I'd like to know who is this new audience
QL got a -very- old engine, quake is less accessible than the sims or cod4 because of it's long learning curve, and blablabla.. shit been said 10 tribillions times : it's not appealing to casual gamers ; so if the game isn't for the casuals, neither the fans (obviously a huge dumb mistake they're making here), for who the fuck is it aimed ?

also I thought all the beta testers were known names of quake community, and that random joe would have his entrance ticket at the open beta, weird

if they don't have the common sense to make clan arena the default pub gametype then id really does have their head in a hole in the ground

sounds like they havent really changed the gameplay rules very much, but some how, remove one or two auxiliary features and the game becomes broken..? i mean, quit cos they remove console chat??? omg, im gna go slash my wrists...

wtf did u expect anyway??? QL is for noobies, not pros, the pros are expected to stay playing OSP and CPMA.

Why bother with the NDA at all, as far as we know it's all shit anyway.
And why cater to a market of new players? You simply do not get new players today with a game like Quake, with competition from titles like CoD4 (gameplay) and UT3 (graphics).

As tourist said, it really is a lose/lose situation at the moment.

And if the matchmaking system is open only to QuakeLive it's an even worse lose situation. Hell, I could write a matchmaking system in PHP that cross-references the Data from maxstats and puts the users in skillgroups. Not with a game behind it but this isn't so hard to do, especially for a team of trained pros who get paid to do it.

It's a free product derivated from a dead IP, nobody is going to steal anything...especially here.

That NDA is more like a shield against the ultimate and obvious flamefest...

Giving details of an in-development game is a clear breach of the NDA, and given the flames in this thread you cant try and tell me that its not harmful to id's business (remember, "ad supported game" is not the same as "game of no financial value"), and since its a WIP, any gripes people may have could be fixed before the release.

I'm no lawyer, but I'm pretty sure breach of an NDA could easily run up some pretty large legal bills if id felt it necessary...

Yet we both know the "constructive criticism" in this thread will not have any impact whatsoever on the .plan provided by ID.

Plus, how enforcable is it on unpaid testers? It would be real tacky for a company to sue an unpaid tester who ontop of that spent time and money to buy the product. There is enough flammatory stuff going on about the product---that would bring outsiders who dont even play the game wanting to hate on the company.

It would actually turn into a more dicey situation with id employee making a mod that includes other modders in the community. Becuase one cannot say knowledge that is private doesnt influence knowledge in another endeavor. So it would be tricky becuase then a couple mods would have to become official id games. I am no expert but yeah its interesting to think about. But yeah the big factor would be the "free time", the prestige of being able to tell people you are a "tester" is not really payment and is only ego-candy, so yeah i would find it incredible a person being sued, its not like intellectual property in the sense of an employee who has knowledge that could cost money---like knowledge of the engine which they would sell---so a post of disgust would be funny to see a lawsuit lol.

But Apple didn't suffer too bad when they sued. Funny though I think it was xerox that sued one of the apple founders for intellectual property. Good topic, that if you work somewhere and you come up with an idea and then yo umarket it---the company can say they inspired it and through the contract sue. Its interesting to think about, even if the person quits, but i am no expert but its nice and dicey :)

But it wouldnt be what you would want the press to cover, then id would join the ranks of the RIAA and you wouldn't want that :P

It would cost them money to hire lawyers and attempt to sue you, and in the end, how much do you even have? Hell, they'd have to prove that there was a loss of value to the product by your releasing information for a game that is free to play with ad support. Relax, the most they'll do is ban you and probably lock you out of future betas and any online services they provide.

if this is the case i have worries.

and what is with this new hud? i thought this was some sort of temporary shite version for the closed beta. and why on earth does the scoreboard need to cover the ENTIRE screen. looks very ugly and unprofessional from what i've seen.

they really need some people on board who know q3 inside out. i understand they want the opinion of random newbs, but they don't have the eye-for-detail and perfectionist approach that knowledgeable and experienced people have. its very frustrating to sit here on the outside while a bunch of monkeys get to contribute to the beta.

