you make an ultra high poly model to bake out the normal maps. this gives you basically a texture with fake lighting effects. from there you can go down in polys and have the detail come in through the textures.

Thus the magic of using bumpmapping/normalmapping and adding parallax mapping if your computer can handle it.

The models will most likely be made high poly to make a normalmap rendering then edited down to a lowpoly model around 800-1200polys or so.

So it really isnt an issue as the eyecandy will still be scalable imho.

the "interior" gives you a great base to work from and then just have multiple "exteriors" like a thicker one that best represents the hitbox, or maybe one that has some sort of "fins" on the sides to make it a nice flat target, or a thinner one that uses less screen real estate for teammates etc.

from this model it looks like there are some very talented guys working on this and with a modern business model and a game that is promoted appropriately for 2013/14 this could be something big.

Many of the little details will be made into materials for the model is my guess. It is hard to make a "2D" material for a 3d model without modeling it. Especially when it is so detailed.

I hope you are still able to force enemy team colors, the skins the teams make for themselves can be visible by spectators and thus tournament streams etc. But the hypothetical progamer me would not want to play against a white model when against SK Rapha, an orange model when playing against fnatic.Strenx and a purple model when I'm playing against M.cypher.

What you're both missing is that the game needs to have a decent middle ground between big playerbase and skilful distinctive gameplay.

Competitive FPS might not need more then a few models, but what 2gd seems to not be getting at all is that the people do not play games because they're competitive, they play because 1) they're fun, 2) not hard to get in to, 3) get an easy game going with their friends, 4) they have nice graphics. If he keeps pushing RB in this direction, it could be the best game in the universe, but still more niche and with less players then Quake.

What's annoying me the most is (at least in older 2gd RB rants) that he wants to make a game with spotlight and competitive focus on 1v1, where no one gives a fuck about dueling anymore aside from 200 people on ESR. While it might be fun to watch, it won't really make the game more attractive to anyone but the Quake crowd, and the Quake crowd is already playing Quake.

Basically, however it turns out, it ain't gonna be any more successful then BLC, and specially not more successful then Quake.

I have to disagree with a lot of what you wrote.

The way the industry is shaped today you basically have 2 concerns when designing a multiplayer game. you either care about sales, go down the COD route and pump out a new iteration of your game every year or you make an effort to have as many players who tried your game keep playing it. A significant part of why players keep playing a game instead of jumping to something new is that competition is a very powerful instinctive drive. Comptetition isn't only going to lans to play the world's best, it can also be improving from bronze to silver in SC2 ladders. Obviously it's imperative for the game to be fun and ease of access should be a given these days (wink wink id software), I also agree that appealing visuals are a factor.

Mentioning a focus on 1v1 to the broader public is IMO a smart move, since it's the mode most associated with quake. 2GD can promote this game to the less knowledgabe players by pointing out the high skill and intensity that can be observed in well produced vods, some even with him as a commentator or player. It doesn't on the other hand mean that TDM/CTF won't be a polished mode, just that it's the best choice for him ride the duel train in terms of promotion.

I also have to disagree on the potential playerbase. Brood War has been a niche game in the west for a long time, the amount of players may have been bigger than quake's at this point but a niche nonetheless. Now look at how SC2 has revitalized, or reborn if you will, the franchise and to some part the entire genre from a competitive viewpoint. I can't see anything indicating that this can't be done for the arena-fps genre as well given that the game has a modern infrastructure around it like SC2, LoL, etc.

Of course I'm not saying that it will be a success but saying that it won't have a chance is stupid and foolish.

I can tell you 90% of the SC2 players playing the campaign, UMS, 2v2-4v4 with friends, vs bots etc, _and_ since theyre into the game probably sometimes going to watch some tournament on streams. The games graphics not good but alright, and it could soak up every player that liked BW and W3 for legacy reasons, not to mention all the WoW / Diablo fans checking out aswell since its a Blizzard title.

