We had them figured out -- they were fully physically based, normal mapped materials. This is the same top of the line texture systems that all recent AAA games are using. Then we decided to get rid of them.

We keep a fast pace with updates. It's been a year since kickstarter and we've made huge improvements on the code side -- more editor features, more rendering features, amazing netcode, more modes, etc etc.

But it was going to be impossible for art to keep the same pace. Creating high poly assets, uving, baking normal maps, creating low poly assets to put those normal maps on and then creating all the hand painted albedo, spec, metal etc textures.. It's a huge amount of work per asset.

Those assets are also often single use. If you look at something like overwatch, it looks amazing but a huge amount of its assets are created to spec for that map only, which is extremely limiting for community mappers.

So, now we go texture free and low poly. We can smash out themes in months instead of years. Community mappers can scale and recolor assets to fit their own maps. We can run on a broader range of hardware. We can do cooler shit with water and cloth and destruction one day. Everything is HUGELY flexible now and done in a style that doesn't require community mappers to have been environment artists for 10 years.

We are not even a little bit embarrassed about the new art style -- it was easily the best move for development, the best move for the scene and over time will allow us to create a lot of unique features and visuals for Reflex.

Hi. I think if your team could present some ways in which your netcode is superior to quakeworld, that would help smooth over some negative perceptions people have about Reflex. Maybe this is a difficult task, or a distraction itself, but this is the market you're in and it's something at least on my mind.

Relfex is awesome. It's beautiful (even without textures), and the netcode works really well (I think it works much better than Quake in high pings, but worse with low - sub 30ms ones -, but still nothing deal-breaker there).
There is only one problem here, Quake is even more awesome. I think it's really unfair to compare Reflex in its early development stage to the mighty and super-polished Quake.
Most of us here literally grew old playing Quake, and the fact that some 0.x version of a "new" arena shooter can feel good for us is already a miracle on its own. Full respect to the devs imho.

My personal wish would be to have a vq3-ish movement for the CTF lovers like me, but maybe a mod will make it possible one day.

Why are our friends gonna play this game? That's what it comes down to. Sure we can wait for Reflex to be 1.0 to answer that question. But people need convincing some way or other to play a game. Some factor will drive their interest. And superior netcode is a great way to bring together a shattered playerbase.

I recall seeing concept art with textures and wondered what ever happened to that, being at the point where reflex news and updates are happening constantly and showmatches are being played and whatnot. And why would I even try to "shitpost" a game, the genre of which is universally played picmip'd anyway? It wouldn't even make sense, unless I was a CoD kid, in which case I wouldn't even be on ESR in the first place.

Toxikk is really pretty but has lower player counts than we do. Minecraft is fuckugly but has more players than we ever will.

Unfortunately it's never as simple as "best looking games get the most players" or "best gameplay gets the most players". There's probably even plenty of indie games out there that look good and play well and have 5 sales.

minecraft is the exception, it's multiplayer legos, you can make high def legos but that just doesn't add anything to the game. However an FPS game is all about aiming and shooting at things, so you have to look around more, you got to enjoy the scenery.

The only thing I can think of is to make the player models UBER high quality. Like super fucking sick looking with intense death and blood animations. So it becomes a feature when you have the cell shaded shit and then the gorey looking effects for the enemies exploding.

That would be interesting.

The main idea is to attract people and then keep them. Attracting them is the graphics, keeping them is the gameplay.

The reason why minecraft worked is everyone loves legos. Mutiplayer legos is just a completely awesome idea. No need to attract anyone with graphics.

I believe you are speaking from your own experience and it has little to do with reality. Everyday I witness a couple instances of full ffa servers with new players who have barely even touched quake. They seem to enjoy playing each other and it's refreshing to see fresh meat have at it. I and many other old school players stay out of their way for the most part. We like to encourage them to study movement and we admit to them that we work on movement still even after 18 years of playing. They seem to be genuinely excited about this game.

