It's the same movement physics as quakeworld (HL is the qw engine with better gfx bascially). The gauss gun plays a big part in the movement though. You charge it up and it basically throws you in the direction opposite to where you fired, but it's very powerful so you can go ridiculously fast.

The aim garpy shows in such a fast game is quite amazing.

He meant hold it in after releasing in midair, and you can do this in qw, but it's alot harder to do in hl, I think you can do it but the timeslot allowed is much smaller.

Something to do with ground fiction afaik. The timeslot to do a sucessful bh in hldm is awfully small, which is why the decentjump script is somewhat standard (all it does is jump a number of times instead of only once each time you press jump to emulate qw behaviour), and even with that for some reason it's a lot harder.

you heard wrong.

there is the superjump, which is a powerup that gives you a long jump forward which you do by holding in crouch when pressing jump. but that is nothing to do with bunny hopping

Not what I was talking about. I know about the jump pack etc.. Just dind't master bunnyhop when I tested AG last time.

What I meant was that HLDM/AG is not as forgiving as QW with bunnyhop. YOu have to be more precise with when you push the jump button to keep it going. I just tested eQuake, and it feels pretty much like bunnyhopping in HL2DM Pro. Still can't do it right in AG.

You were right man. You have to time the jump it perfectly in HL (probobly in the exact frame, though I dunno) because valve tried to fix it. AGmod guys encouraged the use of scripts that hammer multiple +jump so it makes it a little easier to time. I never understood why they didn't implement the qw style where you can just hold the key down like you say.

valve also at some point released a patch which capped the maximum speed limit on the ground. When you went over the limit and hit the ground again it would immediately slow your speed down to base running speed. agmod got rid of this though through a cvar so you can toggle it on and off, if I rememeber correctly.

You were right the first time though. You can hold it down to bunny. You have to let go and re push the button after you've landed, but as long as you're holding the jump when you land you will immediately bunny. Doesn't matter when you start holding the jump as long as you're doing it when you land. Works that way in all quakes. Doesn't require any sense of timing at all really

try it. Jump by double tapping the key as fast as you can, but hold down the second jump all the way though your tracejectory and whilst you land. You'll see you immediately bunny again when you hit the ground.

good videos no doubt, however calling garpy the greatest hldm'er is FAR from the truth, not to take anything away from garpy but he was not the best:( George Kaspiris formerly of team TRU,SYN and the cs team xeno, now working for the CPL was in fact the greatest hldm'er ever to play the game.

George was a very decent player, however the americans took a liking to boot_camp and i hardly ever saw much from them on other maps. Stalkyard is a whole different story, and although George/neo all those guys were good players at one point the game so surpassed the days of wall gauss and spam that the americans so loved.

Whilst your right in that it'd most likely be wrong to say that Garpy was the best player the game had to offer (and knowing him, I expect he gets pretty embarrassed by what a lot of the fan boys that tend to follow him around proclaim), you're pretty far off the mark offering George up as an alternative (though he could certainly talk up a good game and promote himself)

I've have no idea about hldm, have never seen the maps and at least once I thought garpy was doing something very dodgy.

Now I know why I get accused of cheating whenever I play cs'ers in quake - if you don't know the game lots of things look like cheat ;)

Doesn't A3D still work in CS 1.6? That's the EAX alternative that has the very 1337 side effect of doubling the audible range correct? I wonder if all the major clans use Aureal cards, or if they don't bother since tourny computers are probably all using creative these days?

I remember having to to use soem a3d driver ment for another card on my creative card, i had to run hl in 16bit mode tyo get the a3d driver to kick in :D, id put money some of these demos are quite old? garpys was playing PK and before that eve-online :D

Too fast imo... I almost got a headache. Not very strategic either. Not very exciting because his opponent died so fast that you didn't have time to really appreciate the frag. No interesting infights. It was just... THERE! BAM! DEAD! -> repeat.

