Basic Timing Guide (176 comments)
Posted by Memento_Mori @ 15:45 CST, 17 February 2011 - iMsg

Introduction

Timing items is one of the core mechanics of Quake Live duel. This guide is intended for beginners and mid-tier duel players, and aims to provide the basic knowledge on top of which dedicated players can improve their timing skill. Remember though, practice is the key to success, and while this guide may help you in doing it more efficiently by focusing on the important things, there is no substitute for working hard. You need to have the will to learn.

The guide is organized in two parts. Page 1 covers the core aspects of timing, i.e. the minimum you have to do to time items properly. Page 2 covers more advanced aspects of timing in a broader sense, proposing a few rules intended to simplify the task, and build more duel understanding.

Note: This guide was originally posted as forum discussion. Part 1 has not changed, except for the text format. Part 2 was posted on a second update, and its layout has been improved.

mAdix interviewed by ESFIWorld.com (7 comments)
Posted by mki @ 13:26 CST, 6 January 2011 - iMsg
ESFIWorld.com has just interviewed Swedish Quake Live player Michael 'madix' Hindersson ahead of the IEM V European Finals in Kiev, Ukraine.

In the interview many topics were covered such as why he left Excello for Dignitas and how he is preparing for the upcoming European Finals. His predictions on who will advance are also discussed.

The whole interview can be read at the link below (exerpt also included):
http://www.esfiworld.com/ql/feature/madix-the...grets-time

As a result of the previous lack of practice, Madix knows he will not make the same mistake again. He has taken some time off from the game for now to keep his hunger and motivation at the necessary levels, however his schedule will soon be packed with Quake Live.
"My practice schedule now up until Kiev will be at least 8 hours a day of watching demos and playing high tier players. There will be no regrets this time."

2010 spawned a new white knight in our hopeful and aspring Australia Australian and New Zealand New Zealand Quake community. Players from near and far and even from other gaming communities jumped on board whilst we set soar our Oceanic champion into the International scene earlier this year. It was Quakecon 2010 to shed some excitement on our somewhat under-rated Nation and the fire only burns brighter now for the up and coming 2011 IEM World Championships. ArchaicMSI's Australia Daniel "dandaking" De Sousa speaks of life after Quakecon, his thoughts on the national qualifiers upcoming and gone, as well as his own goals for the upcoming IEM World competition. QuakeCon 2010 After Action Blog-Complete (57 comments)
Posted by GreasedScotsman @ 09:18 CDT, 19 August 2010 - iMsg
I just returned from QuakeCon 2010, bleary-eyed, exhausted, and happier than I could have imagined. Thirteen QLTV staffers descended on the event just a week ago to begin on-site preparations and setup. Throughout the week, several of them, myself included, wouldn't even get a chance to attend John Carmack's keynote, would miss the many panel presentations and wouldn't even see what vendors were strewn about the same exhibit hall in which we were about to spend the next 4 days because we all would be too busy.

In short, covering QuakeCon 2010 has been a relentless endeavor from start to finish. This literary after action report will detail my experiences as Lead Shoutcaster and unofficial manager of Quake Live TV. QuakeCon is an event built by and for the community, and I feel the community should know and understand how and why things happened the way they did this year.

QuakeCon 2010: Day 1 with DaHanG (35 comments)
Posted by Slasher @ 01:18 CDT, 13 August 2010 - iMsg
The first day of QuakeCon 2010 has concluded. Evil Geniuses' United States of America Tim "DaHanG" Fogarty is seeded 5th in duel while his team took the top spot in CTF. He faces a rather tough road ahead of him with Italy Alessandro "stermy" Avallone and nemesis United States of America Shane "rapha" Hendrixson in his path, and shares his thoughts going into tomorrow's matches.
Rod "Slasher" Breslau: You look to face stermy in the 3rd round of the bracket as your first real challenge, what are your thoughts going up against him here?