It's not about graphics at all, its all about the way the game is presented. Just finding the right caster and a good spec hud can make a world of difference. I'm sure the caster is great guy and everything, but he casted it like it was a slow and tedious game of golf. There's a lot you can criticise the stream for but graphics? come on now..

They mixed soccer with racing, both hugely popular sports, put them together in the right way and you have a winning combination, why the fuck didn't I think of that? its actually a pretty good cpm replacement, the only things I dont like at the moment:

1) the slow ass spam heavy rockets, it does not have the same magical feeling as cpm or even more basic vq3/ql rockets. It sort of feels like the quake 4 rocket, which I never liked. Rockets are probably the single biggest reason I like quake in first place and makes me not like reflex

2) lack of clipping, bumping constantly into edges of walls

3) enemy model non-intuitive leg movement in reflex, this is something that was perfected in quake 3 and I feel every fps game ever made should just plain simple copy.

If i'am not wrong ,rockets are same speed as cpm had , and faster then QL, actually these are most responsive rockets from all quakes, in game they feels great. Wall clipping , model animation,ragdoll, visibility, force model colors e.t.c coming in next patches/patch...

I actually dislike it because without it you need to move more accurately around corners which means you can't go that agressive anymore. It was cool for defrag tho.

It's the opposite. The better your movement, the more you're strafing as tightly around corners as possible. It's not just a simple freebie where you run into a wall and magically clip through it, there's a bit of technique to it. That should be obvious given that those who abuse clipping the most are those who know how to move better.

Without clipping, there's less incentive to make corners as tight as possible.

to me is not a skill-exploit such as the pesky cpm techniques, it's simply a exploit. There's no need to add more advantages to the movement in this game, if you wanna go around a corner don't hit the wall... lol, why does it have to be 1:1 cpm?

It doesn't have to be 1:1 cpm. Clipping is a Quake 3 thing, not just CPM.

And it keeps the game fast. Getting good at wallclipping is a skill, not an exploit. If you're bad at it, you'll only end up slowing or stopping yourself. In fact, when I see players of various movement skills moving around maps, one way to distinguish better movement is consistent wallclipping.

One example is picking up mega on ztn (vq3/ql) by clipping a bit. It's all these little nuances that adds depth. No wallclipping is absence, not presence, of movement depth.

I will just say, the event was pretty good, CTF looked good on Reflex but the casters were pretty boring or bad or however you want to put it. Wasnt interesting from that stand point.

Reflex needs to come out of the gate quick. I would do these things.

1) Mapping competition for all its modes EVERY SINGLE MONTH.

The best map gets featured on the website and has a tournament played on it exclusively (how we do it for quake maps)

The map maker gets credit and $50

2) Defrag maps that are completely fucking ridiculous, like Final Torture. Whoever can defeat the map gets recogized and $50. You must complete it in 1 full try, while having a demo and no cheating.

3)IDEA. What happens if you can offer graphics as prizes? Like the whole game itself can be customized. Every texture on every map can be bare or filled up. You can have 1 player looking at a complete reflex game where the walls are all steam punk textures, while the other player looks at the game and it's all futuristic shit. And even better another looks at the graphics and it's all brownish like quake 1 style. Weapons would still shoot the same shit but would look different depending on your style of graphics.

And better yet, how about you unlock all these textures and graphics WHILE PLAYING THE GAME. Now you don't have to worry about appealing to everyone, those who play the game can customize HOW they view the world and how it plays.

The two comments above seem to represent a perspective that has not actively involved themselves in the game enough to provide a proper summation of the game.

In short, they are lazy and are full of it.

I don't even own this game so I can't play it, but I played cpm when it was alive and well. So I can tell what is gonna happen to it.

I'll only play reflex if it has a ton of people. If not I won't even bother. It isn't like quake to me, the duel aspect is boring as fuck to play and spec. I'm hoping ctf/ca and defrag are good. And hopefully they implement the team mode vs monsters/zombies with floors idea

Ql might have a a bit more population so if that's what you're into, more power to you. I was very dissapointed with q3a but I eventually learned to enjoy it. Still, it's not the quake I fell in love with and I'm not going to continue playing it even for another minute. Ql wasn't even an improvement really, it was shallow. Reflex gives us maps too, and they can be as grand or as plain as the map maker wishes those maps to be. Again, for alpha it's impressive.

