The True Gamers Invitational (QW) and The European Duel league Finals (Q2). EDL was in 1999, the TGI probably too.

What's ng? Yes the personal page is mine. It was a page that I originally made to help someone who is a complete newb to q3.

And both the European Duel League (Finals, Q2) and the True Gamers Invitational (QW) are on the list, both under 1999. As for qh lans, a)did top quake players attend? and b)is there a webpage where i can find dates and results (or if you know can you tell me)?

As for cpma (and rocket arena) i considered including these, but basically didn't because the page was already taking me too long to make. I also think i tried to find information on some of these tournaments and found it difficult or impossible. Many tournaments either don't bother posting results, or the tournament webpage (if there ever was one) is taken down shortly after the tournament is over.

There are a number of tournaments that took place that I am aware of and wanted to put on the site, but I was simply unable to find any useful information about them. These tournaments include: Barrysworld q3tdm, el nova tdm, Resurrection 1, winterhaste, wipeoutlan, wansanity, summer regen, eastern quake league, and biaw33n. So, if anyone has any information (at least the date and the winner, preferably top 3 or more) about any of these tournaments or other important tournaments that I have left out, please let me know.

First of all, I thought you were niceguy of clan NA from the cpma scene, hence my little joke on your personal homepage, since i'm well acquainted with the other 'ng' (=niceguy).

Second, on the TGI and EDL post I was just confirming cyronix' posts that they did take place in 1999.

Now on the QH-Lan issue. These are the biggest QW lans of the new-school era, featuring players such as ParadokS, griffin, dag, reppie, fix aka the whole European QW elite. They're not as legendary as the events in which Lakerman, Kane and co. took place but the skill of the players is much higher. I suppose there same holds true for certain modern Q2 events.

As for the CPMA events, I have most of the information required so I might send you something when I find the time. For the moment, you can just include the QLAN2 CPMA comp results, taken from this url.

well for the moment i think i'll hold off on the cpma tournaments (sorry tastypie i didn't realize wansanity was a cpma tourny), but I would be interested in including some new school quakeworld tournaments. at the moment though if i saw the results of a new school quakeworld tournament i wouldn't know if the participants were the worlds best or just some newbs (but your shortlist there is helpful), but if you can direct me to or tell me about some significant tournaments results i'll take your word for it that they are legit. also thanks to all for positive comments.

new school qw is insane, easily some of the most skilled people in the world in fps gaming as a whole... imagine you played a game for 8 years straight? griffen dag and reppie and lg insane man paradoks are all just completely insane and would rape any old school qw player and thats not just me being harsh on the old school.

Would be cool to see some of these guys come to q4..

heh i'd have to install q1 to do that (i know its not very big but i'm just lazy), but i have seen some of the quakeworld movies, one called mortuary i believe and a speedrun movie, and those were really great. crazy multiple airrockets and shafting. that mortuary movie has good editing too. i wonder what the quakeworld community is like. are there many who still play? is it all 1 v 1? will any newb be instantly raped on any server? well, as i said before, if anyone knows any data on tournaments or links to tourny pages let me know.

- No, it's rather the opposite. Quakeworld is all about 4on4 and for those players who've tried QW but not really got into 4on4 and only got owned in 1on1 all the time, well, they've missed out on something great. Of course people play 1on1, 2on2 and whatnot but 4on4 is the real deal.

There are tons of high skilled players playing in many QW tournaments you seemed to not have listed. Smackdown ran a worldwide league for years, then NQR, QWWC(worldwide tourney), Duelmanias, and various small NA/AU/EU tourneys, etc. Many of these tourneys were as big and competitive as ones you already have listed for other games. Modern EU QW tourneys especially should be recognized.

yeah i realize i'm missing a lot of stuff in that area. some people have already directed me towards some sites i should look at, and i'll look for the tournaments you listed too. this is a work in progress so i hope to get to that stuff eventually. could you list some top new school qw players so i can be on the lookout for them in tournament results?

In EU there are a lot of top players, in NA maybe only really 10-30 over the past few years depending on who you ask. I don't know enough about the AU scene to comment really. Any tournament with a decent turnout will almost always have enough top players in it to make competition very hard, just like any other game. In NA anyways, usually almost every serious player plays in every tourney someone runs here.

Top EU players are guys like dag, paradoks, reppie, griffin, etc(mentioned these guys since they are great in duel and TDM). Def has been on almost every winning 2v2/4v4 team in the past few years in NA, and also won all the 1v1 tourneys too. At one point I think he was even top 12(?) in duelmania for EU with 105ms vs lower pinging EU players. Other than def top NA players would be people like yogic, fiend, and kovaak.