Your broodwar & sc2 comparisons are out of place, brood war was a national sport in Korea. A NATIONAL SPORT. Being a Blizzard game and as such having a shitload of hype surrounding it based off of Korea success and selling the dreams of being an e-Superstar to every white nerd...Only way sc2 could have failed is to be done by some other company under some other name, basically to not be related to starcraft in any possible way.

As far as 1v1 goes, no, it's not a smart move. Quake and all similar arena games should be presented as team games. You can't play duel in team with your friends, duel is too hard to get in to, and is usually not fun at all with so much item management to take care of it feels more like a 9-to-5 job then playing a game.

All the successful fps titles in previous years were team games, CS, halo, etc. Quake concept of elite 1v1 ego shooter has been long dead. Get over it.

Saying that SC is WC2 in space is ridiculous and just dismissing a huge difficulty in game desing that has put SC2 lightyears ahead of it's time like that just shows how much you know about this. If you ever played WC2 you'd know that orcs and humans have been a mirror of each other, every single unit or structure has an exact counterpart on the other side. Now, do a mind experiment and go from 2 mirrored races (so de-facto only designing one race) to 3 uneven races, this is a HUUUUUGE difference in game design.

It's beyond me how you can read my posts where I rant about what makes a game modern (hint: online multiplayer, matchmaking, ladders, community features, etc.) and say such a thing.
If anything your post proves my point, street fighter hasn't changed much apart from the infrastructure around the game and it continues to thrive. Quake did the opposite, hell the current quake is one from 10 years ago recycled with little more than a server browser and a chat client around it and it's not even close in popularity.

Yes that is exactly what I'm saying, although the RTS genres has had lots of big sellers like the total war series or command and conquer, not one has ever had the multiplayer polish that blizzard games had. Why do you think blizzard keeps releasing balance patches for games that have been released for 5 years or longer, no other game studio could justify that and besides they probably have released one or two sequels within that timeframe. Going back to my original point how you either have to make players keep playing your game for a long time or just push out games in quick successsion, blizzard has actually planned SC2 as a mixture of both now that I think of it, they release the SP campaing and the bigger MP rebalance as a trilogy.

Just want to add something to think about.

The eSports landscape actually shows us that multiple titles from the same genre can coexist if they're built well like LoL, DotA 2 and to some extent HoN or SC:BW and WC3 in Korea or even street fighter, marvel vs capcom, super smash brothers or dead or alive. Considering this you could assume this is another piece of evidence that no studio could match the blizzard polish in the RTS genre.

there are still 2 natural resources in starcraft, just like in warcraft,
you have to build energydepots to build more units, you have to build upgrade facilieties for classes of your units to upgrade armor, attack ...
o.k. they have made different races (in wc2 only the magicians were different I think) ... that's the only thing they improved in starcraft ...

what you call modern, i.e. online play is not necessarily true, there exist ports for playing street fighter ii online ... you were able to play warcraft 2 online in mplayer or something ... anyway, being able to play online instead just in lan is not what I'd consider modern (back then the technology were not so good, nowadays it makes absolutely no difference if you design a game for lan or internet) ... multiplayer, matchmaking, ladders are just standard features that any game intended to be played in multiplayer should provide ...
I don't really know about community features though, is there any social network provided by capcom/blizzard, or a big forum with moderators by capcom/blizzard? I guess the scenes just gather in scenesites ... not in the official portals. .. I played diablo 3/sc2 in battlenet, but there was not really some kind of scene ... some kind of esports portal providing commentated matchvideos, interviews with players, socialising features ... not just some forum list with topics ...

these games lack and dumb down ... even q3a was a regression ... they use machinegun instead of blaster/boomstick, to let newbies have some frags ... no aircontrol ... at least in ql they integrated some double jumping and bunny hopping by now ... this version of quake is at least not anymore dumbed down that much ...