It was fantastic. Quakelive is the only quake that I continue to play after the population has died down because it's all I have now in terms of a fun arena shooter.

Pardon me good sirs but IMO reflex fans thought process warrant some questioning because their reasons for supporting reflex can be baffling to outsiders.

Why support reflex when there are similar games like cpma warsow and pql? Where is the support for cpma and warsow that were made with no funding and are free? Hard to find clear reasons for pushing reflex except that it's newer than those games.

So some guys come along with the idea of re-creating an unpopular obsolete game, but somehow make it worse, for example the item timers... For some reason Reflex is getting a lot of support and coverage, instead of just dying, which would have it's merits. One of which would be punishing potential developers for bad or unoriginal ideas.

These guys have seen what happened with nexuiz, xonotic, warsow, alien arena, world of padman, open arena.. Making a copy of quake with different textures and slightly different guns does not work.

Whether they did this knowingly or not, they have exploited enthusiasts for this type of game, but have delivered a shoddy unfinished product, all while making you pay for the privilege of being a beta tester.

This is something that I've been noticing for a while in the quake community.

People want a new game that plays and looks exactly like quake, but as soon as it tries to do so it gets shunned because it's a copy.

Then devs implement something new and people complain that it's not an exact copy of quake.


It's confusing, but you bring some good points to the table nonetheless.

Well to be fair the new point I criticized was the item timers which 99% people on this site would agree is detrimental to the game.

I don't believe there is anything confusing or conflicting about wanting a great sequel to quake. In general a sequel improves upon the prequel, has its own innovations, and yet remains true to the core concepts of the predecessor,

I suppose it is still too early to tell (although it feels like reflex has been around for ages) whether reflex is the CSGO of cpma, or if it will fall in with other arena shooters like toxikk and wickland.

About a year ago, we released on Early Access -- a platform that is, by definition, for unfinished products. We're not "making" people pay to be beta testers, they choose to play a game that is under heavy development. There's probably been 10,000+ hours of Reflex played to date and I doubt any players have lost any sleep thinking about how their fun offends you because the game isn't finished -- and we've never, EVER implied that the game was finished. We even warned people running comps that the game wasn't ready for it yet.

In the last year, we've added more game modes, more editor features, more art, basic server side replays and replay editing, incredible netcode, a hugely powerful, scriptable UI system, the community has created over 250 maps, we've optimised the game to run on wider and wider varieties of hardware and literally thousands of smaller tweaks and features.

The accusation that we've somehow wronged or mislead the community is offensively stupid.

So do your customers who are testing/playing this incomplete product get compensation for it? For example receiving the game for free?

To exploit does not mean to mislead or even to wrong. It is to utilize a resource selfishly, sort of with the focus given to practical outputs than other harder to quantify properties. In my mind selling an unpolished, no where near finished product is exploiting fans.

You seem to think that players are too stupid to make their own informed decisions -- like we put out a game and they just throw their money at us because they don't know better. At worst, the relationship is mutually beneficial.

You also seem to believe that being able to play and enjoy a game is worthless and they should get money and free stuff because once upon a time they submitted a duplicate report for a known bug. What our players do and what a proper QA department would do are extremely different things.

Our players jump in and have fun and play games and there is a (very) small percentage who will send me a message or post in the forum if they find a bug, which I then have to figure out the proper steps to reproduce.

Someone in a QA department spends 8 hours a day tediously testing the same things over and over again -- they're not expected to have fun. They have giant lists of things to test, then fill out detailed bug reports and then when it's fixed, they get to go through the giant lists again. If everything seems to work, they get to move on to the next hardware configuration and test on that. Basically, what testing departments do is you know.. actual work.

I know of absolutely no Reflex players who feel playing the game is a chore, but still put 8 hours a day into it for "testing". If anyone is unhappy with the current state of the game, they can get a refund through Steam.