I just read the entire thing, you have alot missing from qw and q2, but the q3 is very extensive, and it was a nice trip down memory lane :) It's nice to see you have south africa listed in the WCG nation catagories awell, no one knows that our tdm is very strong here :)

It's also nice because you can see when was the most interesting time for q3, for me it is definitely the 2001 to 2003 period, with the russian invasion, and the swedes were finally showing their true strength. And of course, the greatest tournament ever, QCON2002.

Then again... 2000 was also nice.

If you carry on working on it, it would be nice if you could add UT and PK too, because then it will be a duel listing :) I'm not saying you do it right now, but over time, it will be nice :)

I just double checked the links and the only one that didn't work was qcon2005 which i fixed. some links, such as the quakeworld link, may be a bit confusing because it seems to go to a random tournament, but this tournament was the first quakeworld tournament on the list (as far as i know).

and tbone if you can think of any important qworld or q2 tournys that i missed, just tell me what they were called and i'll see if i can find something about them on the web.

How about FFA tournaments with prizes? I remember these for example.

I've wrote up a thorough review of all these games somewhere on my harddrive, maybe I'll try and find it, and upload it.

Anyway, very very very interesting games. Just assumed that because the US had the better 1-on-1 players they would just dominate 9. Really hit home to the world that a different kind of skill can prove more dominant.

After DR's first success at locking down the map in Game 5, expectations were high that DR had cracked 9's opening tactics and would then proceed to take the other dm3 matches. Unfortunately DR never managed to regain the cohesion that they achieved in Game 5.

The most notable outcome was that NQ players just weren't prepared enough for the emerging QW style - NQ players traditionally underestimate the effectiveness of the boomstick in highly experienced hands. IMO it was this which was the main contributor to DR's shocking defeat.

Unholy, Thresh, B2 and Makaveli played some Q2, yes. But so did some of the players in Nine (Paralyzer and Spice) while oKKun had practically stopped playing altogether, liquid didn't play at all and DOOMer had severely cut down on gaming. So it is no excuse.

It was enjoyable to read the discussions before the showdown was about to commence. The Americans were very confident, practically sure that they would win. However, at that time, the Nordic quake scene was at a much higher level than the American. It wasn't just the boomstick, Nine had total control over YA/Quad while Death Row ran around without any real goal, thinking that they were much better players and that they would win all fights any how.

When DR came to Sweden, in order to shape up they were practicing for the big game against nine by facing some mediocre Swedish clan (can't remember which, might have been TMT). However, even against such low key players, the best America had to offer wasn't doing well, at best they played even.

EU > USA.

I also seem to rememeber that circle jumps had been recently "discovered" in the game, and DR didn't know you could jump from one side of RA on the bottom level to the other. Strafe jumping also didn't exist properly yet. I seem to remember some DR members thinking Clan 9 were cheating with the jumps they could do....

You are absolutely correct.

DR really was in over their head. The fact they agreed to play QW and E1M2 really meant they could not have won before the tournament even started. They must just have been really arrogant. By this time the NA Q1 scene was already much weaker too wasn't it? EU QW to this day is still going very strong, probably even stronger than NA Q1 was back when DR played 9.

I think you have to remember that due to the massive split in the NQ/QW community there wasn't a great deal of interest for European quake from the US. Most in Europe *knew* how good 9 were. DR were pretty much totally dominant in the NA scene, and were thought to have some of the best duelers in the world at the time..
It was certainly a shock that DR could be defeated in "their map" (dm3).

Either way - the result doesn't correctly emcompass the tough struggle for both teams. They were most probably the top two teams in the world.

There's a very interesting demo floating about of a friendly 2v2 of DR vs. 9 on dm3 where Thresh and Unholy show the true nature of their skill.

What makes you think that DR would be better than the Finnish clan Z, the Swedish clan A or the German clan SK? Z and SK who played pretty even with Nine and A who never lost a game. Especially considering DR kept losing against a mediocre Swedish clan such as IoP. From my perspective, DR was definately not top5 in the world but possibly on the lower end of a top10.

There were several 2on2s and 1on1 played while DR was there visiting, they were quite even in those. Mentioning the one 2on2 that DR won and disregard the rest is just biased.

i think it's funny that that one game where the US guys win show the 'true nature of their skill' and the other games don't.

thanks. funny thing is it actually seemed easier to find stuff about really old matches (like quakeworld era) than later stuff. it seems like people back then were more excited about things from a community perspective and considered tournaments and events more worthy of remembering.

