edit: sorted the list out a bit and separated my all time personal favourite must-watch 10/10 highly recommendable films from the rest

Really solid list with a few exceptions:

Falling Down -- good idea, but only has a few good moment
300 -- I know it's a faithful adaptation, but it's mostly just slow-mo visuals and some dudes in loin cloths
The Abyss (Director's Cut) -- Theatrical was better and less preachy
Jurassic Park 3 -- Second was better than third; Third just got campy
Chronicles of Riddick -- Way too ambitious for budget and 2 hour length, Vin Disel is campy throughout (Pitch Black was far superior)
28 Weeks Later -- first 2 minutes only decent part of the film
Skyline -- That campy sci-fi movie set in LA?
Equilibrium -- Action movie masquerading as a thoughtful dystopian scifi. Missed much of the point of 1984.
Crash -- Too dramatic, preachy
Bram Stoker's Dracula -- If referring to the Coppola version, great style but terrible casting and adaptation
Gladiator
Dune -- I actually really like this movie, but it butchered the books
The Boondock Saints -- Witty dialogue, okay action, but generally overrated

I think you're missing the point. This isn't a debate about what's better than what, or what flaws X film has, what's campy or what's preachy... (which is all subjective anyway), it's just a thread where people recommend their personal favourites... and my list is by no means complete nor should it be considered as a definintive guide to the best movies just because it's a long list. It's just a half-assed and unfinished list of movies that I enjoyed personally for whatever reason, some more than others.

I will say that all of them should be watched at least once though, even Skyline.

I've updated the list with a few you mentioned, although Taxi Driver and Fight Club are already there. Not sure how equilibrium ended up on my list btw, I didn't actually enjoy it lol

Funny Games -- original or remake in English?

Never seen German one, but since it was a shot-by-shot remake, what difference does it make?

In a different director's hand, the difference can be night&day. Take the original La Femme Nikita and compare to the shot-by-shot remake starring Bridget Fonda called Point of No Return
In addition to a nearly 40 percent drop in its Tomato Rating, the remake lost so much of its style and lead character menace.

It was the same director that did both Funny Games: Micheal Heneke.

Actually get them to watch it and they'll probably enjoy it.

First time I saw it was with a group of friends and is one of mine's all time favorites. Still doesn't mean it's a top pick for group watching, in general, because in this day and age it requires a bit of endurance and open-mindness to watch something of that description.

Funny thing is seven samurai and the hidden fortress are considered to be some of the best Kurosawa movies ever, but what I want to re-watch right now is not them but Ikiru, one of the 'most boring' of his and certainly not something that can watched for the first time in groups.

You might be right (judging from what type of movies are popular these days). But I was pretty young when I saw Seven Samurai for the first time and it blew my mind so I think it could probably be enjoyed by a lot of people who don't necessary think of themselves as a cinephile.

Don't forget Ran as his most "epic" film. That movie is worth the watch alone for the insane battle scenes and gorgeous cinematography. Definitely his most visual movie, in my opinion.

You'd really give Children of Men a 10/10? It's a great movie and all, don't get me wrong, but there are two things that would hold me back from giving it a perfect rating - the scene with the soldiers and the baby towards the end, and the ending itself - I found it very lazy and sappy. I dunno, thought all the massive build-up could have been used for something better than the well-expected mystery salvation boat (I'll freely admit I'm a fan of unhappy/ambiguous/twist endings).

I have to say tho, Clive Owen and Michael Caine steal the show and run the fuck away with it, they're so god-damn good in it, it makes my eyes water.

It was hopeful and helped ease up a bit on the oppressive nature of the movie, I certainly can understand why they went that way, it does contrast well with the rest of it, but I was expecting something a bit more morose and thoughtful. To me it made the rest of the experience a little bit empty, like the entire message has been diluted. Just my preference I suppose.

The line from that movie which messed with my head was when Kirsten Dunst (played the gf in older Spiderman) told her sister "We're alone," that life doesn't exist anywhere else in the universe. "Nobody will miss us," she says.

Dunst's character was already a little disturbing, and she delivered those lines with a cold and almost supernatural credibility.

hahaha yeah it was awesome. but still.. i noticed a few things in that movie.
like you said it's all about us being alone 'n' all but she knew throughout the movie exactly what's going to happen. she even said so herself. it was especially noticeable when she got the number of balls exactly right.
this kinda leads to believe she's gettin this info from somewhere, almost supernatural. this contradicts with the overall point of the movie like you said. also let's not forget that the name of the horse was Abraham who is considered the first human being on Earth and the "father" of all humans. maybe it's some kind of symbolism.

