Me too. I think what annoys a lot of people about fatal1ty is that he doesn't out-aim the opponent but plays sound, doesn't take unnecessary risks, almost always +backs to secure a lead and so on. It must be really frustrating to meet him in a competition, and that's why top players seem to dislike him.

I think most people are more impressed by aim, like when unKind came. Suddenly everyone held him as #1 for all time because it looked so impressive. But I doubt unKind will even be nominated in this competition. Why? Because he hasn't proven himself in as many competitions as fatal1ty, ZeRo4 et al.

I think it takes a lot of balls to go pro, especially when not playing in a great team. Your own quality of play is what decides your income, nothing else. If he'd been a normal player, when arrangers abandoned Q3 duelling, it had been over. But instead he moved his game over to other FPS's. That just shows how solid his game is and how much he wants to stay a pro-gamer.

He sponsors his own e-sports team, arranges tournaments, and yeah, he sells products with fatal1ty logos on'em. The last idea he could've shoved :) but he's putting some money back in the scene. I see him as a great guy, even tho his promoters saying he's "champion of the world waah" will make people hate him.

fatal1ty is the guy who made me stick with Q3 and start duelling, when I could just have played a few more FFA games :) and then switch to the next game that looked good.

I haven't followed UT2k3 so I wouldn't know the difference between the two players there. I'd say Gitzzz' playing style in UT however wasn't quite creative, playing almost solely sniper/mini/pulse shows you can aim well, not that you're the most creative in minds

tbh i liked gitzZz playing style in UT. Especially on deck where he just dominated his opponents. The perfect timing this guy had was just scary on deck.

in ut2k3 he played alot with bio in the beginning :P, that was pretty creative :P

I chose fat because of all his other achievements as a gamer, not how well he actually done. The fact that he has his own product lines, appeared on countless TV shows, even ones almost totally dedicated to him, been able to be at the top in multiple games etc, and yes he spent a lot of time promoting and progressing e-sports.

A very tough call. Fatality won almost everything there was to win in 2000, he’s become very, very popular and used that popularity very well. He’s made FPS gaming a job for himself and I have to say I admire his attitude towards his job (has he ever said no to an interview offer?). On the downside, his status from ‘god’ in 2000 has deteriorated to ‘a very good’ player in 2001, 2002 and 2003 (none of these years he could call successful really).

On the other side there’s GitzZz who has made a huge impact on the whole gaming community – he has made UT a respected game and he’s become a role model for many, many gamers. Talent-wise, I think GitzZz is as good as it gets in gaming (he won every international tournament he entered, including 2 WCG’s and ESWC). He’s also a great person – very modest and he I know beyond any doubt that he would rather lose to a great player than win an easy $20,000.

For that reason, I vote for GitzZz, the better gamer.

Skill-wise I'm on the same page as you. But some of the criticisms about Fat promoting himself are extremely shallow. Yes, Thresh pioneered professional gaming, but it was Fatal1ty that changed the market enough to get himself employed in the sector.

GitzZz is a great gamer, no doubt, but it's Fatal1ty's media flair that has given e-sports the face it now has. Fat is and has been gaming's ambassador to the real world.

He's played CS at an earlier event as well. I don't remember when it was, but I think it was in late 2001. His team placed 6th or something. He also placed really well in the CPL anniversary QW tournament a couple of years ago.

ROFL, yea FOUR lans and when you consider the competition the prague event was hardly on the same scale as winning a CPL. He might not have had the opportunity to attend more LANs but it's difficult to compare a game like Quake 3 where the competition is unbelievable and there are a lot of events to someone who plays UT which has a smaller 1v1 scene and less LANs.

Oh and also clearly GitzZz couldn't go to WCG/ECG for reasons beyond his control but he still didn't attent CXG/CPL when I'm pretty sure SK would have paid his expenses. Whether he went because he didn't feel like playing or w/e is irrelevant, you can't compare someone who has been in 4 events and won them all with someone who has been in like 30 events and won quite a few :)

Well apparently Fat didn't do quite as well as in UT's "smaller" 1v1 scene as he did in Quake 3's "Unbelievable Competition". And you have to remember 2 of Gitz's wins are WCG so it's like those are "easy" wins.

Don't start the q3>ut bs. UT never had a smaller 1on1 scene than q3. The top50 1on1 UT players were equivalent to the top50 q3'ers, each in their scene. Less LANs you say ? Ignorant. In germany and holland there were LANs top players and clans attended atleast every other weekend, hence especially ocrana's amazingly long LAN tournament record. Most top UT players played only on LAN. Why ? Because they didn't have to play online when there were lan events everywhere, more effective practise.

