He and I have so much in common, we both speak our minds, he just makes it sound good and im more blunt but I guess thats why im hated more than he will ever be. arQ reminds me of a friend I have, I actually used to work with him. This guy would insult people without them knowing it. I think arQ has this same talent. arQ has always been kind to me, he never tells me to RTFM even when I ask him the noobiest questions that can easily be answered by RTFM. His cpm work is unselfish and he is one of the guys that will go down in Quake history along with zoid and rhea. Good Job on CPM and I hope you continue to be a part of the CPM community atleast until that girl of your dreams comes along :)

Keep in mind, arQon obviously is a good coder and putting much effort into his mod project. Chances are that he pretty much realized what he wanted to see in that mod, so it's logically the ultimate choice for him.

Simply offering your opinion in a brash and confident manner without putting sufficient thought into it's content has little merit. I recently saw a link on the promode site to a web page one or arqon's friends had designed, highlighted by this article's interviewee on the basis that it was written in a no-nonsense, straightforward style with little regard for political correctness, as if that was recommendation enough. I looked at the site out of curiosity and found a tone and outlook strikingly familiar, that of the intransigent shock-jock proffering myopic, inane and illogical explanations of current affairs with little attempt to understand or elaborate on the minutiae of the issues discussed. Whilst noting that the facade of confidence portrayed on the internet is usually just that, his views were delivered with unerring certainty in dogmatic manner, safe in the knowledge that though his views may be controversial, though they may fail to withstand close scrutiny, many would accept them due to the way in which they were expressed. Arqon also appears to be aware that anyone who shouts loud and long enough will eventually have a gaggle of idolaters trailing in his wake.

If all this posturing ultimately led to some substantial reward for the actors it may be forgiveable, admirable even, but sadly the reverse is often true. Whilst the aforementioned sheep will always flock to where they perceive the grass to be greener, countless others will take exception to such strident views. In a recent interview the CPMA player Swelt stated that initially promoders would repeatedly state their view that "VQ3 sux, cpm rox", a view such advocates garnered from similar statements made by the creators of that mod. Instead of recruiting regular Quake 3 players to the new gamestyle, negative associations were immediately formed and countless possible converts were lost. Only yesterday i heard JUDE protest on ESR that he would have been prepared to switch to CPMA if it weren't for the impression he had formed, after reading insulting comments on forums from promode zealots, that the community was full of arrogant, unpleasant elitists (or should that be 1337ists). As i said in reply, an evangelist will have little luck attracting the unconverted populace through labelling them as 'wretched sinners', just as the electorate tire of political parties pointing out the opposition's flaws rather than advertising their own party's attributes, the CPMA team should have focussed more on publicising their creation's strengths rather than offending the very community they could have recruited from. Then perhaps a great mod would have the following it deserves.

To be fair on arQon the majority of what you are talking about regarding the promode evangelists took place before he ever joined the mod team.

However I do think that you made a very good point about his general manner and way of expressing himself. This is illustrated perfectly in his comments about religion and George W. Bush in the above article.

I think that promode is a great 1v1 game, I also think that it sucks ass for TDM, these are both my opinions and are stated as such. Arqon on the other hand states his opinions as fact and then insults anyone who disagrees with him, this is the problem which I have always had with him on public forums.

I realise arqon wasn't involved from the beginning, that's just another reason why the amount of credit he receives seems disproportionate as in my view CPMA is a success primarily because of it's initial concept and design outline. My main gripe is that promode could do with a much better ambassador, rather than a loudmouth who effectively says, "Look at how l33t our fucking l33t mod is, it's far better than anything else out there and i you don't like it, it's probably 'cos you're too shite to play it properly!" If anyone believes that stance is likely to attract more players they are severely delusional and i can't imagine anyone reading this interview will be found on the CPMA servers anytime soon either.