This is why the NDA means nothing. You have been teased with the words "we'll have something in two weeks" or "very soon", then months later you get leaked news its being tested by monkeys and the whole project is going pear shaped.

I hope they're not planning to keep it a closed beta up to the point where its so poor there's no chance of a decent game. Why not have a open beta and have a whole community of experienced quakers help, no other game can get that development feedback. Seems they're just wasting time atm.

honestly is anyone reading these comments surprised that this is reaction? I was pretty sure that this would be the exact reaction from the posters. This free version they are making didn't strike me (from what they have been saying) as a version for all the competitive types to jump in. You have CPMA for that. This is a move that allows them to test the features they are throwing in like matchmaking or what have you for the next game so they can try and get it right, not a resurrection of Quake3's popularity from 1999-early 2000s.

So from this type of outlook, I am not in the least surprised that the reactions (especially on this site I mean come on) are all negative. Really, some people are just super die hard about Quake3 (a good number here) and nothing will ever supplant it or even come close. So to expect anything more than an outrage from these people is foolish.

that has been my experience with friends who I've tried to get into quake. they get beat hard couple of times and decide it's simply not worth it. even if you go easy on them they eventually connect to an online server and get their shit ruined.

depending on the ranking system, it might be a little more easy on beginners, but as I said most of them will get trashed by still unranked experienced players and give up, while those experienced players will soon go back to whatever they were playing before.

if they get beaten hard the first time (not a couple of times, only the first time), maybe they get a low rank and only get to play other low ranked players (and no unranked ones).

And why should experienced switch back if there are tourneys etc.
From what i could gather, most of the good players and pros are looking forward to a big tdm community again and cant wait for that (me too).

In my opinion, from what I have seen around the site, a stand-alone CPMA game is what a lot of people want. For various reasons, people here are not confident in id's ability to expand and/or improve DM games from their past efforts. I think if they are able to get that done, then the people who are the most adamant and vocal about CPMA features being the new games and having very low system requirements (which I think some people have way too unrealistic expectations) can flock to that. I mean, that's what it seems like a good deal of site goers want.

Many here do not care about graphics in the slightest (hence the specialized configs to turn them down or off as much as possible) even though all of id's in-house releases have been at the top of the graphics chain when first released, carrying huge system requirements. So if CPMA is the pinnacle, then try and help out the people who are trying to make the stand-alone happen and get that realized, since obviously what ever id might try to do probably isn't going to appeal to those people.

1. why do you think beta TESTERS can decide how the game will be like? Of course they can suggest stuff but they first and for most are there to test it for bugs and balance.

My god if I only had a decent pc that would allow me to play new games (TF2, GoW, CoD4, GTA 4, SC2) I would piss on Quake many years ago. Surely the gameplay is fun, but what do you expect? Resurrection of an eight years old title? Not gonna happen. FPS duel is dying, TDM is in fact FFA. And honestly, I don't give a fuck about QL anymore.

hello, i have ql beta and
many people (also pro players) have been invited but nobody plays. :( walter is right when he says that its worser like q3(notice: still in beta!!).
id software dont give out much information, but some rumors:
- pro players arent important
- no custom maps support (because of ads)
- no custom servers

i pray that this things dont come true. i dont want lose my beta account so i post anonymous, because i want help the game still.

Q2 TDM is really good..

balance sucks in TDM because it leads to FFA and in Q2 the weapons are really well tiered.

This is exactly what happened in Q4. People thought it was Raven at fault, but id specifically said that every single detail had to be approved by them first. The greatness of the quake series was thanks to the modders, not the developers. id has shown time and time again that they are unable to meet the demands of the market.

Coincidentally alot of people who left didn't own in the game either. I was astonished the other day scoring 900+ points in less than 15 minutes in q3 ctf---and did it over and over. I dont play q3. How is that all greatness? When it comes to playing q4max all weapons ctf I suck bad.