If you are implying like GitzZz was the only great player because nobody else really played, let me tell you this, just a small example. Correct me if I'm wrong anyone, but in a qualifier a great player -br3z- did 100% accuracy with sniper. ALL DAMN SHOTS. And still he LOST the game. That's fucking amazing if you ask me, also considering the high ROF and the hitboxes being screwed up. Ever heard of a q3 player that hit 100% rail in an important game under pressure?

Oh and yea, AvP had damn fierce competition, I bet the whole fucking CPL were attending.

Yes, the competition in Q3 was so unbelieveable, that the god of gods in Q3 got beaten by players who came from UT how many times? Six. And those UT players won the events the Q3 god could not win.

As it was already mentioned, Gitzzz dominated UT since ut1 and I guess he'll be dominating in UT2k4 while fatal1ty kept changing games without achieving much (well, in q3 he was the greatest for some time, but in ut2k3 got 3rd place @ eswc and lost in wcg2003 qualification. sry if I don't know about smaller competitions ;P).

Looks to be a great match, I don't play UT myself but know like all games there is a strong community built around the elite hardcore gamers.

My only question is will there be a Half-Life DM/AG play off? I know a few super elite monkeys never seen on the pro front that I know would walk over any competition put forward to face them, shame the CPL WC isn't held in the UK as well as the US.

People that don't play UT always assume that they are the same game but UT and UT2k3 are 2 very difference games. Just think of the difference between Quake 2 and Quake 3.

UT2k3 isn't a lot more different from Q3 than it is from UT. Just because the weapons look like the old ones doesn't mean that the they're the same game.
Weapon balance has changed considerably, the aiming style has changed, the maps were different, armor management changed enormously, weapon switching was about 4x faster.

Take it from someone who played all three games. In fact, if I really felt like it I could name just as many similarities between Q3 and UT2k3 as I could for UT and UT2k3. However, I won't do that because I know some ignorant ass (not referring to you) will come up with the fact that the movement looks more like UT and then suddenly forgets all the other aspects of gameplay.

But to answer your question, UT2k3 is not that very similar to UT. Both games are fps's yeah, if that's what you mean ;p

Yes, fat would most likely win a q3 match but as reaper said, gitzzz hasnt played q3 while fat has played ut2k3. Sure fat has won several CPL tournaments. But in my opinion WCG/ESWC is a more international tournament than CPL making them more prestigeous.

I'm not saying that fatal1ty is a bad player, he really deserves one of the top 3 spots in this contest (for many reasons other than just his playing). I'm just saying that gitzzz has something special that fatal1ty doesn't have. Although I can't put my finger on it.

Fattyboy gets my vote, he really is the best allround top gamer today, with impressive ratings in several tournaments and games.
If Gitzzz had put the effort to conquer other games, I am sure he would be able to even beat fatal1ty's track record, and even though he infact is unbeaten in ut, i still feel that fat actually is the best gamer today over all.

Remember that these guys play and actually thrive at a level that 80% of this site can only dream of achieving.
With fat actually placing 3rd in ESWC (which, if we are honest here, really had all the top dogs in one batch), proves to me that he is really something special in gaming.

True, but keep in mind that fat's favorite map (Insidious) was overly used in the CPL's 1-map=win structure. The map was probably the most hirrobly designed 1on1 map ever, and that's why guys like zulg hadn't practised it. Also the reason why no serious tourney except for the CPL used it.

fat on the other hand had practised it into oblivion, hence the 25-0 win there (if I recall correctly).

Don't get me wrong, I ain't saying that it wasn't a considerable achievement. But there are factors involved that made that particular CPL... 'different'.

imo this poll isn't about who dominates the respective games they play, it's about their dedication, staying power and image and track record. IF you make the argument that you voted for Gitzzz because he dominates at UT then by those same merits we'd have voted for ZeRo4 or cooller if he were in it to win over their opponents simply because they are the best at quake3. But, that doesn't make any sense and obviously, ZeRo4 lost his challenge. This is why fatal1ty should win this match up. You can't expect fatal1ty to be extremely dominant in 1 game when he has switched etc so many times. And the fact is, he was extremely dominant back when he got his start as a pro-gamer in Quake3. His track record in Quake3 alone is astonishing, then, he moved on to AvP2 and won that tournament hands down, and also won the ut2k3 cpl championship shortly after he started playing the game altogether. He wasn't an extremely dominant player in ut2k3, but he had no prior UT background and less experience in the game altogether, so of course GittZzZ has him beat in UT because that's all he has to focus on. might i also note that fatal1ty RECENTLY switched to counter-strike and his team placed very well at the cXg tournament which never really officially went down correctly, yet they were very impressive in that tournament only weeks after forming the team. Fatal1ty has won World Cyber Games in Quake3, and the largest prize money ever given out to 1 person to my knowledge ($40,000) at razer CPL for Quake3. He was dominant over ANYONE in the world in quake3 at that time. He even came back after switching to ut2k3 with no practice at all and was 1 overtime frag short of qualifying for wcg 2002, in the same year he shutout ZeRo4 (2nd best in the world) in quake3 with no practice at Quakecon 2002.