What about Fusion? Was one of the biggest and best uk qw lans. With players like Ceno,Sujoy,Timber, Kran, Hakeem and clans like QPD, DC, HC CIX. and a duel tournament that i think was won by QPD TIMBER beating DC Nightwing in the final.

After WOlf 3D there was a 2nd game : Wolfenstein 3D : Spear of Destiny ... iirc

They weren't multiplayer. Wold3d is only mentioned here as a milestone in id history.

Very nice compilation you have there. So many old names that I recongnized from Q2. I would like to point out one (grievous!) mistake that I caught. In the Qcon 2005 section, you have third place taken by "Sarge." I don't even remember a "Sarge" playing in this Qcon, unless SargePDoom was there and I didn't notice. Anyway, 3rd place was actually taken by Chad "Rigg5" Dorsey. Just a little FYI.

Sarge P Doom did play in the q2 tournament but as you said, didn't get third.

thats three tournaments mentoined just there. But your list is going to be gigantic if you include every major lan that had Quake on the program and a cash prize, from back in the early days. Of course that's the way it was done back then, sooo i suppose somehow the major should/could be included too. And it could be done, if someone cared about finding the information from each respective country. Find a Swede that would like to help in gather all info he can find about major Quake lan's/tournaments in Sweden, a German that would do Germanys quake history and etc.

So you think there was only five tournaments of Quake in total, through all those years, yea that makes sense. What i was getting at (!), was that there has been lots of tournaments, but for one guy to gather all the info would be hard work..Here in DK we for instance had DQL, Nettrip and The Party where quake prizes were given out, and it wasnt just local guys giving it a go, Ice Climbers dropped by TP00 etc. So as i said in the beginning, what criteria has to be met for a LAN/tournament to be featured on the list? Because if it's (just) a cash prize and the presence of known players, then your could add a lot more to the list. And a lot of those would also be more justified to be on the list, than some of the those that's already there.

To be on the list a tournament just has to have top players participating. for example if you have more information about this tournament the ice climbers were in, i'd definitely put that on the list. I just need the name of the tournament, the date, and who won (and preferable who came in 2nd, 3rd, etc. as well). One problem is that I don't know who the top new school quakeworld or q2 players are, but if you can convince me that a given tournament includes top new school quakeworld or q2 players I'll include it.

oKKun was second in both Swedish Quake Championships (Q1). In the second one, Mr.Kill was third, though he was only two frags behind DOOMer, oKKun was one frag behind him, it was extremely intense to watch :)

Xenon from UYB who came in fourth place (the same fellow who most people here likely know as a Q3 player).

Both competitions had a top of the line computer as first prize.

You also forgot to mention that the Swedish Quake Championships 97 also had a championship for clans, which was won quite comfortably by Nine (with Teddybears in second place).

The first Swedish quake championships (fragfest 96) didn't feature a TDM tournament. By 1997, the clan UYB was sponsored by Café Nine and hence renamed themself Nine, who then proceeded to win the TDM tournament of 1997.

i can give you results for eastern quake league 1 and 2 plus resurrection 1, but the dates are unofficial as i'm working entirely from memory. specifically, i'm calibrating what college dorm i was living in at the time with my memories of the matches:

eastern quake league 1 was circa may - july 2000 and was 1st - clan kapitol and 2nd - omniscient

eastern quake league 2 was circa june-september 2001 and was again 1st - clan Kapitol and 2nd - omniscient

resurrection 1 was circa june-august 2002 and was 1st - clan Kapitol and 2nd - ichorvile. this league had a weak field, however, it really did revive the u.s. scene and was very important.

can't remember 3rd or 4th place teams but someone else might

i'll pm you the lineups for all the u.s. q3tdm lan events if you'd like, although there will be holes

Surely if you include US league results you should include the UKCL.

Close on Res1! Ichorvile B actually took third in the tourney, to much surprise, but inevitable demise took 2nd. Maybe you remembered the players, who spent most of their time in 4, but they were [id] at the time.

There was a (ffa) q3test tourney that thresh won, called The Hive or something. I've got the q3test and demo somewhere to prove it. While it may not be of that much of importance (seeing as it is q3test and FFA), the thresh factor might make it newsworty

Billox wasn't any sort of UK duel champion. The Quakeadelica tournament he won was a sort of hybrid ffa tournament (they had online qualifiers and then ffa rounds eliminating players until only Billox and Leper were left, who then played a final duel round to see who'd be playing Thresh).

