Which LED model? CRTs have 0 input lag.

I had the same CRT, and I eventually sold it and got a 144hz asus vg248qe monitor. The CRT is awesome, but the 144hz is better. Quake performance is about the same, and it's far better for other games and applications.

I went from a small 85hz CRT to a 120hz acer w too much input lag to a vg248qe. The Asus isn't bad but I feel like I never recovered the aim I had with the CRT, and playing on a CRT just feels nicer to me. But as you say the Asus is nicer for about everything else

Yeah my relative has it laying around and he doesn't use it so he's willing to give it me for free. It's not like anybody else than some afps games care about

ive got a 22" 160hz crt and a 24" 144hz benq. I use the crt as my monitor for games still. The benq is good, but the crt is a bit better.

1024x768. mines capped by the firmware at 160hz though. i think yours can do 170hz at that res. you can get higher refresh rates at lower resolutions on your monitor though. i think it does 200hz at 800x600.

just get the CRT. 160hz is god-like and 0 input lag.

most 144hz lcd are good nowadays i mean they are good for fast game like quake, but imho 160hz CRT is still better than 144hz lcd.

i agree tho that a large LCD (24"+) is very comfortable for web browsing and watching movies etc.

Crt have no motion blur. They are amazing for fps games. If you are going to get a lcd I would recommend one with g-sync. Seriously go for the crt. If you don't plan to play any fps games just get a oled monitor. That is not a mistake I did mean to type oled.

Eh, I say get the 144Hz with the least input lag, which apparently is the AOC G2460PQU, which has 16 ms of "absolute input lag".

Get the CRT and use the money to buy yourself a nice 16:10 IPS panel for surfing and movies instead.

For gaming a CRT is probably still better than the best gaming TFTs. I mean there are some drawbacks of course, like having to play on lower resolutions if you want high refresh rates, which might even be a pro instead of a con because you get more fps in graphic intensive games but don't get the totally blurred TFT image caused by interpolating to a non-native resolution. On the other hand having the same resolution in-game and on the desktop is better which is easier done with a 144Hz TFT than with a CRT (because usually you play on the TFTs native resolution anyway). If you want to game on the CRT with high refresh rates and still use it for surfing etc. you don't want to use something like 1024x768 on the desktop. That means you will change resolutions all the time. If you don't play games in windowed mode or don't change the resolution manually before you start your game, you will change resolution whenever you alt-tab which takes some time and the monitor goes *click* *clack* every time.

They also take a lot of space and some can't be used on $20 IKEA desks because they can be heavy as fuck. You need a solid desk.

Electricity cost might be a concern. Quite a few are listed as 160W compared to something like 40W of a TFT.

One more con is geometry. It can be hard to get the geometry right and will never be perfect. Geometry also changes depending on how warmed up the monitor is. Same goes for colors etc. If you cold start the monitor, the colors and geometry might be off until it's warmed up properly, which can take a good 20-30 minutes.

Sharpness can be another issue for some people. CRTs aren't as sharp as TFTs. That's why font anti-aliasing was invented which is not really needed on a CRT.

Then there is a plethora of calibration settings you might have to mess with if something is off. Geometry, colors, black levels, convergence etc. The lifetime of the tube and electronics is limited and the image usually gets worse over time which you have to correct.

Of course you don't have motion blur like on a TFT but what people tend to forget is that the phosphor in the tube is kinda sluggish. That means moving something bright on a dark background will leave a short trail of phosphor after-glow. I heard this will get worse the older the tube. It's not an issue if the game you play is bright enough in general but in quake live a dark black and white post-processing config would make this very obvious I think.

tl;dr: Get the CRT for gaming and a good IPS panel TFT for surfing and movies but be prepared for having to fiddle with the CRTs settings.

The weight of the FW900 certainly is scary for someone like me haha but the Samsung Syncmaster 997MB is at 22kg, that's not too bad even for a weak basement dweller. And for free? Fuck yes I wouldn't pass on that if it's in good condition and I had room for a LCD next to it.

I would go with the lcd for sure and for many obvious reasons. If you only play for 24/7 and only quake - sure, go for the crt. Otherwise only fanatics like us here will prefer it over 24 inch 144Hz led lcd.

Add: oh, and for the eye part - the LCD is tons better than CRT for your eyes. Cheers! ;)

If you end up getting a CRT and you also want a high res besides high refresh rate, consider using an interlaced display mode.

On a 121kHz (horiz scan rate) monitor (like my Compaq P1210), you could get these, for example:

1600 x 1200i @ 160 hz
2048 x 1536i @ 144 hz

Possibly expect some tweaking though... I got the thing rolling using the following two utilities. (I have Nvidia Optimus, that doesn't have custom resolution option in the driver, which seriously complicated things):

Also, there might be a problem with Quake Live with these interlaced modes... I gave a brief try, but couldn't get it to work. Only a part of the viewport was shown. I have been playing mostly only UT2004, where these modes work OK, so I don't really know if QL will actually work or not.