i think a big factor here is that gitzz is german. knowing what the germans are like regarding games like this its very hard for gitzz to promote himself as such, unlike usa where they push anyone into the spotlight if they are good.

so, that means that gitzz is well known purely for his skill as a gamer (regardless of game, this isnt a poll about who would beat who in x game) where as fat is well known for his skill yes, but also for his promotion.

Gitzz has dominated the ut series of games, he has not fallen to the wayside, or given up on a game as more ppl come to the top, he has just brushed them away.
Fat has dominated q3 then left when others were at his level (zero4 for a start) he owned avp2 (not hard considering it wasnt a viable platform for a competitve game so not many would of taken it seriously) and then he had some time at the top of ut2003, yet when UT's best joined the fold he failed to show.

Yes its great that fat has done so well in so many games, but then hes had the backing to goto so many tourneys. Gitzz would of won more if there was more to win.

Its a hard decision for those left to vote, but its worth actually thinking before you just vote for fat coz of all his winnings and his self promoting.

Fatal1ty did some great things, but as morba stated, AFTER q3 he didnt dominate anything at all, he was there, and won some american compo's, but thats it(correct me if im wrong).

He did not dominate. But he placed pretty well at ESWC and CXG (without practice).
And he won CPL Winter, 10000 dollars, which was pretty ace imo.

When im boting i also look at if they pressed there mark on the community(they both managed) and flexibility(also they both managed to play on high lvl in different games). Good, then the people who wrote the profiles have succeeded. They are suppose to be biased, they are suppose to be a celebration speech for that player. The case was to promote that particular player as the greatest gamer of all time.

I thought only Americans attended that tournament because it was a sort of test for the real WCG which started in 2001. As I remember UT didn't have that much competitions in the form of Big Lan Tourneys early on.

Duh, it was a NEW game. Most UTers also only had 5 months of UT2003. Sure there were some things that transferred (dodging, combo) but for the most part they had to learn from scratch also.

Yes, GitzZz is there for the competition. For the first time I met him in Milan, we were both at NGI LAN 2 / WCG.it. At that event one of the best UT players in the world, vicious (if you don't know, he was named as one of the favourites of the WCG tournament, next to lauke and GitzZz, who incidentally beat GitzZz and flocutus in the nations vs nations competition a year earlier with Ryo-Saeba), decided that he doesn't want to participate. All of vicious' friends tried to make him change his mind. We tried absolutely everything and he still said no. Then I went to GitzZz and asked him to ty and talk to vicious. Do you know what he did? He was trying to presuade vicious to change his mind for a half hour and when he realised it was futile, he sat for almost an hour in a corner, dejected. Keep in mind that without vicious the $20,000 at WCG would be A LOT easier.

As for destrukt, he won the WCGC with players from the US, UK, Canada and Korea. Some world championship, heh? And you seem to be forgetting destrukt failed to take the WCG title from GitzZz because he didn't even qualify from the US in 2002. destrukt left UT because there were not enough tournaments, this had nothing to do with the number of skilled players.

you may as well have written it, since I know who wrote it and I know he's your butt-buddy who shares your same, warped view of fatality. All this crap about UT vs Q3 is a moot point anyway, my post was intended to bring up the startling disparity in treatment of players, and how their images are projected in their profiles. The writing here is never that great to begin with, but you would think that if this was meant as an objective competition, you wouldn't try so hard to sway votes. Just let the people of this site decide who is the better gamer, however they understand it (and they did, albeit in a LOT closer fashion than I think Gitzz deserved).

My points about fatality and his ability to rise to greatness in a short time either will work against, or for me. But in the end, this point can do nothing but work FOR him, never against. Unless you are willing to go out on a limb and say one scene has more talent than the other, it can't be denied that fat was able to produce extremely good results in both games. Q3 he dominated early, and was able to stay near the top even when he was doing multiple games (Qcon 2k1 was after he had finished with AVP2) Ut2k3 he won at as well, but with less success overseas. If you'll remember, he was already making the switch to counterstrike when he failed to qualify for 2k3 WCG... Either way, he is now a solid performer in a relatively higher up CAL-I top 10 level CS clan, which is just another egg he can throw in his basket.