This is the same problem we had from Q4. Q4 came out of the box without even the functionality of Q3 when it was patched up. Why do they continue to release games without the knowledge of the previous game they have fixed up? Even fully functional and patched, we still have to rely on mod makers to add anything even remotely useful. Why is it that there are people who are being paid for their work and it's coming out worse than the work that people do for fun? Just like Blizzard with WoW, you can complain about the product all day long, but if you use it anyway, the company isn't going to care.

I'd happily buy a copy of CPMA; I would not buy another id product.

Removing the /kill command is a good thing.
This "strategy" you talk of is extremely shallow when its success is dependant randomness. At least in ctf it's extremely lame to have outsmarted the def, have him realise he's too far behind to catch up, see him /kill, get lucky and respawn in front of you. Nice strategic element there.

It's also lame in 1v1 as players can opt not to finish off an opponent and instead keep map control, which obviously doesn't work if the opponent realises he's dead anyway, /kills and respawns at ra.

They probably want to reduce the need of opening the console. Also, the console isn't the best solution for chatting cause of the key that toggles it. That key is hardcoded and has issues with different keyboard layouts. Also, Q3 console was thought too much for chatting, imo, and the starting / for commands is a pita when you have to use it intensively for developing, specially if you use autocompletion a lot.
Anyway, the right solution would be to implement a proper chatting console (only chatting) bindable by the user to a key, and not just disable chatting from the development console, cause the say team + screen notify it has is very uncomfortable.

EDIT: I understand why they want to disable console for chatting cause I've been tempted a bunch of times to do it too.

Flag handoff is the only example you've offered that isn't blatantly "cheating".

Having \kill as the only way to do that is actually BETTER than making flags droppable IMO, because you shouldn't be allowed to have two "wins" with no "losses" (hand flag to stronger/faster player AND still be able to escort them).

Come on the 7 damage machine gun wasn't strong enough. It shouldn't scatter and should do 10 damage per round. And you should spawn with 200 bullets. And 150 health.

Anything that makes dying a viable part of a deathmatch strategy should be minimized, and /kill is one of those. I liked it when VQ3 CTF had the 5 second delay (or whatever it was); when I ran out with the flag, the defense did that and instantly screamed and cried about it.

Oh, and consider me on the "release a standalone CPMA game" bandwagon. I dunno how you could really market it to build an audience, but maybe separating from Q3 would be a step in the right direction to building that up. A new name might be in order though :)

I'm not understanding why everyone is hating on SyncError about your ideas thread. Have you guys EVEN LOOKED AT THAT THREAD? It's a mountain of bullshit. If SyncError has attempted to read every and all posts and consider each one, then I'm sure he's dead already.

First off, you never get overly zealous veterans to develop a sequel to a game that's supposed to be newb friendly. I don't know why Q3 diehards are asking for Q3 clone in web-browser form with ads? Just for the extra competition? But then I say to you, "what competition exactly?" A bunch of newbtards who'll play 2 minutes against you, get completely obliterated while they try to figure out which button is jump and which button is reload and then subsequently /quit...

QL is *not* supposed to be Quake 3 reinvented and perfected. It's a sideproject of id to test and practice making a web based game. It's a peripheral game... you guys should just stick with your current edition of Quake and expect QL to be something you play occasionally to waste time between pickup matches.

Quake Live is supposed to be an UPDATED version of quake 3, straight from IDs words in interviews...Also, it would take me at most 4 hours to go through the sandbox thread and write down the reasonable ideas and suggestions, and pull them all together in a more constructive outline, and send it straight to the devs...

Sure it is expected that most of these suggestions wouldn't be in the beta atm, but is it unreasonable to expect at least one or two of them? Quake live in its present state is pure shit, plain and simple. Its been in development for months now and they haven't taken a single suggestion out of this thread.

This is all fine and good with me except that THEY ASKED ESREALITY FOR THIS THREAD, somewhat of a letdown to see none of it actually being used, but thats just me. If they want to newbify the game then the least they could do is have said that, and not even bother asking for suggestions from the competitive community.

Go yourself and look at Carmack's keynote from last QCON. Notice how he emphasizes about the whole hardcore ideas, and brings up this message (resuming): "I miss the whole old school thing, we understand why there are people playing with picmip 5, we are looking forward on working in little details like device ms delay responses, and the rest of things the experienced players care a lot"

Obviously, noone of that is being delivered with QL (and he was talking about inside the QL section of the speech, not making it look like it was something only Q5 related).