He was still a good player by uk standards mate, and not exactly like it was a close game now is it :)

one of the main ones its missing is ESWC 2005 were he showed just how amazing he is to anyone stupid enough to doubt it.

almost all those 1st place finishes werent even with all the top competition.

eswc 2003 and 2005, qlan 2003, CXG (yeh didnt finish but hey) also winning most of the russian tourneys which have the strongest lineup of attendees from any country.

Quakecon doesn't matter either. Except for the prize money, its about the worst tournament there is.

yeah i noticed that too. maybe he was a bit too early or just wasn't sexy enough.

I think there even was a small controversy at the doom3 or pk tournament 1 or 1,5 years ago when rix recieved a very high seed even though he had been out of the game or had no achievements in any way. He's a friend of angel or something.

He never had any success in the PGL, which had better players and was seen as being by far the most important competition, despite having online qualifiers. Lan tournaments didn't have the same status as they do now.

Bringing back the memories.. Who will ever forget the QCON2k2? Awesome tournament..

First, let me say that you've done an excellent work, the Quake history-nerd in me rejoices!

There was a Clanring Tournament for Europe back in -96 - -97, it was arranged by the same guys as the US one. FAQ (Finnish Allied Quakers) with players such as Zibbo and Perkele (the authors of FAQ Proxy, Qizmo and All Seeing Eye) beat the UK clan DC (Sujoy and co.) in the finals.

hmm according to those brackets it would have been impossible for faq and dc to have come in 1st and 2nd. Either there was a tie between FAQ and the corporation for 1st place or one of them forfeited, and since the faq page doesn't mention a forfieture i'll just assume that the tourney was unfinished and faq and the corporation tied for 1st unless someone tells me otherwise.

Zero4 must be the biggest money maker in q3, he had a real nice streak for a while.

Ichorvile entered two squads of their own in this tourney: 4a and 4b. Ichorvile (4b) finished 3rd here.

If you take a look at that timeline you just see Cooller winning one tournament after the other. He has simply proven to be THE superstar of 1v1 Quake.

yeah moscow has such a great environment for gaming with all the cybercafes they have. there are a bunch of players who are really good lan duelers and they have lots of little tournaments, and cooller gets so much experience for the big tournaments from that. i'm sure there are many of these tournaments with good players that are not in my timeline.

now compare that to the situation in the u.s. where before q4 there was basically 1 meaningful (where many good players would show up) lan tournament (quakecon) for the past few years and its no wonder that many of our duelers are lagging behind the euros and russians.

now i'm no cooller fanboy by any stretch of the imagination, but you'd have to be a fool not to acknowledge coollers dominance over the past few years. yes he has been beaten a few times (more than fat was in his heyday) by people like toxic and czm , but no one has been consistently at the top like he has in the past few years.

That's why the prospect of seeing the inevitable Fat/Cooller q4 matchup kicks so much ass. I mean they've taken such divergent paths since the early q3 days that it'll be really interesting to see the result of them both playing q4 will be.

To be honest I wouldn't be surprised if cooller beat him without too much trouble since he stuck with q3 and the level of pro q3 play was so much higher in the past few years than during fat's time, and obviously q4 is a lot more similar to q3 than unreal or painkiller.

i still think it's funny that at dreamhack fatal1ty said that the best q4 players weren't there, when fox and toxic were both there. now that they've taken 2nd and 3rd at winter cpl i wonder if fatal1ty may want to rethink that statement. I'm not saying this for sure, but he may possibly be in for a surprise when he steps back into the arena.

CXG wasn't finished, it never got to the grand finals, and if you don't update that, someone will not know that it was a disgrace for e-sports...and they must know =)

now they will know :). especially if they read the link to clOck's critique.

Besides the problems with the organisation, the Q3 competition brought a lot of great games between great players. It was the one tournament where Elpajuo was in such a shape that he could be placed in the top3 in the world at the time. The history of the tournament of course was Cooller dominating everybody, winning the Winners bracket. Zero4 would have needed to win 2 bestof3 series to winthe superfinal, and considering Cooller never lost a series against Zero4, but beat him many times and already had won a best of 3 in the tournament, he was the likely winner. A great shame the final wasn't played of course.

nice for q3 but very poor info on qw and q2:: almost no mention of online tournaments for those games :-(