Fatality defines what it means to be a gamer, a really fucking hardcore gamer. If you've ever talked to him, sure, he doesn't come across as a humble, intellectual ambassador, who quietly lauds others while putting himself down. He might not be well-spoken, or even gracious in defeat, but really, how many people are? You just hear it more from him because he's very often in a position where his comments are heard. Fuck that anyway, so what if he's a brash, cocky, confident kid who honestly believes he has more gaming talent than most, if not everyone. Whether or not thats true, well, you can decide that, but I sure as hell wouldn't bet against him too much, because he has a tendency to win or come very damn close, and to me, thats what defines a great gamer.

The person who wrote the profile for Fatality is a Fatality fan. I am sorry if he disappointed you in the way he wrote it, I am hardly the one blameworthy here. About swaying votes - we were specifically asked to write the profiles in such a manner as to try and make the gamer look like he deserves the absolute #1 spot. And again, I am sorry that Fatality's profile did not meet your expectations in this respect.

I never said Fatality did not produce bad results, although I said he failed to ever live up to Fatality'2K. I believe QuakeCon was in the Summer and the car Fatality won at CPL Winter. Ask the players who were at CPL Winter for UT2003 to tell you how serious they think the tournament was (the only thing serious about it was the prize money). Anyway, I do not think that for someone who can afford to play a dozen hours a day to play a game for a living there can be mitigating factors for not qualifying to a WCG.

I did not bring up Fatality's cocky attitude in the thread at all, although I took it into account when placing my vote. I believe he has the right to act in a way that will sell him best or suit him best, I have no problem with that. I do know people who are humble after their losses - zulg or ZeRo4 might serve as very good examples here.

No, I mean to say that Quake has a competitive field spanning 3 different games, BEFORE quake3 even existed. UT starts with.. UT. Don't even try to say their was Unreal legends, because I will laugh. Not that I'm not already.

It just seems that the real life results contradicts your opinion that Quake 3's level of competition is much higher. No matter what you think is logical i.e. since Quake 3 had more competition since it has more "legends" from previous games it doesn't really matter if it is not proven by empirical evidences.

GitzZz didnt win a "few German LANs". hes won every major tournament hes ever been in. fatality has NOT. fatality has left games after people started catching up to his 8 HOUR PRACTICE TIMES. GitzZz owned the game until the sequel game out. what did he do then? owned the sequel. and WHO did he own in the sequel? among others, FATALITY.

some people try to bring bullshit arguments in like "UT has less skill, thats why fatality didnt win every tournament!". bullshit argument, me saying q3 is for noobs has just as much validity. none.

I think the most impressive thing about GitzZz is the way he plays. He is always in perfect control, he rarely walks into trouble. If he get's an early lead in a game it is pretty much over since he is so solid. Flawless timing combined with godly aim and a very strategic mind.

I think GitzZz is a more impressive gamer when looking at demos, GitzZz is as optimal a gamer as you can ever see (even more than Cooller on ZTN and Zero4 on PT4). But I still went with fat because of more wins in very different games. But it's as close to a 50/50 call you can get, if you ask me.

For me most impressive is his cool head. He isn't nervous when playing and thanks to this he always manage to win.

I understood that when watching more closly polish best ut dueller, because he has the same attribute.

I just think much more highly of GitzZz as he's stuck with his game, doesnt go around promoting himself and is simply a much cooler player. From the demos I've seen, Fatal1ty is a lot less great to watch.

Too sad GitzZz will probably loose this one - he really is the best :(((

Saw him at AMD ProGamers Challenge 2002 in Prague (which he won) and understand that there can be human aimbot :P On the other hand I saw fat only by GTV @ QuakeCon 2k2 (and he wasn't worth watching).

Also 2x WCG, ESCW etc.
Fat has nice scores over the world but they aren't so spectacular as Gitz.
And he did poorly in UT2k3 while Gitz showed in idealistic way why new biorifle is bad (by owning everybody with it in eliminations;P).

I just can't find in Fatal1ty play nothing exciting :P

of course Fatality is top player but not as good as GitzZz.
when MTV were making Fatality movie GitzZz wasnt playing in that competition so ppl thought that Fat is greatest, but look at the scores, GitzZz has really beat Fatality many many times and got many 1-st places.

Fat: he dominate Q3 for some time, played good in ut2k3
Gitz: dominate UT to the end, played top in ut2k3

Fat is a world class player at UT2k3 but he didn't exactly dominate the same way he did in Quake 3 in 2000.