About the newbies quitting after 2 minutes... how about fucking MATCHMAKING. The idea behind that is to maintain the same level of difficulty and have the players organiced, so the skilled player has a good time dueling vs other skilled players and the newbs have a good time killing each other until they progress, WITHOUT DUMBING DOWN THE GAME.

I really don't get that from the keynote. Yes, I saw the keynote and I got the impression that John Carmack is more interested in the technology and idea of having a web-based game rather than how/what the game actually is. He's far more interested, as a significant participant in the operations of id Software, in what medium id Software use (consoles, PC, mobile) and what technologies they uses (mega-texturing, hybrid ray-tracing and sparse voxel octree).

You'd have to be naive to think that John Carmack's driving force in life is to make the last remaining 100 die-hard Q3 fans happy with a release of Quake Live (which is just a Q3 clone but web-based). So I'd tell you to "get a clue." Stop the pipe-dreams and stop with the wishful thinking.

John Carmack's plan, from a supervisory position of the QL project, is to attract as much popularity as possible and to help build internal resources on how to develop web-based games.

Note: Just for the record, I'd love to see QL be a hardcore Q3 game. I'd love them to enhance and make a killer app of Q3 again and bring it back from the dead. Q4 is most like what you're trying to say the direction for QL will be. As you have noticed, Q4 both failed to capture oldschool players as much as it failed to introduce new players to the series. Not only was it shit out of the box, even fully patched, you still need to rely on a mod team to get any usable features. This has been true for every single game they have released.

I can count on one hand the number of players who are playing vanilla id content in any of the games they have released - right back to Doom 2. Suddenly, they're going to broaden the audience where devoted players, fanboys, mod makers, tournament organizers, and their own team have been failing for years? Do you happen to invest in bridges?

Again, what have you to say about the huge QL Sandbox thread? Yes, a shitload of responses, but actually read them, some of them make sense and are good ideas. People actually cared to write shit hopping to get a DECENT game, they are getting shit judging from people that played the beta.

What happened, again, is the same shit as always: Ruinning a great idea. Stop the fucking retarded "id Software is in the business to make money, not make 100 fans happy. That was my point.". The point of MATCHMAKING, was, AGAIN, to have happy both the clueless newbies (noob vs noob) and the experienced player (pro vs pro) in a enviorement where:

1) Noobs woulnd't give a shit about if the bridge2rail is shortened or not, because they don't even know it is possible to jump it, and if they are using matchmaking, they are playing vs other noob who also doesn't know how to make that strafejumping fucked up shit.

2) Pros can use QL as way to keep dueling in a high level of gameplay everywhere.

3) Noobs have a huge room of improvement until they become better, since the enviorement HASN'T BEEN DUMBED DOWN, treating them like retards.

Again, its a loss/loss situation and id Software is going to FAIL MISSERABLY again thanks to being hypocrites with the only community they have: the hardcore community (ESREALITY)

Sorry, but Quake 3 is has always been IRC with rockets.
Now while the game will probably suck more than baseq3, players can't even have proper conversations, having to press the fucken 'y' key to type a sentence, then open the console to look at what has been said by the three other people you are in discussion with.
This change makes no sense at all.

from what i could gather there isn't a big team working on ql atm. And all of the coders are busy with the webstuff. There was alltogether 1 man week spent on the gamecode till now and even that was already enough to make baseq3 very playable imho. So give them some time ffs.

Its a beta for a reason.
The big problem is, we don't know what id is planning to do.
So its quite stupid to give commentary now.
They can start implenting better brightskins, ... at all time.

the important duel maps are almost untouched. so stfu about the maps.. they are fine.
the random FFA maps are modified for funner matches, that's all.
you shouldn't care for them in the first place if you're so 1337.

also stfu about movement. gawd...
it's almost the same as jump height, distance etc. maybe it feels a little different.
dunno what the big hassle is about Quake3 movement?
it's been crap from the blackboard (compared to previous quakes).. all this bitching about little nuances make you look retarded and incapable of adapting to small changes.

i'm sure more time will be allocated for gameplay stuff later on.

