Although its always good to see CPMA defended, at the end of the day it's just one of hundreds of FPS that people could play. By all means, spread the word about CPMA but ultimately it's best to just let people play what they enjoy. The decade of bickering hasn't bolstered any games player count.

As for those replying to Jamerio specifically, you really don't have to defend the game from him.

He makes a couple of unsupported claims that CPMA players are somehow worse players. I'm not entirely sure what game they're supposed to be worse at. I'm happy to concede that bunny hopping, rocket prediction and flick rails are probably bad habits if you want to play CoD but.. we're not playing CoD. They're pretty good habits to have while playing CPMA.

He then quite shamelessly uses someone's suicide to try and bolster his argument (which is morally dubious at best). The thread he linked contains nothing but respect from 'our' players and I find it difficult to believe that his choice of first person shooter (whatever it may have been) would have anything to do with his death.

Additionally, I would like to extend his friends and family our deepest sympathies on behalf on the CPMA development team.

Finally, he pulls out the thinly veiled emotional manipulation employed mainly by parents - the "I'm not going to stop you but I will let you know how very disappointed I will be in advance".

In my opinion playing the best opponents you can get is the best way to get better, other people subscribe to gradually moving up the ladder. But if you wanna get better one thing is for sure - you have to play, and that means people, not bots. Add up bravely and just use your head - I've had newbs who can't shoot and move who were better teammates than people who can.

I played around with PQL today. It's alright I guess, but it's nothing like CPM physics.

Don't worry, there are some beginners on CPMA, they don't show themself that much, that's all.

Just come around on channels Nzr0 gave earlier and ask for low skill duels in the channel, even good players can help you.

You can ask me sometimes as well, I'm still not that good at duel, so it should be playable for you. Playing CPMA is a very good experience, community is great as long as you try to live with them, and this is what makes CPMA even better.

And if you try to play something else than duel, like CTFS, NTF etc, maybe you can train the game in some easier and more pleasant ways.
If you keep the faith and continue to train almost every day, in a few months you can start to have a playable level (but sill being raped by the most).

For your movements, train b0_beta6 and cos1_beta7b.

I realize duel is the hardest game mode for a beginner because you can't get carried. That's also why I chose to 'main' it. If I make a mistake in duel and my opponent is worth his salt, he will punish it. That makes it harder to develop bad habits, because they get punished more often and harder in 1v1 than in team play. Or at least, that's my theory.

You can't progress playing with players that are really better than you, you will just quickly get raped and you will barely be able to pick up items. No place for timing, area control etc, just trying to survive, or rushing. You won't learn that much.
But playing with someone closer to your skills will force you to use the real 1v1 skills; timing items, having a good aim, prediction, area control etc, because using them is the main way to defeat your opponent.

Play players that beat you, but don't absolutely wreck you. If you can't find them, play players that at least aren't generating a 60+ difference in score. They're out there.

Once you learn basics, you should find you can play a wider range of players. Always play players that are better than you. Even if you beat a player half the time, that doesn't necessarily make you better than him. Only until you feel like you won't break a sweat no matter what goes on in a game and you consistently beat players do you know you're better than them.

I don't like the idea of playing the strongest players you can find unless you're doing it just for the hell of it and don't really care about gaining anything. About the only thing you'll gain is knowledge of spawns and where an opponent will come for you. While this is an alright skill to understand, at your level you probably won't understand it with great depth.

Watch demos/youtube vids of strong players. Both for learning and to understand what you should strive for. Also understand that for most players, it will take some time to obtain that level of play. You can't force top-level play in a few days.

I remember i was grinding alot in the beginning and in the end i didn't gain anything from it. I was showing some friends this site last year, we were laughing over a takeaway at the claims that some of the sites more damaged users thought I was lying about who I was and theories behind it because I said I worked on a video game.

Well that explains your behaviour then... the fact that people who know you in real life also visit ESR dictates how you behave "in front of them" while commenting here, either because you've specifically told them to check out your latest thread hijacking, or just on the off chance that they might be lurking here anyway.

I was originally perplexed how you could care so much about what random people on an online forum thought about you, but now I see that isn't what's happening at all. I now understand you don't actually care about what people on ESR think about you... but you care immensly about what your friends in real life think about you.

What's really happening is you're simply trolling 99% of the time just to prove to your IRL friends that you are capable of winding up everyone on ESR, and you don't necessarily believe everything you say and neither are all your statements facts, you simply say whatever will provoke the most reactions (comment #1 in this thread being a good example... even mentioning Dezje... pretty low blow!).

In fact, hypothetically, winding people up on a gaming forum by pretending to have a BAFTA would in fact provide more lulz with your mates than actually really having a BAFTA. Not to say you don't really have a BAFTA... but now I can't help but think that maybe you are indeed also making this up just for shits 'n' giggles.

In any case, everyone is free to spend their time as they wish, and if you enjoy winding people up on ESR just to impress your mates, then so be it... but it several questions arise:

What kind of person chooses to surround himself with friends like this in real life, people that admire this kind of behaviour? What kind of person goes to such lengths in order to impress or gain the respect of this kind of friends in real life? Do you really enjoy this or has it all kinda got out of control? Do you surround yourself with friends that are considerably stupider than you so you can feel comfortably superior and respected?

I guess we'll never know the answers because everything you say on ESR is potentially just another "wind-up", and neither does it really matter... you don't really care about what we think about you. All that matters to you is what your IRL friends think about you.

There's a CA servers who's crowded almost all the time, you definitely should get there to practice your aim and dick around with the movement. I'd also suggest playing NTF if you can in cpmpickups (could be tough now with the TDM cup approaching)

Find a few players at your level. They can be hard to find sometimes but if you persist and bug people constantly, you can get semi-regular games (I live in NZ and still manage to do this.)

You seem to be on the right track already and the other comments here should help you out.

I don't think you'll need to get "raped for a year or two" to improve but CPMA is designed to have a pretty high skill ceiling. I've been playing for around 10 years and I still find ways to improve my game and discover new tricks on maps I've played thousands of times.

I personally think that the best opponents are challenging without feeling impossible. Find the players who beat you but still leave you feeling like you could win against them with a little work.

One other option that I haven't seen mentioned is to encourage friends from other games to come and play and to learn along side them. Not only is it good for the scene, it changes the nature of the competition from "I want to beat veteran players" to "I want to improve faster than these other noobs". It gives some downtime when losing by 30 frags is draining you.

And remember: the most rewarding games are always the close ones. When you hit overtime in CPMA and your blood starts pumping, winning or losing doesn't matter - you'll genuinely mean the 'gg'.

(And sadly, you are correct about the bots not being great for honing your skills).

tl;dr: Play as much as you can, lose as much as you have to.
