Doesn't work like that because the European and North American votes will be split between several choices, while the South American vote will be united in their support for Bichito. He will also pull lots of sympathy votes and protest votes from the other communities. Also if he does display any flash of potential then he'll get a huge following as the underdog.

I remember playing with [X]PIPI a long time ago before he went to QuakeCon and he was an excellent player on some maps, capable of causing an upset, but didn't perform so well on the day when he went to QCon. The issue is with the integrity of the tournament, and the fact that winners should progress based on merit as in any fair game.

The comments here are fairly unanimous in pointing out how ridiculous this decision is. I realise that they're trying to engage the community and get a buzz going on Facebook, but what they're doing here is weak and quite patronising. First cutting the open tournament, now trying to turn this thing into American Idol... that will only serve to alienate the community. The community in Quake is much older and more astute than other games, they won't lap up gimmicks like this one.

i think bichito is going to win against chaoticz. I asked an ecuadorian player about this and he told me he beats him regularly even with the ping disadvantage, so chaoticz can't be that good.

What's the problem? Still gettng the top 12 in, it's quite common for tournaments using groups to have only the top 2 players advance anyway. The rest of the guys should be thankful that even after being raped and not making the top 12 they have a chanve for more games.

This is hardly a popularity contest. only FOUR people of TWENTY FOUR will get voted for. This is out of the 12 remaining who are not top 2 in each group.

If this was a popularity contest, no one would play and you'd just vote for who you want in the finals. This is an intelligent way to get longer coverage of quake games - get Quake Live recognised further by the general public and generally publicise the game even more.

It's an interesting twist on a tight community, lots of different things will happen during Quakecon which will make people have new opinions of new and different professional players.

For the people who are already engraved members of the community, it means we get to see more high level duel action and potentially see some crazy semifinals/finals.


I for myself, would love to see the australian players make it to the play-offs and compete over some nail-bitingly tense games. The players who are talented enough and can withstand the pressure will be the ones who come out on top, not purely the ones who can whore their facebook friends together. I can sympathise with those who think it's Quake-Idol time, but at the same time why are you against something that is promoting the game even more so.

Because a democratic system such as this is open to corruption, you don't get to the money-rounds (even though you or your sponsors spent so much money flying you from Antarctica).

This is actually a really good idea: after the group stage, hold a 'Mr. QuakeCon' pageant for the 3rd- and 4th-placed finishers. Do a talent show, answer questions about how you'd like to change the world, and for the grand finale, a swimsuit contest. Then the crowd votes, and the top four advance.

But I do agree that ONLY 3rd place finishers should enter the voting, this would reduce backfiring potential (undeserving players getting their homies to vote) which would be bad for quakecon and viewers.

You're talking about picking 4 players out of 12 non qualifiers each of whom would most likely lose first or second round anyway.. if a player does horribly in the group stage but still gets voted in, THEN he has to go through cypher, cooller, rapha or avekk first round right after that.

So this might work out. Hopefully this can't be exploited somehow, because I bet some players already have idea of what the bracket might look like given certain wins/loses. Also I hope this gimmick doesn't turn into american idol or used to troll.

Leaving aside the general silliness of the idea, how is this supposed to work in practice? As far as I can see there's nothing to stop it degenerating into a sockpuppet face-off.

For example, there is group with rapha, stermy and australian dude zlr. And let's say that he turns out to be so good, that he actually manages to beat rapha. And rapha beats stermy, and stermy by some chance beats zlr in two 7x overtime maps, and there is 3-way tie in group. And unfortunately, let's say that map win/loss count put zlr only on 3rd place and out of the group, even though he beat rapha and had very close maps with stermy. Then we can vote for zlr and still get him to his fair place in playoffs.
If it degenerates into anything silly, it will be only community's fault which is unable to handle such responsibility.

What I mean is, how will they stop an over-enthusiastic supporter (or group of supporters) from registering 100 'fake' facebook accounts and spamming the poll with votes for their favourite? That wouldn't be the fault of the community at large, it'd be a few people ruining it for everyone.

Most people will probably stick to voting with their own account and maybe a sister's/friend's/girlfriend's/dog's and a fake or two if they're desperate. But when there's money involved (in this case a small chance of prizemoney, and maybe more importantly extra exposure for sponsors) you can't assume nobody will take it to the next level and stage some large-scale attempt at rigging the poll

because the people who will be voted for never had a chance at top 3...so it doesn't really matter...and those who weren't voted for didn't either.

Players have sponsors though. Presumably the sponsor gets more exposure the deeper their player goes in the tournament, and in their eyes exposure = money, or they wouldn't bother in the first place.

Anyway I didn't mean to start some big conspiracy theory, I don't expect any massive rigging. But it seems to be an easily-exploited system, and unfortunately easily-exploited systems are usually exploited by someone to some degree. Even if it's just a few people voting from multiple accounts, it cheapens the whole thing even further.