Just like one of the Q4 patches when Syncerror specifically asked for list of improvements, requests and bugs. Then when the patch eventually arrived a year later, it had less than 0.001% of the stuff people spent time listing. I remember thinking "wtf have they been doing all this time"... It turned out their team were devoting their time on a more profitable game. So no prizes for guessing how Quakelive will turn out.

Remember, Syncerror is employed as PR, he will lie about the game to hype it. I wouldn't take these request lists seriously.

I PMed him on IRC before Quakecon and he said they were only HUD items. He also said he worked on them and even if they were not finished in time for QCon, he would still release them eventually. But that has not happened so :[

This is the first beta, I didnt expect that it would be something breathtaking.. I think they are testing registration, servers, removing bugs and things like that now. Then they will improve the game from what testers tells step by step. Be patience!

It requires far more skill and knowledge all the same. You then have to do MORE stuff after the rocket jump to get to the other side of the map too, whereas /kill transports you.

The only good use for /kill is Flag Pass (And maybe PU drop but I'm not that big a fan of this anyway) but I'm sure a "/flagdrop" (Which kills/drops flag when you have the flag) would be better.

Well the spawns were often even worse, now it's more or less just the SG pdm6 spawn which was happening with the non-bugged starting spawns anyway.

Maybe we should just have hooney mode style choosing of start spawns (coin flip for first pick).

That was being made WHILE i played it :P Fraps recorded my gameplay live. So its just as good as a demo since it recorded what I was doing. Look at the times you can see i didnt edit it. Other than the .avi being converted to wmv.

I cant score like that against q4max bots.

Q3 arena i beat the bots by 31 points. So the point still stands. I am uploading the q3 arena dm against bots now. Trust me, q4 is not such an easy of a frag game as q3 is and that is the reason you see so many q3-flameboys. So the idea that q4 sucks and thatt q3 is so much better, its not becuse there is no skill or competition in q4---ludicrous. Q3 is a frag game. I dont play it and both i frag and i frag easier in q3 than I do in q4 by far. q3 team arena is just an expansion pack for q3 anyways. And that map didnt hve the powerups. My point being that the bandwagon q4 is trash is just bandwagon talk and as well has the huge convenient bias that its easier to frag in q3 :P lol.

I understand that this is a qlive topic here, but i was just replying to the comical cartoon of the ladder of quakes being worse as they go along. The idea that q4 is worse than q3 i was just offering an opinion on that lol. It would hve been good if qlive was q4mp, I think it kinda sucks its q3 instead. So part of that comic is right---going backwards :P Who knows maybe id is bowing down the criticism and thinks q4 really does suck and that q3 is better quality, but that is just an assumption based on their decision to go backwards. I understand that q4mp is built on d3 engine but you can get q4 for 10 bucks now, they couldnt have used q4mp instead?????? Then make the qlive compatible with current q4---that would fregen rock. Buyt of course the hopes are crashed becuase they used q3. Q4 does deserve more players. It fregen pisses me off they using q3 when they could help q4 out big time if they used q4mp. I am resentful as f*ck over that. BS.

I was talking about the points on that map in q4 in ctf you dont score over 700 points. Just putting in my two cents when I see posts that seem trashy on q4---not to say it was you, just the comical picture. Q4 is not that fregen bad!!!! I understnad that q4mp probably wouldnt be playable in a brower or they wouldnt be able to port it to a browser, but maybe my seemingly off topic reply may help push the making of q4mp to be free as well. Q4 does have players---but it needs more and making the q4mp free would be very helpful as well.

One thing i am going to research is reviews on games from the community. One thing that stands out in quake is the harshness towards the game by its community. However, esr may be a bit harsher than most other sources, but it will be a good comparison to make. With all this harsh criticism its probably pretty hard to stay competitive, and especially harder to compete if other game communities are not so harsh as quake's is.

