Beating Reflex wont be easy. If everything the Reflex devs have planned gets completed to a good standard then the game will be insanely good.

If not CPM movement, then there need to be other kinds of movement that takes skill and a long time to master, otherwise the game will be bland and boring for an arena shooter, IMO.

Cool to see the project is still alive. I just don't get why 2GD needs to be so juvenile towards the other developers. It's good for us gamers to have several teams working on the next arena game. Competition drives progress.

I think what he said was - Toxikk is a disaster and Reflex is average. That seems rather harsh because both are still early access and under development. Reflex has at least 4 parts I find exceptional (ignoring the gameplay):

1. 1000hz input decoupled from framerate
2. great netcode
3. map editor
4. server side demos

If he calls the game Reflex is going to be average then I'd be very surprised if he doesn't deliver something below average. Even or maybe especially if you ignore gameplay.

The gameplay hasnt changed since he put the alpha out. He detailed his "finalised" gameplay ideas a month ago, we just need to wait for them to be implemented.

Everything else seems to be engine changes and him gathering art stuff. Seems like his engines are running way faster in 2015 than they were last year.

Reflex annoys me because it's based on the Achilles heel of Quake 3. A mod that fundamentally split the community, basically halfing the potential user base - and for what, nostalgia? People criticize anyone who wants to make a game like Quake, they say "you just want a game that you are used to!" But isn't that what the QW fans were doing in CPM? lol the irony.

At least Reborn is something unique, original and designed by an ex quake 3/4 player :)

Maybe someday reborn will do all that, meanwhile reflex gives us something to play today, right when QL sold itself to the devil. If 2gd would have given the project priority and resources, it would have been a great time to strike at least an open beta already.

It has enough numbers to keep a decent debugging/testing playerbase, which is all that an alpha state game needs. Time will tell.

But you are contradicting yourself there. First you say that Reflex gives us something to play today (#61), followed by that the game has enough numbers for being in a debugging/testing phase (#83), which implies that without that adjective they aren't good numbers at all in order to give us something to play today. What is it then and if you prefer the first answer then:
- Does Reflex have a single player in our location, or at least a dozen in NA or in anywhere else besides in Europe? Without enough players there's not something for us to play today.
- Why would anyone today prefer Reflex over CPM? CPM is already finished, has more than 20 concurrent players in the world and offers the same gameplay and way more content and features than what Reflex does today.


As a project the only key differences between Reborn and Reflex are that:
1.- Reborn was the pioneer; the one that made people once again care about this subgenre. Then other games started because of Reborn and even copied specific aspects of it, including Reflex and Overwatch.
2.- Reflex is heavily based on an existing game (Q3 CPM), whereas Reborn is more innovative. Drawing a new picture takes more time and effort than tracing an existing work.
3.- The Reflex devs decided to have a paid alpha/beta testing phase (though in actuality it isn't an "open" beta since it's paid), that due that the Kickstarter for that game failed. On the other hand in Reborn 2GD decided the opposite. He obviously has his own reasons for that, including that it indeed is a bit nasty to ask people to pay for beta testing something (plus the Reflex devs have never said there won't be a second payment for the full game).

Also they share key similarities:
1.- Same genre.
2.- Both started around the same time period, as "newborn" confirmed Reflex started around December 2012 (still after Reborn and heavily inspired on it though). On that note, if anyone is going to complain about Reborn's lackluster pace then they should complain about Reflex's too, because both have been progressing veeeery slowly and both are in the same alpha state. It's just that Reflex is more public on that development (though still paid), but both are just pre-alphas with engine work starting over two years ago and still are going to be fully released after HL3.

Painkiller is a 2004 game. Severity and PMX never really existed. Shootmania is a different genre really, not what Doom, Quake and UT represent.

Before Reborn there were zero games of this genre being developed. Once that announcement was made the whole interest for it revived, so that companies saw the opportunity to jump on this ship. That's why Reborn spawned all the many current projects on the works of this "arena" FPS subgenre and without it most likely there wouldn't be a single one, just like it was the case before Reborn.
As for specific instances on which you can see the existence of the Reflex project is due to Reborn, well there's newborn's nickname (he used a different one before), the in-game map editor is the exact same and it was only introduced by Reborn, the momentum the Reflex kickstarter once had was because of reborn's delays, etc. etc. etc. We've talked this many times here and again, it's really, really obvious.

The 'arenas' project stopped solely because of a complete lack of sponsors. Without sponsors there are no events and events and organizers themselves (in this case 2GD) have nothing to do with QL itself not being attractive to brands.

With QL (and id software) being the key issue that's stopping tournaments is that 2GD decided to create his own game, because no one else (not one) was making theirs at the time.

The same happened to faceit and I don't see anyone here criticizing faceit for that. QL itself was the problem they stopped supporting QL, so your hate speech should go towards the company in charge of QL.

Yeah, there are rules to critical thinking. Consider the context. He's a developer who wants to publish a game, and he's dissing other developers that want to or have already published games. He is competing with these other developers. He's creating a game in pretty much the exact same genre. He's talking shit about other projects and has very little, past or present, to show for his own efforts. The words unprofessional and nonsensical come to mind.

Now I come along and call out this crap. I am an audience to his show, and my only stated critique is of his unprofessional social graces with regard to the other devs. The only prerequisite required of me is that I have a good idea of and a respect for professionalism. Cubes, basic physics and weapons, some ui stuff etc... i can make it in 2 month on unity or ue4 working after main job.

they are working out their own engine as far as i know.

i know. But engine is not so important.
Look at Toxikk and Reflex. Toxikk is on UE 3. Good graphics but it is ut04 clone. Reflex is on their engine, it has ability to build levels in game(it is awesome but),it is q4-cpma clone. Results are the same 50 ppl online.
Now look at Reborn...

1) Draw a bunch of pictures
2) Talk about all the cool shit it’s going to have and do

Last week when he said "weapon concepts" I naïvely thought he meant 'concepts for weapons' as opposed to 'weapon concept art'. The strategy at this point seems pretty clear; make it pretty and swish so that it’ll succeed on Kickstarter. Unlike Reflex the amount funded is less important than simply succeeding so the actual goal will be much less.

Meanwhile he’s begging the community to make content for him, for free, but also slagging people off for charging for early access. He’s perfectly fine with ripping off Warsow and UT4 map aesthetics though.

he did talk in length about how he doesn't like that map concept because its too warsow-ish.
also i remember him showing (his current vision of) how the weapons would actually function a few months back.
i wouldn't call it begging for free either, he has said that he would try to work out a system so that content creators get something out of doing stuff.
i don't want to seem like i'm brownnosing him but i feel like people give him too much shit here sometimes because they have known about his promised game long before most, and have grown tired of him not delivering.

People give him shit because he hasn't got a game; he's just got a rudimentary engine, some concept art and some assets.

What is Reborn going to offer that will make me want to play it over X?

Despite having years to answer this question in at least some way his only answer so far has been "Robots"Mutators/Classes and there isn't even any real detail about those.

Is it just going to be more of the same Q3A?

Plenty of other games have answered this - whether one finds their answers appealing or not - and are either already playable or there are videos of the game being played with detailed descriptions of how it works.