The vq3 and cpma's rocket speed difference is very small right ? I actually thought they had the same speed and never understood why they werent as fast as in qw, since imo that would add more skills to the game.

i don't know if the rockets just fly at same speed and delay you've between 2 shots is shorter or that they fly faster but i know theres a diffirence. I haven't pld vq3 that much anymore so can't really recall what it is, but if i had to take a gues i'd say; faster rockets. Cause the splashdamage is smaller which forces you more to make direct full hits, so faster rockets would be for doing more airrockets instead of aiming on the walls beside the oponents to use the big splashdamage.

well I think it has to do with where you come from. If you say you're the best in Holland, you are arrogant. In America it's more common and I sometime like it. But calling everybody that plays cs, vq3, ra3 a n00b goes a bit far....

That's not really the point, you don't make a game more complicated to make it more fun, you make it more complicated because you like complex games so YOU should find it more fun, as will other people who like complex games :) also complex games are (once you understand them) more interesting to spectate.

While he may not come across like this because he's rather direct/arogant I don't think he's saying "cpma is better than every game in every way possible". He's just saying if you want skilled gameplay cpma is the way to go, as it is the only game where skilled gameplay was the #1 focus of the development. Other games have skills involved in playing of course, but with most that game behind graphics and making it "cool" and "fun" when they designed it.

But there is no inherent value in creating something complicated. The key is to create something that gives the players enough options in each situation, with as few components as possible.

For example, you could argue that having 8 (12? 16?) movement keys is a more complicated (ie, forward/forward run, backwards/backward run) movement system, but that is just artificial complication, that doesn't neccessary create better gameplay.

A game should be as basic as it can get away with, while presenting a challenge. IMO of course.

humm its tricky to resolve this issue, I do understand what you're saying. but nonetheless some companies (including id with q3) have actually tried deliberatly to lower the skill level (rather than just seeing how it turns out as you suggest) to make it easier for beginners. I'd rather play an over complicated game than an over simplified one.

We all know CS gets chosen as main game only because it's community is so big. VQ3's community might be 3 times smaller, but the avg skill of the ones playing it is much higher then the avg CS player. Same imo with cpm vs vq3. Less players but the avg skill is bit higher. Let the flaming begin...

First, to mention skill is ridiculous. Different mods/games require _different_ skill, it's just that simple. Your idea of skill is maybe the same as Arqon but that doesn't mean everyone have to share it.

Second, how I rate success. Promode has successfully introduced several things that have been adopted by other mods, I'll give it that. But as a standalone mod it has only attracted a very small number of fps players.

Maybe the word skill was the wrong pick but let's keep it for now. My definition of skill in this situation is; The time you need to adept when switching to an other game.

Yes i'm saying promode takes longer to adept to then the other mods. How fast does somebody, comming from for example UT or CS, learn all the cpm jump (bunnyhop/circlejump etc) or the vq3 ones. I'm 100% sure that somebody comming from one of those game needs way more time to adept to cpm in it's full glory then to vq3. Just look how long it takes to finnish this map
for somebody comming from UT or CS. They probably won't even make the first jump for the first 2 hours.

nah it'd be too simple, look at q3 it's not less successful because of carmack.
CPMA is not as successful as it could ideally be because it has some features that actually don't attract or repel a whole bunch of people.
my opinion for what it's worth is that it's both sub-vq3 and sub-qw so ppl just prefer the genuine to the fancy.

imo osp 1on1 is the ultimate
i have seen many cpm 1on1 demos, played it myself, and it definitely requires some skill to master, but i always felt the game to be somehow too hectic
its constant running around, and the one who is in control will mostly have an easy game over the other

i think promode 1on1 is more about running armors at high speed than anything else
osp/vq3 1on1 is more about intelligence, cleverness and overall map control while still remaining very skill demanding infight
so imo the best osp 1on1 players are the best q3 players (while some of these guys show great skills in cpma as well)

What the hell? Do you even have a point? If someone has control it's easy for him, because he controls the game, which is not easy most of the time(certainly depends on opponent).
It's like saying "In basketball, if you constantly score more than the other team it's too easy to win."
Furthermore, one fault could lead to your death which could result in a spawn rape and finally tied scores.

you obviously didn't play enough if it still looks 'hectic' to you. playing really aggressive is just one play style cpma has, which usually works good against less experienced players since you can abuse your speed vs their slowness.