Despite the amount I'm writing about all this though, I don't care too much and I agree it's not a big dela. It just makes the holw thing seem even more dodgy if they don't have any way of preventing cheating.

The best and and most popular players have less incentive and less worry about their finishes.. as they know in the end.. if they are popular and people want to see them play.. they will get the votes to stay in. I understand the whole facebook thing..but there are a lot of other ways in which to get a bunch of people to your fb page during the 90 minutes that wont take away from the competition of the event.

You are missing the point that by this vote you only affect who enters the competition, you don't affect the competition itself and its outcomes.
If cooller won't play a match - he will be eliminated from the bracket by another player, and no vote can change this. Your vote only injects a few people in the bracket, but you have no influence whatsoever on competition between them.

If something lessens the value of a win, it affects the competitive aspect. It's true that it won't matter in the playoffs, but we could lose some fun-to-watch group games.

How does this system lessens value of a win? A win means same thing as before.
Maybe you can say that it lessens effect of a loss somewhat, but remember that player is not guaranteed to be chosen by community, so he has to show to us that he deserves to be voted for, so IMHO, this system does not decrease stimulus to compete and even probably encourages low seed players to play as best as possible, and not just to imitate close matches by +backwhoring, but to display a distinctive and interesting style.
However, in particular case of QCon, everything might be totally ruined because schedule won't allow us to see those low-seed group games to objectively decide.

This idea isnt 100 percent bad like some people would have you believe, it just basically enables the people who have travelled long distances etc a 2nd chance, and doesnt really undermine the comp to begin with, as if you win, you will be given a passage through to the finals regardless most likely with a decent seeding, where as if u lose u get somewhat of a 2nd chance draw to go through to probably play the top 4 players and most likely lose. Also when i see dkt etc sooking at this, id have thought this would be good for u, as if u lose u still have a chance? especially playing tox whom u will probably lose to. the only reason i can see that you would complain is that u dont think people will vote for u? maybe shouldnt have thrown that chair moite ;)

I guess this is a silly solution to a problem that could have been avoided organizing the slots and groups differently. However, if this is the price to go from 16 to 24 slots, I think it is fine.

I'm actually curious to see how it will work out. I'm guessing that it will just go smooth, and all the fuzz people are making now will just disappear. Remember the controversy after ESL/Carmac decision about replaying those 30 seconds in t4? Retrospectively, it was just fine (helped by how exciting those 30 sec were).

Now here we are more at the level of "let the group losers arm-wrestle their playoffs spot!!1!", which is not exactly uber professional. However, in the worse case, this may just end up with some unexpectedly easy playoff match-ups for some of the players who would arrive at the top anyways, the same thing that would happen if the total slots were 32, adding 8 randoms.

In the perspective of the players, I guess something based on the performances would be better, like 4 groups of 6, 1st qualifies directly, 2nd and 3rd cross among groups to qualify on a second instance. Or adding just 8 randoms and do a classic bracket.

Anyways, I'll make some popcorns and enjoy the show.

i think it devalues the competition. tournaments should be as objective and unbiased as possible, where only your quake performance matters. that's sports, not a popularity contest, not reality tv. if you didn't make it on the field you didn't earn it.

it's not the end of the world. it does fill in otherwise vacant spots, and there's the advertisement factor you mention. but really all of this could have been avoided with adequate preparation. it seems like they started planning the event just two or three weeks ago. is this the first quakecon or the sixteenth?

So if player X was in rapha/stermy group, beat rapha, had close match with stermy and was left out on 3rd place only because bad map statistics in a 3-way tie, and player Y was in czm/noctis group, and noctis was lazy, didn't practice, and just ragequitted all his games and placed last and basically gifted player Y his brackets place, then Y earned his place and X did not?
You seem not to realize that reality is more authentic than ideal tournament models. If model contradicts reality, it's the latter that should be believed, and that voting is just something that attempts to fix flaws in imprecise theoretical model ("any first 2 players in any group are better than any last 2 in any group")

I understand some people have easier groups than others but that doesn't justify doing it this way. Even if tournaments always did this, there still would be people that did really well but didn't quite make it, or people who were luckier with the groups than others. This is why it's important to make the groups as balanced as possible. Also comment #208.

Basically, this system cannot do anything bad (seriously, give even a single example, where this voting system ruins ANYTHING). But it can potentially fix some unlucky situations and balance brackets better. So it is better than just doing groups->brackets.

Imagine if cooller was playing a match that he had to win in order to come 2nd in his group. The match would be less exciting to watch because everyone would already know that even if cooller lost he would be voted into the playoffs. Cooller also might not fully commit himself during the game because of this.

