you cant expect every map that's added to be popular. tdm eu scene uses premium maps almost exclusively so obviously not all of them are a waste. also new maps were the #1 complaint before all the new maps were added

What is with you euros? What can you possibly complain about? The devs cater to you, the population in europe has only declined slightly and you still have lots of competitions for just about every country there. We, those of us in the US, don't have such luxuries and the game here is in a freefall. If we're not allowed to complain then who is? For us, the situation is dire or a total meltdown can occur. TDM, CTF, Freezetag and insta are already complete ghosttowns. For you to throw salt on the situation is pretty sad and pathetic, especially considering, most european players are more competitive by nature, the exact playerbase id has been catering to with every update; noone plays tdm on U.S servers. If the tables were reversed you'd be just as pissed off about the fact that premium servers are abandoned especially if you were one of the fools who paid for a premium subscription. So laugh now, but if the U.S playerbase continues on this decline it will eventually cause a ripple effect in europe as well.

Why don't you set up #qlpickup.na yourself and build a nice community? Invite players from other games there, do advertising in popular gaming forums. CSN shows that there is interest in competitive play in your country. Are you really that dependent on a company?

Dude its' been tried. As i said, euros are "more" competitive than american players; eg, most us players are just casual gamers in general. Quakeamerica.com and many other sites who tried, have failed. There's simply not enough players left to make a difference at this point. That chance has come and gone. But again, it was tried even during ql's peak, and it didn't pan out very well. It's just 2 different crowds (euros vs u.s) and you guys will be all that's left in the end. But that doesn't mean that we have to take it sitting down.

what would it take to do this? I don't know what to do, but I'd be interested in being a part of it.

1. Set up an irc chan, e.g. #qlpickup.na @ quakenet
2. Get a decent pickup bot. I'm sure the #tdmpickup or #qlpickup.eu admins will help you out on this.
3. Invite every active player to idle in your channel. Advertise on all quake live related forums.
4. Try to get famous players like rapha/dahang to idle in your channel. They will bring fanboys and many players will be hot to play against them (even if its only in a tdm pickup).

The main idea is to organize the active and competitive ql players somewhere. Joining an irc chan takes less effort than being active on a website for example.

we have tried this multiple times every year, never worked for more than a week. I cant really explain whats wrong, I guess its just a difference of attitude / neglect for team games that require brain (unlike CA) in NA.

dont know wich region ischju is from but some parts in middle/northern germany are/were the very core of worlds salt production and the people there are used to it for generations, adding salt to every possible kind of food and eating many times the "normal" dose without problems. my relatives live there and even i can hardly eat a certain soup they make because my throat kills me.. my last name contains an old german word for salt, the city my family is from is named after salt trade.

They do plenty of advertising in EUROPE. As i've said for many years; Quake live = Quake Euro. This game is otherwise dead in the U.S..

For big maps, nothing. For small maps, in ra3 you could create many teams that would cycle with the winners staying in. Particularly good for 1on1 and 2on2.

Plus, ra3 had the game mode red rover which imho is one of the best mode for public play, as easy as CA to get in, but with less waiting and way more fun.

how did red rover work?

It starts with two teams and all weapons and armors like CA. When you kill an enemy, you get a point, he loses a point, and he spawns in your team. The more frags you do, the more points you have and the stronger your team gets. The match ends when one team is completely destroyed. The last man standing of the losing team however is rewarded.

I think it is superior to CA, especially in random public, because:
1) Although team based, clearly everybody cares about his own score.
2) Nobody can really screw the team by being too noob, too idiot etc.
3) There are no waiting time ever. You die, you spawn, and the rape goes on.
4) It creates very interesting evolutions, where one single guy in berserk mode can completely change the curse of the match.

Reworked mouse accel code, added m_cpi to set mouse DPI so sensitivity can be measured in cm amount. Counts per Inch (CPI/DPI) of your mouse, defaulted off. When enabled (by setting m_cpi to the CPI/DPI of your mouse) it changes sensitivity from a immeasurable number into a precise degrees per cm, ie sensitivity 18 would move you 18 degrees per centimeter of mouse movement, performing a 360 turn in 20 centimeters.

I know there are not making money of ql hence the whole abo system after all. I'm just gonna repeat myself. I know 5 people who started to play ql this year and bought either pro or prem. Why should I care about gamemodes I'll probably never play?
I play ca whenever I need to warmup for duel or when I just want to go apeshit and shaft people in 16 overkill games. There are enough ca games all day long and if you join the right games you don't have the usual 24/7 +back nading camper fags.
Then I occasionally play pickup tdm games and till 2am most of the time there is at least one pickup going.
I don't know but was there a tdm pickup scene like this in the year 2008? Doubt it ...

