We want id made maps. We want communty made maps. Maps are wonderful, maps are great, maps are the spice of life, the suger in my coffee, the spring in my step, the thing you put in the thingies to make thingies go.

Then whats stopping you from putting community made maps on QL? I mean I can understand that Method is working on rage atm, and maps like hub would probably cost alot, but there are hundreds of other good maps that are released and Im sure their authors would be flattered if they were featured in QL.

i think the only way would be a map contest so they wont have any legal prob. they should throw one even if they are focusing in the premium service and the drop off beta, they could give a small prize like a picture with the quakelive logo and the devs team signatures or something!

I love how syncerror isn't responding since it's fucking obvious that there is not one reason not to do some ql mapping contest or just add community made maps (aslong as the map makers agree to do it for free which im sure they will).

Atleast we can hope that since syncerror was one of the judges in that recent noghost mapping contest the winning maps will be added (pretty obvious its gonna happen).

I would hope they would be brought to QL, but if they were going to do that, why would they do the mapping contest for Q3 instead of just doing it for QL? It might even get the community off their back.

Okay, so there's all kinds of ideas about how to get more maps, whether its a contest or from map authors. If "everyone" wants maps, including:

-The company that makes the game.
-The players/community who play the game.
-Leagues who organize events that promote the game.

...then what is the hold-up? What is it that is so important that keeps EVERYONE from getting what they want?

Also if they kill the competitive scene now, the top teams won't be coming back probably, myself I know a bunch of div1/2 players that has gotten so bored of QL because of the lack of new maps that they have quit, probably permanently.

impact sparks is something that can be coded over a lunch break, I don't think you can compare it to creating a map...

plus I don't think the people doing impact sparks are the mappers.

Anyway, if was THAT hard to get it on QL maybe all that effort (and money?) should have been better placed like, as you are now guessing, community map competition. How hard is it to have an ID Map Design Contest with prizes given out to top 5 for duel/ca/tdm/ctf. They stipulate that all maps entered for judging in the contest become ID software property.

They have this mapping contest every 3 months. And juggle some servers that only have new maps on them for testing, then hold polls and have judging panels. Most pros for each game type, or a tournament with all the new maps and see the feedback.

we knew this in *1998* ffs, back in q2: one team uses athena etc, the other uses grunt etc, and hey, when you hear a jump or a pain grunt you know what team they're on.

q3 made the potential even better by providing distinct CHARACTER sounds as well, but the crucial split is the gender (tho keel+tankjr were also an advance, conceptually), for pitch and silhouette etc.

these things make for a better game - not a trivially-better one; a MUCH better one. why do you think i invented enemymodels?

Fun fact, most female avatars are NOT female players, and most female players pick male avatars to avoid being treated like a girl. WoW is popular with females because of the gameplay, and that's it. Why not tweak the game to make it more appealing for everyone, instead of looking to potentially appeal to a small percent of a minority group of gamers? Or, if you are adamant on wasting time with supporting such an idea, why not add furry avatars, since the furry community is exponentially larger? Vampires for the emo/goth fags? Witches for the harry potter crowd? Elves for the LOTR nerds?

...Or just make it fun enough that nobody cares.

Simple experiment - asked the girlfriend if she would have played Mass Effect 2 if there wasn't a female character and got a firm "no". She doesn't want to roleplay as a man (that sounds a bit wrong actually). I think this is exacerbated the more you're supposed to BE your avatar.

I also wouldn't have played it through if you couldn't be a female character because the voice actor for him was shit.

I can't disagree, although I wouldn't say it's even stupidity or ignorance just plain lazy developing and designers/writers mistaking games for films.

The great thing about games is that they can handle the player choosing who the character is. There are plenty of uni-sex names out there if the scripting is voice acted and small details can be changed for the desired story links if required.

If you look back at Half-Life, Valve included female HEV models for the MP but not a single scientist, security officer or Marine is female (Just the assassins) and the main character was given the very male sounding name of Gordon.

Deus Ex and Invisible War handle it all brilliantly. In the first game you can choose your race (Nothing was stopping it from doing gender mind you), in the second you can choose both race and gender and the game doesn't skip a beat (Alex is used as the characters name).

I can't think of a game were the gender of the main character was vital to the plot (Apart for Duke Nukem, but that's a parody) or couldn't have been worked around as in the City Elf start area in Dragon Age.

With regards to the TF2 part, I think the reason they avoided making specific classes female (apart from the Pyro) is to stop girls flocking towards that one/those few class(es), and judging from their player base (furries and just standard retards) they made the right call.

