For one, I don't see any link to the source, which they would need to supply due to the GPL. Additionally, this seems to incorporate several user-created mods, and since this seems to be the first anyone here is hearing of this, I doubt that they have the proper permission to use them.

If they're foreign, legal action will never happen anyway. I'd just like to see it be totally legit if people want to take it seriously as a replacement or such.

First of all it's pretty illegal to get a perfectly working copy of Q3 through the installer. Second as p0rt mentioned, they will probably not tolerate much traffic so probably will be down/slow a lot. I'm positively surprised you are using Q3E binary instead of the CQ3 crap. I'm not so positively surprised you are using CPMA as mod base, I'm not saying you should use anything else but how about making your own Q3 mod? Basically the web interface is just a cloak there's nothing new.

didnt test it but needs ql movement for sure, original q3 movement is bland as fuck, even ql movement is dissapointing but atleast its better.

the site has to be completely legal in order to be considered any kind of replacement for QL though.

Then at least we get a legit copy of ql and all the features everyone has been asking for. And if he can't succeed then we know bethesda is truly blocking this game (ql) from progressing forward.

Nice idea: some people making content(maps), some people working with modifications, some others just managing www-infrastructure around - such kind of job separation should be pretty efficient comparing to singleplayercompany-mode :)

As a substitute for QL, it might be already better for the hardcore. However, we definitely must look further, as I believe the devs already have, considering they've already put that much work into this.
Things to consider:

1) The legality - this is a major concern. We might all enjoy playing on a hack, but the professionals won't. Tournaments and coverage simply won't happen, and I'm not even talking about popular websites being able to link to the site.

2) Social and matchmaking features - they must be at the very least on par with QL, and if we really want anything to happen, they should include a decent matchmaking system. Should probably include site features and customization too. This is where the majority of the work comes in. Would anybody be willing to do it is the question.

3) The load - simply put, can they expand, have a player base of tens of thousands of players and still have the site usable, or even up, for that matter?

4) Gameplay - unless it overshadows ql or just becomes a hub for the cpm-tards, it should emulate the QL gameplay, regardless of whether we prefer it or not. Else, players can't easily move from QL to this, and it's another fracture in the community. I wish I had an idea whether this is possible or not. Fortunately, if everything else was perfect, this wouldn't be an issue.




I'm perfectly aware of the fact that this style of writing popular with ESR people, including scrutinizing projects and their prospects like they were my own is silly, but IMO, these are things that should be discussed in order to truly realize what this is and what this can become. I mean, we it could be another mod that steals away a part of the community, it could be a devastating split and it could, potentially, be something greater than QL, especially considering that id does not seem motivated to do anything about the game's demise. People posting here seem to have varied opinions, but a decent analysis is yet to be given.

Judging everything right now seems foolish. I, for one, would like a comment on each of these parts by the devs, or at least people qualified to analyze these things (especially the legal issues).

It is illegal. The installer downloads pak0.pk3 (all vanilla q3 media/maps) aswell as the qu4kezer0.pk3 which contains QL maps and media. That's the illegal part of it, if they removed that it would actually require Quake III Arena which would make it harder to install, which would make it less appealing to new players...

Use a different client (CNQ3.exe) and have pak0.pk3 installed. Had the same problem and I fixed it.

First impression: Installing it takes a whole lot more work than QL does (implying that this site wants new players.)

There were ~5 people that couldn't get the game to work, most of them left (including me).

This thing does what it says, it tracks stats and provides a more friendly web-browser server browser. However, I still think QL offers more interactivity and social features.
The only huge upside has to be the inclusion of CPMA/Defrag and custom maps. Which again, mostly serve to veterans and addicted CPMAers. No offence to either of them, I personally just don't see CPMA being competitive on a bigger level. (it's still fun to play though!)

One thing that I really like is the built-in IRC client (or some sort of web-chat for everyone to use), QL should get one as well, not everyone is on IRC and not everyone will download it so he can idle on empty channels, but with every player connecting on IRC (or similar chatting service) everytime he joins QL, things would be different.

Why do I know this won't happen to QL? because this would actually make the game somewhat better, and devs obvsiously don't want that. [1]

Further, QL has some sort of integrity and simplicity, plus a much, much bigger userbase.
For now, QL takes the cake, let's see where this project takes us.