I scored a 2 in golf so clearly Golf is way more advanced and difficult than Q4. I score way higher than that in Q4 so Q4 must be easier.

The reason Q4 doesn't have players is BECAUSE of the gameplay. Q4 is the worst Quake to date in both popular vote and common sense. Why would id spend their time making a game for 17 people? You're a minority.

Q4 gameplay is GOOD (v1.4x)
Slide + nerfed rail + octogonal hitbox + lot of player accel, make it really interesting to play. Watched fox playing CTF ?

Q4 engine is the D3's one : awesome for single player experience with good feeling & amazing gfx but too buggy and with a pretty bad netcode (but with q4max etc... it's a bit better) for multiplayer.

And yes, since Q3 has been made for multiplayer only, it's pretty logical that the engine works better for MP than the Q4's one.

Saying that Q4 is shit and Q3 THE game is typical fanboism.
But saying that CPMA & Defrag are THE mods is true :D.

Play more warsow. :-P

Do you REALLY think id had the time to watch every single little detail put into q4? Were you there watching to see them do it every day. I am sure they got builds at certain times to play and give feed back. To think that they approved every single detail just makes u look like a moron. On top of that, q4 was a xbox 360 launch title. So there was probably pressure from microsoft to get the game done quicker.

Raven was giving the responsibility to make Quake 4. I believe that they just ran out of time to finish the whole game.

I followed the game religiously up until it's release. Played the first beta at quakecon, listened to id talk about Q4 there, bought magazines that had interviews and new info, and preordered the game in 2 places. Even if you want to try to argue that each and every detail wasn't overseen by id (their OWN words, not mine) then you can't possibly attempt to defend the fact that id approved Q4 to be released in the state it was in. This is the same company that brought you both the D3 engine and D3 itself.

It's not the end of the world if warsow isn't at the ESWC. It's not the end of the world if CPMA/cpm is played online only.
And for the 2008 ESWC, warsow was on the 1on1 FPS list, with games like UT3, but it was finally q3 which has been chosen...

Yep, so what ? It's like that since 2003, and I'm sure that it will stagnate, like it does for Q2/QW. And for Warsow it's a lil' different, there are more and more players each months.
And because there are people leaving the game each day, I should do that too, even if I still enjoy it ? And they are not leaving the game because it's a bad game, that's all the difference.

Who have failed ? CPMA is still played, defrag is still played, RA3 is still played, ESWC is still alive, ESR is still alive. It's not as much played as in 2002, sure, but still...

Re-read the end of my last post. And for you 3M++ games sold is a failure ? Right...
Doom IS a good single player game, and it's not only me who says that... Press rating anyone ? And YES, it was popular for its SP experience, but shit in MP.
And about the expansion, it was alright (for an expansion) in term of selling, it sure wasn't a success like the game itself but it's because there was nothing really new in comparison to the original game.

I have seen many people on my servers--thousands. I didn't really hear many saying q4 sucked actually. I think the few who are very good at being heard make their voice seem more salient--which gives the illusion they are the majority. I myself am pretty loud with opinion so i am not discounting myself here. But it is the few who are speaking majoritively. Thats one thing that came to my mind about them nerfing the railgun 3 times with damage and the ammo. What led them to that decision? Was it really a majority opinion or the few "loud" influencing the decision? They are good at making themselves sound like they are the majority.

I dont really think his post really endangers the game. but I scratch my head on removing kill---there are popular maps that are bugged and that you will fall off map lol kill command helps in those type situations lol.

But it brings the issue of a game needing to be consistent. I understand that if someone likes some feature in q3-they go to q4 and its not there and they get pisseed---I would have the same affect if something i like in q4 is taken out in the next quake.

But walter has done good at getting debate going---so actually he has helped.

Also, I AGREE on removing /kill ONLY in 1v1. In CTF, it makes sense. It balances the game out when you want to give the flag to other player, kind of a martir, unlike a /drop command. I think /drop in Q3 (at least VQ3) will not work, making a rush to the base too easy.

