how is the NA scene?

We had some great 6v6 and 7v7 CA games going yesterday for a little while. Other than that, all I saw was a little dueling.

I'm not *HUGE* into Warsow (I honestly prefer Quake), but from the looks of it the game could see some growth. If you want to check out the community, I'd head to that IRC channel and/or post in the forums and ask some of the more experienced players who can answer your question much better than I can. :)

I played 5 duels yesterday (I'm in NA). I managed to win one and came close to winning another.

It's a pretty different from any quake game imo. The +special movement is so important and if you aren't moving fast you're toast.

There were only two servers I could find in NA. I don't know why there are so few of them. Luckily I pinged 60-70 on them.

Tried the .7 beta after hearing weak/strong ammo was removed.

Love the movement, the dodge/dash is awesome for movement and combat, the game feels a lot more balanced than promode.

Can't help but feeling this is the game everyone should of been playing after the Q3 era. It's fresh, new, good support, and free. If there's a decent active NA duel scene I'll definitely play when I can :)

Duel, Bomb, CA and Instagib are the most popular ones. CTF and TDM aswell as FFA are pretty much dead.

CTF pickups are quite popular, if someone adds ctf more ppl will, so just go for it and you'll have a game

QL got huge publicity when the game was released out of Beta. It got so many players in it was impossible to get in through the queues, actually.

Not out of beta, but out of closed beta. When it was finally "released", there was nothing in terms of promotion.
Result of that early publicity was more than a million QL accounts, which simply shows what opportunity id cleverly decided to miss.

Just played some CTF and I really enjoyed it. Will be interesting to see where it goes from here.

btw it's called 1.0 because lots of devs will leave the project once they do bug fixes (lets say 1.1)

That doesn't mean other devs won't continue it. I left the development of wsw after 0.6, and see, here's 1.0. It's open source. It will go as far as the comunity takes it.

Aye -- and I talked to some of the devs and they're really just *exhausted* and want to take a break and kick back into maintenance mode rather than full-on development of the game. I was fearing drama, but this is totally fine.

I just played a round of CA. Best server I could find gave me a ping of 87 which seemed to be playable. On quakelive I try to only play on servers that give me 65 or lower ping.

I wasn't very good with the dash thing, but even leaving that out I still dominated most of the players just using lg and rail. Rail seems to be gimped a little bit in that its not instantaneous, or possibly it was just my lag.

I was miffed that there was no UI way to invert the mouse, I had to do /set m_pitch -0.022 after some googling.

The graphics are ok, I don't really care about graphics in these sorts of things. It didn't seem like strafe jumping really worked, I guess you are supposed to use the dash thing. I did see some guy doing PQL style air-control though.

Given a choice between quakelive and this I would choose quakelive any day, but possibly this is a good game to play with non-quake people at a lan party of some sort.

Mostly this just seems like a quake3 mod to me. I don't understand what took 7 years.

That's what I'll be doing.

Some oldschoollers seem to have trouble mixing the "nerfed" bunnyhopping with strafejumping. I never had a big deal with that myself, maybe it's the way each one strafejumps, but it's not unfrequent. Anyway, you can disable the nerfed bunnyhopping by setting cg_oldmovement 1.

You should also do some adaptation yourself and not start running with a strafe but with a dash forward. Don't get me wrong, you can start with a strafe, but it's a slower way to do it.

As far as I know there's a noobified movement system similar to xonotic set as default. cg_oldmovement 1 for the classic style.

You can do strafejumping with cg_oldmovement 0 aswell.

The "newmovement" basically allows you to move around like in Painkiller, just press +forward and +moveup and you'll accellerate. You also can turn corners by moving the mouse.
The oldmovement differs from the new one in the point that you actually have to strafe-jump in order to accellerate in straight lines (+forward and left or right) and you have to release +forward and only press the left or right key in order to go around corners.

The dash/walljump adds even more possibilities to the movement, like instant 90/180°-turns without loosing speed. Also you can slide up on railings and raps by pressing the dash-key when landing on the ramp.