yeah there is coexistence ... people play cod, halo, left 4 dead ... titles that really challenge you to the max in terms of player movement, weapon choice, positioning on the map, etc. (this was irony) ... dumbed down *newbie friendly* games have taken over multiplayer and singleplayerwise games have been dumbed down to console gamer standards with their xbox controller ... anyway why do you speak of dota 2, even though it's not released yet? for now I think there is only LOL in this type of genre ... what is LOL? some kind of multiplayer diablo, only because dota was some warcraft mod does not mean it has anything to do with rts games ... it's more some diablo pvp ... but your start out as teams and your chars have to build up experience within the match ... it's good, it's different ... but how are LOL, DOTA2, HON different? They're all just dota clones in the end ... given that the terrain is just flat, you only have limited movement possibilities with point and click movement, these games differ as much from each other as all the wow clones ...
in fps games you can still create unique environments, change movement possibilities etc. to differentiate out your game ...
but in rts or dota or also street fighter like beat m up games you can't do this ... all the same, marketing dictates what you will buy next of this gamegenre ...

You argue like there's been huge difference in FPS games but its still walking and shooting, and trust me designing fps weapons is a cakewalk in comparison to what you face when trying to design an RTS.

yes blizzard for example provides the ability to create and join channels in battle.net, so basically they provide you with an ingame, cross game IRC, there's also forums, interaction with community through youtube videos to show off new stuff, communitcation with the community (no secrecy about features), you also have eSport news on the blizzard sites to have people tune in for streams.

casual players that couldn't give two shits about esports don't organize in forums or on scenesites but they might enjoy the social and community features directly built into the game client.

these aren't even the bigger points, IMO it's the integrated matchmaking that really sets these games apart from quake live. A casual player after a long day of work doesn't want to look around for ages to find a good game, he wants to hit the matchmaking button and be in a good (read equally skilled) match.

You stated like 5 times already that you don't know about other games than quake. To have the nerve to say "I don't know about them but they dumb down" is something special.

What you're probably trying to get at is that games in general are designed to be less challenging these days but IMO the games that are selected to be played at esports tournaments are not. That's where the beauty of matchmaking comes in, you can either dumb down games like CoD or Halo does and have a low skillcap, or you can provide a matchmaking service have a high skill celiing and just have bad players play with bad players instead of mixing them. There's some aspects of current esports titles that have been dumbed down especially in SC2 or LoL but it hasn't broken the game.

Why not mention DotA2? this game might be in beta but it already had two $1,000,000 tournaments and quite a following. SC2 has already been huge in beta also why leave these? Oh, QL has also had IEM tournaments during beta.

these are the wargames fps, I don't really know their exact genre type, but I played these titles myself ... and they don't have much in common with titles like quake, unreal tournament, warsow ... it's just a very different type of fps ... they don't have these common things like item pickups, powerups ... many different weapons ... how many weapons can you hold in these games at one time, about 2? your health recharges when you are long enough off combat? ... their arena is some kind of open territory ... quake-like games have many corridors ...
no, these games are not dm games ... they are just different ...

I don't know hawken, but it looks interesting, because at least it seems to have some jump n run elements in it ... quake has also jump n run elements like bunny hopping, double jumping, strafe jump, rocket jump ... things that cod halo completely lack ... but in hawken there also does not appear to be any ammunition/health/powerups lying around ... and the maps seem also to be more open areas ... so not what I'd consider classic dm like quake or unreal tournament ...

EDIT: jusy wanna add that there are many vertical differences in the maps in quake/ut whereas in cod-games you more or less just fight on one flat ground ...
all in all these factors make classic dm much more complex ...
nowadays games are just adapted to low-iq console n00bs ...
and just because they represent the majority of gamers it does not mean that I have to agree with them

Just how dumb can people be to not be able to separate game's genre and its actual gameplay and design? Game in any, even the most esoteric genre can be incredibly popular if you don't force it to be boring crap.
E.g. why is Warsow unpopular? Because it's a hardcore FPS? No, because their developers made series of incredibly poor design decisions, so that first thoughts of new player who runs it is "WTF is this" and "fuck it, I quit" after 5 seconds. They haven't even thought the game through the eyes of new player, so almost no newcomer has courage to even play their first game because they are overwhelmed with nonunderstandable crap surrounding them.
And why is Portal popular? Because you just hit "Play" and you completely understand what to do. And then by the time the tutorial part finishes, you are already so immersed in the atmosphere that you want to continue, even if before you didn't felt that puzzles are particularly interesting to you.
This all has nothing to do with genre whatsoever, just basic design of game's introduction and careful testing on beginners.