[1]: People left/wanted to leave focus testing because id did nothing to keep the game alive and didn't listen to testers while simply ignoring the pressing matters.

well one thing is for sure. For something that is only out of the box since march, they've sure done a lot with it already.

The point here is that this is a potential avenue that can be accessed without the brick wall that is id software. If these devs are actually open to changing the things that need to be changed (and make sure to be following all the applicable laws), it would completely invalidate the entire development of QL. They already have the hard part done, so they're more than capable of implementing things like GTV/ladders/stats/etc.

Remember, this guy isn't even getting paid for this, and he's already pretty much caught up to QL.

Can't QL take some lf these ideas on board. It looks way more appetising, than QL, with loads more features. I would like to try defrag on QL and see more maps for sure. I know it sounds like it doesn't work as well, but id should take note and give us payers something more, considering this is all for free?

Yeah, it's great for map makers, I wish QL would allow this. Sadly, they only buy maps from Shadow, who in my humble opinion CAN'T MAKE A FUCKING DECENT DUEL MAP. Some of his TDM maps are great, but duel? All of them are completely the same and un-fucking-playable.

Mapping competition with textures allowed by id would be great, but it won't happen :(

Concrete Palace, Wargrounds, and Sorrow are miserable duel maps. I was very surprised when Sync labeled them as such. Maybe some kind of TDM would work on them, but not even convinced of that.

You need to point your browser to use the WEB LAUNCHER instead of the actual Q3 application. That was the problem. =\

it can use an existing q3 directory.. just point q3launcher.exe to your cnq3 or whatever you use when you play cpm

Some ideas

- Make that small magnifying glass icon permanent. Didn't see it for a while, and it's really nice. Don't make it invisible maybe?

- Allow for region changing. Maybe some form of filters. This will be useful when there are more servers

- The maps section is nice. Maybe offer a "download all" option?

- Chat is a little buggy, I'm sure you can tweak that. Maybe hide the SYSTEM messages? or put that in a different section?

- Maybe show information about each server? For example, if I'm a VQ3 player, this would be frustrating as most servers would be CPM. But, if you could put what the gametype is of each server at that time in its info, that would help. Maybe after the game mode? Instead of "CTF - Players: 1 of 16" you could have "CTF - CPM - 1/16"

- Implement something like this NOW - http://tf2lobby.com/ - Don't change the site to make it like that. The site is great right now, really nice. Instead, offer a lobby room or something. This would work well for pickups and scrims. Maybe have designated pickup servers, and allow a queue in it. People can "ready up" on the site and offer a chat for that specific pickup lobby room. That way teams and captains can be decided. Offer users to make lobbys. That way regulars are more likely to happen. If I see a "uscpmctf room", I know who to expect, and what to expect. Let people name them like they would servers.

This way, pickups could be done extremely easily through the website, as opposed to un-fun and ancient irc.

- I noticed a server autodownloaded different simple items in a pk3. They look like QL simple items. Why? Are the CPMA ones bad for some reason?

- Members should be sorted by something else than name. Maybe most active averaged for a week?

- More sorting options. Sort by server gameplay type, player numbers, region, etc.

- Do everything you can to keep this legal. I saw that apparently some QL CA maps are in this. Maybe even maps like T7 and T9. If it's illegal, or risks being shut down, don't do it. Honestly, I doubt anyone wants to play maps like CA1 or 2, when RA3 maps are readily available. QL content isn't important.

Well this game is having the same problem as many CPMA servers. It keeps booting me out of a server, and I have all the necessary files.

use pageup in console to find the exact error message.

it's likely you have the incorrect version of cpma and/or unpatched quake.

It said I had a missing shader (error: couldn`t find scripts "tokyo.shader"), so I tried putting in tokyo.shader in a scripts folder in both baseq3 and cpm, it still kicks me out though.

This is all nice and good but it's only good so long as id Software sees this and reacts. They need to see what these guys are doing and take something from their formula. Other than that, I think fraglove is actually doing more harm than good for the community, it's dividing us even more. Aren't we already the most splintered gaming community out there? Some people are qw or die and some people are q3 or die. Some people are vanilla and some people are promode. We're so divided it's just fucking ridiculous. Now let's look deeper into ql. ctf is completely inactive. tdm...must I even say anything even the euros know by now. so what does that leave, some painfully disgusting vq3 ffa, some horrible public clan arena that has adopted all the ctf and tdm players that are walking around like lost puppies and duel which is the same damn people playing the same damn maps everyday. You are so wrong on this point. People that don't know how to strafe won't download the mods and learn all console commands to get it working, just to see if they like the game.

