The number of muslims in western contries is in the millions in each country and will only grow. Then the muslim communities will start making inroads into politics and government. I've never blamed a religion for an action. If anything, I blame the political foundations behind Islamic states for causing extremists to exist. Fact is that John Paul II was the first non-Italian Pope since 4 centuries ago if I remember correctly, and he did make something for his people.

Now you might love him or not, I won't be the one defending JPII as I'm an atheist for a start and I dislike things he made, like forbidding condoms - which has probably caused more deaths than a lot of massacres he condemned - but you can only understand why Poles are so sensitive on this subject. They had reasons to love him.

Some of the comments in the Pope related threads over the last few days, Do qualify as religious racism which in the UK (both yours & my nation) is a Criminal Offence - The Police Forces mission is to - 1. Protect Life, 2. Protect Property & 3. Uphold Law. So yes I do have the right to a freedom from experiencing this.

That isn't law yet in the United Kingdom and there is a significant effort to prevent this stupid law which will stifle free speech due to the poor wording allowing the threat of litigation over any point religious people find disagreeable. Plays, TV etc will just not risk the litigation hence the censorship.

What I find amusing about this law is that it defines atheism as a religion for this purpose and says that any material published etc only has to offend a member of a religion to qualify for religious hatred. Well I find the bible rather offensive in places, all that burning in hell for unbelievers etc, maybe I'll take christianity to court.

Finding solace in an IQ score shows intellectual insecurity. IQ tests were originally devised to identify mentally retarded children, and suddenly ppl use them as an accurate indication of their intelligence? A survey was conducted a while ago, questioning people who set IQ tests, and very few of them were able to properly define intelligence. If u cant define intelligence, how can u measure it?

ATM all an IQ test does is measure how un/fortunate u were to receive a bad/good education. This is highlighted by the fact that most people can improve their IQ scores by over 30 points just from training :) IQ scores improve by up to 25 points EVERY generation. It's fair to say that each new generation is a little more knowledgable than the last (how many of your parents would need to go school for a year just to gain your level of computer literacy?) Your current level of education (or lack thereof) has NOTHING to do with your potential intelligence. Potentially speaking, the next einstein could be working @ your local supermarket, currently in the process of wasting his/her life, and never realising that potential. They wouldnt even score highly on the IQ test because their education was lacking.

Whenever you learn something substantial (e.g you just did a 4 year degree) your brain is now "wired" slightly differently. Your upbringing, and school life, determines how well "wired" your brain is. Think of it as a muscle. If someone came along and said "pick up this 80KG weight" and u couldnt do it, u would be branded a weakling forever, but u know damn well u could lift it with some (alot?) of conditioning! People who score highly on tests have been undergoing this conditioning all their lives.

Another analogy! Can u become a 1337 player if the only training u can do is with bots? Maybe u have the potential to beat the shit outta zero4 on t4, if u had the right competitive surroundings, but u aint gona realise that potential playing bots. Alot of people with potential are born into intellectually unstimulating lives. IQ tests can be useful, but only for their original purpose. IF you're intelligent, (not u in particular) then i would find it odd that the only place your intelligence manifested itself was in an IQ test. Whoever bothers to read this whole post, i'm sorry for making it so lengthy, but i get annoyed easily! :/

I got bored of reading about half way through the first paragraph, but I think I have a rough idea, or atleast enough to wing a reply. 6 years ago in my final year of High School, I was tested as part of the govornments ethnic minority equal opportunities testing scheme (program to acertain, why minority groups under achieve compared to caucasian students within the UK). As part of this scheme I was given an IQ test & a Dyslexia test, something I am grateful for as after being diagnosed with Dyslexia I was given aid in dealing with issues I had (Visual Memory Dyslexia not grammer or spelling related), I was also allocated 25% extra time in all my exams at high school, When I began college 5 years ago I was retested for their records to see If I was eligable for the 25% extra time within their system (I was). The Home Mensa test, was my mothers idea, & I was intrigued by the prospect (I scored way higher than I thought). I never once took a test out of insecurity, 2 where neccesity & 1 curiosity.

I didn't take the full invigilated Mensa test (I took the home test - If you do well they advise you to participate in the Invigilated test) So I can't be 100% certain of my IQ according to Mensa, however my IQ test at High School put me in the top 10% & at College the top 5% of the population, Mensa is the top 2%, so It has to be somewhere within that region, however without checking I couldn't tell you my exact score (I'm no Einstein thats for sure - Though Both Sylvestre Stallone & Carol Vorderman have higher IQ's than Einstein)

Getting back to religion, in my experience, some people need a religion more than anything else in life. Without that reason for living, they can be dysfunctional, depressive, or just unmotivated :D. Others dont need it, and are comfortable with the fact that we know less than 1% of all there is to know about the universe.

I thought we lived in a time were people realised that religions are a joke. They're full of non-sense (yes, this has been proven). Though the ideas they come forward with (peace, understanding, love, ...) are generally a good thing for our society. But honestly, how can you still believe. It seems impossible to me. Mankind (or atleast i have) has reached a level of intelligence where we can prove there is no such thing as God or a messiah.