Not to take anything away from the players. Still amazing that they can play this fast etc. But really, got kinda boring after a while... =/

It's a far better experience to watch a demo from hldm when you are actually decent at the game yourself, knowing what you and other people are capable of then seeing the decent efforts at certain moments. I don't think you can appreciate the game really.

dont get the theory that the faster the game the more skill is needed(that some here seems to think) in my eyes it just changes the factor in how in how much movement skill is needed compared to aim/strategy etc.

after watching the video it looked like fun and he was prolly uber good or whatever but i also see why the quake games have lived longer and been more popular, it just dosnt have the same flow and smoothness as quake at least. and whats up with 100-0 match? must be some better demos than that

there are a lot better demos but people always seemed to like the garpy vs lynx one just because of how on garpy was during that match (lynx was one of the best players at the time as well)
its one of the most requested demos and since it was played on an earlier version of hl a person would have to reinstall/patch which is the reason i think it was finally made into an AVI

another good demo is garpy vs vortex on stalkyard where garp actually loses but makes one hell of a comeback (getting like 25 kills in 4 mins)

Your right, speed does not equate to a more skillful game. And whilst it may open up other areas of skill (such as in movement and aiming), it can also close a lot of doors on other areas.

One thing is for sure though, speed does tend to equte to a lot of fun. And despite its many flaws, HLDM was certainly that. Infact, if you asked many of the players from that game whilst they play it, often the response would be that it just so much fun to move about the maps.

As for the game not being as popular or as long lived as the quakes, well, your half right. It certainly hasnt been as popular (though it hasnt done too bad considering), but it was definately as long lived. The game came out at the end on '98 and was still going strong till around the beginning of last year (there were perhaps close to 40 clans playing in the main european league), which is a good six years of gaming.

It did seem though that a lot of players were waiting around to see what HL2 would do, and when they spectacularly failed to deliver, most players gave it all up and the scene kind of collapsed. Adrenliner Gamer 2, which I was heading up, would have perhaps brought most of them back since it would have took the best bits of HLDM thown in with a little of the best bits from other games such as quake. Unfortuantly though, we ran into huge problems along the way, both staff wise and coding wise (the hl2 engine is far worse than doom 3's for mp gaming if that gives you any idea) and it never got finished.

Having a faster game tends to favor players with a higher sens (or higher acceleration at the least), which is a lot harder to control than a lower sens, especially under pressure like in big turnaments (ask fatal1ty, he "created" a big mousepad so he could lower hes sens and still be somewhat mobile).

So yeah, i think faster games takes more skill, but whether or not thats a good thing is a whole other discussion :-P

Sure, and fairly low sens is a lot higher than the sens CounterStrikers use (and that game is really slow).

In counterstrike some players can barely rotate 360 on a fatpad (~40cm).

being a former HLDM player at a high level you cant really appreciate the strategy until you play it as could be said for any other game. Garpy makes it look different because he's just that good... even some of the very best players in the world would look stupid next to him at this game.. there's actually alot of timing and stuff just like in quake with controlling the gauss which is like the 'key' item in the game.. the armor is spread about differently so you can't really control it but if you control the gauss / xbow you pretty much own the map.

perhaps because I have never played hldm I didn't find the video very impressive. What was the weapon that was giving a rocket jump like effect? it did no self damage.

I didn't see anything amazing, but that's just me. i'm sure the guy is skilled at the game though

Adrenaline Gamer. Like OSP for Q3. Only after a while, Valve removed the speed in HLDM in an attempt to remove speed from CS, so AG had to put it back, so it became more like CPMA to Q3 AFAIK.

well there aren't many fast fps whit this kind of rocket lancher and *i* think a rocket lancher should be a prediction weapon because aiming whit a laser is still less skilled imho.
playing whitout the laser tracking in hldm can't fun when u find your self whit 3 red dots in your head whit your enemys 3 miles away guided rockets at u.

You can turn it off also though. And in TDM, you can control more than one rocket :) So good team work will give fire them and let the one in the best position or the best aimer do the targeting :)

Too much hitscan in boot_camp. The other demo is better (and ofc there's tons of better demos in HLDM). This is like Death vs. Fat from CPL Holland. A classic but still there's better stuff out there.

(that is if you want to play the video in a better player than VLC ;) the download includes almost everything you will ever need to play video, without useless gimmicks)

Renkie was the best HLDM player

He beat two guys by playing only with sound (he disabled player models, but he still could see the map). Now thats amazing!

I just googled a bit, apparently a player called Lem beat Garpy lots of times so =)

It would depend on the map. For instance, on boot_camp it would not be that uncommon to see a score of something like 2-2 with two equal players, even after 20 minutes of play. But this is mainly because the map is just so huge (its probably bigger than The Rose in q4) and an extremely bad dueling map (though many will disagree with me).

