aggressive style which might work on other maps, costed him the final map and thus the match

Its even incomprehensible how cypha managed to hold to his 50/50 or 70/00 stack for so many times. It was like the return of the Divine Aero vs Coolah multiplied by 4 ('cause cyphe actually had next to no problems on the 5th map).

Its a pity Dahang slipped on lw, but its in no way depends on spawns ffs! Dahang had a lot of opportunities to slow down the pace and turn the score in his favor, but he somehow couldn't manage his head-cooling. Uber aggression worked fine on the first two maps until cypher worked out the counter-measures against such a piledriver techniques. It worked against the demi-godlike cooller, so it'll work against anyone on earth, except maybe rapha. It still remains a mystery - how does Cypha manages to stay alive for so long without any solid hp? Its like fucking chess against super-computer - it can throw away half of his army at the fist turn and still win. HOW THE FUCK DID HE DO THAT? Is he a skynet operative?

This show really compensates every fail the failcon brought to us this year. No thanks to orgs, however, but thanks to such an amazing Gladiators of Quake as Cypher, Dahang and a few others. Today's The day the niggaz took over!

Yeah id, go on fiddling with your tickets and shirts, bring bubblegum next year to throw it into the crowd for the whole event timespan and don't forget to stream it all instead of Quake, ofc.

But people don't behave like objective logical machines and they don't compare what they see against "not viewing anything", they compare it with whatever expectations were arisen by pre-event hype.
E.g. if I promise you a great interesting job with huge salary, and then next day call and tell that I'm sorry but the job is no longer available, you would be disappointed, even though nothing objectively changed for you ("net result" is zero, not negative).

Thought I'd write a little summary from what I saw this weekend.

Day 1 was a complete shambles, one stream showing Carmack's keynote which is fine I enjoyed watching the VOD of it on youtube since I couldn't watch it live because I was too busy trying to find the stream for the actual tournament which of course, there wasn't one.

I enjoyed the CTF coverage because after much whining from the QL community mattc0m and his cowboy team apparently worked all night to fix up a second stream for the games. That's right they seemed to have forgotten about the games so had to put in some extra effort to make sure they got streamed. Yeah, like a computer, a copy of xsplit and an internet connection won't take care of that.

Today seemed to go well except for akward moments where the casters were showing us around a map whilst we are are looking at them at their desk. Waiting until 20 seconds into a game until they change camera to the in game view but those things are to be expected at quakecon. Dispite the poor organization from the mattc0m cowboys during the start of the tournament the final did not disappoint, and that's thanks to cypher, dahang and the casters.

I think the first day speaks volumes though for what quakecon is and what It's about. Or rather what it's not about. It's not about quake that's for sure, it seems quakelive is more of an inconvenience for them than anything.

about the key moment vs cypher in final. should have done a little rocket jump through the yellow armor doorway to avoid cyphers rockets and to get to the left side of the pillars so cypher cant use that postional advance behind the pillar and lg him to death

Epic final up until dm13. I think dahangs head went went after he lost t7, a game he should have won. there was a key moment in that game when he had cypher down down to 40hp in the rg room nd decided to leave the room instead of moving in for da kill, he lacked the courage in that crucial moment, if that was cypher he would hav got the kill. He was also in control for the majority of the game but didnt get the crucial frags. What can you say about Cypher! Whats amazing is when hes staring down the barrel of defeat he starts playing better, those rockets on aerowalk were fukin INSANE nd he pulls off the craziest shit when it really matters in games. I feel sorry for dahang but CYPHER IM COVINCED IS QUAKE GOD! ALL HAIL CYPHER!

I haven't seen the final yet but this is how I predicted it would go down.

Just wish they would hurry up with the VODs. Americans complained that they had to do the same for IEM and DH, the difference is the VODs were immediately available as soon as the game ended. Not mailed to the head office of id software and disappeared into the abyss.

Amazing finals.

I'm glad something good was salvaged from this trainwreck, thanks to the players, casters and surprisingly animated audience. I'd also like to thank the gentlemen (had to watch 3rd map from Russian vod c:) who uploaded the final games to youtube, i wasn't able to watch the games live and with no vods in sight, i'd miss one of the greatest finals in the history of QL.