I won't laugh about the Pope's death, but the last few years before he died were so embarassing. He could barely move or talk, yet every day thousand of people gather at his little window to see him. That's sad.

We aren't intelligent enough to say what happened before the big bang. Or why there was a big bang. I'm not religious but until we know that you can't quite rule it out, agree?

There are answers to those questions.. But since it has billions of years, our current technology doesn't allow us to actually prove that (and it never might). There are theories which seem very logical to me.

Im not really beliver, and I hate fanatics, but taking scientific point of beliving people, I would say that it wasnt God himself who wrote the bible. Bible was created by humans inspirated by Great Spirit. This mean they couldnt write something they didnt understood, and so they wrote in the way their knowledge allowed them to. After all you dont explain fractals to six years old child ;P

At the moment Poland is in official grief. Vatican flags and fotos of the Pope in the windows. Internet portals are black and white so as the television channels. I'm not religious, but when he died it was an enormous shock for me. I was in church with my friends yesterday... well, it was rather today, because it was about 00:00 - it was open, there were lots of people praying inside, I wasn't praying - I'm an ateist - I was wishing him best luck. Today churches are also full of people who want to thank the God for such a good person and pray for the Pope. I'm not telling he was the greates man on the whole world, the Alpha and Omega and God himself, but he was certaily a very good, unique person who had a great influence on my country and millions of people on the whole world. I wish you and your countries the same.

Why do have to be so sarcastic about this sensitive subject to all post-communist coutries? By reading your post/post I caim to the conclusion that you didn't really experienced what this ideology is. If you had you wouldn't talk about it like that, because all people know - religous or not - that the pope pushed a whole nation to fight with the system. He didn't crush the communism, he gave us hope, he pushed us to do things we didn't think are possible and therefor he contributed to everything what we have now (and not only Poland, those who know history know, that the fall of USRR began here, in Poland.)

agree. I know how this sounds to most polish people but you have to agree with this. This doesn't mean that I didn't felt inspired by him. Most young people that are christian are more tolerant when it comes to those things, they also use condoms because they are smarter then that. If you ask a random young person on the streets of Warsaw about this subject he will definitly say the pope hasn't got a positive aproach on those things, and that they use condoms because they are smarter that this. PS. To all poles who know me. I'm not a christian. I never was. I was raised in christian family though. Religion is a tabu topic for me because I usually speak to christians and when it comes to religion I'm afraid that I might bring up arguments that would simply hurt the person I'm talking to. Religions were made to explain what people couldn't understand a long while ago. But now we became smarter, there shouldn't be a need for this. Religious seem to claim that religions make people more tolerant and help them in their life. Dude that's bullshit. Do you need to believe in a imaginary person living in the sky to be tolerant ? Especially when this imaginary person makes you commit suicide-attack... Do you need to believe in a superman to keep on living after you lost someone you loved ? Definitly not.

There are so many exemples that religions are screwing up our world... I'll give 1 of them. I live in Strasbourg and the jewish community is quite huge. They have a special school where only jews can go and so they live with each others without almost any contact with other people. This school ends when university starts and then they have to move with other people (Except of course if they choose to study in Israel and then they'll never meet someone from a different religion). I have 5 or 6 of them in my class this year and it's amazing how long I needed to speak with them. That was like " Are you jew for daring to speak with us? ". It was even more crazy with some muslims of the class. They didn't want to speak with them like if they were directly coming from Palestine. With time they learnt that they were wrong and could start chatting with them but claiming " ok but they're good arabs " like if there are good and bad ones... I'm not angry at them at all, I'm angry at the jewish community leader building up that big system closing links between people. The good thing is that they figure out with time that everybody is equal and they start acting like other people but in my opinion, they won't be as tolerant as someone who has been educated in a normal way.

My point is that especially with the Internet, the time has come to think that there's no holy god upon us but we're only great animals. We can be clever enough not to kill each others and start building some great things together. MAKE LOVE !

People who despise religion/religions should consider the very fact that they too are very dogmatic.
Their religion is often materialism, secularism or even nihilism. None of those is very pleasing to learn about.

Those ppl have very strong beliefs, often stronger than the religious ppl who often just follow the customs of their ethnic group and don't really care about it.

Believe in something or believing something is not true is the same intellectual attitude. And most of the time, if you think you have something to say, it means you believe.

After all, christianity in its simplest form is just about being a fan of Jesus.

Some prefer Napoleon, Alexander the Great or Einstein, some prefer Jesus.

And i think he sounds to have been a cool guy, tbh.

By the way, secularism isn't actually all that bad. In fact, I would argue that the worlds best legal systems are secular. Nothing says love quite like koranic law!

As well, the materilism phenomenon is actually happening throughout the western world, regardless of a persons faith. It's an issue that everyone needs to addresse, not just those damn athiests.

Really, what it comes down to is that I'm just glad that I can't hold up a book and proclaim "this is the truth." What a crock of shit.

As far as jesus being a cool guy, well hey, I think Han Solo would be a cool guy to. Both fictional characters who die fighting the forces of evil, only to come back and save the day! Woohoo!