Honestly, what an ignorant thing to say. Especially for someone who's ripped off QW so blatantly (bunnies, fast rockets, one hit kills with RL/rail, air control, fast weapon switching) he really should know better than to come out with stuff like this. People have been playing the 3 'big' 1on1 maps for about 7 years now and they're still getting better at it. Lack of strategic depth, indeed...Arqon obviously hasn't played QW 1on1 to any sort of decent level. ;)

As I said, although I like CPMA, it's hardly the 'ultimate form of deathmatch.' There are practically no original ideas in it at all, it's mostly just ripoffs from other games. What I'd like to see is a mod made by gamers, for gamers which has contains some really new and exciting ideas about gameplay. Seems like the most of the best ideas for DM so far have been obtained by flukes and ID bugs. They certainly haven't come from CPMA...

arQon hasn't ripped off QW. The bunnies, fast rockets, air control and fast weapon switching was all implemented in the first betas of cpm, well over a year before arq was involved.

Fuck originality, making a game that plays well is far more important.
Im serious, if you want to make a truly great game, fooling around with stupid ideas that might be fun to play, is the last thing you want to do.
Looking at the history of online game, the thing people like the most is things which the developer did not intend to make ( like bunnyhopping in qw / the wonderfull speediness of the early counterstrike betas ).

Just playing the ut2k3 demo for a couple of hours gave me a sour feeling that they tried way too much to add original features. I really dislike the feel in that game, as with basicly all other new games.

But then again, when it comes down to this, its all just personal opinions.

arqon is pretty clueless when it comes to qw. he proves that everytime he speaks about it. i remember something he said on irc like nq does bunnies better than qw(i hope he was joking!). maybe i'm just looking for the easiest way to explain why he bashes it every chance he gets. i think it's because deep down he knows that is the only game which gives cpma a run for it's money is qw(at least based on the ideals he seems to like). qw and cpma are pretty damn close together and share many traits, if they aren't exactly the same, but what they accomplish in gameplay are.

It's far simpler than that, arQ was a Q2 player originally. :)

Great attention has been paid to CPMAs 1v1 game, as a result, its team games aren't that hot, and require the same tweaking.
I think vq3'ers have a problem with promodes name. 'Promode'...implies 'more special that the cuddly game you play'. Whether CPMA is more skillful or not is NOT the point, it is the attitude presented. Many vq3ers seem unprepared to understand that CPMA is NOT a remake of QW, nor is it Q3 with bunnyhopping. CPMA is CPMA, and those l337 in vq3 get a sharp kick in the ass when they entire CPMA and find that they aren't doing very well.
There is a lot of nasty flaming etc. going on on BOTH sides, vq3'ers being misinformed about CPMA, or not giving it the several games required to get used to its changes and start learning, and CPMA players saying things they shouldn't to vq3ers.

Both sides should just grow up and give each game the merit they deserve.

I play both. I prefer Vq3 over cpma and find it more exciting to watch and play but at the same time I feel cpma has its merits.

Only time i get annoyed is when the cpmaers start whining about vq3 :) And arqons little bit about cpma worming out the weak and gutless makes me ROFL .. in cpma spaming rocket launcher will get you far more kills then hitting a "aimed" rail shot.

imo the name "promode" made lots of people denying it just because it sounded leet. And it's a shame, as I'm sure if they took the time to get used to the physics, they would enjoy this game as they enjoy vq3.

Actually, I'd argue that the major problem with cpma tdm at the moment isn't the game, it's the teams. While the BWCPML is notionally quite full, how many of those teams play *any practices at all*?

Not a lot. Then they go into a game with no tactics (and in many cases, not even any map knowledge) and wonder why it turns into a big ffa.

I'm not saying cpma tdm's perfect (altho I've been impressed by how much minor changes have helped - 150RA and 90 sec quads in particular seem to have the flow sorted, especially on maps designed for cpm), but there's very few clans that I'd say have played enough to discuss it with any degree of expertise, and that's why improvement is so slow.

bunnyhopping was first used in the release of Kombat Teams for quakeworld, not quake 1.

