1) the fact that we kind of "know" that evil just fucks with cypher there

and

2) the fact that the ones who can punish evil (league admins) don't have hard evidence for this.

that's a huge difference. sure, what evil does is a dick move. all we can do is pointing that out - 125fps doesn't have much in hand for punishing. the moment we pass our concerns to the admins is the moment where the system fails, kinda.

There might be a bit of a solution to the problem - in order to disincentivize a player from calling a timeout and throwing his opponent of his game, the admins could state upfront that whenever a player calls a timeout, the spawntimes of all the items picked up by the other player in the latest rotation are going to be revealed to that other player. This way a player will have to weigh in his head if it's really worth it to call a timeout. It would even be massively counterproductive to timeout with that system in place, since, and I'll use todays example from aerowalk to prove my point, cypher wouldn't have to get stressed about forgetting item times and would have plenty of time to play out the next passage of play in his head multiple times.

This system would have to be supplanted by admins quickly calling a timeout if a player starts lagging. In this case, obviously no spawntimes should be revealed.

There might be some unintended consequences and ways to abuse that, since I haven't thought about it deeply enough to make sure there aren't any but it's a start.

I don't think it's the item timings that is the biggest problem here but intentionall killing of the opponent's momentum. you can't fix that with revealing item timings after a timeout.

There should just be no player timeouts imo, admin should call timeout if a players connection dies is a needed concession as playing online.

I kinda agree. I understand the need for a timeout because shit happens, but a map takes only 10 minutes and if taking the timeouts away would ensure a better, more fair competition imho it's the price worth paying.

I think it's reasonable to say that doing a 10 second pause when being 0:2 behind in a bo5 and having just lost multiple frags in the third map is an entirely different thing than doing a 60-second pause when leading 3:0 in a bo7 and when the enemy just got his first chance to actually get in the game.
But should we treat the two timeouts differently because of that? Hard question.

Lots of sports have timeouts and coaches use them all the time to try and kill "momentum".

See basketball and American football for 2 examples. Its completely normal. Its strategic and players should be mentally strong enough to get through it.

I think the main reason why it screwed up Cyphers game (if the time-out was the reason) is because using time-outs for breaking someone's momentum is against the rules in the 125fps league. And because Evil can get away with it, that at least added to the mind games that Cypher hates.

Not a good comparison, you can't call timeouts in the middle of plays in other sports.

Sure you can argue that the other player just needs to deal with it, but it doesn't make it any less bullshit. Imagine if everyone starts timing out during every comeback, quake doesn't need that.

In basketball you can call a timeout at any time if your team is in possession of the ball. Your teammate could literally be about the dunk the ball and you could call a timeout. Whether or not the refs grant the timeout is another discussion and could potentially be something relevant to quake.

In football it is true you can't call a timeout during a play, but lots of coaches wait until the split second before the snap of a field goal attempt to "ice" the kicker as they call it. The intent of this is clear, its not like they are trying to hide the fact that they are trying to get into the kicker's head.

In case of eg. basketball or volleyball there are natural pauses and restarts during the game (after ball going out of field or, in case of volleyball - virtually after every point). That's when a timeout can happen. You can't pause during an offensive play in soccer. The closest example you could find in Quake would be between maps.

I think it is pretty low if evil uses these, especially if he is 2 maps up already anyway, but since you can't do a lot about it I think cypher should learn to handle these better. If this happens vs rapha for example there would be no problem.

So let's see how this went. Cypher was playing flawlessly for ~5 minutes straight, then evil called a 60-second timeout, and 15 seconds later cypher made a huge mistake that cost him the map.

As others have mentioned, we can't know for sure that Evil's phone didn't ring at that exact moment. However, regardless of whether or not Evil intended to throw off Cypher with the pause (and I think we can take into account last month's final, where Cypher's comments when raging in chat were specifically pause-related), the claim that this kind of pause kills momentum and can make players forget item times is reasonable.

So, if we work off that assumption, we must then ask the question: if a pause can give you an advantage in a game, is it okay to use it for that purpose?

In my opinion, no. Primarily because the pause isn't a duel gameplay mechanic. It's part of the metagame, and I think using outside factors to influence the outcome of a game can skew a competition, giving an outside advantage to a worse player and allowing them to win. I'm not saying that this is the case here, but it makes it so that player performance and player placement aren't as closely correlated, introducing more random bullshit into competition. This is my basic belief; others will say that any tactic that can be used to win is valid.

