If players are constantly rushing items because they know the times of them, surely you can also show up and prevent that from happening or at least get easy damage because you also know the times? You could also opt to avoid major item areas at their spawn time if you are out of control?

You're forgetting something. Timing is a massive part of dueling, a large part of skill. You're saying remove this aspect entirely, lowering the standards of what makes a good player.

The game is just very limited due to this.

Reflex is based on cpm, where due to map size and the sound system you could hear every armour pickup and keep a rotation of the entire map anyway. Timers barely change anything.

If they'd add timers to a vq3 style game, yes that would 50% of the skill out of the game, but this isn't a vq3 style game.

Well in my experience the situations when you can't hear the pickup, or have some indication based on enemy movement are pretty rare, but I'll be the first to admit my experience in CPM is limited. Could you name common situations where you can't keep the rotation?

cpm15 - ra/lower ya from mh/upper ya and vice versa
cpm24 - lower ya/mh from ra and vice versa
pukka - lg ya from mh and ya to ya(maybe both ya to red as well)
etc...
You no longer have to put yourself at risk to gain information on item pickups and even if you heard the sound of the item pickup doesn't mean you could turn up there at the right second(until you get a good feel for timing by feel) because of the fact that seconds were not displayed on the cpm clock. The item timers on the hud are retarded and take a lot of the depth out of the game, I hope they remove them.

I'm shocked that some people share your opinion. A good analogy would be to give formula 1 cars automatic refueling and then arguing that without pit stops creates more depth of tactics. Utterly ridiculous.

timers dont remove timing by feel, it becomes a choice. Timing by feel drains less resources and focus than constantly checking the timer so it has its advantages when done properly.

That's a terrible analogy. Pitstops are a necessity, it's not fun or particularly challenging for the driver. If pitstops were removed the drivers could push their cars way harder, increasing the skillcap.
Over the past few weeks newborn had to deal with people talking shit about the game pretty much 24/7, that's a lot of pressure for a guy who is handling the entire community side of things alone. Deleting the thread may have been a bit harsh, but considering that it only contained the same circlejerk crap that was in the original thread and IRC for days his reaction is understandable.
Funnily enough it seems like the people who are most annoyed by the timers aren't high skill players but mid skill players who made timing their primary skill and have thus lost their main advantage over new players. That doesn't mean the skillceiling has dropped.
It's also the first change of many which will add in new tactics and skills to acquire, it's early access after all. That also means that the timers aren't final and may be removed again after they have been tested with other gameplay mechanics.

You obviously don't watch F1. At the top level one thing that can really separate teams is their fuel and pit strategy. On top of that it actually gives the drivers a much needed short break.

Yea i bet you can barely contain yourself when the crew performs a pitstop .1 seconds faster than the competition. I'm fairly sure no one has ever become a racecar driver because they are so fascinated with pitstops. Also if there was a way to get rid of pitstops the F1 teams certainly wouldn't think twice about implementing that instantly.

Timers are the worst. It's boring to duel, tdm, and ffa. I was playing before the hud update and the game was really fun, now I can't stand playing it. Making armors and mega global with hud timers removes a lot of mystery from what's going on during the map, so much it creates a really watered down experience. It's not mentally challenging at all, and now this game feels like a glorified version of Clan Arena. I saw a few duel cups being streamed, and it wasn't interesting to watch two players battle over armors that both players know the exact spawn, every single time. 

Honestly is duel even fun when you start to have stuff like this on  your hud? How is TDM or anything fun when everyone knows every spawn?

Newborn implemented a new hud system which is really powerful, but unfortunately allows item timers for all players. His interests in this system are part of his plan for the future of the game, so a 'small' 'unimportant' thing like eliminating 50% of the tactics isn't important to him.

Quake 2 railgun had a god awful delay that means you have to predict the shot. And back in those days we played on 100+ ping, so railgun was hard as fuck to use. Even in Q3 baseq3 where 50ms delay was added to it for lulz, railgun was kind of hard.

CPM railgun was easy as fuck and quakelive railgun is what you are describing, point and click bullshit.

I saw his post, it wasn't anything new but it also wasn't that bad. Deleting it is an asshole move, better to post a message saying something like "we've already seen this discussion, link to the massive thread here ", then lock the topic. As a new user to various games I've posted new threads on old topics because to me they were new and I wasn't aware of the previous massive threads on them. Deleting posts is a bad trend, much better to move/lock things. People who are taking time to write and post about issues care about the game no matter if it's a rehash or not. It is not wise to make these people mad.