Tell me, why there can't be competitive 1v1 hardcore shooter that is: 1) fun, 2) not hard to get into, 3) can give you easy game with your friends, 4) has nice graphics?

Stuff like this does attract more "casual" players, but that does not hurt gameplay in ANY way. All it is does is attract players, which is something the Arena FPS genre needs. It's funny how people are calling it "dumbed down" when all you know about it is that it has an additional feature. That is anything but dumbed down.

All MMORPG, MOBA and F2P FPS do this, it attracts new players and gives them something to aim for (oh look if I play 5 more games I can get this cool new Hat for my Scout in TF2, aso.). Ok in most of those games the items actually give you some kind of bonus effects but still, it's mainly the collecting-addiction (the one that made Diablo such a bestseller).

I don't worry about playing QL. I am worried that in other gaming communities my nickname will be connected to this unjustified ban. Maybe I will write a followup journal entry, but I can't estimate if and when.

Making movies and being unbanned afterwards is like a mockery towards ID, because ZeroQL has been unbanned, after he has done a few fragmovies, as sort of community work. I guess that is what Anhedonided is referring to. I can only question that, and this belongs to another topic, not this here.

Also QL doesn't have a connection with RB imo, they are both independent, so if you boycott one thing, you don't need to boycott RB.

No, I like what id does very much*, id has brought me many hours of fun, besides QL, all the Doom, Quake and Wolfenstein titles. I'm gettin' old i guess. I remember I've played Q1 (singleplayer) with a match (you know, to light a fire) clamped at the freelook-button to constantly press it , for constant freelook. Hehe. I thought I was being really smart there. Well, it worked perfectly though.

So it would be kinda stupid to sit here behind my pc, mighty busy boycotting id, and in the meantime staring dumb at a black screen -like a mouse looking out of a haystack, or more like a deer looking into the headlights of a car- totally convinced that there must be some id boss out there who's at any moment gonna say: "Hey, that cool dude is boycotting us, so he's probably been banned from QL for playing very often without paying (or so), which we shouldn't have done, let's take some action and grant him access to QL again".

Some nice work for concept art. Proportions are a bit skewed and I see no reason why robots should have toes. Still, very impressive for a first look, much more than I expected. The iterations to follow will only improve. I'm ready for this game.

I think it's important for developers to put energy in attracting a broad range of players to keep a game running. For that, you need different kinds of gameplay. But not too many different levels, not too many different weapons. Easy to learn. Still, hard to master, to keep it challenging.

Yeah. So, to kil the monotony, bring some diversity to the game, by being inventive and throw in mods on a regular basis.
I know, that's what they are trying to do in QL.
But in QL, I do not get the feeling that much effort is being put into it. There are so many options to make a game more diverse.
But at this point, they are slowly moving every real fan into the position of having to get premium or pro subscription, to be able to play the games they want.
But taking away all the good stuff from standard players, scares those players away, and makes the game less and les attractive for new folks to join. So QL will end up with only a few addicted pro players (of which I would've been one weren't I banned mistakenly).
Forecast for 2020: Not good.
For me, being slaughtered by Yakumo, Trajan, Medixza, fz, my good ol' fast typing buddy Meadows or any other respected (european) player, never was a reason to quit the game. They only made me try harder. So I think different skill levels are less important.
I myself just hope this new game won't be very different from Quake(Live).
At this moment I'm 'forced' to hook up with other games, like Xonotic, which is fun too, but it made really clear to me that it's really annoying to have to learn everything all over again. Movement, weapons, levels, favourite settings, even friends. The whole shabam.
However, there's a difference between choosing for something else (like Av3k) and being forced to.
Only, my opinion is just one out of thousands.
But of course, my opinion is the most important one :-)
Most important message: receive new players with open arms, and show them the respect that they deserve. Ultimately, it wil pay off. It's not that hard.
