the point is that arqon modified ospers' game....after we played it for nearly 7 years. that's the problem here. no one asked him to do that, yet plenty have asked him to un-do it - or at least get the movement back/lg to what it is, yet he only mocks ospers.

About the movement, I think it's time for arQuon to get over it and add a little more acceleration so we have osp like movement.

i'm not sure of the technical details, but the lg handles differently; it's more "noodly" with higher pings (45+), but is a lot more devastating with lower pings.

Just set TL 1 from ping 0-150, yes yes you're used to tl 0 so was i and i was stubborn like u vq3 players it took me a year to final switch to tl1 and it toook only a few matches to get used to it

NOTHING has been changed with the tl or lg its cos cpm netcode removes the 50ms builtin to q3 and some other stuff

Actually rhea asked arqon to change "osp" by asking arqon to bring osp up to cpma's technical standards. Bug fixes like the movement were a shoe in. If you don't know this already, osp would have had independent physics and many other improvements that cpma has had for ages.

the difference being, that even if rhea had changed it and received the same feedback, i doubt he'd have responding by calling the players a bunch of whiners/sheep/idiots/etc, all while being an elitist dickhead and ignoring the players he was providing a mod for. in fact knowing rhea, he probably would have been quite a bit more receptive and willing to pursue some sort of compromise.

It's quite amazing how many people are confusing CPMA VQ3 with CPMA CPM. I asked some people on xs4all why they wouldn't play CPMA VQ3 and they responded back with comments such as, "it's too fast for me".

To me this is also a sign that the server admins can't be arsed, or they are under the same umbrella of those who see CPMA and think OMFG L33T0ZRS TO L33T 4 MEZZZZZZZZ I D0NT W4NT L3R4NS.

i meant it the other way around, tournament organizers probably wont switch when everybody is still playing osp on publics.

i thank god the cpl did it, i wasnt happy with it in the first place but love the mod now. And the public duel players are starting to play cpma vq3.

But i dont see any tdm or ctf tournament organizer taking such a risk so the publics have to switch first.

I do have it installed and and I sometimes play it, but all those features don't make a difference to me when all I want to do is join a server and make a few frags a couple of hrs per/week.

You might have a really good point there actually. All the time spent on CPMA as a mod has been with the hardcore player in mind. I don't really see one aspect of the current revision that is new player friendly, with the exception of the GUI settings interface, you still have to have your own superhud.

I think if the cpma team could perfect GUI settings and include OSP preset example huds, we would all be much better off. You would still have the flexibility that the hardcore players want, with the ease of use for the newbies. The only question now is how would we transport our custom huds to a tourney that doesn't allow pre-configured configs?

Why wouldn't they? CPL allows em, and all the tourneys always have for q3.

No, the events so far have allowed it after screening. I think arq just wanted to be ready just in case, and it's nice to make it more noob friendly. (also easier for the OSP people with diff commands to set up)

Indeed. The ability to tailor to the freshest of newbies is what we should be concentrating on tbh. The hardcore among us already have all the features we absolutely need. Changes can be made later if we need them. If we could get a really easy and complete GUI for settings then we might actually start seeing an influx of new players.

I prefer osp for casual play because it has a lot of things baseq3 lacks that I use in my casual play like +wstats, nme models etc. cpma also has these features but doesn't contain anything else that I would find useful enough to make me want to change from osp to cpma. I think the new way the hud is handled is too confusing to new players. I could easily see myself decide to skip playing q3 altogether if i were a new player, because it just requires too much reading and cfg testing to get to use. Same goes for OSP commands that has been changed to something different or completely replaced in CPM VQ3.
1. They should also make it possible to change the hud like in the old osp version..
2.. have something like cg_allowoldschoolospcmds, so that you dont need to spend so much time testing your cfg.

I think the term "molboarbejde" might be familiar to you.

a lot of people spend ages with their old cfg, now they have to do it all over again. Allowing them to just copy their old osp cfg and load it flawlessly, with the exact same hud and settings as previously, would make the transaction a lot easier so to speak. If you just play for fun, im not so sure how many would want to bother as i stated before. I dont consider mysel lazy, more like the opposite, but i dont have the same patience as i used to, nor the drive to read some wikipedia and readme file, and test other cfgs and compare them to my own, and load quake on and on, just to change a simple hud. I can see how it would be stupid to keep the old cvars, and im not talking about what would be best for me, i sincerely believe that a lot of the old osp players wouldnt want to go through it all over again, so for the sake of the Quake 3 scene, keeping them probably wouldnt be a bad idea. It's not like there isnt any alternatives out there, with WoW, dota, xbox, ps3 etc...

