The Dignitas Quake player
"
HELL", who had one of the most original nickname ever, is no more. The welsh man had enough of his old nick and will now be known as Aaron-Anton "
Vizari" Jones.
Also he decided to give his
website some more content with a new video tutorial each week, starting next week. A download section should appear very soon with cfg and HUD files, demos and more.

Tuesday being the update day for
Quakelive, the guys from id Software got busy this afternoon and released a
new update of their game and website 3 weeks after the last changes. The complete changelog can be found on the
Quakelive's dev forum or just below.
- Fixed an issue that would cause one flag to go missing during a CTF match.
- Fixed issues with s_musicvolume and s_volume getting reset to pre-defined values rather than user settings.
- Fix for on-screen damage indicator. The effect was incorrect. Three new cvars have been added as well to modify the effect. (cg_screenDamage, cg_screenDamage_Self, cg_screenDamage_Team)
- Fix for spectator overhead name text popping during scaling.
- Console timestamps fixed when using the "echo" command.
- Changes to shotgun pellet spread. Inner ring now does more damage than outer ring, for a total of 110 damage.
- cg_hudfiles will now default back to ui/hud.txt when incorrectly set.
- OSX: (10.6 specific) Sound issues resulting in extremely loud audio should be fixed.
- OSX: Sound mixing speed fixed.
- OSX: Right mouse button fixes.
- OSX: Game window now always on top.
- Linux: Mouse now properly returns to the middle of screen when leaving a menu under in_dgamouse 1. Should help with mouse focus issues.
- Added cg_HitBeep <0/1/2/3> (default: 1) to play different tones based on the amount of damage done to an opponent. 0 = off, 1 = single tone (old style), 2 = new multi-tone option, 3 = reverse multi-tone option.
- Added cg_crosshairHitStyle <0-8> (default: 0) to allow the same information given by cg_HitBeep to be displayed via the crosshair. Styles breakdown as follows:
0 = Off (the default)
1 = Colorize the crosshair based on damage dealt.
2 = Colorize the crosshair to color designated by cg_crosshairHitColor.
3 = Pulse the crosshair. (This is an exaggerated/scaled pulse)
4 = Colorize by damage and Pulse the crosshair.
5 = Colorize by cg_crosshairHitColor and Pulse the crosshair.
6 = Pulse the crosshair with a smaller pulse. (same size as the cg_crosshairPulse uses when picking items up)
7 = Colorize by damage and pulse with smaller pulse.
8 = Colorize by cg_crosshairHitColor and pulse with smaller pulse.
NOTE: If using the exaggerated pulse, you may want to set your cg_crosshairSize to 16, as the default 32 can be a bit overboard.
- Added cg_crosshairHitColor <1-7> (default: 1) for hit styles that have a fixed color. For example, some players simply want the crosshair to turn red when a hit is made, rather than change color based on damage applied.
- Added cg_crosshairHitTime (default: 200) to allow players to modify the amount of time the crosshair hit effect is displayed.
- Added cg_screenDamage <0xRRGGBBAA> (default: 0x700000C8) to colorize the on screen damage indicator; use "cg_screenDamage 0" to disable.
- Added cg_screenDamage_Self <0xRRGGBBAA> (default: 0x00000000) to toggle the on screen damage indicator for self damage. (for example, damage from rocket jumping)
- Added cg_screenDamage_Team <0xRRGGBBAA> (default: 0x700000C8) to colorize the on screen damage indicator for team damage; use "cg_screenDamage_Team 0" to disable. (Friendly Fire in Team Deathmatch)
- Added cg_zoomOutOnDeath <0/1> (default: 1) to reset player FOVs back to normal on death. This is useful if you use the cg_zoomToggle cvar.
NOTE: The new cg_hitBeep and cg_crosshairStyle additions give you an idea of how well placed your shot was. They do not indicate how much health/armor your opponent has.
- Players accounts that have been banned for violating the Terms of Use are now noted as being 'suspended' on their account profile.
- Added the build number to the plugin download filename
- You can now hover over the various "Time Played" fields on your profile to see the exact amount of time that you've played in the given context.
- Players who haven't played a game in over a month will now have their profile properly display that rather than saying they have never played a game.
- Fixed a problem where valance background graphics weren't being served from the CDN
- Fixed a problem where players could get onto the site when they were unable to connect to the XMPP network. Now the site will block you at the loading screen until it is able to successfully establish the XMPP connection.
- Fixed problems where the sharing buttons on match details and news articles weren't working under certain circumstances.