I also feel the timer issue isn't completely discussed in full. For instance timers make most sense in duel. Once they are being used in FFA/TDM/CTF/etc they get even more nutty. Not only do these maps have many more items to control/time but as these modes are even more chaotic than duel so more "skill" is lost. How will timers even keep tabs on 10-20 items larger maps have? Why aren't 50 health bubbles timed? Will weapons be timed in TDM if they are longer respawn times? Will timers show items in an enemy CTF base? Timers bring up a lot of unknowns like these. I think timers would fit better in a training/casual type mode than competitive play.

I wrote a reply to newborn about how even if newbies have great info they still can't beat better players. I joked about giving new players sound cues and saying how it still won't let them win but I didn't want that information given away for free.

Reflex still has a long way to go. I'm happy they are experimenting. If they add other gameplay elements perhaps timers will make more sense. I'd actually rather see bigger mechanics changes in the gameplay and a lot more focus on team modes. Timers are mostly an information change without a direct impact on the mechanics. Their recent focus seems to be on duel (timers) and defrag/racing which is mostly solo play.

The devs implemented timers for mh, ra, and ya by default because the game received a new UI scripting system* and someone would have done it anyway, so they gave it to everyone. Any pickup or event that can trigger a UI element can be used to start a timer.

Well you know what they say: If there's grass on the field, play ba.. wait, that's not what we're talking about is it?

this kind of feature pleases new players because you instantly understand one part of the meta game that is hidden behind the rockets and rails, they start to make decisions like, lets go here now, lets challenge for this item then and so on instead of running around the map blindly. It truly helps new players getting into the genre, it kind of removes the steep learning curve for this part of the game.

I also understand that at higher levels of play this feature removes certain aspects of the game, but we already know that the game can host high skilled matches. Testing item timers doesn't mean it will be in the final release of the product necessarily or to some extent, we already see that csgo has casual vs competitive; if you played casual before competitive you will be closer to know what the thing is about.

The only reason why reflex is being bashed from this site is because quakelive is a diva game and their players think turbopixel studios is targeting quake's audience. Reading threads about UT4 in this same site makes me realize it clearly isn't a problem of what game or gameplay is better, most arguments would go "if it was a little bit more like ql it would be ok". Biased logic.

Get over it, reflex is an early access game and it certainly has nothing to do with quake, ID software or bethesda. They are free to test whatever feature they want. I read the OP. You should be messaging the admin before creating a public thread denouncing them. An implication of your post was also how you felt about item timers, but know that it is a well-established issue - in fact they pretty much knew how people would react even before the timers were implemented.

I know it's a bit over the top but in reality when organisations silence people, protests happen. I'm an advocate of free speech whether it's the spoken word or written in a forum. Granted maybe I should have read more into the forum before posting, I checked the main page and didn't see anything. Was about to post this. In other forums, such as boxing forums, where the same identical threads get remade daily, they usually get merged in topics megathreads, and every new thread about the same specific topic gets closed and their comments not deletedl, but moved to the main one.

This made me laugh.

So, you created a topic about timers, apparently missing the other 2 major topics on it, one of which was stickied for a long time.

Both of those threads eventually had to be locked because they degenerated into rage and abuse and every time I logged into the forums, I'd have multiple moderator reports just from those threads with people complaining someone called them a retard (on a post that quoted them calling someone a retard), people reporting every single post that disagreed with their views etc.

Both threads were a complete clusterfuck and really should have been locked far sooner. But I wasn't interested in any of the cries of "DEVELOPER CENSORSHIP!" so the threads ran until it should have been obvious to everyone that there was no value in continuing them.

Then you turned up and posted yet another one, that would have absolutely gone down an identical path. So I of course jumped at the chance to get all dressed up as Hitler and and turn the forums into a brutal dictatorship, stifling any profound insights the same handful of raged players may have had in the week since the last thread.

Yeah, maybe I should have just locked it and let the forums grow increasingly polluted with duplicate discussions and new topics that start with "I'm starting a new topic since the other ones have been locked..." but honestly, I couldn't be fucked. Forum moderation directly eats into development time and we've got an update we want to get out in the next few days.

Well locking them is important. If you browse your forums and are seeing this topic come up more often, it might make you think 'maybe we need to look at this in more detail' etc.

I am sorry for causing such a fuss, but as I said in my opinion deleting peoples point of view or comments leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Especially since I am a supporter of Reflex and want it to succeed.

And just to point out: you have proper forum moderators that don't have anything to do with development, so saying it eats into development time is an overstatement to say the least.

The timer discussion comes up daily, it's not something I'm going to miss. It has my full attention. Twenty forum threads reiterating the same points about it and growing increasingly toxic isn't going to magically mean that changing it requires zero dev time (or that we should disregard any actual testing and just take the path of least whinge).