You can bunnyhop in QW, you don't get acceleration but you do keep the same speed and have the control over your direction. And yes, that is called bunnyhopping.

That's actually kind of the point, taking the best of various different games and combining them into the best deathmatch experience available. This entire CPMA Vs [insert whatever here] argument is kind of pointless anyway. If you dont like CPMA then you dont like it, as it happens I do like it but at the same time I DONT like ut2k3 or cs where many others do.

I think the more important point to take away from this articles is that regarding esports. It really is a joke atm unfortunately. There are far to many problems with the way it's being done currently, just as one example the WCG apparently dropping Q3 with little or no community input.

Somewhere there has to be a way for the players to input into the makeup of competitions, if esport ever becomes a reality maybe some kind of players organisation will be required with community representatives can argue the merits of the various games available WITHOUT showing the bias and complete lack of objectivity which is present in the vast majority of posts under this article.

Basically until ALL GAMERS can grow up a bit I dont think there will ever be any successful 'esport' as such, how can the competition organisers be expected to know what to do if the gamers themselves cant decide rationally.

I am not referring to any particular game or mod community either. I think perhaps a lot of people need to learn to hold their tongues somewhat before they jump down someones throat because they dared to suggest their preferred mod might be SHOCK HORROR better than their own.

Your thoughts (ignorance?) on QuakeWorld dumbfound me. You talk about Quakeworld "lacking" tactics and depth in DM.

If you are talking about deathmatch (FFA) then yeah I can understand that, because there tactics in FFA are few and far between (spam spam spam).

But if you are talking about duel or TDM (Ill admit you do call QW TDM a complete package) then you are completely wrong.

The depth of tactical gameplay in both duels and teamplay is far more advanced than any other Quake related shooter (q3, ut etc) out there. This is due to the oldness of the game. After 7 years, people's aim is so good that tactics are the only way to win. Look at any of the QHLan demo's and you'll see this, like a game of chess every move is preplanned.

I really do think you need more experience in QW if you are to comment on at. Quake2 players generally have this problem :)

Yeah, I'm talking about QW duel. QW TDM is still excellent.
I think duel is about as shallow as a game can get though, mostly because since there's no YA (either effectively or literally) on the only 3 maps people play, the RA is about 3 times more valuable than anything else on the map, so while there may still be some degree of strategy it revolves almost exclusively AROUND "how do I get RA?". It's like playing Doom DM with a Megasphere on the map. QW'ers obviously like the game that way; *I* think it's dull and limiting. I certainly don't expect QW'ers to actually look at the game though and suddenly go "hey, it IS all about the RA! We should do something about that..." :P

The contrast with CPMA DM is pretty significant, because there even if the enemy is RA-tanked you have the distinct possibility of getting a YA or two, making a "balance of power" shot, and then entering melee on equal terms or even with the advantage, EARNED through superior strategic play. That flat out isn't possible in QW: even if you out-think your way to a perfect suprise attack, as a GA player you are STILL "out-stamina'd" by the RA player. So reversal of control generally doesn't come from a moment of brilliance, it comes from attrition as you just keep throwing yourself at the guy until you wear him down (having no weapon control, another piece absent from the QW "potential strat" collection, obviously helps with that).

You can say that you prefer that superitem style of play; that QW DM is still *fun* anyway; that DM *should* be about whittling the opponent down rather than having the potential for a "sweeping" attack that reverses control in a single battle; and that the sheer skill of the PLAYERS compensates for the lacks of the GAME - these are all perfectly reasonable opinions. What you can't do is try and argue that QW DM *as a game* isn't strategically much more limited/simple than CPMA DM, in the same way that you can't claim draughts/checkers is a "deeper" game than chess, EVEN IF it's Karpov and Kasparov playing draughts and a couple of plebs playing the chess game.