For me personally it's very simple: I really enjoyed playing CPM, but I had to compete with 15 years of aim and movement AND 15 years of map knowledge. Then Reflex comes along, a game that's practically CPM with an absolutely great map editor, new maps are appearing almost every day and suddenly I find myself getting more competitive games with people that used to destroy me without breaking a sweat. For an example, when I play the average CPM vet on cpm22, it's usually somewhere around 25 - 0 in his favour, when I play them on thct7 I'm pretty confident I can take a map once in awhile. You have a reasonable shot to get decent at Reflex without going nolife for a year or two, which is kinda what you had to do to get good at CPM. Games are more fun when you're not getting your booty wrecked.

In general, Reflex is much more accessible than CPM for new players, from the fact that you don't have to scour the internet to even install it to not having to join an even harder to find IRC channel to get games. I want to support that. That's why I play Reflex.

Also, I enjoy playing it.

shame, i was really hoping for a more dynamic CTF with runes and a hook or maybe some translocator mechanic, as opposed to the dry q3 style CTF, which i always found to be kinda dull to play even with friends on lan.

I can live without hook rune ctf, I just don't understand why it disappeared from existence. I always blamed q3a and it's a major part of my frustration with q3a. Ql brought runes back then trashed em. Also, I want my throwing grenades back Ffs.

In order to understand why the grappling hook disappeared from CTF, you have to understand the maps and the overall game design as a whole have to take into account the addition of a grappling hook into the gameplay. Otherwise, a grappling hook is not worth adding into any game out there, no matter the genre even.

In Q2 the maps were huge (several times larger than in Q3) and also were designed in such a way that team-based gameplay was of the essence, whereas in QL/Reflex/etc. you can make a cap or a quad pick happen with only one rocket jump. since one player's movement matters way too much. That's not CTF, which is a team game, but post-2000 Quake-only players don't get it and never will until they step out of Q3.

I could go on and on about this, but in the end without making the game as a whole to function with a grappling hook, then the grappling hook will indeed work as a (worthless) gimmick in a game in which it doesn't really work.

The Q2 CTF-like gameplay is something that most likely will never be found in Quake again, or in the Quake clones (Reflex, Warsow, etc. etc.). The current devs either don't understand it (or didn't experience it in Quake or other games), or those that do appreciate it still for some reason couldn't make it a reality (Syncerror, with the unfinished Delta CTF project of his, which was awesome BTW. Major props).

So that's why the grappling hook is out from current Quake and its clones ...yet Overwatch (the soon to become the biggest Arena FPS of all time) embraces it and uses the hook as one of the key elements to advertise the game. In other words, the reason that happens is that they designed the very game as a whole to work with that aspect, instead of just adding stuff for the sake of pleasing people.

The game must be consistent. I cannot stress this enough. For example (or rather as I side note), the same can be said about some aspects of CPM that didn't make it into Reflex, such as the 'clipping bug' and the lack of precise timers. Those things made CPM be a consistent game, as those did make the action be faster and the gameplay be more aggressive, but the removal of those aspects in Reflex (the CPM copycat -- lets face it, it is) does hurt the gameplay Reflex wants to achieve and also that its followers adore. I think the Reflex devs do not realize this yet, just like they don't realize throwing a grappling hook in with small maps is worthless and never will be 'balanced', but it's true.

I guess I should feel sorry for 'hating' Reflex (i.e. not praising the game), and that I won't be getting a free key for 'hating' the game (#52, no matter that I understand the core of the games that the very CPM copied and that subsequently Reflex tries to copy)?

It's funny to see some people comment about game mechanics even though they have never played the game. Moreover, yes, the game was empty a year a go but right now, you can find a game at any given time whether it's a duel,ffa,atdm or tdm. The community keeps growing and there's a lot more interest than ever before. So if you enjoy a change, try it yourselves.

It's been mentioned that mouse accel might come later. This might be crucial to make it easier for some quakers to get started. I know there is the QL accel driver and I've used it, but its too complicated for most people.

Mouse accel is definitely crucial.