Another thing is the automatic bunnyhop. Since 0.5 you only have to press down the jump key and hold it in order to continue jumping, like this new players can go up stairs and ledges without loosing speed. If you don't like that feature you can turn it off via a "cg_"-command (can't remember the exact name).

They aren't. Don't do as much dmg but the knockback makes up for it.

rockets are way faster than in quake, and the knockback is quite high

Feature-wise this is a great release, gameplay-wise (for duel anyway) it's still a horrible mess.

They decided to get rid of the weak/strong ammo system, which I know a lot of people hated, but in doing so they didn't even bother balancing the game around that change.

As it stands, the game is a laughing stock for duel.

Don't know the game seems pretty balanced to me and most of the duelers out there (except for Huksi` who is whining about it every time he can).

There is a reason (actually, many many reasons) why Warsow is not and has not ever been taken seriously as a competitive duel game and/or alternative to Quake. Part of me will always love Warsow because it's the game that got me into duel, but I have come to realize that its gameplay is nowhere near as solid or balanced as Quake.

The only problem i have is the crosshairs. Only the cross is sharp enough but when you up the size it looks like a blurry mess :P

Ok, here is a zip with my config and the crosshairs I've made myself for the game.

Just extract the .pk3-file into your Warsow 1.0/basewsw dirrectory. The crosshairs will replace the old ones.

Set them ingame via chosing.

Crosshair 1 is the + chrosshair. Use size 24 for it to be sharp. It looks like the QL + crosshair in size 32 or something around that.

Crosshair 2 is a circle with a thick black border (not comepletely solid has a bit of transparency). Basically looks like crosshair 11 in QL. If you use it, again use size 24 it will look more like 32.

Crosshair 3 are four brackets that create something like an octagon. Here I tried to create the QL crosshair 15 but failed a bit. Same as with the others use size 24 to get a sharp yet big crosshair.

Looks and feel great, but as it is right now I don't find it a fun game.

I played it all weapons ffa yesterday for a few games. I actually like the antilag thing, makes it playable well over 60 ping. The game balance did not seem too duel friendly but its quite fun for CA/FFA.

IDK where did you get such idea, only pg uses antilag of the projectile weapons.

Has anything changed with the antilag (or similar things that might feel like antilag to the uneducated) since the previous version? 1.0 feels heaps better on a moderate ping than .7 did, and I even find 1.0 playable on a ridiculously high ping which I wouldn't have even tried before. (I haven't noticed any annoyances playing against high pingers, btw.)

i tried it today,the game look nice and it is obvious that the Dev team worked really hard in this game,Good job !

i had a problem playing tho,every like 3 seconds the mouse doesnt work for an another 3-5 seconds but i still can strafe and the gun keep firing and/or the player keep jumping,i got rid of this just by playing in a lower resolution,also the server browser do not want to refresh,i just had to close and restart the game jump to make the server browser work again.

Everyone should at least have a look at the changelog, because some of the most common complaints have been addressed. Weapons have been rebalanced, and the tiered ammo system removed. Lots of little bugs and annoyances from previous versions are gone too.

Just downloaded and tried a few duels vs bots. Quite fun, I think the movement feels a bit sluggish, but I think that is because I havent really learned it yet. Will definitely play more.

When you will have the hang of the movement in Warsow, then suddenly movement of every other game starts to feel sluggish.

And don't even try to play QuakeWorld match right after Warsow - I tried and felt like I was an old lady walking with crutches.

Yea, I noticed how fast and smooth it can go. It's just that I need to learn to always make it that fast and smooth, not one short sequence per match.

What's the diff between old and new movement?

Old Movement is cpmish, New Movement is like Painkiller's, you gain speed by strafejumping.
Pretty much everyone uses old movement

The main difference betwen OLD and NEW is ForwardBunny. ForwardBunny is a trick when you gain speed by pressing +forward and +moveup, like in Painkiller. But there is no other noticeable difference! So you can even play with new movement, just don't use +forward for jumpin', that's all =)

Installed it, played 1 game; the netcode is really strange, with 40 ping I felt like I play on USA server.
Also, server browser just stopped showing any servers after 1st match (just shows one empty "warsow server"), so cannot play anymore.
Not a good first impression.

make sure that you turn of vsync in gfx-card's settings. Couse your feeling of 40ping is really strange. I usually plays with 75-80, and it a lot better than QL's 40-50. Also check cl_extrapolate 1 (if i remember correctly).