Just stop. id was the only one responsible for D3 and, if you bothered to follow the creation of Q4 at ALL, you'd have read the countless interviews where id had said that EVERY SINGLE DETAIL had to get their approval. There are not as many q4 haters as some of these jokers are trying to put forward. Id could do a register for free q4mp or something. Think about it, the server companies will appreciate it because they will make money on it so its not a total free venture even. It will make a lot of us happy because it will bring people into q4.

i think what some people dont understand is that id is trying to rebuild its brand reputation with regards to DM games. Remember they did say that they were going to be making an Arena like FPS based on the idtech5 engine. Free games have a natural edge when it comes to attracting players as long as they are marketed correctly, which id definitely has the funds to do. Q3 does have a certain pedigree status with gamers, even those that have never played it. id knows this, and can count on lots of gamers at least trying QL out, which in turn creates more potential customers for their idtech5 games.

id will have a strategy with this game, its not just about rereleasing q3, put it in the wider context people... id is a business, not a charity dedicated to satisfying nerds.

Removing console chat is a good thing imo. I am happy that they didn�t add that in Q4. The reason is because it significantly lessens the chance that someone accidently gives out a ref, or rcon password on there server if they don�t press the slash button, and at the same time in Q4 you can still look at chat history in a chat box that appears when you hit the Esc button. This is a great feature and I hope QL has this.

Most of the other things listed do indeed sound bad though, but as fjorgyn has said, it�s really stupid that you guys are taking this to heart so much, when almost all of you haven�t even played the game. And you know what? Even if QL is worse than Q3 I bet you it will still be fun, plus it will be something new, with new players, and new mods (maybe?). If it�s no fun for you, play Q3 for another 5 years I guess, and I hope you will feel differently with the next Arena themed Quake.

Also, to any of you pessimists that are saying QL will fail because the Quake, and UT type of games are not popular in today crowd of gamers.. You are right but it�s no reason to be so negative and say that QL will fail no matter what. You should be happy that id is trying to bring back the popularity of what used to be fun for a lot of people 10 years ago, and making a free version of a Quake game is a good way to do it.

The Jury is still out on this game, but how can anybody be surprised if it turns out to be god awful? The only thing of any importance is that perhaps things could be built off this new architecture. This being a free game - something like this has its advantages.

Games that are made today is for selling. I see games that are easy to get in and easy to play.

I have played games like q3, ut2k4, q4, ET and warsow and in all of them I had to play allot b4 I get few kills in match or on public.
But when you learn it it is so fun to make difficult tricks, kills and jumps.

I dont know why people say Quake4 sucks... because I had fun in it on pickups. Played against good players like fox and putka is very hard. Getting few frags on ctf pickup was very hard, but after learning movement and shooting it started to get more fun.

I have friend who has played COD1 and COD4 for max 4months.
He just start to get in the gaming and he likes COD4 allot.

He is getting good in it, but when I sayd lets play Enemy Territory it was fun for me because he didint get any frags on hole map. 20min rounds. I start to remember that I was the same when I started to play ET, but then I understand. In COD4 you can go in game without even knowing the maps and get frags... maybe not be the best but you will have fun. In ET fun starts after 20-50 times of playing. Thats what companys do. Make easy games.

But I will trye QL just to make my own opinion about it.

A lot of this has to do with a games rate of new players starting to play and the structure of finding games. COD4, and to a lesser extent CS, has a huge influx of new, inexperienced gamers at this point in its life. This is the biggest factor in a game feeling "easy for noobs" or not--the noobs have plenty of other noobs to play against.

You do have a point in saying that the actual game is easier for noobs to pick up and play, and you're totally right (I primarily play COD4). Compared to the Quake games or ET, COD4 was made with more technical complexities (ironsights, shooting through walls, sprinting, etc.) rather than depth (which usually comes to life via freedom, or lack of arbitrary rules, in games. On a side note, these games usually appear simpler to the average person)--if it makes any sense, COD4's gameplay is more deliberate and explicit than ET or Quake, which is played more implicitly giving the player more freedom to improvise.

