I cant get the movie to work properly with the codec that follows on windowsXP, am I a fool too? And if so, what operating system should I use?

if you want to be, sure. must have something wrong setup with your system in order for it to not work.

It wouldn't play right for me in media player classic, even with those codecs installed. I had to actually play it in the MS Media Player to watch it.

I tried the normal mediaplayer (that ships with winXP), mediaplayer classic and the realone player, same stuff with both.

Try VLC Player or BSPlayer.

I tried some more, but found that power dvd worked excellent for some reason :)

win32 codecs + mplayer work fine in Linux _for now_, and only for people using 32-bit x86 or x86-64 with binary compatibility (not completely sure about the last part).

WMV is _not_ an open standard, and there's no guarantee it'll be supported in the future when people upgrade to fully 64-bit systems, or when Microsoft decides to stop using WMV for another format.

This is why I applaud id software for releasing their old code so people can recompile old games to run on newer systems.

Microsoft's stronghold is their file formats. Just take a look at Office documents and spreadsheets and how they lock customers into using their proprietary formats only usable by certain versions of their software. Microsoft neither cares for forward nor backwards compatibility with Office, don't expect them to with audio/video formats, either.

I for one would like to be able to watch these videos several years from now, regardless of what software or hardware I'll have.

I write this as a Quake2 players aspect. I have never played promode, but some q3 and qw yes, so i should know how promode is played.

So let me ask the question: were these frags extraordinary? I found them quite boring. For me it looked like you collected frags hardly over a month and then build up this movie. Or was the clan not so advanced? Maybe im wrong and full of shit, you tell me.

Editing wasnt very creative, but it didnt disturb. Why did you leave the statusbar visible? It takes focus away from the action and isnt so important since there is just frag clips, not a chronological demo where you need the health/armor/ammo information.

I REALLY approve of this, for the exact reasons aggnog gave. The simple truth is that for real frags (i.e. ingame, not choreographed like The Badge etc), it IS that much harder to keep your focus and make a godlike shot with 3H than at 200/200 with a Battlesuit.

As far as "impressive or not" goes, that's a personal call. I'll point out though that players are noticeably slower overall in Q2 and Q3 than in CPM, and an order of magnitude less "agile". While this is by no means a "Greatest Frags Ever" video *, certain shots that are virtually unmissable in Q2/VQ3 (notably air rox/rails) are significantly harder when you have targets that can move at 800ups and swerve while doing it, especially if you're doing the same. :)

(* If that's what you're after, VoO's and a couple of others are more along those lines).

How do you explain the fact that qw videos (like FDE or DDE) have much nicer frags? In qw they move as fast as you do in promode.

Why not make an ingame movie as demo file(s)? Dont know if its possible in q3, but in q2 it is. For me ingame is in game, not in media player.

You really dont have to give any focus on statusbar when the frags are collected for long period of time, because at that point every action looks great itself. Can i now make an induction that ingame movies are just an excuse from the editor for not bothering to take more time for his project?

After id saw demo code used as a start point for bots/exploits in Q2, they decided (wisely) to keep the demo code (which is pretty much the same as the network code... think about it) secret. This means demo editting tools like keygrip aren't possible.

I agree totally with the inclusion of the hud. I find I relate to action much better if it looks similar to that which I play myself. Since it's a single command to toggle the 2d hud on/off, it seems pretty unlikely (not to mention rude) to suggest that the editor has left the hud in place out of laziness?

The HUD is good, it adds flavor to the scene. I don't watch a gaming movie just to see nice frags, but to see nice gameplay. A player whose gameplay takes account of the whole situation is much more entertaining to watch.

For example, gelleh's frag on zero4 was very cool, but without the life bar, it wouldn't have been nearly as interesting.

Other good examples of this are in CLX's three quake movies. They have a lot of places where the HUD adds a lot of depth to the action, e.g. running out of rockets but managing to get the kill anyway, or getting a frag after dodging shots from several opponents while at low life. It was also impressive to see a few cases where his team has fairly even scores against opponents like p1mp with only a few minutes left on the clock.

That first synced frag is cool :-o

Some frags were very good, and the funny scenes were great. I think the editing was a bit uneven, and could have displayed them better. The syncing felt weird, like it was on and off. And the slow-motion replays looked like they could have had better camera movement etc, and several times showed a few extra seconds of extra action before/after the frag that took away from the feel.