Skill-matching is far from perfect in QL, but it still keeps cypher and rapha out of tier 1/2/3, surely there are a lot of people abusing it and it doesn't work properly sometimes, but saying that no skill-matching is more noob-friendly is downright stupid and you know it.

1) pros/noobs can play 2 up/down
2) tierslummers/stackers
3) no autobalance
4) shuffle in ctf is a joke
5) blue always gets 1st spec in (if game is tied), eg: too predictable
6) no support for ctf by id. TDM gets the spotlight (despite its non-existence in NA)
7) incubus
8) no new ctf maps worth noting

I don't know who you are but i thank you for your honesty. Sadly, none of this matters so long as syncerror continues looking the other way and allowing people to have unlimited #'s of alt accounts. Clan arena will sadly b the last mode standing soon.

Some ideas

- Make that small magnifying glass icon permanent. Didn't see it for a while, and it's really nice. Don't make it invisible maybe?

- Allow for region changing. Maybe some form of filters. This will be useful when there are more servers

- The maps section is nice. Maybe offer a "download all" option?

- Chat is a little buggy, I'm sure you can tweak that. Maybe hide the SYSTEM messages? or put that in a different section?

- Maybe show information about each server? For example, if I'm a VQ3 player, this would be frustrating as most servers would be CPM. But, if you could put what the gametype is of each server at that time in its info, that would help. Maybe after the game mode? Instead of "CTF - Players: 1 of 16" you could have "CTF - CPM - 1/16"

- Implement something like this NOW - http://tf2lobby.com/ - Don't change the site to make it like that. The site is great right now, really nice. Instead, offer a lobby room or something. This would work well for pickups and scrims. Maybe have designated pickup servers, and allow a queue in it. People can "ready up" on the site and offer a chat for that specific pickup lobby room. That way teams and captains can be decided. Offer users to make lobbys. That way regulars are more likely to happen. If I see a "uscpmctf room", I know who to expect, and what to expect. Let people name them like they would servers.

This way, pickups could be done extremely easily through the website, as opposed to un-fun and ancient irc.

- I noticed a server autodownloaded different simple items in a pk3. They look like QL simple items. Why? Are the CPMA ones bad for some reason?

- Members should be sorted by something else than name. Maybe most active averaged for a week?

- More sorting options. Sort by server gameplay type, player numbers, region, etc.

- Do everything you can to keep this legal. I saw that apparently some QL CA maps are in this. Maybe even maps like T7 and T9. If it's illegal, or risks being shut down, don't do it. Honestly, I doubt anyone wants to play maps like CA1 or 2, when RA3 maps are readily available. QL content isn't important.

The fraglove site/project isn't complete yet, so don't go spamming ESR with bugs and problems and other mindless things.

Personal opinions aside, this site is pretty good, and for one person + a few helpers, it's quite an accomplishment. Too bad someone like Ray happened by, and is now "hunting" this site as much as he's hunting inc and sync, which are pretty much polar opposites.

Sync very rarely plays QL. He usually only does at updates with new content or when he feels like giving players a chance to earn his Stonekept award. If you check his match history you will find it is mostly blank.

- An enhanced weapon damage balance: railgun damage decreased from 100 to 80, lightning gun damage from 8 to 7.

- A new hud: Fully customizable huds using hudconfigs.

- Accuracy display.

- Picmip support: cg_nomip disables the picmip on many shaders (e.g weapon shaders).

At least one (eu) CA server is populated in the evening. And according to the site people are playing quite regularly in the duel ladder. But only ~150 registered users so far.

Imo its far more legit than fraglove. From what I gathered in this thread, FL is basically a weblauncher for CPMA and they have bundled existing q3 mods into one package. Imo thats the wrong approach. Thats nice for CPMA players, not for players coming from QL. Aftershock looks like a complete rewrite of QL. It uses OpenArena and the source of the mod (I assume website too) is available (has a SVN link at least). They ported the maps and work on retexturing, made new models/skins, have working stat-tracking, etc... The changelog looks active. Compared to q3 you can see how they try to emulate QL (+acc or bloom for example) but make nice addons (like rocket/grenade trails \o/) QL seems to lack. I definitely like the idea.