Another huge factor I think you may be ignoring is the way the community is structured in COD4. The public servers that are visible from the in-game server browser are only used by new players or non-competitive players; both groups, by definition and in practice, aren't good players. Any real competition is found elsewhere, meaning joining a team and looking for games to play vs other teams on IRC, or pubbing in competitive public servers (usually called "warmups" or alike) that one finds via the forums the bulk of the competitive community visits. The community is tiered, the good players are invisible to the average gamer and the good players essentially play a different game than what's on the pubs--they remove a careful selection of the above technical complexities (perks, airstrikes, weapon restrictions) to create a more competitive experience, which has only come halfway to its fruition.

It's all a matter of when you start playing a game and how many new players there are. When W:ET was new you could go on public servers and rape almost the first time you played. If the game doesn't have an influx of new players then the skill level on public servers rises. However when most competitions are gone the average skill level drops a lot as most of the high skilled and skilled players leave, which Q4 is a very good example of. Most of the really skilled players left almost a year ago.

Getting frags on a Q4 CTF pickup has never been really hard, however that is not the point of CTF. Frags in CTF should only be for helping the team, not for getting score. Only def and mid should try to frag enemy attackers unless there is a powerup or one of the flags is out of base. Unfortunatly Spontan CTF pickup is mostly people who think CTF stands for Chase-The-Frag.....

I don't get why people are questioning id's ability to make competitive deathmatch games because of the performance of their recent titles. Both D3 and Q4 were almost exclusively singleplayer games--mutliplayer was only an afterthought.

Actually Q4 had two separate teams working on it, and the second one was working exclusively on multiplayer (with id supervising). So it wasnt afterthought, they just thought that was good enough for us (both id and raven).

Ironic how in the Q3test the biggest issue was also the movement. History really has a tendency to repeat itself. Back then, It was also the situation where community wanted something else than the man in charge (Carmack), but in the end he did the smart thing and listened to players and the game became another icon. Finally someone see the big picture! I don't see why they just cut the game completely and just have an empty program which launches with adverts for people to view. They'd get a shit load ad revenue that way, people will just want to see more and more of the adverts and profits will go through the roof!

you kids who are shit talking quake live really need something better to do with your free time. InsignifiCUNTS like yourselfs need to realize that this is the first time a game has been delivered through a web browser in this form. All you guys do is bitch about how you want that quake 3 gameplay that you've lived and breathed for so long to be in Qlive, but the fact is q3 really doesnt have a huge hope of coming back. ID is simply testing a new form of delivering a game, and doing a fucking great job at it. Besides, dont you fucktards remember hearing that the point of qlive was to workout a solid system to deliver quake 5 in?

Core Quake players hating the guts out of Quake Live.. I can't say I'm surprised. So.. is this the official death of DM FPS then? :/

And I'm not trying to be sarcastic. I really hope QL will be good. After Q4 and UT3 didn't work out, it's basically the last chance for a genre that I kinda like a lot..

I don't think it is the "death". I mean sure, you've got some quake3 diehards (more accurately CPMA or OSP I'd wager, most people hear don't like the default settings) with the logo carved in their heads who will never be swayed, but id has a perfect opportunity to prove others wrong here. Obviously, expectations are much lower now, but you can seriously take advantage of that, funnily enough. The hype of Doom3 came to bite them in the ass in the end, so they learned from that. Yet now, they can really come out and show that they can make a pretty damn good game. It is much easier to do that with lowered expectations than insurmountable ones (ala Doom3).

What about the thought that if QL was to grab a few thousand 'NEW' players.. that a few hundred of those will port themselves to CPMA and the real deal?

Guess no one thought of that.

The beta was previously stated as to not go into testing until it was presentable. That is why this whole issue started, not because of "whiney pros"

Perhaps if the beta testing was public and had more player input MORE people could play and the game could become MORE refined and newbie friendly, and STILL appeal to the hardcore players. We don't want people moving back to Quake 3, we want a better game. Guess no one thought of that! (Jackass)

Then again it is easy to act like you are a good guy just because you back id up faithfully as if it is your second religion. Lets learn from past mistakes, not repeat them.