2v2: 41% (91)
CTF: 34% (74)
TDM: 20% (44)
I don't care: 5.4% (12)
With the
announcement of Quakelive TDM being part of the incoming ESL Major Series 5 with €1,000 cashprizes, some may think that TDM isn't really perfect for this cup. Reasons could be the poor maplist, the lack of top clans or even the enforced pro-TDM settings.
The alternative options would clearly be CTF or 2v2. So what you think?

I just thought I'd check the sign-ups of the GotFrag/MLG/GameBattles QuakeLive tournaments today to see how they're doing (
old news). I was really curious about that cup for 2 reasons: for it seemed to be an ambitious online project and for the whine around the sign up fees / the cashprize.
Remember the stuff was planned for 128 duelers and 64 CA teams in a country without any solid online community and where we haven't never heard about big online quake tournaments since... well, maybe since the 2v2 QC3 cup which ended in a quite a joke when it came to hand the prizes to the winners (
old drama is always good drama).
So back to fresh news, the sign-ups are closing tomorrow and so far only
6 duelers and
1 CA clan are in. It came to my mind that, as the GotfFag guys just censored comments in their announcement, the admins must have censored some subscriptions to end up with such a small amount of players. Or maybe I'm just misguided and they're not really displaying all the sign-ups from these pages.
How come we don't see more cool stuff like the
Alienware Arena thing from North America?

How to play back QL demosToday the QuakeCon guys finally managed to post the
demos of the 2009 tournaments. But unfortunately, these guys also lost ALL the demos from Saturday (that could be related to the power failure they experienced), and it includes all the finals played on this day.
However, rapha saved all his demos on his USB drive and then shared them with carmac before losing his USB drive. Lately it seems like carmac managed to find them back on his laptop and here we are: All QuakeCon 09 demos from rapha in a pack.
Thanks to carmac and rapha. Enjoy!

After the
announcement of an
IEM QuakeLive Pro/Am Challenge tournament at Gamescon this summer, we were left without much details. A few days ago
Rondrian has posted a German news with all the details which has now been
translated.
Most of the tournament will be played on Friday 21st of August. Then on Saturday its Final will be played on stage and streamed on ESL-TV. Only the winner will be rewarded with $1,000, but 8 players will get the chance to play in this tournament.
Two online qualification cups will be held and each will grant the top2 players a slot for the IEM QuakeLive Pro/Am Challenge (sign-ups are already open). The other 4 slots will be open to sign-up at Gamescon starting on Friday at the
ESL Intel Gamezone booth.

Danijel "
StreeT" Remusn from
fnatic, who's going to have a busy Sunday, managed to find some time to ask a few questions to the Swedish party animal that Sebastian "
spart1e" Siira stands for. Here is what you can expect from that read:
Fnatic.com: Who do you think your biggest competition will be at Quakecon?
Spart1e: Rapha. Really smart player thinking 5 steps ahead of his opponent. But fox will also be in really good shape, unless I play him in the final that is, hihi.
Feel free to read the rest at

This afternoon was announced the new owner of the brand
ESWC, which was part of a bigger package. For 50 000€,
Stéphane Cosse with his society
DIP Communication now owns the many domain names affiliated with the brands, including ESWC. The French part of what's left of Games-Services was also included in the package, with brands such as "La Coupe de France des Jeux Vidéo" and "la Coupe du Monde des Jeux Vidéo".
The man is based in the south of France and already has a reputation in the international esport scene. He was the manager of the gaming center and CS team
Adéclik back in 2000, which also held the
Clickarena event in may 2003. This LAN is still remembered for its bad organization and some unpaid cash prizes. Since that, Stéphane was only involved in smaller projects. An few interviews in French with him will be published later today.
Also, the "Cyberleagues" package which contained all the rankings software was bought by
Lan Festival for 1 500€.