UI bug is known, i hope devs will fix it soon.

i like the game, but seems like my 50 ping is too high for normal playing ;(

In W§W 130 ping is playable, so trust me you can make it :D!

I only played it a tiny bit. But I already like it much better than any Quake I've played (which I also like).

However, I am extremely dishearted to see that virtually nobody is playing this game.

I do not think 'telling your friends' is enough. Nor is the reddit post (though that was a good effort).

Warsow needs to be on Steam!

Here's a thread about it, steam has always tried to make some kind of profit out of the game, so that's the reason why the devs didn't want to put it in steam. They have contacted them but always the same answer.

Actually the numbers for unique players per day are not so much estimates as they are stats :-).

5000 players a day, 22 sign ups (including devs) in its biggest tournament in years (0.7/1.0 announcement). Yeah right.

We had constant 180-200 players playing Warsow yesterday evening.

Also during Christmas and Summer cups in 0.5/0.6 there were 45+ sign-ups. The 0.7 Beta Cup was just at an unfortunate date. The Rickrollers Duel Cup 1.0 allready has 15 sign-ups and it's ony announced since several hours.

You know, the big problem is that Steam owners want actually to get money from the games in there, so they are not so interested in offering stuff for free.

Last time i played Warsow it was version 0.6, this release feels so much more polished. The new menu style kicks ass!

I have problems running the game in fullscreen. When i check the box in the graphical menu and apply i'm still in windowed mode. A manual change of r_fullscreen 1 and vid_restart doesn't work either (puts back to 0 automatically). Anyone else got problems with this?

Make sure you select a resolution, at a mhz rate and colordepth your screen supports. You're probably missing one of the three.

I'm using my LCD's native resolution: 1680x1050 @ 120 hz (supported, it's a 2233rz) and 32 bit. Works fine on QL, CPM also on WSW 0.6... Did some searches on the Warsow forums and found similar issues, so it seems i'm not the only one :o

Have you tried another resolution or the same resolution with vid_displayfrequency 0 (so it uses your desktop one). Maybe there's some bug that gets triggered with that precise setting (i would be on ui bug) but you can use another one in the meantime.

Hmm... if it's some ui bug try setting it all in console:

No success, still resetting :< i guess it's playable like this though... atleast it's filling up most of my screen @ 1680, but those edges are annoying. Hope there will be fix.

I think i fixed it. I went into the config.cfg and saw something strange: r_colorbits '2' instead of 32 like i chose in the graphics menu. Fullscreen works now... my guess is there's something wrong when you check '32' in the menu, it translates to '2' in the config.

Here we have the potential fate of Reborn: A very good game, not as charismatic as Quake, that gets a certain very underground following and that's all.

And which, without proper funding, takes many years to look and feel solid.

Oh, and that's a best case scenario. Remember PMX? Getting on with this kind of project is hard.

I hadn't played this game in about 2 years and played it a bit yesterday. It's really a great game now. Polished, feels really good. Really wish more people would play the game.

Dansen. The Timer changes when you pick up one of the major items (GA, YA, RA, MH). It will flash with the color of the item you currently picked up. For example if you pick up RA it will flash red. In warm-up mode there is the problem that the color just stays on the clock, in real play the clock will go back to white again.

This feature should help players time items in battle-situations since they will automatically look at the flashing clock thus seeing the time of pickup.

For MH the timer will turn purple again if you picked up a MH and it has expired thus reminding you of the fack that the 20 seconds respawn timer for the next MH just has started.