Won't list the ones I rated 8, although they are pretty good as well, but there's too much of them. But I would recommend any of the movies I did list. I'm not picky when it comes to films, so it has all kinds of genres, old and new, Hollywood and artistic, American and international.

I think the weirdest pick on my list is Scooby-Doo which is basically a family movie, plus I think it has the lowest imdb rating (4.7) out of those. It does have to do with Scooby Doo being my favorite cartoon in my childhood, and after the live action movie came out in 2002, I watched it like 15 to 20 times and never got bored of it. As a Scooby Doo fan, I couldn't imagine a better live action movie than that.

Amélie is like the cheesiest film to ever come out of France, and the worst depiction of Paris I have ever seen. In the film, Montmartre and the tour Eiffel are fucking next to each other

Seems OK, Mads Mikkelsen is surely as interesting as Anthony Hopkins, but different, the FBI protagonist seems pretty awkward, but in my understanding he was written that way. IMHO the future show heavily depends upon how much the arch is presented, because I've heard they want to stay somewhat close to the source. As long as it's not a random murder every week that has no big meaning, I guess it will be good.

Top 3s are stupid. There are too many good movies in each genre to be able to select three that would be better than all the others - it's a pointless exercise. With a list like mine, you're free to browse through the titles, look at their imdb page, and select which one you'd like to give a try to. No shit you're not going to watch 50 movies now - the entire point of the list is that you can come back to it later and find something else to watch.

Anyway, I also liked The Mist, though it has one of the most frustrating movie endings of all time. I was so mad at the protagonist, I was pulling my hair out.

I read the book first and thought the movie was lacking the amosphere and all, but it was about ok / little below avarage until the ending scene. That just killed it. Probly should mention the ending in the book is very different.

Oh god yes. Perhaps not quite the best spy drama movie I've seen (probably wouldn't be the popular choice but I hugely favour Spy Game in that category) but it's an exceptional film. The pace is super slow but the atmosphere, dialogue and acting... wonderful stuff.

I watched Intouchables (French), and The Beaver (USA) recently, great films :)

Would also recommend La Jetee (French, on youtube), Water (India), Monsieur Lahzar (Canada), A Seperation (Iran), The Seventh Seal (Sweden) ... All are awesome stories, with great scripts, and acting.

Jodorowsky's Dune, after reading some of the news articles yesterday about the passing of H.R.Giger I noticed he'd been in this documentary about this guy who had a vision of creating a Dune movie... before David Lynch even started his. It's an excellent documentary, Jodorowsky was clearly very passionate about the project and managed to get an excellent team together. H.R. Giger and Chris Foss were doing the artwork for it. Towards the end they show some references from the amazing picture board (whatever its called) that were very similar to scenes in various movies that came out after this project died.

Well worth a watch and if only they would release the script/story board that he had created into a book!

edit: oh and Dan O'Bannon that wrote a lot of content for the aliens films and video games.

Very good animated film based on a very good graphic novel.

From Nicolas Winding Refn, who recently wrote and produced: "Only God Forgives" with Ryan Gosling, are the following must-sees - it's astonishing it isn't in any of your lists, most of you probably know them already, but they really are a must see, preferably in the original-Version (danish) with subtitles:

It's the European Pulp Fiction, without copying anything, "likable" funny characters, many improvised Scenes, superb acting and a really own style.

You should watch Pusher, if you like it you can go ahead and watch II and III, they are equally good - make sure not to watch the english Remake of Pusher, but the original!
If you want to see more of Winding Refn, beware, because other films differ much from the Pusher series, for example "Only God Forgives" and "Valhalla Rising" have few dialogues and are much more focused on aesthetics; I like them very much, but they are special and definitely not a must-see; they have a bad imdb score as well, because of the more experimental approach and a lack of a traditional narrative.

I forgot "Drive" with Ryan Gosling is also from him, it has a much better imdb-score, it has also a advertisement-like aesthetic like "Only God Forgives" though more relating characters and more of a traditional plot. Though I didn't like it, because of the photoshopped-aesthetics.