The only good alternative to keep the cvars, would be some way to convert ones old cfg, to a new one with updated cvars..

The cpma hud had been improved a lot compared to the ancient osp hud even BEFORE the cpma superhud was introduced so it's not as simple as you think it is.
It baffles me that you cannot understand how reintroducing an inferior (and redundant) hud would be a complete waste of developer time.

bs, I played alot of cpma vq3 and I even played cpm and cpm only for quite some time, so I know what the mod is like. Still, for vq3 gameplay I prefer the OSP jump length and the OSP netcode with its delay but ultimate smoothness.

the jump lenght is soo bs its only abit more wont affect much, i mean i can still easily do all jumps in cpma to rail (dm6) and all other stuff ...

and for ultimate smoothness play on lan..

the bigger problem is the netcode atm, not the jump length/height. in OSP it all might be a little bit more delayed but it is smooth and absolutely stable. in CPMA you have - imo - alot of randomness when using laghax -1, I dont even use xerp 1 but still it feels so hacked, and I don't like that feel.

Due to the leagues I have now to play both cpma vq3 and old osp vq3. Funny, 2 mods with different movement and both claiming it's vanilla gameplay ...

I don't care what mod I have to play, as long as it's _one_ of them. What really sucks now is that I have to switch between them. Worst situation, and since cpma devs refuse to make the movement like we're used to this won't change.
I was clearly better off playing old osp only. Sure, everyone switching to cpma would be the best solution, but we all know this won't happen.
Too bad I'm playing a game with such stubborn devs and a stubborn community. One of them without stubbornness would be enough: Players ignoring the arrogance of the devs and living with it, or devs listening to the players ... but no, players like me who could live very well with both mods have to play both now ... too bad ...

Everyone was complaining about X-Battle and Q4Max in Q4, not one topic without many comments of random people that they want _one_ mod. And now? Same happens to Q3 now, just look at Clanbase for example, where you _have_ to play both if you want to play ctf and duel. "Great" work ... :(

The mod devs are wrong, because they try to force the community to unwanted changes. So the devs weaken the game with that stupid decision.

It's because people after so many years of no change people get used to playing what they have. Most are also satisfied with it. Look back at the NQ/QW split in North America. Many top gamers stayed with NQ despite it having clearly inferior netcode.

ive been coming across plenty of people lately that claim how superior promode is to vq3/OSP and always callvote promode. i f2 for a bit saying i dont play promode then get berrated for being noob. so after a while i just want to play so i f1 for promode and some map ive never played a match on and procede to beast after i figure out the basic layout, get called a noob vq3 camper or cheater and then they disconnect. it's the same shit.

They really changed the physics (jump range/altitude), compared to 125 FPS baseQ/OSP? Is that really true? If so, I never will change to vq3 cpma! I like the physics as it is and was intended by id-soft. Don't fu...ing touch the damn physics!
Hope some day someone will add MV demos to OSP and fix the vote bug (kick xy/reconnect). That is all I need.

Thats not exactly true! It was not intended in the beginning, but later, as they tried to change it, the community cried out loud, and they left the "bug" in. They even add a cmd to get 125 FPS movement with weak comps (pmove).

OSP is pure Quake 3. It did not change weapons or physics. The only thing is enemymodels which differs from baseQ IMO. But that is fine for me. And if not, I just could not use it.

I prefer pure Quake 3. The physics proven for years now and lots of tourneys, players and games were fine with it. This game is the result of many tests and discussions. The physics and the weapons are perfect as it is now! Get the hands off it FFS!

The numbers of quakers have exponetially decreased the last couple of years. And do you know why? Because NOTHING changed. And no, OSP didn't stay the way it was because it was perfect but simply because Rhea had no time to continue working on it.