I think 125 FPS rules need a change. No more player timeouts, admin only timeouts for obvious technical issues: 999, or player not moving / mouse not moving for at least e.g. 10 sec. The actual amount of time for calling a timeout needs to be calibrated so that it would be an obvious disadvantage for a player to "fake" the tech issue to get a timeout - 10 secs allows your opponent to take a few items and kill you, even get a spawnfrag on some maps. It's a tournament, when you press that F3 button, it should mean "I'm ready to play the next map until completion", not "I'm ready to play until my phone rings". If it's a genuine emergency, like a fire - the player probably won't care about the tournament, that's a forfeit anyway. If it's some bullshit that can be resolved in 1 minute - then it's probably not worth interrupting the game for, given the impact the pause can have.

The 10 second rule sounds very intriguing. It could be applied before or after the timeout, and if it's not met you take a "3 frags to your opponent" penalty after the game for example. Or ID could just add a competitive version of timeout (likelihood of happening: not so high).

It's a necessary evil. Pausing the game gives both players the advantage of giving a situation extra thought. If you're that paranoid about forgetting stuff you should be writing down the info (like item times, positioning) so you can remember.

I really dont wanna see a timeout everytime a player is about to comeback. The difference between quake and other sports like basketball is that there are no breaks supposed to be happening during the game, quake is about nonstop action.

regarding trashtalk after game: it has no influence on the outcome therefore its in most cases irrelevant.

I don't see any problems about that. Pause lets you rethink,calmdown, maybe retime items. I have done some pauses before in important matches. Like I was 1-2 frag in a lead and I lost control. Hands are shaking, head are not working. So 1-2 minutes pause is very good.

I don't get the problem either. The sports analogy is the best one, you're permitted a limited number of timeouts and they are there to let you refocus yourself, rethink strategy, disrupt opponents rythym etc. It's totally normal and works exactly the same way in Quake. It just needs a proper set of rules to make sure it's never taken to absurd levels such as timeouts after every battle.

Your own example is a perfect one, you used the timeout intelligently rather than continue to play on in a state where you would surely have thrown the game away. This is no different to lets say a timeout in a basketball game, where the opponent has made a 9-0 + run to make it a one possession game late in the 4th. You could continue to play and just watch their momentum carry them to victory, or you could timeout, rethink what you're doing and try to kill some of their momentum.

If people want to make an argument for absolutely no timeouts *under any circumstances* I'd be fine with that, but there's no inbetween as far as I'm concerned. It's either unrestricted usage of a limited number of timeouts, or absolutely zero timeouts whatsoever.

Though in basketball you're not stuck in the air while doing a bridge2rail jump when your oponent calls a timeout. Thats the problem of timeout in quake, it doesn't just remove your mental momentum, but also the 'physical' one, sometimes resulting in failed movement or aiming upon the timein.

Not only this, but also the problem of remembering information thats hard to remember when the game isn't flowing is something that makes timeouts a bit unfair and/or annoying in quake.

I agree it creates problems in Quake that real sports don't suffer from as much, although continuing with Basketball comparisons, Basketball allows timeouts to be called while a player is about to concede a jump ball which could turnover possession. That would be kind of similar to calling a timeout in Quake mid-jump or similar situations.

As I said previously anyway, I'd rather only see two ways timeouts can be used, that is either freely or not at all. If you start putting in things like "you can call a timeout in extreme circumstances", you're only inviting people to lie to force a timeout. My preference would probably be no timeouts at all, but all the while the ability is there I think people should use them tactically.

A timeout interupts the normal flow of playing quake, making me personally forget a lot of information that usually just sticks to the back of my mind, such as weaker item respawn times, enemy stack and guns, his position and his plan. I try to write as much of it down in the console when my oponent times out, but still it's anoying and definitely hindering my game, as everything feels unnatural upon the timein.

Wether tactical timeouts are unsportsmanlike is hard for me to form my opinion. It definitely shouldnt happen more than once per map.

There's one main and only one purpose of any game and tournament, ultimately, it is to decide a winner and not everyone can be. The game doesn't recognize of what's considered cheap, low and so on in terms of game-play. It abides to a certain rule-set, starting from the basic physics to the tournament rules themselves, and I think any means to achieve victory by using all and any possible strategies, methods within these rules are justified.

Quite frankly, I had mixed feelings when that pause hit at first, but more than not I was impressed. That's insult to injury, that's like a slap in the face without using your hands, like a sword long enough to reach his opponent through time in the next cup...