It is NOT our place to 'help make things right' with the groups/brackets.. you seem to have a very odd sense of reality my friend. I have been running online and real life gaming/sporting events for over 15 years and I just can not wrap my brain around how you can not see how this could change not only outcomes of matches but individual incentive. Just the fact that its thrown into the mix .. changes the mentality of the entire event. I just cant see how you do not understand this.

Everyone has an opinion on the groups and how things stack up and who should be in what group and so on... and that's exactly why you put more math into the equation and not 'popularity'.

Its just a bad idea for the competition. Is it a 'fun' idea.. sure.

Hey.. marketing wise..its a good idea.. maybe. The results of that are still to be decided. If the people voting for the players are mostly already quakelive players.. and the fact that (imo) most gamers separate FB life from their gaming life.. I am not sure how that will drive more users to quakelive. I could think of several other ways to get new users and create more interest in QL then this... but oh well. maybe... there's payout for top 3 places. anyone trying to get by on votes is dumb. the top players will advance because they're better,. those who get voted back in were never going to place top 5 anyways. this voting will have no effect on the tournament outcome.

Every time you think that they've done as much harm as they can to Quake, they find something new to fuck up.

QL being dropped from IEM and ESWC was super effective rocking the QL scene, but we found some composure with a helping hand up from MLG and Tox showing what were capable of.
Nevertheless an inevitably blunder from 2GD giving a low blow to both MLG and Quake which put the final nail in the coffin.

Consequently making QuakeConn a wake for the once loved game but yet some how ID mange to screw that up to, making what was suppose to be a celebration of a genre, into a popularity contest.

I don't see how anyone could be affected by this, 12 players will be chosen based on their performance which means that those 12 are probably better then the 4 remaining anyway.
id shoves the responsibility of voting for the right guys in the community's hands which is totally fine, if you want to see scores like 30-0 then fine, go vote for some bullshit player just for the fun of it. Else it's better to vote for players who you believe truly have a chance. I'm sure going to watch the players performances and base my votes on that rather then a guy who doesn't stand a chance (unless Tony somehow does not make it through the brackets)

I think this is good and hope it really gets some visibility for QL. Don't want it to become a standard way of doing things though but the possible publicity is much needed and unlike some alarmists here would like us to believe, this does NOT mean it will become a popularity contest. Every player can still get into the playoffs purely by their own doing. A few will just get lucky but nobody can say the top 3 will be the result of a popularity contest.

but you do raise a good question, will they just add randomly each player to the group to advance ? or will you be able to vote for one person per group only , so the system stays intact , if 3from each group advanced.So the first placed plays the 3rd ,2nd vs 2nd...?

my issue with it is that while I understand the desire to appeal to the masses (ala facebook) I also know that this style of interaction (reality tv) is only going to attract the lowest common denominator, and those people aren't going to start playing quake anyway, because they're perma-noobs.

This would be "fair" enough, except for the fact that Cooller has a disproportionately high number of facebook fans (as others have pointed out). Still, Cooller is good fun to watch so I like the idea of giving him this safety net.

If they really want to do the facebook thing, they should have people FB vote for the losers to enter a ffa series. Winner gets a fancy computer or a lock of John Carmacks hair etc. That would be the best of both worlds. id gets to try to enter the FB world and the tournament isn't tainted.

No, they should make it a, for the players, pointless MVP poll and randomly throw stuff (their new games? QL subscriptions?) out to the voters or something instead.

i'm guessing 90% of people trashing the decision here haven't even read the post, just who's the author of it and started trashing (cause that's what you do best :)). it's not like those 4 extra players that go to playoffs will take place of some of the 12 best that qualified their way to playoffs... they've just expanded the brackets for people like ziel, ventz, zlr, dkt, chance, linkin, draven, etc to prolong their stay at qcon longer then 60 minutes of gametime.

Syncerror, how does it feel ruinning a great opportunity of having small local LAN tournaments everywhere like in 1999-2000 golden Q3 era, with actual social interaction, no ping, etc, withouth needing to buy a plane ticket worth 3 months of salary overseas in order to experience that (that is if there is possibility to play without being invited) in one of those 3, 4 tournaments max per year, because the idiots at id decided that you should not be able to create LAN games?

I like the idea, but they carried it out completely wrong. Id is trying to appeal to people who are already following the scene and will be watching the tournament anyway, but in an assinine way.

This completely taints the spirit of the competition for me and many other people. Any legitimate competition needs to be 100% completely non-bias.

Having some sort of simple Facebook competition is a good idea, but it needs to be something along the lines of: "Design a Quakecon logo" contest. The top-voted QC graphic will be displayed at the tournament. The top 5-voted graphics get free premium quake live for 3 months.

Doesn't have to be exactly that of course, just any little competition or vote that won't piss off most of your already dwindling fans.