You know what I think why the number of players decreased? BECAUSE of the countless mods and point releases out there. To exaggerate it: Every single player plays his favourite point release with his favourite mod and sitting on his favourite server, waiting for the others, which are doing the same.
Vanilla Q3 needs development, thats right. But only to make it more user friendly, not to change the fundamentals.
For example MV demos, new maps, better ingame serverbrowser, ingame demoplayer with the option to rewind, repeat, add bookmarks in demos, better chatsystem with the opion to copy and past URL's from the chat, the option to play demos in real time on servers, more stats/infos available ingame with the mouse (for example a profile with a picture, email addy, weapon accuracy of the last 100 games and a hall of fame with screenshots of good players which were defeated ...
Thats the things which would make the game fresh and more spicy.
But don't dare to touch the basics. It was changed often enough! Leave it like it is.

Arqon has the means and the mod to make happy cpma and osp players, his ideas and followers are not in the interest of the majority of the community, his attitude is also such that even if he did please the majority, you couldnt be sure he would then change some shit just because he wants to.

In order to have a mod that will surpass osp you need to please its main player base, no point having a great feature rich bug fixed mod like cpma to use in leagues and completions if you havn't got the contenders coming through from the player base.

cpma is also unfortunatley a victim of its own greatness, with all its bug fixed and sterilised greatness, but you just cant beat the hilarity and fun of the original q3 and variant vq3 osp.

Currently I think there's 3 xs4all publics, Derfel some time ago suggested they should be limited to allow less players. I say better idea would be to have at least 1 of those 3 to run cpma vq3 ctf so even the slowest of us can give it a shot. We all have the mod installed already after all. I for one would LOVE to give it a shot, and I have a feeling I might like it too. And if what whoever says about better netcode is true, that would be a huge bonus for me! :)

But sadly, leaving things as they are right now wouldn't help to get people to finally play the perfect VQ3 on CPMA, also getting new players on it. Surprisingly (or not), new players still today tends to start playing on OSP (because recomendation of other OSP players since there are more people still playing OSP -specially the average TDM joe-, because there are more OSP servers, because you wouldn't get confused on voting a gameplay every single time you join a server, or vote weaponrespawns or whatever the average lazy admin doesn't bother to configure.) Also the ones that hear about CPMA VQ3 and ends trying it, will instantly go back to OSP for the facts mentioned before, but also because the "what the fuck is going on, I can't change that hud, why is LINX here if im using XAERO, this feels shit /quit & back to old OSP" feeling.

This is pretty sad, since the best thing would be that CPMA VQ3 becomes the only and unique way to play VQ3, standarizing it and making it easier to everyone (specially as a result of converting every single OSP server to CPMA).

Now the problem here is: (Im sure everyone experienced that on some point), and its no other thing than trying to play VQ3, on a generic "CPMA 1.39 whatever server", which lets you vote whatever you want (VQ3 or CPM). Here comes the fights, kicks, votes, and "I will call an admin if you vote X gameplay" between the ones that want to play VQ3 and the ones that want to play CPM.

The solution here is here clearly on arQon's hands, so, this is a message to you:

Since its clear that admins will never configure servers the right way, and the fight will continue forever, why not just make happen what lot of people said already here more than a couple of times, and thats no other thing than releasing a configured, ready to run CPMA VQ3 under the name of OSP 2.0, that its ready to configure for dumb admins and easy to join and play for dumb/newbs players. Leaving on the readme and somewhere else that this is running throught CPMA its suficient IMO. Also, and again, EMULATING 125 fps physics wouldn't hurt ANYONE: The ones that doesn't care about the change will stay OK since they come from playing OSP and will make the stubborns/newbs/whatever you want to call it happy. At the end of the day, if it says osp on the "Game" list on ASE, people will play it even if you put naked Lucy skins on every single model.

I tried it, and I like it. But the movement is different. No problem to get used to it though. A problem is definately that I have to play now old osp _and_ cpma vq3 (check clanbase, for example: There you have to play both for ctf and duel, as already mentioned).
I don't care for this discussion, slightly different physics, new features etc., but I do care for Quake that is all I want to play. I want to get used to this or that movement, but now I have to switch all the time. This really sucks. I talked to a few other players and all thinking the same that the switching is the worst case. I want _one_ mod.

As we clearly can read here most osp'ers like osp's movment / netcode rather than cpma vq3 movement etc.
The 2 mods dont feel like the same thing at all and a lot can agree on that even if cpma is coded better.

I want to be able to play VQ3 TDM but it's all in OSP. I cannot play in OSP because my connection gets tons of packet loss and ping spikes and it just generally is a worse mod for me.

