Basically the "intended" platform for the majority of the competitive fighting games was the arcade cabinet which has it's own regional dependent control setup ( Japanese, Korean, American cabs ) and they got ported to consoles later on, making arcade sticks the sub-platform standard between them, note that pad adapters do exist for cabs, but they are rare.

Some games like MK9 and injustice were designed with a gamepad in mind ( stupidly lenient inputs, less strict link timing...etc), while some games didn't get an arcade release but were designed with an arcade stick in mind ( eg.: Skullgirls, MVC3/UMVC3 ).

and you can go over the executional pros and cons for both, and none get a clear winner.

On the other hand the only reason arcade sticks exist for fighting games is that they were the input devices readily available at the time when making cabinets, an example of a controller built with fighting games in mind is the Hit-Box and that takes clear inspiration from arcade sticks and just removes the main con in an arcade stick.

The Dpad still looks shit aswell so not good for fighting games.

They should just use the D-Pad from the saturn or the 6 button megadrive D-pad. The Dpad was elevated, and was decent, but if you're serious about fighters, get a fightstick TE and be done with it as you literally have a cross section arcade cabinet in your hands and you can order the bits you want.

But I don't agree with getting a stick and being done with it, there are some pros and cons to both.

there are so many advantages the "console hater, pc is best guy" just WONT hear it.

Console gaming is too limited to even consider it, and the only effect is splitting up the gaming communities. It's like having PC quake and console quake, where you try to hit 45% LG with a stick. Or better still, console Starcraft, where you win battles and "micro" by mashing the triangle button really fast.

The idea of using a keyboard and mouse to play is stupid in the first place, well I can see the mouse being good, but a keyboard is just wrong.

Sure it's bad for gaming...it was designed for typing, not gaming ergonomics.

The main argument, considering this is an e-sports site, is that fightning games (and probably sport games like fifa) are the only area where consoles have a note-worthy presence in e-sports. Everything else is played better on a PC.

Well my "single affordable platform" post kind of goes over this....

Games run different on different PCs, one of the most prominent examples is the whole quake series running on a pc with an ATI card and one with a nvidia card, they have issues on both but generally you get less frame drops on your nvidia card and lighting is better.
Now look at Street fighter 3 3rd strike, on it's original system the CPS-3 arcade board, it has different frame rates per stage and character mix, which in turn makes the game faster and slower with those variables, now in the PS2 port the game runs at a stable 60 most of the time but it doesn't feel like the arcade, which is a gripe loads of arcade players have about it even though it's technically arcade perfect in every other aspect, heck you could even consider it better.
I even remember switching PCs and playing quake with the same desk and input devices and it felt " weird " , I get this same feeling when using PS3s of different model numbers ( different smaller cpus ) when playing fighting games, something is always off when you have a difference in your hardware.
Now if we all played on a single stable setup, we could avoid these issues.

OH...and I can only imagine the amount of weird I'd feel if I still played the shit fest that is SSF4AE on PC and switched PCs, my one frame link consistency would probably be gone.... but I don't own the game on PC so I don't give a shit and neither do I play it anymore.

Please don't blame the platform for the incompetence of the developers. The amount of screw-ups in QL's engine is absolutely surreal (which is understandable when you hire 2 stoned monkeys to code for you)

Then, the omission of the absolute BASIC principle to include timers in your loops so that game runs at the same speed regardless of fps is entirely the fault of the programmers.

If done right and thoroughly, you can get amazing performance and scalability out of any platform. As there are bad examples, such as QL running at 85 fps on lowest settings on monster PCs, there are also positive examples, of games that look and feel great even on lower-end systems.

Afaik, fps has a direct impact on the speed of a videogame, and as a quaker, we should know... In q3, running at 900 fps made you running and jumping like in low gravity...
Shadow of the Colossus is the only game that had it like a "feature", when moving around it was ok, but whenever you were on a colossus it slowed down to sometimes 5 fps or so, adding a fantastic sense of majestic;
In games like Metal Slug huge frame drops are substantially a cheat, you can move like Neo in the matrix.

All of them examples of bad programming. Not hardware. Why? Because there are plenty more examples of games running at the designed speed and parameters regardless of 30 or 300 fps.

Please show some examples of 2D games, that don't have this issue...., frame skip exists in loads of fighting games the but loads opt not to use it so it doesn't mess with the inputs.

(some argues that it felt better with the contestual slow motion).

A fighting game has a round time of 3 minutes. Since the console it runs on has slow hardware and the programmers were as dumb as chimps on meth, the game consistently runs at 15 fps and everything happens in slow motion, so that the round ends up lasting 6 minutes in real time. As such, the game runs twice as slow due to low fps.

An example of good programing is the same fighting game, running at the same 15 fps, but the round lasting exactly 3 minutes in real life. Things happen as fast as they SHOULD, you just see few frames (and as many frames as in the bad example).

Every event in a game must be programmed in relation to the computer's internal timer, otherwise you end up with stupid games where a fps drop means everything goes to slo-mo.

For the sheer proccessing and rendering power of the game, it makes almost no difference whether a complex scene runs in slow-mo or at normal speed, since the same amount of polygons, textures and effects have to be rendered. A drawn-out single explosion requires the same proccessing and rendering power as two successive explosions.

Either its not managed/coded well enough, or the art/design is too intensive for the technology, in which case its the artists/designers fault.

"900 fps effect" was due to integer rounding errors. It has been fixed in ql and jump height doesn't depend on fps.

looks like they straight out copied ps4 gpu/cpu combo, if its really 8 cores than all those console to pc ports are going to be as painful as gta4, requiring 8 core cpu, if intel comes out with 8 core cpus. if not than maybe they wont be that stupid about it. most fucked up it somehow runs at 1.6ghz, either they are just fucking with us and it really is a 4cpu core that runs at 3ghz or its really fucked up 8core mobile cpu.

The PS4 will probably be a bit faster due to the DDR 5 ram at the very least, but given devs will cross develop, I can't see the real world difference being that great in terms of graphics between the two.

IMO both consoles are lacking power when you consider they will be around until 2020 at the very least.

no more push for the graphics is what i understood, if i was them i would have delyaed until at least 2015, no one needs marginal improvement, i think current consoles could have lived for 2 more years. given how install bases will shift gradually pushing for that big launch really isnt that big of a deal. 1million people vs 70 million people install base on each console. that would take until at lest 2015, they should stop advertising launch events as some kind of big deal as reality is launch is not really that important when u account for tiny install base and just a few dozen games, remember when ps3 was release it was just such a bag of hurt with that pricetag and 70 dollar games of which only a couple was worth playing. i think they should just ditch launch events and conentrate on gradual shifts and focus on game titles and features rather than a box that changes every 7 years. launch is really not that important imho. might as well see the new consoles flop and then everyone feels jaded cause they think they were tricked into byuing a failed product.

my ps3 i bought in 2008 died in 2011 and i barely even used it, even my laptop is still working after full on use. consoles really are just yet another piece of equipment that fails. 360 and ps3 both fail cause they still rely on disc based media, if you play disc based games regularly i am pretty sure that thing would fail within 2 years of moderate use regardless of red rings of death or ylod on ps3. both consoles really suck.

I won't be buying this. Furthermore, it is my hope that they fail miserably.

Technologically it has been obsolete since commander keen. Consoles will stay because there are tons of ppl unable to operate PC.