Before the new release there was a website hosted by crizis where you could download all the demos from his servers (serverside demos with both povs and float-cam support) but currently the site is down and I don't know where to find the serverside demos atm. You could register on warsow.net and just open a toppic where you kindly ask for players to provide demolinks or a site with all the serverdemos.

You can go to warsow.net, get any player profile and see their list of matches and click on a match to download the demo. If you used the installer you can just double click the demo file (or open it if the browser asks what to do with it, That depends on the browser).

Vo0 played some years ago. Also reload used to play W§W before changing to QL. Fox and noctis could probably do decent in W§W too, since they've both played CPMA.

The top Quake 3/4/Live players probably won't play the game since it's so different to the game they are used to.

They would have to learn the movement from scratch, the weapon combos and usage, the timing (for MH at least), the positioning and the maps. They only are so dominant in QL because they have over 10 years of experience in Quake.

Don't get me wrong they wouldn't be complete noobs in Warsow either, because of their raw aim and good brain-game but they still would get beaten by mid-high skilled players and really stomped by players like GoReY, hyrveli, KeRpaL or dkw.

You know that Vo0 was only medicore in Quake 3 Arena and Quake Live. He really showed his dominance in Painkiller and CPMA which are as far from vq3/ql as President Assad is from democracy.

No normal Q3A/Q4/QL pro ever played Warsow on a serious level and none of them has beaten any of the top Warsow players. Warsow isn't Quake, it requires a whole different approach to the game and it also requires way more raw-aim and movement-skill than Quake. Sure if rapha would switch to Warsow and start playing it seriously he would become a top-tier player in less time than if I would do the same but he still would struggle hard at the beginning.

cpm is quake. Painkiller isn't that different, because there's always been the same aspects involved in being a good dueler, therefore it's a transferable skill from game to game just like being good at dota1 then dominating LoL/HoN/etc., or q2 to quake3, pk, quake4, doom3, sm, ql, qw, cpm, ut2k3, avp2, and every single one without exceptions (same players winning).

Also warsow players are......well, not very good in popular games, to say the least, and that's because wsw's gameplay is way too simple due to weapon and movement balance (as nzro explained in other thread).
Moreover, just by watching games it's easy to tell they aren't remotely comparable to QL players level. It's like watching lets say a ut2k4 match: it's clear top players know what they are doing just based on duel basics, even without acknowledging specific aspects of the game like using shield. That doesn't happen with warsow.

And you say Vo0 was a mediocre vanilla quake3 player, which he wasn't but not top32 material.
Thing is "mediocre Vo0" stomped in warsow and you know it. Imagine what a top player could have done there, or still can because quake3/QL level has increased a lot.
They won't since your game with 22 players is dead (sign ups at the 0.7/1.0 official announcement duel tournament, with prizes. Discounting devs and no shows it maybe is 16)

1. CPMA with cpm-physics is nowhere comparable to vq3. That's a fact. The movement is different, the weapons behave different, the items are different, so are the maps. Reffer to the hundreds of Nzr0 posts here on ESReality where he explains in detail, why exactly CPM is superior than vq3.

Painkiller isn't even a bit like Quake. The movement is completely different (don't have strafejumping, only forward bunnyhopping and if you press left/right you will instantly move to that dirrection with same speed not like in Q3A/CPM). The weapons are different with their two firemodes and the fact that there is no real Plasma Gun and Rail Gun. The armors are tiered and not ticking down. Mega spawning every minute. I could go on for hours about differences to Quake. Only thing they have in common is that they both are FPS and in both 1vs1 is the most aknowledged gametype. Appart from that two different worlds.

2. Warsow is not a Quake II mod, you just have showed that you know shit about this game yet again. The core of QFusion is the old idTech2 but it has been tweaked into oblivion so now it has nothing to do with the original one.

3. Real reason for Warsow players not making good appereances in Quake is, that they are playing Warsow and not Quake. They just don't care for Quake and enjoy their own game. The reason why Quake pros won't be instantly good at Warsow is the same. They didn't play Warsow for hundreds or thousands of hours so they will have to learn all the basics from scratch. Just as simple as that.