There are problems ofc. It looks like crap compared to QL (if anyone plays with picmip 0...) and has no users. So if you want to play it (from NA I guess) you may have to set up a server for yourself and spread the word.

easiest way to to connect to servers, is to get the user to register a new file extension to open with the game, like a mp3 playlist with the server and ip in, but can just make a new extension with a freeware script install maker, i do in it in next q43a

or simpletons, get someone to make a simple web launcher app for the user to install, that registers a new file extension, and launches the game, and works like irc to connect to a chan ://

if you have a simple web launcher app, it can probaly stay hooked to the game and connect to other servers without having to shutting the game down

True, AS does not use qstats or any other external stats tracker. The system used is selfwritten and quite similar to cpma's xml statistic output.

xml sucks, and you cant search for buddies, if a site has a buddy list, it cannot do an auto search, and give you a tooltip with server info the buddy is on

Honestly, if we're sitting here looking at migrating to a new game, Aftershock is the best choice imo. Its completely free, leans more toward QL than Q3, and it is actively developed.

And to be frank, Fraglove will almost definitely get shut down sooner or later. Even if its not technically illegal (I'm no expert on these matters), its close enough for id to send a cease-and-desist and make things a pain in the ass. Aftershock is 100% open source and untouchable.

The only way fast-paced FPS gaming will continue to survive, much less thrive, is with community support. No commercial developers who need to make money off of it, no licensing issues, no financial or legal barriers for newcomers to navigate, and most importantly nobody but the players to decide how the game evolves.

I'm away from my home computer at the moment, but if there are no NA servers for Aftershock I would be happy to setup a duel server when I get home Tuesday. Ping will probably not be great for anyone outside of the Midwest, but I've got an extra box laying around. Would at least be usable to try it out. Who knows, maybe it has awesome netcode that will somehow make servers on a residential connection feasible. :D

Don't forget, that Quake 3 is banned in some countrys (like here in germany). That means a) I cannot buy it if I don't own it already (not even via Steam) and b) there probably won't be any big LAN event hosting Quake 3 in germany. You're not allowed to do any advertisement for it. Imo thats a big problem for the game. QL is free with ads, Q3 isn't.

There will probably never be another big Q3/QL LAN anywhere, so I wouldn't worry much about Germany not having any. What will you do when QL shuts down?

The reality may be, that Qx is only good as an esport. Most people who play video-games do not want to play competitively. They just want to relax and have some fun in between their work or school days. How many people continue playing organized sports, after they grow up and have a job and family? Practically no one. They do continue though, watching organized sports. They also continue playing casually (mostly in the form of card or video games).

The solution is to marry casual gaming with competitive. Arcade games and esports tournaments are the perfect marriage of casual and competitive. If you're tripped out on acid, you can lose yourself in an arcade game. If you're on acid, but not completely gone, maybe you're thrilled by the professional tournament. The same is true for ecstacy. Who needs a rave, when you have a good gaming expo?

You think Americans aren't stupid? How many of them still think Iraq was responsible for 9/11? The fact is, arcades already profit enough to maintain a permanent venue. Add esports (Quake), tournaments to that equation, as an attraction, and you have something even better: a solid base, coupled with the star power arcades are missing. Watching from home is fine, but as any professional sport shows, a physically present audience is the basis of success. The arcade model provides that presence.

mdD already have a database with all the records, a server list in browser, and it only takes a greasmonkey script (you can find it on mdD forum) to join it via your browser.

Clicking on any server will show "player x joined y" on IRC, while this doesn't really mean he managed to get the game working.

People who joined 5 times in one minute probably didn't switch servers, just couldn't get in the game.

You completely miss the point of the entire thread, and the interest in this project. Nobody here thinks that this is going to save the game, or even bring in new players. The reason people are interested in this is for something to use AFTER QL dies - not before. This is an alternative to a disorganized Q3 community, and that is it. At best, the community will be a fraction of what it is even now, and that's not much.

You need to get over the idea that QL will ever have a future, especially since you have no future in any iteration of the game.

Quakecon wasn't in july, so of course the numbers are down. Last year, Quakecon barely increased the activity anyway - there will obviously be diminishing returns for this year, and a marginal uptick for August.

As for Aftershock, it's just as dead: users online (today): 0 (21). Both of these games will see an increase in players when QL dies, but neither are going to have more than a few dozen players. Aftershock will likely be less popular due to openarena alone. Such a small community will be even worse for you, since the people stubborn enough to stick around will all be exponentially better than you.