Between two good players on a map like stalkyard, the games tend to be pretty close because even though it is extremely easy to spawn rape someone, it is also very easy to kill the person in control due to headshots (only takes one bow to the head, or one grenade planted on the ceiling to retake control). Think Painkiller with the stakegun, except far worse.

eh, try watching a good Q3 demo. Fox vs CZM @ aerowalk from ESWC for example... then notice the beatiful weapon combos, the nailbiting infights and the overall intensity of this extremely close match. Or watch the strategical complexity of a ZTN match between cooller and zero4. So what if the game is slower? That only means that the players have to hit more in order to beat their opponent.

Watching a guy fly around like an airplane while constantly making 180 degree turns and scoring 50-0 (or whatever) - with no real infights or armor control - was more annoying than entertaining.

armor control was also important in UT and PK, just to name a few other games. The strategical aspect that this adds is tremendous. Being able to control the gauss so you can fly around the map 300 km/h while your opponent can only "walk" around on the ground is just silly and probably explains why this game was so one-sided and extremely boring.

Well you must be skilled enough to hear the opponent and maybe hide untill you can get said weapon or a long jump pack, but people with the gauss are not invincible you just gotta know your game.And yeah the other games with armours are totally bowing down on quake as the ownage game, PK for sure is a game created by quake fans?
It's just different. Nothing wrong with change mate.. it is possible for you to leave your house..go now.

Armour was still important on some maps in HLDM, and to not have control of it was a major disadvantage at times. Perhaps it wasnt as valuable as in other games though, mainly because of the ability to headshot people. This is why 1v1 games tended to be more about denying your opponent a decent weapon than anything, which despite the fast respawn time (15s), was quite possible due to the long jump (which people also fought for control over) and bunnyhopping.

It was certainly different, and at times could be just as tactical as any game (there was a lot more focus on positonal play like in the old quakes, rather than item timing/running). And whilst I was on of those who did try and encourage mappers to get more armour in their maps, it wasn't that big a deal due to the nature of the gameplay. For example - discounting getting a headshot in - killing someone with 100/50 and a longjump is a lot tougher to do than killing someone with 100/150 in Q4. Of course, this does go to show just how over powered the long jump could be, but thats a whole other matter.

I don't think you really understand how big the map actually is..... Bootcamp is quite a big map with a lot of items on it but garpy is in control 99 percent of the time. Just because you can't see the strategy in it, doesnt mean it isn't there.

When I played HLDM back in 1998 we used to do funny pre-historic things like staying on the ground and taking more than a fraction of a second to kill each other. I didn't realize how far this game could go!

I've got 33 gigs of skill videos and nothing in there is as amazing as this Garpy replay!

His mouse sensitivity is such that some of his snap x-bow shots seemed to take place entirely between frames! Couple that with his inhuman ability to aim by sound and kill through walls and you're basically looking at a living multi-hack!

It's like DeFrag meets FPS dueling meets the fast forward button! :-S

I think my brain needs to shut down for a week now while it processes what I've just seen...

As much as I apreciated the skill involved, the game just seemed mighty flawed and boring.

After the first minute is was just tedious, the speed thing however.... I could see QW being as fast had it the same type of large open maps and if the RL wouldn't inflict self damage. The second map seemd crazy small for the speed involved. I only skipped through it though since the first few mines drove me crazy.

I found UT / CS much more entertaining :( PK by far also... maybe I am just fucked up haha.

you guys kidding ? this movie SUCKED, a 50-2 / 100-1 matches, definitely exciting. quality was very bad for the filesize.
guys' movement was nice but that's it, there was nothing spectacular because the match didn't even look even. most boring 40minutes of my life. -disappointed.

He spins ten times 360 degrees and aims exactly at enemy. During close combat it shows most, that jerky movement or smting. Hard to explain :-(

the picture of the video shows it recorded at an FOV of 90, which explains why the sensitivity looks so high cause the actual play was probably more like 130. If you just up your fov higher the mouse movement looks much slower.