I'd end this on a positive note about learning from mistakes for future years and shit like that but... yeah.

In Dahang's defence over his dm13 implosion, i think everyone who played duel knows how deceptive aggression is on that map. You think you have the guy low, so you throw yourself in, and you lose a frag, and another, and another, and another, and he never seems to go down, and it's SO FUCKING FRUSTRATING. A player as experienced as him should have known better, but what can ya do. He still delivered, imo. Beating Rapha, pushing Cypher to his absolute limits. He deserves props for this.

Ignoring accumulated wins and prize money for the moment, I'd rate cypher higher than rapha anyway. With rapha in his best moments, anything he does appears to be driven by the sole wish to win. While cypher seems to maintain a certain sense for playfulness and artistry even in the most fierce finals.

Might be not as effective given the goal, but it sure is most awesomest to watch.

Just like to say thanks and well done to the casters zoot, Jehar, Disrepute and Fear.

Under the circumstances I think they did a great job - especially when casting the demos (they must have known the results of each match even if just by the number of demos) they still made it feel like it was just happening :D I don't think any of them were very happy with the setup, but they carried on like pros and provided some great casting!

I'm not being sarcastic - I don't think any of the cockups were their fault. We all know that both LevelUp and QuakeliveTV are able to stream and cast competitions in an organised and competent way, yet every year it's a complete farce at QuakeCon. Conclusion: It's the QuakeCon organisers that are complete f*ckwits and the casters just try to make it work. Given that - I think they did a good job.

Stopped reading at some asus cup.

For Quake live the only really big and serious tournament was
IEM WC and rapha won both.(Also note he didn't get the sens bug on them)

If you want to add minor tournaments add zotac, hell they were harder then most of those and strenx would have won with a huge list.

Those don't count because they weren't "international". Not gonna bother putting rules to that because it's quite obvious which do and which don't.

For example 2 players invitationals (fatality counts them but whatever) and Aussie lans don't but IEM European/USA finals do, and Asus cups would if killsen, strenx, stermy, etc. attended, which isn't the case so are discarded.

You "forgot" to mention that when Cypher signed up to zotacs, strenxie rarely won, so if Cypher would have been less lazy, that record would be his.
Also, it's important to point out that Dahang but mostly Rapha couldn't sign up to zotacs cup due to the implayable pings deriving from connecting from America.
That's the reason Rapha have never won a single zotac, if i'm not wrong.
But anyway, a lot of high pros rarely signed up, peoples like av3k, k1llsen, cooller, stermy, etc. etc. .

Zotac is an online cup so it shouldn't really count - the level playing field (ping etc) and pressure of a LAN is what counts really. The fact that strenx could win all those zotacz but zero, nada, null, zilch LANs shows that its not the same thing at all. For example Dahang has beaten rapha in online cups and in general online matches, but the fact that he's beaten him at a competitive LAN means alot more and people are raising eyebrowes...

dahang looked unbeatable in first 2 maps, upto second half of 2nd one, but he had enough of a lead.

especially on ztn, cypher did everything right and hit every shot to make a comeback but dahang kept his cool, both players played the map by the book really, was a matter about who got control first.

sad about dm13, if dahang could have gotten a few mins rest to gather his thoughts back in line after that moral blow on t7, we might have seen a better last map.

lol just read this thread after leaving qcon. funny i wouldve been one of you guys busting qcon for its coverage. but oddly enough being there was a blast. :)

i have to say for the most part syncerror and the team that ran the actual tournaments did a great job. but the lack of streaming coverage was a little difficult to even believe at first. its weird that they would think people who pretty much only come on stream to watch the games would stick around for a fucking panel discussion (cant think of any other reason for not having alternative streams).

gonna be so sad if they dont upload vods of our ctf games.

it was only the keynote that had the conflicting stream issue. we never planned on running 2 streams, but we were able to put together enough hardware to run 2 streams without issue by ctf day (friday) and finals (saturday).