As for female versions of the classes, well it's a combination of worrying about getting the hitboxes right, getting actresses for the voices, the necessary work required to make and animate the models, and valve's massive massive incompetence due to the fact that they hire mod teams to make game engines. Look at the huge bugs every time they do a class update... they don't even playtest.

I've not actually played TF2 so I'll take your word for it, I take it valve use the lots of small boxes approach for TF2?

WOTLK was a huge letdown, but Cataclysm looks to have some hope! If they follow through with the promises at Blizzcon, it could actually be a viable competitive game.

I haven't followed Wow in a long time.

I did play the PvP, the classics, WSG and AB. AB was pretty fun back then. Grinded to almost Rank13 and then stopped PvP pretty much completely. Got fed up. I was more of a PvE player to begin with.

The PVP went downhill in BC, and totally crashed in WOTLK. The rank system was removed in BC (along with dishonorable kills), AV was totally destroyed, and arena basically took over PVP. It wouldn't have been so bad, but the class balance has been destroyed completely.

Though, while PVP took a turn for the worse, the PVE is much more exiting. Raid bosses are pretty easy compared to back in the day (most raid bosses are cleared before they even make it off of the test realm now) but the environment and the fight itself are very flashy, and feel more epic.

I did do SSC, BT, The Eye, Mount Hyjal. All Pretty decent. The Eye had with Kael'Thas probably one of the best, if not the best encounter in the game while the instance itself was one of the worst.

I was there for my 15th Illidan kill or something when I - once again - decided it was pointless and quit just before WotLK came out. For good this time ;>

The Arena PvP at that time was pretty pointless and not fun. But that may have been because I was playing Shadowpriest which was pretty useless in PvP at that time. No idea if they made any improvements. That Capture the Flag thing with the different bases wasn't much better.

WOTLK broke PVP far worse than BC did, and the PVE was FAR too easy at release. They did a bit better with content patches, but Ulduar/Icecrown weren't much harder. Pretty/epic feeling, but easy.

Cataclysm is supposed to completely revamp the entire old world. Not phased for high level players, but new for everybody. Along with that, they're completely revamping the stat system, and the way classes play. This could either be very good, by making classes more fun to play, and making PVP more balanced... or end up like NGE from Star Wars Galaxies, and pretty much drive everybody away from the game. =P

I think it is only natural that encounters become too easy if you look at the way encounters play throughout the years. People get used to things. During BC I had the feeling that there isn't that much more one can do with encounters to make them more difficult or interesting. Yeah, one could infinitely increase the multitask/team-play aspect like C'Thun or Kael'Thas did for their time. But that's about it and maybe not even favourable because in the end one would just appeal only to the top 1% of the guilds which probably isn't even your target market.

No-one is interested in cockblocks like Loatheb, 4 Horsemen or some "inexplicably broken encounter which makes it impossible to beat it and the dev-team is unable to fix it within the next 3 months"-situation either.

It is too bad that the Lore of WoW is so incredibly rubbish. I'd rather play Guild Wars 1 again for the story. At least it wouldn't feel like such boring and pointless grind.

DM6 is a fun ca map, but only because the rest of maps are shit. (qzca2 is okay for scrims)

dm13 needs to be retired, it is good to spec but not fun to play. T9 is the same, all running, very shitty map.

T7 is the only new good map for duel.

CA needs ra3 styled maps, with 1v1 arenas

The RA3 maps in general made me absolutely hate CA. Most of them (map1 and map11 included) seem like they were designed so teams of 8 could do nothing but use the 100-damage rail from 1000 units across open rooms. I never had an ounce of fun playing on this sort of map. If I play CA on dm6, dm7, dm20, t6, etc. it's just fine.

I completely agree with you there - but tbh duel has at least 5+ playable maps whilst TDM and CTF has about 3, thus focus on new maps should be for CTF/TDM first and foremost.

What CTF needs imo is another map like ctf7 - something with narrow passages and with the bases and mids kept small (roughly the same size).

ctf7 is together with ctf10 basically the only two maps getting played (and ctf10 is hate/love basically).

I'm telling you, if it keeps going like this ppl WILL find another game to move to where the devs doesn't rule the entire universe basically.

True- the comments haven't even gone too far into the "I want this map, this map or this map" whine this subject seems to always bring out.

If id had a shit load of maps the old good/played ones and new ones they couldn't just bung them all on. They would have to drip feed them or have some sort of map control.

Have these maps for 6months and swap them with another load but including 2 or 3 of the other ones etc.

Also I think the dude who made the point of making the maps that we have that aren't played into better maps is an awesome idea. You have basic structure and platform for testing, etc.

and they can even to alterations like the cool dm6 one that was floating about on here for a bit.
