so maybe you should try advertise it as an elite game instead of trying to appeal to the mass ...

then you will have a higher chance of attracting the hardcore gamers, since everyday joe won't play quake for long anyway

q4 had rather bad reviews and the mp wasn't really worked on at its release,

also it was not a game from id but from raven,

also q3 as a game for competition was not anymore relevant and the brand quake was not anymore known to so many gamers, unlike sc1 which everyone knew about and which was the most relevant rts until the release of sc2,

so in terms of popularity of the name and also popularity of the brand (Blizzard might the most succesful brand in terms of games quality right now on the pc market, only valve and nintendo might have a similar recognition) sc2 has quite some marketing advantages compared to ql

I think QL is fun once you know how to play it, the same is true for SC2, you also have to work yourself into it and get acquainted to its mechanics

sc2 esport-scene is the most forced thing in the history of e-sports tbh. the "demand" as you say came from blizzard money and marketing and the legacy of bw, not the game itself. the game wasnt even in beta before it was an 'e-sport'

quake needs a proper reboot with millions in funds for tournaments and marketing to be comparable (alongside a massive budget for making the game)

theres no risk of spliting community, mostly because PQL is pr0 only...

…until one day a real man (like fox) from the real quake, will come to play in their own maps...

If, like I think, these newer popular games such as LoL will grow stale for players and audiences alike, then, maybe in the future Quake will again get a bit more visibility and a resurgence will take place, even if the resurgence is on a minor scale.