If you do not play you dont understand how he knows where the guy is but after playing the map for several years its much easier to know, how do you know where the other guy is in q3dm6 to shoot that rocket or head him off? You use the clues things you see missing, knowing the spawn points and so on, of course there is also a3d sound in HLDM which is better then having wall hacks.

It is an ok demo but as said its boring if you do not understand the game the same way a counterstrike player does not understand why getting that armor or health in quake was so important or took so much skill to show up exactly at the second it was spawning and swoop through. The main problem with hldm was stated manytimes in the comments. spawn raping, when you give people a weapon like the gauss which, not just shoots but exlodes behind wall and propels you in the air faster then any jump in just about any game you have the power to completely own a map once you get stocked and your oponents only chance is a headshot if he can get an xbow or gauss to do it. For this reason even seeing 2 really good players go against each other in hldm makes one look like a total noob and is a good reason why the game could never be a competive game.

Garpy has just finished his first entry into the world of pro gaming. He played the last 4 stops of the CPL Painkiller tourny. PLacing 12th at his best, and 15th I believe at the World finals. All this after playing for just 5 months, a good 17 months behind all the other pros.

He is already signed for a Pro Q4 team, and is reguarly practicing with Voo, and more than holding his own.

About HLDM.

The modern FPS games, are easy in comparison to HLDM. DO not be fooled by how easy Garpy makes it look, the game is as hard as it gets, with most players still improving after 3-4 years playing it religously.

Garpy.

He used a Gravis Exterminator in his left hand, the anologue pad for movement, and the other various pads and buttons for weapon switching and text binds. It made his dominance even more ridiculous.

Garpy in HLDM, was simply untouchable at his prime, no one could even get close. At the time of the match with Lynx on Bootcamp, Lynx was considered to be the leader of the chasing pack, and Garpy had literally got back from a 3 week break in SA just 2 hours b4 that match.

I dont doubt for 1 second, that he will sit atop of the q4 world, only rivalled by the very very top players. But time will tell :)

Yeah the stalkyard demo was a really bad one to watch not that bootcamp was great but from the start garpy gets the lucky spawn and jumps into the longjump game over from there on out and exactly why hldm could never amount to anything even though it had some really great skill sets that should definately be part of pro play. Turns into a spawn rape the whole time because the difference between being stocked and not stocked is too unbalenced. It would have been much better for someone to select a demo taht showed more the great gameplay in HLDM rather then just the how bad someone can rape another person aspect.

I see the fov was 100 not 90 still low but not as fast as people made it out to be guess they just are used to counterstrike or something.

i have played AG for 4 years now and i play with garpy regularly(even now... he has been playing a fair bit since the start of this www.redrum-demos.com 1o1 tourney) none of you really have a clue how close the game can be.. killing someone in control of the box room in stalkyard is known to be the hardest thing to do but still can be done fairly easily... if i play garpy now with all armour weapons and control start and he has nothing in a bad spawn area... give him 5 mins hell take control and beat me... marginly ;) but he will... sometimes you just have to be fast and attack the controller a few times and then kill him to take control or atleast enter the struggle for control. theres always a way of doing it or we wouldn't think about playing a map like that

also at the time of these demos garpy wasn't just the best he was untouchable to the point of sheer frustration... go figure

Heh, looks like this had found its way to some of his old HL buddies (me included) and its good that people outside the HL scene can see what an amazing player he was/is.

The best thing about him (and meeting him in real ife at various lans) was the fact it never went to his head. he was the most relaxed, decent guy i met. This translated nicely to his opponents as well. I was always a decent player but nothing special in comparison, yet i could still have a good match (especially on Undertow as he hated that map and I'd always pick it! hehe) with him as he wouldnt go all out and ruin the fun, he'd let me get my shots in and just play well enough to beat me. Was always a pleasure to play him even considering the rapings you'd always invariably get.

Was funny and strangely errie to watch him play though. He'd be laid back, jobpad and mouse in hand (yup no keyboard.. though using one never seemed to dull his performance) and looking like he's nearly falling asleep.. yet you'd look at the screen and he'd be tauing halfway across the map at lightning speed headshotting everything in sight!

Good lad our Garpy.. a big shout out to him!

Earlier some one quoted that Garpy would be the Q4 no.1, and would only be rivalled by the very best, loos like taht prophetic statement may well find itself to be true.

Garpy is one of those rare natural talents, a freak of nature, so to speak.