Actually that has been our only focus since 2009 (since we werent even there in 2008...). the fact that the stream went down was not our fault. we did our best to bring you as much coverage from our end and streaming the panels was a requirement of us. we pay attention to everything on our side of things, and what people cant seem to understand is that despite us being the ones brought in to do the coverage, there are still hundreds of people behind the scenes we have to work with. everything is affected by something/someone else.

because "they" don't determine the game times. streamers have little control over when the games are played. they can put in requests to the tournament organization team but there are lots of other factors involved.

im not trying to justify the lack of coverage. just that it isnt as simple as it seems. it should still be fixed imo, and there are really no excuses. but putting it all on qltv is a bit much.

ps: different for vods and shit. i wonder if id themselves are going to delay the vods or its some other issue.

we did arrange coverage outside of tourney/streaming hours on day 1. since the stream went down, myself and zoot recorded demos of every single duel masters game and we played those back on stream and casted over them trying to bring you every game (actually more games) that u guys missed. we were up all night doing this and those games went our on stream that night, yes they were on much later but they still made it up there. and wonko is right. we have no control over what we are required to stream, we simply nod our heads and do what we are told to do since we dont run the show. and again, the stream troubles were not our fault but i would rather not get into that. we just hope that if u did not get to see the games streamed live that the VODs will be up soon enough so u can see how epic most of the games were.

Plastic car with fake vents and leaf springs. Undrivable in the city, absurdly expensive to maintain for what it is and everyone who owns a current one is a retard.

Literally a huge engine with good stock tires and somewhat good exterior looks (more like name recognition), while the rest is completely missing. Of course the more expensive versions are better, but they are rare and for the price in any segment you can get a miles better car.

doesn't matter, a champion deserves something like that much more than any random BYOC guy. In fact, the "right" thing to do would be to use "all that" byoc money you said to give the champion a really good prize, in this case that car, and the byoc guy $ 9000 maybe.

I mean, someone plays the game for years, wins a fucking hard championship (well not SO hard this time) and only gets "pennies"? While a BYOC guy... oh well I won't repeat it. The point is who REALLY struggles and sweats doesn't get very much in return.

But yeah I agree with you about sponsorship money, and that banana game, from what I could see looks mostly crap gameplay wise. "Pretty" graphics, customization of your character, but all you can really do to hit enemies is move a little, point and shot? No bunny hopping, no strafe jumping, very few weapons which are all hitscan... blah

Second - the entire idea of giving away things to the audience should be looked from a strictly business point of view.
You (as a company) don't look at what's fair or not - you just do what is better for the company. If giving away cars gets more and more people each year to attend, go ahead do it (the car is sponsored any way so its free give away).

If each year id gives away cars to lets say top 3 places, the audience wouldn't really care - but if they give 3 cars to random audience members, you can bet people will want to come.

Having more regular people coming means much more income from tickets.

Bigger prize money might attract more people but I think only if it's much bigger, few grand here and there don't count much.

As for giving cars - again not from id's pocket - its sponsored so who can complain about that.
They can't go to Ford and tell them "you know what? instead of the car give me 50,000 which half of it we'll give to first place duel champ".

But, like you said, it feels unfair. And while I talked about the business aspect of the event, I do agree that the company that made Quake should support it more than DreamHack or Zotac and not support Banana game or other stupid shit that has nothing to do with the community.

Blizzard isn't perfect - but id could sure learn a lot from them.

It's kinda sad, quakecon, which should be the best or one of the best quake tournaments, is actually the one where a lot of shit happens year after year. This time including streaming problems, top pro players not comming, still no vods, still no demos. And the other tournaments that hold quake, but are not quakecon, go very well, and don't give away prizes much more valuable than what the champion (and other top placers) gets.