4. Medicore vq3 Vo0 and Top 1 CP/PK Vo0 are two different things. He knows how to move fast and react fast in Warsow since the movement of it is simillar to CPM/PK. But he doesn't (or rather didn't) know how to play smart in vq3. Vanilla Quake requires different skills from you than Warsow does.

jesus christ ProoF, i've played both cpm, pk++ and warsow and they are all very alike. warsow is my all time favourite, and is the one i've stuck with over the years, i love it more than anything, but you are clearly over exaggerating how complex and hard it is compared to other games which works almost exactly the same. not hating on you, its good that your are defending warsow.

I'm not saying it is overly complex or hard in comparison to lets say Quake Live. Yet it's different from it and that's why a high-skilled QL player only will be medicore when he starts playing Warsow and not highskilled like megaman3 states/hopes. Ofcourse the basics are the same, move around the map, collect items, outsmart and kill your oppoenent, but the rest (weapons, items, movement, maps, tactics) is different so you will have to learn them first before being as good as you were in your old game.

my 2 cents

After playing a bit, my opinion is this:
1. No tutorial for beginners, especially for the movement system? Developers have very strange criteria of what should be "release" version.
2. Seems to be only 1 map
3. Not enough visual/audio accents on important things. Hard to notice projectiles, little damage indication, dmg sounds are weak, and announcer voice not very pronounced
4. HUD elements very small with important information barely noticeable, also not editable
5. Server browser is crap, no way to filter/search/sort servers
6. Tons and tons of very poorly thought out logic/design, just cannot list it all because it's almost in every element, whatever you do or click. Who needs news as first page? Why double click on title of servers list launches game? Why I join game as spectator? Why I have to press esc key additional time after join server to join a team? Why I can't add server to favourite in esc menu? Etc, etc, just dumbest things everywhere you look. Pretty obvious that there are no designers in developers team.

The gameplay eventually seems to be nice, but there are too many obstacles on the way to finally enjoying it.

Only items 1 and 5 are somewhat true, everything else is pure bullshit.

You seem to be a only 1 gametype (CA) player, since it's the only gametype that is basically played in 1 map. FFA is using a rotation of... idk... 12 maps? Bomb uses a rotation of 6 maps. CTF is frequently played in 3 or 4 maps. Duel has no less than 7 maps used frequently, maybe more. And when I talk about rotations or frequency of use it's because those maps are not skept in the rotation nor played once in a while in CTF/Duel, they are really played. Map darwinism did its work during Warsow beta versions and the maps which couldn't make the cut were removed or improved.

Warsow scriptable HUDs are the most editable in a game I have ever seen. I haven't seen all games in the world, of course, but I've seen al quakes and their mods.

Also, I do not have a hard time spotting projectiles (esp with r_drawflat and minimal gfx), you might try to tweak for example the cg_rocketTrail cvars if the rockets are too small for you :p. I think it's sad we don't have WHEAT announcer anymore...
4. You can create a brandnew hud from the ground up. Also, there are a few different HUDs that ship with 1.0 (including ones with BIG NUMBERS), check them out in options/profile (or user thingy, dont recall).

6. Sounds like we've found a new designer -> you ;-). If you care for these issues and would like to discuss your thoughts, write them up and post them on the forums (if however you don't want to discuss it, your post is fine ;-) ).

Of course I understand that there are many maps, but I approach to this as just a semi-casual gamer who would only research the game deeply only after he had been attracted to it enough to become a regular player. So I open game, choose 1st server that I see in gametype that I prefer (ca), and for me it always had the same map every time.
3. About hitsounds, for me it wasn't instant understanding that those sounds are actually hit sounds and not some weird environment noise that happens sometimes. And as for the announcement voice, it just feels like its some teammate in skype, basically sounds not "official" enough, whatever it means.
About damage indication, I mean not the HUD indication that I am taking damage, but how projectiles look and visually behave in fighting. I.e. I see some things flying from my weapon, but there is not very clear visual feedback when those projectile hit something, there is not much visual distinction between projectile hitting enemy and just some wall, basically I don't see well that I am doing damage to enemy, I can only "deduce" it because projectile enters his body.
People tend to get accustomed to things like these and easily recognize what's happening after some experience, but from my perspective of player who saw the game first time ever, the weapon shooting and all the stuff that happens in combat is not displayed clear enough to be instantly intuitively understood.
4. If I open menu and don't see "Edit HUD" option, for me it means it's not editable. I understand that somewhere there is a way to create a HUD, but again, it requires "deep" research before becoming a regular player which is not a normal order of things for most players.
6. Unfortunately I have enough time only to whine about problems in moderately arrogant way, but can't offer any well thought ideas of how to fix the stuff.