The current forum moderators are myself, Electro and shooter (all of which are full time Reflex developers) and Fjoggs who is on an extended AFK with other commitments.

So yes, right now, every bit of forum moderation eats into either development time or what little time we've got left for unimportant things like eating, sleeping and doing things to remain sane.

ESR doesn't have free speech. With that said, I would have expected them to at least send you a link to another major discussion on the topic.

In terms of item timers, great feature for new players. There should be different servers with different server configs for new and more advanced players, just like there is skill separation in QL. Little effort to make this technically and logistically possible, but the outcome should be great for the game. I'd really welcome this kind of a timer for lower tier QL servers.

Yes it's such a terrible idea to have a way to ease in new players to the genre. Almost every sport or activity in the real world makes accomodations to new participants to help ease them in, then they transition to the full rules. Most successful video games do this now as well, but oh no, that's not suitable for the "hardcore" (read: isolated, uncompetitive and dead) arena FPS genre where the existing playerbase is only satisfied if new players are raped to the point of not caring and moving on, there's a big future in that right?

But hey, if the 17 people who still play arena FPS are satisfied, brilliant!

It's as if the part where this feature is removed for higher level play is being ignored. Every discipline I know of has formalized introduction and learning methodology that optimizes the learning curve. Sure, my grandfather taught me swimming by throwing me in the water from a cliff and watching my almost drawn, and that was a memorable lesson, but I didn't have much choice. There is no way I could get into a complicated strategy game this way when there are so many flappy bird clones around, and I think we desperately want more players to keep things alive and well, instead of 2 douches who quit and call hacks before the game starts. It's sad, but this is why I've only played a few FFA games in last 6 months, someone is actually playing and not taking shit too seriously.

Not disagreeing with you (I agree about getting new players), but we didn't have these features and we still learned and loved Quake.

My point is that we were all new to Quake once and we didn't need all this support to get into it. it can be brutal for newbs but honestly, in my experience, it made getting better that much more satisfying. Winning my first matches against good players was borderline transcendental.

I don't disagree though that we should want as much new interest as we can get. It seems rather like a necessary evil than something we should be applauding as progress.

The idea is actually a very good idea, but the problem is that reflexs UI system is what makes the item timers possible. So for a server to not allow timers the server would have to restrict players UI capability meaning players would need different huds for different servers which wouldnt work

But the idea of giving low skill servers item timers is on the surface a great idea. It gets them thinking about the objectives of a duel and what they should be doing in order to play effectively.

I have no idea what the protocol is, so don't know if it is possible, or makes sense, but I would try to make the item spawn times solely server based communication. If it's not available, the UI should be able to detect this and hide.

This is a pseudo tech argument. Dunno about reflex's UI system, but it can be changed. If you are a good programmer and want something done then you do it.

Keep the timers for casual noobs.

Remove it for competitive play and give the option for people to remove it from the HUD in normal servers.

I think the reason that people are making threads about it and getting upset over it is they are not getting a response.

Even a 'We'll think about implementing such and such in the future' should serve to avoid future events like this. Also make someone a forum moderator to reply with generic non-answer replies like most other dev studios, people will volunteer for it because it gives them a power trip!

You can't fix the the root cause, only try to manage it as best you can. I've worked in a helpdesk for years and it is an extremely common occurrence for end users not to take it upon themselves to seek information or try to resolve problems themselves, even when that information is a few clicks away. Instead, they want to be able to fire off a quick 30 second email and expect others to do their thinking for them despite a considerable effort to make it easy and worthwhile for the end user to attempt self help.

It wouldn't have taken much for a volunteer forum moderator to reply in Storm's thread and say 'this has already been answered in such and such thread' and lock the topic or something along those lines.

The provider of the service, in this case the dev team, should take it upon themselves not to frustrate their users, which is clearly what has happened here. It's bad for business.

its kind of funny that there is this new topic about race mode where there is actually something new coming up with like 11 replies but everybody now cries about a topic that has been deleted after the 'timers issue' have been talked to death for the last month or so...

its not their issue that you're lazy, like imagine google where everybody goes to their discussion lists and start asking fuckinig questions instead of using the search function.

pr0 tip for you:

there is this magical input in the upper right where is says SEARCH, you need to click it and type "timers" (without quotation marks) than click this green button with magnifier icon. You should get results like this http://www.reflexfps.net/forums/index.php?app...mMainBar=1

Now you dont touch the "by content type" box as you dont really want to find players that are called timers so leave it as it is. To get best results its usually best to click sort by REPLIES and keep the order as DESCENDING

Having an admin close the thread and leave a message with something like this would probably have been better than giving the user a "pr0 tip" and questioning his brain capacities. Although the latter definitely has a higher entertainment value for the rest of us.
