Event: ESWC 2004

July brings us more than just sunshine and a football tournament this year, but also the largest European competitive gaming event ever. The Electronic Sports World Cup, held at Futuroscope, Poitiers from the 6th to the 11th of July, will feature 500 players from dozens of countries taking part in 5 disciplines and competing for $200,000 in prize money.

If you are looking for information about this competition, interviews with players and staff, previews, predictions, recaps of 2003's event, or for our 2004 coverage, then you have come to the right place! Read on for all you could possibly want regarding this year's ESWC.

How about a money-like system?

Let's say every user has a limited amount of [+] he can "spend". People will think twice before distributing them as they wouldn't want to run short.
So what if you [+] a lot of quality content and don't have any left? Well, add some content yourself, so that you get [+] for it. For those who are not writers, yet appreciate the stuff posted here, the database could fill up their amount to a maximum of, let's say, 5 [+] at the beginning of each month.
And those who will have too many [+] could have an option to convert them into E$ Money - for example 5 [+] worth 200 E$. Of course the latter only makes sense if you FINALLY CAN BUY SOMETHING USEFUL in this laughable ES Shop! - or if there are nifty prices for the "richest" users.. whatever.

The popularity could be directly related to the amount of [+] you have. For example: 15 [+] is popularity title "Celebrity" - by the way: why not change those titles to something that sounds more appropriate, like "Newsposter" or something.. "Cool Dude", "Star", "Royalty"?? How does that fit on a gaming site?

Not sure what to do with those who would probably hoard their [+] (thinking of some Car..c dude here), perhaps someone else has an idea.

I think you're on the right track. It could be like a guide to what's good. Like, if a demo is popular, it works as incentive to download it. I guess it would be like combining the rating and the popularity into one easy thing.

It works fine the way it is. I like it in comments as well since it makes it easier to spot good comments. There has not been any indications of grief with the + system in comments, I don't see how there could be since all you can do is + someone which is a positive act. Perhaps a + in comments should be worth less than one in articles but it should remain regardless for the mentioned reasons.

I would suggest decreasing the rate of decay however, since someone who did some major good contributing a week ago should not have lost so much. Some way to link several authors to one major article (such as this one) would also be handy.

I wouldn't mind of you removed them, cause when a thread that is highly obscene gains more plusses than a thread with a great gaming coverage there has to be something wrong. But I guess the amount of active users will drop, due to the change. No more flaming journals and forum threads for people to write... lovely thought :)

The hotel with the special ESWC prices is full. They have some other hotels but those aren't as cheap as the one mentioned in this article or on the ESWC website.

The other hotel didn't include park entrance so that would cost an extra of 12,50 euro a day. The people from Ligarena called to the Futuroscope and they will have a same kind of ESWC package for the other hotel as well. I don't think it will have any influence on the hotel prices but atleast it should include free entrance to the park.

So if you still have to book a hotel I should wait a few days since they haven't applied the ESWC packages yet to all the hotels.

Yeh the hotel I'm staying in has a restaurant, reception, pay-tv, ADSL internet connection, bath, bar etc :) so it's lots better then the hotel from last year, but atleast that was free and we where out most of the day :)

I tried to book a train from Paris to Poitiers, only to find that they appear to all be full already...

So your best bet might be Stansted to Poitiers, it's £100 from Ryanair, I believe there is one flight a day though...

You can fly to paris and take the TGV, for TGV schedules, tickets and prices check http://www.sncf.com/

I'm going with the Thalys to Paris Nord and then get to Paris Montparnasse to catch the TGV to Poiters, from there you'll need to take a taxi, bus or train to the Futuroscope park.

strange, last year when I went I bought that tickets on site at Montparnasse station. And going to and from Poitiers, the train was barely half seated so it seems strange that it's fully booked allready.

Anyways, all I remember is that the site sucked bad last year (couldn't book online though it said so), might be the same still...

frog is the only non-asian participating in the korean pro gaming leagues. he also won the MBC clan team battle tournament 1st place in march. plz keep in mind when he was playing grubby in the recent wc3m he was playing with 2 second lag, and still nearly won. frog also won the blizzard worldwide invitational without losing a single map.