Oh, and both aftershock and fraglove are still completely vulnerable to cheats.

Dead as in shut down, not dead as in 17 players. It's already "dead" as in players/growth, and will soon be "dead" as in "not playable, even if you wanted to".

i give it another year. they probalby want to figure out how many people resubscribed and how many cancelled, and they'll repeat that process till next year at which time they'll probably make a final decision.Although those google trend numbers are bad enough to warrant a shutdown now.

the traffic to the quakelive.com website isn't reflective of the number of premium and pro subscribers they have. these are 2 different values, and even with less traffic they could be making more money for all you know.

It's not even a service, it's literally a browser front-end for community mods (CPMA, RA3, Defrag etc.). Hate it all you want, but that is what it is.

Apart from being slightly more accessible, it's no change from Q3 and it isn't meant to one up or even compete with QL.

Going back to q3 + cpma is much harder than just migrating to fraglove.

Last time i spoke to stahlaal he said they take cpma 1.48 as is and don't mod it.

Well I managed to play a few games on here. While my connection wasn`t great because of there only being French / Luxembourg servers and my mouse jerked from bad mousepad... I found it very enjoyable, perhaps more so than Quake Live.

First of all the community seems very friendly. It doesn`t appear to share the same over-the-top elitist attitude that is prominent in the majority of online Quake communities.

Second, they`re actually willing to try new things. Of course the site managers put new maps up when they come out, etc. but you may be asking, "do they actually get played?" - absolutely. Some relatively fresh maps like Ballistophobia and Achromatic have been enjoyed, not just once but in many games, at different times, by different players. As for older maps, they don`t seem to mind playing the more overlooked old maps as well. True ra3map1 and ra3map11 have the most plays in the Rocket Arena 3 pool... but that doesn`t necessarily mean they won`t play a round or two of ra3map2, (which I actually did today) or if we`re talking ThreeWave, you won`t have much trouble organizing games on arenas other than cp1, cp9, etc. Now compare that to the the endless /callvote map campgrounds spree that plagues Quake Live.

True, it`s not terribly active, but compared to when I first discovered the site, it seems to have slightly increased in activity and if people can promote it more, (besides on the QL forums, unless you want a ban) spread the word, and perhaps even help in the project such as donating servers, etc. if they can - it`d be the ultimate revival of Quake III as we know it.

So yeah, there`s my "testimonial". If you haven`t tried it yet, do it now! This is the kind of stuff that the Quake community needs, no doubts about it.

Next logical step seems to be more servers, everywhere. USA, Europe, etc. Then allow people to give you their IP's of their own servers to you. Get the browser bigger with servers, maybe instead of the Map names on the servers, you could have the Server name there instead. Allow people to give them that option when they get to add their IP. I don't know, something to think about.

Displaying the populated servers on the beginning of list wouldn't hurt too.

Aftershock leans more toward QL than Q3 which is quite bad. QL failed for a reason.
Q3 survived over 10 years

there is no logic in saying QL is shit and Q3 is good, they are roughly the same besides weapon balance, people would still just play quakelive and use irc and forums as a community like the past 12 years

FragLove opened up some servers for the US and Germany. The DEU servers were provided by a-ones.de. This is great news for North American and German players and I hope it brings in more people.

Once again I highly recommend it for anyone who wants more content and features which QL doesn't provide. And sorry, but Aftershock looks like crap. It runs on OpenArena which means that many of the maps it runs will have missing textures or other technical issues. The online interface is messy and cluttered imho, while navigating FL is like taking a walk in the park. I just can`t see what would be better about it other than the fact that OA is free. (But even then, you can buy Q3 for a cheap price these days on eBay, much less than a QL subscription)

To be fair, the Aftershock team has re-skinned most maps so that they look fine. I know for sure that ztn, aero, and nodm9 work. Haven't tried much else.

i was really excited about this, i would prefer the cpma mod over QL anyday and the cq3 gameplay over anything aswell but lets face the truth. it has no players. it doesnt matter how good this game is, if you running around in an empty duel server for 30 mins hoping for someone actually connecting to play a game and not config tweaking. it not so easy to get a game going in QL, but that amount of time what is the threshold for me that worth to wait for playing a game. now as ladders being settled for QL i dont see much survival for this sorry.