Yes, test your psychic quake ability and see if you can guess the first frag and how it happens! the closest person to the truth will be the winner.
Example answers:
contestant 1: spart1e kills noctis with a machine gun!
contestant 2: spart1e kills noctis with a machine gun at Red armor
contestant 3: spart1e kills noctis with a machine gun at Red armor around the 2 minutes 10 second mark
contestant 4: spart1e kills noctis with a fish! A dangerous new weapon thats never before seen in quake! but will surely be hotfixed in before the match proceeds...
Now, Had spart1e killed noctis with a machine gun over at Red armour around the 2 minutes 10 second mark contestants 1,2 and 3 would all be correct, but the one who went into the most detail, making his guess more unlikely but more precised. will be the winner. Since
QuakeLive went public at the end of last February, the majority of the tournaments being held were about duel. But with the addition of private servers for organizers and more recently of a few "competition" features, it all became a lot easier for team-based matches. Now the TDM & CTF cups are growing in numbers since the beginning of summer:
ClanBase is currently running a TDM 4v4 Featured cup with cherubim, Reason-Gaming, d? and LowLandLions in the Division 1 semi-finals. And also a CTF 4v4 Summer cup which started directly on single elimination playoff.
Maplist: CTF - qzctf2, qzctf3, qzctf7, qzctf8, qzctf10 / TDM - qzdm6, qzdm7, qzdm14, qzdm20
ESL just published the groups for their CTF 4v4 and TDM 4v4 cups and are still accepting clans. It was initially planned to have a pro TDM and a TDM cup, but they're now holding a big pro TDM cup with 2 divisions. These will start very soon.
Maplist: CTF - qzctf2, qzctf3, qzctf7, qzctf8, qzctf10 / TDM - qzdm6, qzdm7, qzdm14, qzdm20, qzca2
Kuh3Liga is also having a Summer Cup 2009 with some TDM 4v4 action and the sign-ups are now closed. The 40 clans will play their first group match this very next Sunday.
Maplist: qzdm6,qzdm7,qzdm14,qzdm20
BiBs just finished their first CTF 5v5 season last Sunday with the victory of LowLandLions over versatile Gaming and seem in a good shape to have a 2nd season after this summer.
Maplist: qzctf2, qzctf3, qzctf7, qzctf8, qzctf10

TheSpeedGamers is a group of players who attempt silly video gaming
marathons for noble causes. Most of the players are american, while some others are from Denmark, Canada or Australia.
Their marathon usually consist of finishing the main games of a franchise on a given time, for example the most popular Zelda on every console. They also provide a streaming of the marathons with a commentator and you can even chat while watching them playing from their website.
The 12th and current marathon covers Final Fantasy and aims to finish FF1, FF2, FF3, FF4, FF5, FF6, FF7, FF8, FF9, FF10 and FF12 in one week! And they're doing it to generate donations to an american organization who support families with autistic children,
ACT Today. For now only a few of the FF have been finished and they probably won't be able to make it. But more than $25,000 have already been collected.

Today seems about a good time to release more informations about the
ESL-TV QL Invitational sponsored by Razer. First the schedule has been altered due to the new
default update day for QuakeLive being Tuesday, so the shows are now planned on Mondays and Thursdays.
Also the players list will now feature 14 direct invitations and 2 qualifiers. These qualifications will take place during the first introductory show and will be followed by an exhibition match between
av3k and
Stermy. Unfortunately the Italian player won't be able to play in the tournament because of the changes in our schedule.
Last but not least, it was planned to use the same rules as the incoming QuakeCon duel tournament in order to prepare the European players who will be attending. But after some serious thinking, we decided to stick with the default European map list.
- Introductory Show: 16th July, Thursday
- Playday #1: 20th July, Monday
- Playday #2: 23rd July, Thursday
- Playday #3: 27th July, Monday
- Playday #4: 30th July, Thursday
- Finals: 3rd August, Monday
Each Playday will feature 4 players in a single elimination bracket, the winner will then join the Finals.
All the shows will start at 11:00 CST and finish at 13:00 CST.
qzdm6 (Campgrounds Redux)
qzdm13 (Lost World)
qztourney4 (Vertical Vengeance)
qztourney7 (Furious Heights)

Maps will be chosen using the elimination system. The winner of a coin toss starts removing a map, loser removes, loser picks and winner picks. Last remaining map will be used as decider if needed. Match will start on loser's map pick.
The winner of each Playday will be rewarded with 100€ and will attend the Finals.
The winner of the Finals will be rewarded with 500€ and the second with 100€.
Also Razer will provide 500€ of products for the spectators of the show.

What did they all have in common? A man named Scott Valencia ... He worked for the CPL, then for WSVG and finally went for vice-president in the CGS.
The CPL (which officially became Chinese,
www.thecpl.cn) announced their new CEO, who will most likely work in their new office in
Chengdu. The man is... Scott Valencia! Don't ask me if the man is partially responsible for the fails of these 3 companies: I strictly don't know anything about it.
Anyway, the CPL is back and they will probably hold a LAN party for fun during September in China to thank the Chinese gamers for whatever they should be thanked :)
Anybody could explain to me now please? :(