DaHanG: He's a very strong player that you can't afford to make mistakes against. I know he stepped up a bit at ESWC by defeating rapha in groups, so he's capable of playing great games. I am just hoping to feel comfortable at the tournament with my setup and just feel good in general (awake and alert). I don't think it's really worth thinking about too much though as we both are veterans and know how each other plays. It's just going to come down to who is playing better this particular match.

Players weren't able to play their first games today, what happened there?

DaHanG: Apparently the internet was down, and this is required to play the game. The internet was up later in the afternoon, but LAN servers were still not available. I don't know any technical details, but more games will be played Friday because of it - and I hope because I'm in both tournaments there aren't scheduling issues or personal fatigue. I hope things are VERY smooth tomorrow.

The full interview can be read on the next page.

Quakelive maps names & levelshot (110 comments)
Posted by xou @ 02:18 CDT, 8 August 2010 - iMsg
So Quakelive is out of beta, and now the filenames of the maps are made from the actual name of the map instead of an incremental system. This means names such as dm6, t4, ztn or hub won't be of any help when it comes to vote a map on a server.

After 10 years of using the same old names for each map, it's hard to adapt and so I decided to make a listing of the Quakelive maps with their levelshot. That should make things a bit easier. You can find a ZIP file with all the images attached.

QuakeLiveTV sits down with EG|clampOK (74 comments)
Posted by QuakeLiveTV @ 16:14 CDT, 27 May 2010 - iMsg
Our very own staff member gnnr recently got a chance to interview Sabian "clampOK" Hayblum who plays base defense for the Evil Geniuses CTF team. We talked about EG's chances at this years Quakecon tournament and about how he got started in gaming.

( QLTV|gnnr ) When did you first start gaming? Besides Quake, what are your favorite titles?

( EG|clampOK ) I first started gaming with Mario Bros. on the original NES when I was about 4. However, I'd say I really began taking gaming as more than just a fun hobby around 14 when I started playing Doom 3. I've always been a fan of First Person Shooters and Doom 3 introduced me to the competitive aspect of gaming. Other than FPS games, I'm a huge fan of StarCraft because of just how far the game can be taken. I think that ever since I was young, it was the notion of improving and being extremely good at a game that excited me even more so than actually enjoying the game itself. I'm very competitive :)

European Quake League Playoffs (7 comments)
Posted by Zalon @ 11:49 CDT, 21 April 2010 - iMsg
It's Playoff time in the European Quake League, after 7 weeks of group games, the 8 playoff teams from each division have been found. With 3 divisions we can look forward to 12 quality matches during the next 3 weeks.

To compliment the teams on a successful season with a great amount of activity, we felt the only decent thing to do was to write a preview for all of the upcoming playoff matches. We've included some info about each team, their way to the playoffs, and a prediction on the result.

Thanks to Norway Rikoll and Sweden Hooraytio for their Division 1 and Division 2 reviews.

Everyone else is free to throw in their own predictions in the comments.

The Duel Scene and New Players to It (10 comments)
Posted by Vi0Lat0Rs @ 03:58 CST, 26 February 2010 - iMsg
First I would like to make it clear that this is an opinion based on opinionated facts. This article is about how the actual scene is, and touches briefly on why the scene is in decline and or stand-still.