Somewhat, but so do low resolutions. Some games fail at scaling hud elements for example and it's nice to have the options of "I can't see shit because hud elements and text too big" and "I can't see shit because interlaced" :>

OK, I tried setting up 1600 x 1200i @ 120hz using 9600GT drivers on Win XP, using CVT timing standard (I don't know what it means, because it was one of timing standards available to use with interlacing).
I created custom resolution, it's working on 120hz but it's REALLY REALLY stretched out, only half of desktop is displayed. I tried repositioning image via CRT buttons but it didn't work. Do you know what should I do?
EDIT: Finally got it working by copying parameters from CRU to Nvidia custom resolution settings. 1600x1200i @ 120hz is sweet! This is one of best things I discovered since I have my CRT. Works with no problems in ET and RtCW (q3 engine based games).

I can add interlaced resolutions via nvidia control panel and when pressing "test" it's working and everything. Then when I accept that resolution, it only shows up in the "Customize" window, not in the main list, nor in windows. Resolutions added with CRU don't show up anywhere either (I did restart.exe).

Not quite on topic but I bought a samsung 120hz 22" (2233r?) used it for 6 months then sold it and bought a high end 22" Mitsubishi CRT (diamond plus 230 sb) for £30 and much prefer it and still use it today.

However, my brother has a 144hz, not sure if it's Benq or something else. Anyway, it's very impressive performance wise. I'd probably go with the 144hz over my CRT if money was no object.

My Sony G520 is dying, I can barely see anything until it warms up and one of the colors goes off randomly. I'm gonna have to get something else and see if I can solder a new capacitor or something then maybe sell it. End of an era for me. I hardly game due to my busy schedule and at this point I rather spend my time on high intensity interval training and table tennis.

So what's the general opinion on buying something like this Crossover 2795 QHD 27" 1440p 8 bit IPS or shall I go the 144hz TN route? Keep in mind there is nothing local to me that I can try so my hate for TN at the moment is based on expensive laptops and brand new 2 digits cheap monitors at the office, that when you shift your head 1cm the colors change and especially the blackness. Horrible to watch something like a dark scene, or play a game in the shadows.
Do expensive TN monitors suffer from this? Also would I really miss the 120hz when I'm paint.netting and in general fucking around windows? I played the car park level in Max Payne on my CRT, first I did it in 160hz then I did it in 60hz. In all honesty I was alright with my aim, experimenting different type of shots on stationary and moving targets and just repeating over and over. Yes obviously it was harder to see at 60hz as things were blurry but my shots landed where I wanted them.

Anyways what's the verdict? Should I go cheap, should I go IPS, should I just get a second hand 144hz or old IPS Dell on Ebay? Any advice welcomed

diamondtron/trinitron crt ,lcd sucks cause input lag ,matrix lag and bad colours if tn matrix. but you need got not fucked crt desirable with bnc output(if use bnv->vga cable will be better image trust me). cuz if crt too used can be bad focus ,poor colours and other crap.sometimes possible adjust focus on fbt regulators but anyway adjusting focus its hard shit and better buy just not fucked crt.

As for anyone reading this topic in order to decide whether or not to get a crt here are my thoughts:

I have an ibm p275 (130khz 21" crt), and I can tell you that finding a suitable vga cable for high refresh rates will be a nightmare... going forward the only benefit of a crt panel is no motion blur with 0.01-2ms total input lag which sounds good and all, but here are the cons:
Everything, except a few oldschool competitive fps titles like quake and cs will look and feel way better on a widescreen panel as compared to a 4:3 crt with less than desirable geometry. Playing bf3 or even csgo (for me) at 4:3 feels cramped with not enough horizontal screen estate to fill my vision... moving along: the sharpness you lose by using a crt can be really annoying in both games and desktop work... you also lose more and more brightness and luminance variation across the screen as you go higher in resolutions and refresh rates (a light open area will be less distinguishable from a dark corner in csgo for example) simply put a 144hz 24" tn will be a pleasure to use compared to a crt in every situation, except low res. competitive gameplay with games like quake and cs 1.6/source (I'd rather use a higher res for more detail in csgo)

Tl;dr: there's no harm in trying a crt for free if you haven't done so before, but I'd only use it as a secondary screen for oldschool fast paced fps games, as it's only relevant advantage compared to 144hz lcds (0 motion blur with the lowest input lag possible) will only overshadow it's massive disadvantages in those kind of games... (for me at least)

I won't be using the crt, because I have no space for it and I should sit very near it which I don't like. If somebody wants to buy it, msg me and come to get it from Turku.