Im not saying that cpma is shit or whatever, i just like osp how it is now.

But in your case its your connection that is messing around since other can play osp without any problems online.

Yes I know it's my connection, however I think you'll be surprised just how many other people have bad connections that cpma would benefit. It just makes the game more fun for those of us who don't get 30-50ms everywhere tops.

It's not problem of lazyness for me (and for a lot of people) since I can do all the jumps without a problem, but a problem of the feel as a whole. OSP 125 FPS physics just feels better, less "Q4 1.2", if you know what I mean. So, I don't get why you wouldn't emulate 125 FPS physics since it doesn't hurt anyone: You make happy the ones that want it, and the ones that doesn't care about the change wouldn't care about it, and obviously CPM players wouldn't care less about what happens with VQ3.

osp q3 is still played to this day for a reason ppl enjoy it enough to keep fighting for it rather than play cpma vq3.

After playing cpmvq3 for quite some time now, I have to admit that there are a ton of things that I love about it. It's smooth, online playability is very consistent, and mvd is killer. On the other hand there's still something that feels more true about rail in osp than in cpm. I mean...it's not a huge issue but it's one reason why I don't turn down an osp ctf pu. As lame as osp netcode is in most respects...some weapons just feel more natural, to me at least.

Seeing as how I wrote the code for both, and CPMA's is simply a more advanced version, you can just tune it "back down" to the OSP 1.03 settings and still have the superior feature set / quality / etc of the more modern releases.

About the so called fixed physics, i had 125+ fps for years, i'm used to that movement and jump height. I guess i just like Q3 for what it is. I see CPMA as another mod and not as improved OSP and no one is going to tell me what to play.

But i guess people just don't seem to understand that, so i'm sure there will be another CPMA vs OSP post next week :/

Hey draven. I didn't read all the messages, but I'm all for changing OSP to CPMA VQ3. There are tons of argument, I've been making CPMA VQ3 cmapign for 2-3 years for now, you can pm me for some links deatils or tons of mails/discussions/tutorials I sent.

For this time I thought and talked with people alot. And there are changes to switch OSP to CPMA VQ3. But these ways are very hard. If you want to convince OSPers (TO TRY!!!) to play CPMA VQ3 at least few games you have to:

1. Run famous league on CPMA VQ3 not OSP. kuh3liga was very close (about 55/45 percent of votes). This way you force players to play CPMA VQ3 at least 4-5 games. That's like they play 1v1 tournaments now. Best scenario: run Jolt on CPMA VQ3.

or you can:

2. Run famous servers on CPMA. You have to play and practice somewhere. Best scenario: run gs.net, XS4ALL, spontanctfs on CPMA VQ3.

or you can:

3. This is drastic and 1% chance. You can go and find a bug in OSP that makes it unplayable anymore. Remember vierprev bug? If you find simple command that crashes the server without pointing who did it - mod is unusable anymore (even if CPMA has this bug too it will be fixed in days I guess).

or you can:

4. Apply 1 and 2 and run your own league with your own servers. But it has to be for few weeks. 1 day pq.de tournament starting at 15:30 (wtf? :o) at sunday won't make it.

I'd welcome cpma poping up on more servers, unfortunately i think it would be a disaster for q3.

Lets say the popular xs4all CA server bunged cpma on it, would it still be popular (maybe if its setup right, but i have no faith in that happening)

Thinking about it i cant see cpma CA ever being better as we all enjoy the osp bugs, invis players bounce bugs that bring new dimension and fun to the game.

Last time i hoped on a cpma vq3 server all the defaults were different from osp, even when changing map it defaulted back to cpm, as you can imagine the server cleared fast! and this was from people willing to try! please dont go on about server admins being retard, nothing we can do about that is there...

anyway what cpma needs is more FFA and CA servers where we can just hop on frag about on and learn to adjust (adjust to the inferior movement and aim) :D

When you know you can reproduce overbounces reliably and where to do that, then yeah they can be fun - otherwise (i.e "actual" play on an osp server) they're just a random annoying push on landing that can go from just throwing you off, eventually costing you a fight, to making you void with a powerup/flag :p

People still play OSP because that's the mod all the leagues/public servers use. Of course it's a real shame, but honestly, what can we do?