All wasted breath I expect, but that's (a tiny fraction of) the thought behind my stance on QW DM. Feel free to ignore it, or be forever blacklisted by other QW players for your heresy. :P

i think qw is on par strategically/tactically with cpm(if not better), and i think the above reasons are good ones. qw is different than cpm, you seem to be able to do damage much quicker(in fact i'm almost sure this is true). if damage is done much quicker then superitems as you call them would indeed be balanced. qw and cpm basically both operate on one decisive tactical advantage being able to turn the game. of course frequently in both cpm, and qw you must whittle down your opponent but the other way happens as well. remember this isn't talking about theoretical damage but actual damage that can be done by players in real game circumstances.

how do you think people have back and forth matches on dm6? if what you said is true it'd hardly be possible. however, you yourself seem to have figured it out by saying "that the sheer skill of the PLAYERS compensates for the lacks of the GAME" which indeed means the game isn't as unbalanced as you say. remember skill that players exhibit in the game is all that counts not paper facts.

the items might be unbalanced in theory but the way qw is played(due to the weapons, and other factors) makes it so skill has a more dynamic and applicable role. you are just looking at the armors when you make your statements about qw it seems. remember a game design is a whole interconnected piece. in order to establish it being more limited than cpm you can't just look at one thing. like i have said before qw and cpm really are very much alike in their accomplishments even if they don't go about getting things done the exact same way.

also the qw community isn't opposed to new maps. i've ran a tourney were we used maps no one had really played before and people still play them. admittedly the maps are more limited than cpm but that's more because cpm has an infrastructure built up that keeps tugging the community along. if you had the same in qw new maps would be played as often. players need to be encouraged to play new maps, this is the same in all games. it is a bit worse in qw because the game is so much older though. do you really think cpm players would go out of their way to adapt new maps if there wasn't an active infrastructure to encourage them?

Funny&nice interview. I like this guys attitude and agree most of he's points altrough I'm not a fan of CPMA partly because of its too fast weapon change and mainly because of its physics. As VQ3 being my first quake promodes air control just feels too strange.

Couple of things, YA is VERY important, on both dm2 and dm4.
And while there is no YA on dm6, megahealth + green armour is ~ RA + 100.

In DM2, the focus cannot be on RA's, as THERE are 2 of them, and both players are able to get at them. The real focus is on the MEGAHEALTHS.

In DM4, the RA is one of the least important items. CONTROL is the main aspect of DM4, if you control the main room, game over.

ON dm6, the focus is on the megahealth + shaft. Keeping these items away from your opponent can win the game. You cannot just sit and run the RA's, as a person with MH + GA can easily take them down.

I really think you need to watch some demo's of euro or australian players (not americans, then suck :D ) , expecially dirtbox (sparky). Reload on dm6 too.

His reaction to the question regarding the resemblence of CPMA to QW is one of deluded indignance of the fact that the resemblance of CPMA to QW undermines his claim to authorship (or even skilled selection) of ground breaking improvements to VQ3 gameplay. He begins by attacking the intelligence of anyone who would make that claim, and then implies that it's more like Q2, which amounts to empty ad homenum and complete and utter BS regarding the contribution of Q2. He makes a pretend correction to the origin of core gameplay improvements simply because they are shared by the original abandoned form of QW, namely Quake, which is both rhetoric via straw-man, and irrelevant. QuakeWorld is 'Quake version 2' as it were. In light of this, what he pretends not to admit are directly copied from QW are: Bunny-hopping (though in CPMA not as elegant nor subtle/difficult as in QW), instant weapon switch, same speed rockets (faster), and he claims that QW and CPMA 'share the "thrill" element of melees and potential for skill distinction in movement', meaning improvements to knockback mechanics, and, though both compromised and incomplete, and easier to perform in CPMA, bunny hopping. He proceeds to make the following claims, offering no explanation: QW is lacking in 'strategic and tactical depth', Q2 has more 'mindgame elements' (the only positive claim he makes about the game which he alleges CPMA borrows more aspects from), and that QuakeWorld is somehow surpassed in '(noteably armour and weapon behaviour)'. Let me add that he neglects to admit QW's source for the removal of footstep sounds, footstep sounds drastically punish attempts at fast stealth, reduce and almost remove the ability to manipulate sounds for deception, and promote dumb camping. Also CPMA's armour system (and weapons) resembles QW much more closely than Q3 or Q2.