My name is Vincent "vi0lat0rs" Dutkevitch and I have been a participant in online dueling for about 6 years now. I started with Unreal Tournament 2004 and quickly found myself in the world of Quake. I briefly played WarSoW from .12 to .4 as well as touching on Half Life 2 DeathMatch. I would like to make it very clear that Quake is the King of One vs One Deathmatch games, but this is the problem. We have seen this game for X amount of years now, simply updated with new graphics and a few new maps. The mechanics of the game do not change. Thus making the skill gap larger and larger as years go by. As a new player trying to embrace quake, it is very difficult. You can learn the basics of the game fairly quickly, but that is as far as it goes for most. You may argue that its because of people being uncapable of playing or being just plain out bad, but I would prefer to think of it as a battle of experience, which is fine, and should be as so. Quake Live in my opinion is a great idea to "renew" this process of players learning the game on a more regular incline but it would seem as though it doesn't matter. The range of skill between bad and good is still very much apart with very little median. Players often find themselves either winning by absurd amounts or loosing by absurd amounts, and when your in that stage, what is there to do? You can memorize all of the spawns, learn how to out position people, have the aim of the gods and still be light work for a majority of players. What I am gettting at is, why are we still playing the same game, if we want to make it a sport, the sport isn't "Quake Live" the sport is One vs One DeathMatch. We have seen many failures due to games lacking at launch, examples being Quake 4, PainKiller, WarSow to name the few that come right off the top of my head. They all had terrible online quirks that set them back from being a good game for dueling ONLINE. Be it netcode, or some unbalanced game mechanics. So, we naturally fall back to Quake 3, why is that? We claim its the most balanced, which is true about the game its self, but if we want to introduce new players into the "Sport" keeping the age old game alive isn't the way because we will continue to see the same top tier players until they reach the age their reflexes start to decline, in theory anyway. At this point I may be rambling, you may think I am a whiner because I am one of these sub-par players but I think I am speaking for a high number of players, and the sport its self, we need a new game, or a tighter stat tracking for players to be matched with each other to get the quality practice they need to hit high levels of play. Thank you for reading, all comments, and additions are welcome, I am sure there are a few points I missed.

<3 ASUS Cups (88 comments)
Posted by xou @ 08:27 CST, 25 February 2010 - iMsg
As I was quickly writing the news about the ASUS Winter 2010, I thought their first Quakelive tournament would also mean the end of the Quake 3 era in the ASUS Cups. And I just couldn't imagine how much these LANs helped to keep the Quake community alive in the Eastern countries. So I just went through ALL the ASUS Cups I could find and summarized ALL their Quake rankings.

The results is impressive and it looks like they will never stop: 25 LANs featured Quake in the past 7 years for a total of 39 tournaments. I was willing to calculate the total cash prize given, but that's just too much for me at the moment. If you want to try: Be my guest!

The lost djWHEAT feature (54 comments)
Posted by Liefje @ 00:17 CST, 3 February 2010 - iMsg
This interview was made at the CGS World finals (2007) and was intended to be published in the 3rd issue of Pro Gam3r Magazine which was never released. I found it yesterday and I thought it was still interesting enough to publish today.

Obligatory quotes:
For Graham another thing to provide job satisfaction are the people in gaming. “Some people don’t understand how great the people in gaming are. Some of my best memories, whether it be with clan mates or rival team members, or other gamers, or coaches, or managers, some of my greatest memories have been at events and in gaming."
“All I can say given in terms of advice is fuckin’ get off your ass and do it”. You heard the man. The future of competitive gaming doesn’t solely rely on players, there’s more people involved in it than that. Let’s see some new faces at events. Like Marcus and other figures in the e-Sports industry, you have to take a risk. You’ve got nothing to lose from simply trying.

Click here to read the full article (or to look at more goofy pics from WCG 2002).

Since the closure of the CGS, dj Wheat has moved away from LA and continues to run several gaming shows which you can find more about on http://www.djwheat.tv .

If you're interested in more features that were in Pro Gam3r (but you never got the mag) there is also Stermy's feature.

A one-hour long int. with Cooller (101 comments)
Posted by ToyTiger @ 10:42 CST, 28 January 2010 - iMsg
Subtitles are up. Hopefully everybody who wanted to watch the video will be happy now.

This interview was taken by GG.Miker at Dreamhack, November 2009. RussiaCooller answered a few questions from Miker, then the questions proposed by people in the chat. This is as faithful rendition of the whole process as possible.

Source: the Russian version

Instructions:

To watch the subtitled video you need to download it first, from here or here . Then download the file with the subtitles and put it in the same folder with the video file. Most video players will now automatically play the video file with the subtitles shown. The file containing the subtitles should be called the very same way that the video file is called (just in case if you had an idea to rename it). Btw if you notice that English translation sometimes seems shorter than the speech, most of the time that's because Russian words tend to be longer than their English counterparts, it takes more time to say one and the same thing.