Well rockets are 1200 ups and plasma is 2400 ( 2600? ) ups........
So yeah I think the hit boxes should be slightly bigger and those projectiles should be slower like 950 ups rockets with 85-90 damage and 2100 ups plasma with 17-18 damage.

And lots of servers are running sv_pps at 20 so yucky responsiveness should be 40-62 ( 62 which is the cap on the client pps preferably ) also client pps by default is 40.

At first, I thought it looked pretty cheesy. I still think it does in many ways, mainly in the characters and in the overdone Tokyo-metropolis style in some of the arenas.

I love the movement though, it flows well and wall-jumping adds a whole new dimension to gameplay. I managed to learn the movement system very fast, and yet you can tell it can take a while to master which is good. It combines the best parts of Quake and Unreal it seems. It's unfortunate that it doesn't get too many players though, would like to see this get more promotion. I might consider doing some mapping for it in between UE3 for fun - especially since it has a great, clean minimalist aesthetic which I'm a fan of.

(If any devs are reading: Do I need to get a new entity .def file for the latest version of Warsow? Or does it give me all new entity definitions just by directing Radiant to the 1.0 version? Want to make sure it's setup correctly is all)

EDIT: In NetRadiant the texture packages don't load at all... in other versions they do. NetRadiant is the most up-to-date one so I want to stick with that, but it acts like the texture folders have nothing in it, even though I gave it the game directory and everything... anyone know what's wrong? Thanks.

Radiant isn't a so good option. It comes with an "outdated" (for Warsow needs) q3map2 compiler.

Netradiant should be the choice and should work straight ahead without problems. It comes with built in entities.def and built in compile menus to use all the Warsow lighting improvements.

I'm surprised by you saying Netradiant isn't working. I did collaborate with Netradiant while I was on Warsow devteam (until wsw0.6) so unless something broke since then it should work perfect.

Arrow points to where the textures should be. Interestingly, other games like Quake II and III have the textures show up just fine... and I'm sure I set the game directory correctly when I was asked. Also, other Radiant branches like GTKRadiant 1.5 work fine as well, but 1.5 is extremely buggy compared to NetRadiant, locking up during movement and I hear it's prone to crashes.

OK, I think I know what's going on, and it's probably Warsow's fault. You need the shaderlist.txt.

Do this:
- Go to Warsow install dir/basewsw and open data0_10pure.pk3
- Extract from the pk3 /scripts/shaderlist.txt
- Put it inside Warsow/basewsw/scripts (you have to create the scripts dir)

It should work now (I can't test myself)

I checked my basewsw directory. It already had a shaderlist.txt in a scripts folder, but I went ahead and replaced it with the one from the .pk3 (they seem to have different file sizes) and unfortunately I still get the same issues. Both files strangely seem to have different data due to the different file sizes.

Ok, I am lost now. The symthoms are all the typical of the shaderlist mising.

Try putting it in the "other" basewsw dir (if you put it at install, put it at user (%APPDATA%), or viceversa), also try locating inside Netradiant/games the warsow.game and put it in there where the entities.def is. If I had it installed I could be of more help, but I don't :/

Okay, I fixed it. It turned out I accidentally had the game path set to go all the way basewsw rather than just the Warsow 1.0 directory itself. I was thinking I had it set there because I was in that folder at the time, but it selected another folder, thus causing problems. Apologies for the inconvenience.