Only thing I can really think of is for the next jolt campaign, as many as people as possible suggest using cpmvq3 and see what the admins decide.

I don't like the netcode and physics tweaks. I like regular client-server netcode, shaft in CPMA is really ridiculous, and the physics feels weird after all these years playing OSP... The hud stuff is pretty great though.

Movement-wise, CPMA VQ3 just doesn't feel like OSP. This may be a biased opinion, but it just doesn't feel right for me.

And I know about cg_nudge, I know all about CPMA's netcode, I just don't like that much client side predictions, specially regarding hit-detection priority.

Only a minority is discussing things here, the vast majority could care less for a little change or if they play OSP or CPMA VQ3. Like explained above regarding your stupid comment "get used to it" or something. The truth is that random players like me, who did have _one_ mod (osp) for all leagues and gametypes now _have_ to play (or they just could give it up which would be no solution for the community - even you might get that) _two_ mods (OSP _and_ CPMA VQ3, look at Clanbase, for example) with different physics. We _were_ adapted to _one_ movement. _Now_ we have to _switch_ all the time (players who play different gametypes like me, ctf and duel, for example). That's the _opposite_ of adaption and "get used to it". I _want_ to get used to _one_ mod.

Now I am stuck between two groups, one who wants the change, because in all other aspects CPMA is at least equal or superior, the other doesn't want something new, because OSP has everything what they want and they don't like the new movement.

But the group that doesn't get heard nor the devs are willing to listen are the players like me who have to live with switching all the time now, depending on the league and gametype. That really sucks.
You know, in Quake 4 everyone was whining about the two mods, players wanted _one_ mod. One could think "we" learned from that situation, but no, instead it's fucked up now in Quake 3. "Great" work. :-(

So what to do?
1. Make _everyone_ switching (I would gladly play CPMA due to all the benefits, but having to play _two_ mods is still the worst situation; won't happen, because we all know how stubborn _both_ sides of the community are)
2. Get the devs to _emulate_ 125 fps OSP physics with fps independent movement as good as possible (win-win-situation, everyone will be happy since that's the only reason not to switch right now; won't happen due to stubbornness of the devs)
3. Give CPMA VQ3 a different name and make leagues for _both_ OSP and CPMA so the players like me can pick what they want without having to switch all the time (for obvious reasons: VQ3 for still most people is what was played since all those years, and it's ridiculous by definition to have _two_ different physics which both claim to be VQ3 (read: vanilla))

I don't care if I play OSP or CPMA, I just want _one_ mod. So please stop the nonsense with "get used to", because that's all we want! And that's exactly the problem to solve, that we now have to live with different physics all the time, a problem we didn't have without CPMA "VQ3".

look at the client docs. you can disable the adaptive prediction if you don't like it.

Funny shit this is. Before I more or less quit the hole Quake and PC gaming thing in general I was playing CPMA when this fps physics thing was FIXED and all hell broke loose from the cpma community bitching about it being harder to do some jumps on some random maps and blah blah blah .(I for one didnt care as my pc at the time allowed me to only cap a 76fps anyway).
Now I come back and I see the same damn argument.

I personally would like to see all of the cool stuff from CPMA get moved to OSP aside from the superHUD. I'd love to see the hole fps/physics tie removed and to keep people happy(by that I meen quiet) have it work so people still barely have to strafe jump to do b2r.. Unfortunately I remember that being either very difficult to do or impossible for one reason or another.

arqon also didnt have a good comp to have 125 fps so he never had the pleasure to try the godlike movement in osp :o

But on the back of my mind (and everyone's else that played osp before), you know that jumping arround on osp felt better.

Conclusion: I adapted myself to something inferior, which is dumb. But you see yourself forced to do it because the other awesome CPMA features (can't go back to shitty osp netcode at this point, ie).

Currently I still play osp, because since installing cpma 1.40 I get a chopping effect when playing in vq3 mode. Doesn't occur in cpm mode. Only in vq3 mode. After reading through the 1.40 change log it doesn't appear that any settings have changed that should have an effect on this, but it does. The really annoying factor is that it only seems to come into play when the core gameplay is changed by a vote, or anytime a player readies during a team game. I don't mind cpma gameplay, but I'd like to not be arsed with a gameplay effect that feels like I'm playing on a 16mb gf1 when I decide to play with the vq3 core gameplay.