Too bad I never got a chance to get the demos from the Q3 finals. Hopefully this year someone runs to the computers as soon as their done playing the final and upload the demos right away :) else the computers will be shut down, locked away and returned to the manufacture.

The demos where recorded but after the finals the computers from the players got cut of and all the interviews, foto's etc started. They would bring the computers back upstairs to the tournament area but that never happend so never got a chance to get those demos :(

If you set that image, I and other people got a 404 error... Anyway, it was identical to img1, which is what I originally used (I don't like the transparent thing either).

roughinery has been dropped from the map list for UT, making it a measly 2 map rotation.

the computers motherboards were being retarded so the map was dropped for framerate issues. so instead of delaying tournament 1 day, they dropped the map because rankin and ironic are running fine.

It's just that i can't see much of the promised unbelievable coverage; basically 2 journals per day and nothing more.
As i already wrote, there is no painkiller coverage at all, so why don't you do some?

Also for other games, not much is mentioned here. There are so many players there, so many tournaments; impressions can be shared and interviews can be made for other purposes then the esr film.
Find out what is happening, interview guys after games to find out how they feel and write your thoughts about matches.

If you place the bar high, you will have to work actively to keep a high level.

Dunno if its in here already (cant find it on the eswc site) but Groups 1 and 2 in the ut2k4 Masters are finished. Surprisingly, Zulg and Stryfe (who claimed he really deserved that eswc spot) didnt make it through the first group stage. Advanced have the frenchies from group 1, th0r^and Spawn, Varagh and the extremely strong looking German Burnie, who, like Spawn, didnt loose a single map. I´ll be looking forward to this tournament and iam eager to see if Burnie can keep his nerves...

This coverage is great! 2 journal updates at the end of the day, what more can you ask for?

I hate to be whining but if you're only going to hang out and have fun don't say before the event that you'll do coverage. And don't say that you've linked the score pages cause they're not being updated at all during the day, except maybe CS. And as someone else said, posting a link is hardly coverage.

For the rest of you that wants updates during the day I'd sugest one of the weird-language sites such as http://www.electronic-sports.com/index.php that's in french. They have small updates every 5-15min and the most up to date scores I've found. Also small interviews with players and so on. Basicly they do coverage of the event. But on the other hand they don't have journals so I guess they're missing the really important thing...

There s quite some coverage on the aAa website www.team-aaa.com (that has become quite fromage ounage with the new design, with the brand new aAa.shop ! and the tonns of news).
It is in french yes ! but if you register then you can choose in your profile which langage you want. Loads of news are supposed to be translated (didn t check for the eswc coverage but if ever it isn t, just whine about and I ll ask suncorcher to wake the aAa translators up).

I believe it was thefou playing ZeRo4 on cpm1a. A few games before that thefou demolished someone on that map 60something to something small.

I wish the coverage posts (including the journals) were separate, and just linked to from a central sticky post. It would make it so much easier to comment on. As it is you have to browse through 100's of miscellaneous comments to find one's you're interested in. Last years coverage suffered in the same way :/

Well when it gets cluttered it becomes quite hard to find what you are looking for. I personally have a fair amount of time available to check through all the coverage, so no, it doesn't bother me much. Those that only have 30-60 mins a night to check up on tournament's progress may not be so happy.

I haven't seen anyone else complaining about it though, and I don't expect you to go changing the format of it all at this stage.

As far as the content of the coverage goes, I'm fairly happy so far (thanks!). I would love to see a video interview with if22 - regarding the way he got into the team, his preparation for the event, the crash, and how he feels the tournament has gone so far for him. A few times I have heard people mention that his attitude is much better in-person, and it would be nice to see how he is doing after the crash.

hmm sounds like Jay has been making too much of a name for himself in ways other than playing Q3.

A couple of corrections to Daishi's Saturday update: I think he means infinite rather than infinity, and I believe zr0 is the UK captain (unless this changed?).

I wouldn't mind knowing who else thre punches and what the Russian team did... :)