Well it doesn't have to be a laptop, just let the people who actually want to show and cast live games show them. I know that zoot would have loved to stream and cast every one of those games LIVE on day 1 but he wasn't allowed to or had no means of doing so. I don't mean to direct so much blame towards mattc0m, I don't fully know what his job is but I'm pretty sure he has alot to do, maybe too much which is why Quake Live gets neglected year after year. I know if level up was taking care of the QL stream, we would have vods, demos and cfgs by now. Or maybe it's just id software being retarded and refusing to allow vods and demos to be released until they get sent to the head office or some stupid bs like that. It wouldn't surprise me one bit.

how come dreamhack runs every event perfectly (with 2 a year) while there are major issues in quakecon since live coverage started?

for example, did you get the demos? cfgs? more than 5 player interviews?
I already know the answers, and those 3 have nothing to do with management or people blaming each other.

Or more importantly, it truly seems like you don't run a general test before the event. Otherwise there's no way a stream runs at 15fps instead of the promised 60, then say it isn't technically possible to run 2 streams (mattcom, day1 thread) but do it anyway in day2.

Just be clear on a few things:

- VODs are being worked on (had to get a harddrive overnight shipped to me), will be uploaded ASAP. I'm working on a complete package that will have VODs, interviews, photos, and hopefully some other behind-the-scenes footage as well.

- I never drink on the job. There's a small party on Saturday night, during / after the finals, but that's it. I'm not really sure where this rumor started, but I kind it fairly hilarious in how its not based in any sort of truth.

- A laptop and a small crew cannot run a QuakeCon stream. It's difficult to explain in detail, but basically the setup is very complicated. It involves a full audio and visual mix, running audio/visual feeds to a separate A/V company, and ensuring everything is working on two live streams and being fed to the main stage on top of various recording and encoding tasks. Any professional production crew at the "big events" like Dreamhack and IEM are run by huge teams of people (much larger than ours) with a ton of resources (we have only limited). I will address this issue a bit later and in more detail, I am working on an ESR blog.

I really want to improve things every year, so if anyone has any complaints, I definitely want to put it all out on the table and address them as plainly as possible. I am not trying to have an attitude with anyone here at ESR, so I do want to apologize if I come off that way. Me and my "team of cowboys" are actually all fairly soft spoken, level-headed individuals who are just trying to do as best of a job with what we have.

And don't like 7 people run dreamhack? plus volunteers of course.

Well that's the difference right there. We're not running coverage of a single game at a games tournament from a single PC, we're running coverage for an entire gaming event that requires 4-5 PC's at a minimum, with full-time audio mixing, video mixing, etc.

My comparison was to full-time production companies (like the main events at Dreamhack, MLG, IEM, etc.) to ours. We're expected to deliver big results in terms of productions with a very complicated setup, and yet we have nowhere the size of the team nor the resources to accomplish that. Each year we get a step closer and closer, though.

I not only completely respect levelup for what they do, but I envy them for the events they cover. QuakeCon is a lot different in terms of what goes on behind the scenes, and while I'm not saying our job is harder--it's far more complex to run.

Things were less-than-perfect this year, I acknowledge that completely, but there's a lot of assumptions being made about how running a stream off a single PC is comparable to the production at QuakeCon. There is a lot of huge, fundamental differences.

It seems more complicated than it needs to be to be honest, at least the QuakeLive coverage side of things. I'm sure all the behind the scenes stuff is pretty complicated which is why you should concentrate on that because it's probably more than enough to deal with. QuakeLive is a burden to you, and it doesn't need to be on the big main QuakeCon stream anymore, except for the grand finals. I hope you understand the significance of day 1 when you were streaming John Carmack whilst almost the entire duel tournament was played.

All it takes to stream QuakeLive is PC, xsplit, a twitch/own3d account and a decent internet connection +casters. No matter which way you look at it, that IS all it takes. That's how it's done everywhere except QuakeCon, and QuakeCon is the only tournament that the coverage consistantly lets every QuakeLive viewer down year after year. Coincidence? Next year just put zoot and disrepute in a corner with a PC, as long as they're connected to QuakeCon's super amazing ultra fast internet, there won't be a problem. That frees up your time to sort out the main Quakecon stream. You're happy because you don't have to deal with us whiney fuckers, and we're happy because we get to watch some quake.