Ya, i've done nothing. good one. Keep believing what syncerror, incubus, ice, and others at id have told you, they are liars. It's only after i decided to turn on them that people like you have been brainwashed to think i've done nothing for the game. I WAS THE GAME IN THE U.S IN 2009/2010. I was banned in october 2010 - i was playing 5 hours a day. My abscence from the U.S CTF servers is felt dude, believe me it is. Some of them might be happy i'm gone, but the # of games i played made a direct impact on that population. And for every hater i have, i also have plenty of fans, many of whom quit (because i was their playing buddy). I might not be a tier 5 player, but i held my own and i helped people get better. Guys like mellowtab, mevil, etc. Other noobs that are slowly getting into tier 4 now and making a name of themselves.

There are so many factors involved that it would make your head spin, but what really matters to me, and what upsets me to no end is the fact that all the work i or anyone does in this community, is completely ignored by id. I guess i feel it's my duty to warn others based on what i've seen. I've seen id delete the old forums where a monumental amount of info was lost (graphics, guides, scripts, etc), info that could have been used to advertise the game. And that alone, pissed off a large amount of the real contributors of the game. I've also seen many 3rd party program makers get cease and desist letters to stiffle progress and/or stop innovation that would help propel this game forward. And i've seen them take credit for material they didn't make and/or not giving recognition to people who gave property to id for the love of the game only to witness id use their creations to charge subscriptions for it. I've seen a lot dude, and unfortunately a lot of it hasn't been good. It's really made me wonder if we're in the twilight zone because it almost seems like id is openly mocking the community and making a joke out of the game. My honest interpretation based on the updates/carelessness/and overall attitude of id software and specifically those in charge of the game's future.

1. make freezetag free
2. move some of the premium maps to pub servers (so people can get a taste of those maps)
3. make more frequent updates with content (i don't count cvars as content. do you?
4. communicate with the community. it's a hard to convince them i know, but try?
5. speak up against cheaters, tierslummers, stackers. That was one of the major differences in 2009. People were still allowed to speak their mind (without getting banned for doing so).

It's your game. Do something, instead of sitting on your hands and praying for the best. You and others fault me for bringing the state of the union (ql) to your attention, when really, you should be the one championing that cause yourself (since you love ql, and i apparently do not, amirite?). I remember reading last year or so that they were making like $200/mo from the in-game ads. Even if we assume that 5000 people have a pro subscription (and I highly doubt that), they're only bringing in $20,000/yr.

Every time they develop for QL, they are doing it at a loss. I'm sure any employee at id makes at least twice as much per year compared to the income that QL brings in. That, and they still have to pay for servers/upkeep.

The reason you see so much backend work is because id DO have a gameplan - they intend to license the engine to other web developers. I don't think they ever really intended to bring back Q3.

Not really. I know people who pay tons of attention to CS etc and they don't even know QuakeLive exists unless I show them. It's not ignorance or a scene/community thing, it's just it's badly advertised. The only way mates have got to know about Quake is either through me telling them or by them accidental watching an ESL stream or something whilst waiting for CS or whatever to come on

edit: and it's not about next gaming generation or something. It's about a free online game that's easy to install being played for fun. More and more web-browser based games are popping up and they're doing fine simply because they are free and easy to set up and jump on with mates. There was otherwise no advertisement, marketing done for quake live after i googled it further. That's why i never thought much of it till i once again accidently came across it 8 months later. Quake Live could really be pushed as the ultimate FPS attracting tons of new players if it marketed itself as the Formula 1 of competitive FPS. Focussing on the best netcode (i.e. CPMA netcode), fast 125+ frames per second gaming (unlike the 60 or even 30 fps of most modern games). The gfx could be enhanced to appeal to the new generation and take advantage of the processing power most PCs are capable of these days so long as this didn’t undermine netcode and 125+ fps performance. The maps would need to be completely overhauled, removing some of the old maps which really don’t cut it anymore and keeping only the really quality ID classics along with a number of only the very very best 3rd party maps from days gone by, and then we need a large number of great NEW maps either from an ID employed mapping team or from a community competition process. ID also need to swallow their pride and adopt some of the great 3rd party ideas from Q3 mods, GTV etc to develop a really modern and polished gaming environment. Players would soon forget that this was an old game and see it as the pinnacle of FPS gaming…

Additionally, QL could have it's own Voip servers so that all you would need for team games was to plug in Headphones and a microphone to automatically have team chat with everyone on your team - even on Pub servers (ofc /block would become even more important then considerring the amount of idiots there are on pubs spouting abuse...) Combined with the capability to create teams through the QL chat system rather than going to IRC pickup channels would make the game really great for newbies and veterans alike.

None of the above would be too challenging to achieve if ID wanted to make it happen and marketed the game properly... And it would be very different from VQ3 while retaining the great gameplay...

so you want cs? Well i can understand why. When i first came to ql from cs i wanted that too but i have second thoughts on it now. I seriously doubt that would end well (the voip servers that is) as racism/harassment is clearly not handled and enforced by id (not that they ever could if this game got off the ground) and could only be handled by private server admins. But with no lan servers or ultimate control over a server, noone else can step up to help.

That is the underlying problem with quake as it stands now; the development team and their unwillingness to work with the community to improve on the game,, most likely due to the fact that "They" think they acn do it better. Well i disagree, i've seen far better suggestions from the public than from the devs themselves.