Pretty sure twitch streams have like a 30 sec delay anyway so it would be useless to do that. It would however be possible for a 125fps participant to have a second pc, logged in to the ql account of another participant, and join the server in spec with show item timers

It wouldn't work with simply a fake account since the server admin wilmost likely wont allow unknown players in their server where an official game is going to be played, however, 125fps participants are always allowed to spec any match of the 125fps leaugue.

This would actually give a pretty big advantage to the cheater, as theynow have exact timing on up to 4 items depending on the map, and item delaying cant fool them anymore.

The solution would be to not allow any specs in the server except well known streamers. Doubt people will do anything about it, also I'm not saying this definitely happens, but it's not that unlikely that it does.

I think twitch stream delay is normally around 5-10 seconds unless streamers are adding more delay?

Evil has been doing this for over two years (both online and offline) and its an obvious power play.

Play just one tournament game in duel and you will see how much can a single timeout affect your game plan, momentum and get you completely out of The Zone. If youre still not convinced, just imagine every player calling a timeout whenever he feels the momentum is shifting. Yeah, enjoy your Quake.

More so, these are competitive games, not your random pub matches. When you press your ready bind, youre confirming that youre ready for the next 10 minutes and possible overtimes. If you need to make a call or clear your mousepad or take a piss, well, theres a break after each match.

The solution is simple - only an Admin should be able to pause the game, take away the option from players. Players could request a timeout by typing Timeout (/say timeout), so theyre both equally ready for the game to be stopped by the admin and thus retain their focus hopefully.
Or just get rid of timeouts in competetive duel completely, at least online.

Cypher still had full controll, still got the items and still made frags after the timeout...
Cypher did not lose control until he botched his own rocket jump.

The sport analogy is terrible, in duel sports or 1V1 sports you can't call a timeout like that, only the referee can. Yo i'm getting submitted in mma let's call a time out! Damn i'm gonna get knocked down in that boxing final better call a timeout!

Agreed, fighting games are a better example, I wish people would quit using Basketball time-outs as an analogy.

Lamz Question and K1llmaster used literally 3 timeouts every single map. There are plenty of other examples, Av3k at ESWC 2007 in the grand final against Cooller.

It's been abused many, many times, and this is just the latest example.

Tennis lets you call medical timeouts and take bathroom breaks, guess what happens there, they lie to make use of those breaks. Seen plenty of MMA fights where someone claims they've been low-blowed when in reality they haven't, but they sure as hell get a break from it.

In table tennis every player can call a 60 second tactical timeout once per match. As in quake, professional table tennis players use it to destroy their opponent's momentum or to regain their own composure. It is very rare not to see it used in important and/or close matches.

However, obviously, it is only possible to call it between rallies, not during one. I think the way timeouts can be called in quake would be comparable to calling a timeout in table tennis during a rally, with the ball in mid-air. And this, quite naturally, isn't and shouldn't be legal because it alters the players' actions that are *currently* happening.

I think it's quite pathetic that we apparently can't expect people to not get disrupted for a whole 10 minutes. Think about that.
If you have a phone, TURN IT OFF. You're not available. Imagine Federer interrupting a match during a game (the 0-15-30-40 bits) because his phone rang. Just no.
If you can't contain bodily fluids inside you for 10 minutes, you belong in a hospital, not in front of a screen.
Only exception is lags, but then the server should be in charge of interrupting the match automatically, not the players.

Well, you could also just take LoL or Dota2 to compare with. People there are supposed to have 25-45 minutes average time to not get interrupted...and it kinda works 99/100 games where nobody goes afk or whatever.
I call bs on those quake timeouts and theyre nothing but tactical stuff. noone can tell me he cant even play 10 minutes straight without any interruptions..

Its a tournament therefore there should be rules. it is your responsibility as a player to make sure you can play properly. that means turn the phone off or dont answer it. its just a game but money is involved so i can demand a certain professionality. also i think there should be regulations for timeouts e.g. 3 timeouts per person a 30 seconds. if you have used them up anything after that is your problem. IMO

Time outs fuck shit up, they fuck up your flow, your timing and your general awareness of what your enemy is doing.

Admins should have the ability to pause the match, not players. You don't see professional footballers pause a match because of a telephone call do you? Timeouts are about as painful as +back players.

Admins of cups and/or leagues need to sort their shit out.

Maybe they should impose a rule that you can only call a timeout when your dead and waiting to respawn. This would have next to no effect on the momentum of the game.

Except, you know, for when it has an effect because you couldn't timeout and now there's an afk player.