Quake 4 had issues - from what I understand by the time they were addressed the damage was done and players associated the game with bugginess. I've only played it a bit, and it never "felt" quite right to me for some reason. Someone with better knowledge of Q4 might be able to elaborate further. But to some extent the Q4 direction and beyond for gfx improvements etc would be a good way to go... The truth of the matter is, young players these days want eye candy after all they've just spent £500 for a new gfx card so they want some shiny flashy stuff in return...

Oh and while I'm posting about how the game could be brought into the present day, fixing the sound system would be a good start... You can't claim to have an ultimate competitive FPS without players being able to hear whether someone is above or below them... sheesh. Oh and just toning down the splash damage from the RL would do so much to improve gameplay...

yes but this community and others in the quake world aren't ready to deal with change. That reailty check is also lacking at id software headquarters. I agree this game (quake) needs to change to adapt to the needs of current fps gamers but its' not going to happen till the community as a whole accepts that.

As of now, they're perfectly fine staying in their small niche community with the 10 friends they play with on some pickup server somewhere that nobody sees or can get into, while the rest of the gaming industry continues to evolve. I agree this is the only way quake could work with a bigger audience.

For quake to work with todays audience it needs:

New graphics
New sound engine
New game modes ( with a modern game design perspective)
New maps
Physics rebalance
Weapon rebalance

Ladders and cups on ql homepage
Better netcode( no trough rails, no warping/ jittering. No network handling making dodging look a bad connection with jittering.)

For ql to work with todays audience it does NOT need:

GTV ( streaming works for 99% of the players)

More maps for team game modes
( A lost cause for ql. Team oriented players have way better options to choose from than ql)

More cfg tweaks
(unless they fix broken stuff like sensitivity handling, why is my sense still different on different maps and servers??)

If you want new everything, why don't you just wish for a completely new game? (not saying QL is perfect as it, because it needs changes, but you listed every part of the game)

Everything you listed only applies to Quake players. Casual players don't give a damn about any of that, aside from maybe graphics.

The game needs all that flashy GFX stuff. Tbh post processing would look amazing on Q3. I mean, imagine in a rocket fight, dodging and shit, then you get hit by splash damage and get projected out in the air, then the post-process would give you that rought movement sort of feel, like in Crysis when you made a house explode, and the pieces of the house looked blurry and added it a lot of impact and dramatism and realism to the scene, this but applied to the player model only (should take much resources to process)

It's just more things to turn off.

Most players (95) cannot articulate why they enjoy a game or whats causing them to dislike it. Its up to the developers to now how to interpret peoples whine correctly and to understand the fundamental problems.

im sorry but what? have you played any of the modern fps's? i'll take bad company 2 as an example. its hugely popular, even though the hitboxes were totally fucked, there was constant 'rubberbanding' with the player models, half the situations end in crosskills because the netcode is so antilagged, there are NO gameplay/spec features, only basic award/stats system and massive balance problems with weapons. what makes it so popular is the marketing and the fact that even the biggest noob can kill the best player in the world. its also new and pretty

I gave up on QL when after years of being released, you still get massive bright textures in some maps, so you are forced to use different settings in every map (like in House of Decay, the floor texture is bright-blinding as hell).

ps: No, I don't want any shitty workaround that makes everything look off, grey and foggy. I want to keep my r_mapoverbrightbits 5; r_picmip 5, r_vertexlighting 0; gamma 1.2 old-school rusky style Q3 cfg that worked well on all Q3 maps.

i noticed that when going from siberia to courtyard for example. I stopped changing my settings for that very reason. Was too time consuming and sometimes you'd lose your spot in q resetting during warmup and be stuck as spectator just to fix it.

he's talking about when he brightens the map using the overbright features. It can be very useful for people with laptops/pc's with poor resolution,etc . But ther'es a big difference between maps sometimes making it very tedious work map-to-map.

but back to this, the overbright fx can make a HUGE difference on some maps. It's one of the best features of ql.

No, I don't like that workaround. I like my map bright and clean, but not bright to the point it rapes your eye.
If you use r_vertexlight 0, you get those annoying ass shadows, even more if you lower the r_mapoverbrightbits value lower than 5.

With 1, you get some weird artifacts. On that particular place you can see the texture going black near the door, but on other places you get straight lines of shadows on the floor, ceilings etc.

well in QL you could use r_enablepostprocess 1 with r_contrast 0.8 to remove the sheen from the maps

or r_enablepostprocess 0 also helps sometimes

that's the only way it's similar, that its' made by id. It's obviously nothing like quake... my concern is that people from the quake community will move over to rage instead of returning to another quake related game, it just thins us out even more.

there's no need for gtv nowadays. Streams are good enough, but I know they weren't when ql was released.

"cpma" is not a gametype. If you want cpm you can always go back to q3 to play with the 16 remaining players, but also it could be almost implemented in QL if id finally fixes the aircontrol command.

based on the leaked 31th may update, which has some things not included in the official one.

obviously the official update is at least 90% of what was leaked.
