The q3 tournament got delayed forever and ever if you have read the column, if he is not there the exact time an admin wants to play after hours of waiting he should receive a default loss? please.

The top3 should of come to the conclusion themselves that Cooller should get first, Elpajuo 2nd, and Z4 3rd, since Cooller was unbeaten, elpajuo lost to cooller, and z4 lost to cooller and elpajuo. Seemed a little unfair for cooller that first prize was shared by all three. plus it cost alot more for cooller to get to vegas. What happened to 2nd and 3rd places prizes then? they were all shared equally between the 3 aswell?

I personally don't blame clock at all for his match-throwing tactics. It's a strategic decision that he felt he had to make and he's entitled to do so. The fact that the admin could reverse such a decision DURING his game with z4 is appalling in itself.

Throwing a game is not a strategic decision, it's outright cheating. In any sport, throwing a game is strictly prohibited... Ever hear of the Black Sox Scandal? Some of the best baseball players of all time were banned from the Hall of Fame forever because they threw the World Series. Something similar would no doubt happen in England if it were discovered that a team threw a football (soccer) game. Gaming will never be legitimate if these actions are not acted on or at least expressly prohibited, simply because people don't pay to see someone throw a game, nor are you paid to lose a game.

Your example with Cooller doesn't even remotely parallel that situation. Cooller obviously threw himself at his opponent in the last minute or two of the map so that he would be killed twice and lose. You can't have watched any other Cooller demo and not realize this. Further, there is no way to be 100% sure that someone threw a game or match, but that doesn't mean there shouldn't be a rule in place prohibiting it. It would be difficult to enforce, but would at least discourage such actions. **There is no reason to implicitly allow it simply because it's difficult to enforce.**

Yeh i agree, especially considering if there is an opportunity to throw a game and thus achieve a favourable position for yourself or eliminate another competitor, it usually means there is a flaw in the tournament structure. For example in the football World Cup of 1982 the final match in one of the groups, played between Germany and Austria, would allow both teams to progress if it ended in a draw, the other final match in the group having been played earlier that day. If Austria lost they would be eliminated and one of the other teams in the group would progress, Algeria i believe; if Germany lost they would still qualify but in a less advantageous position. So knowing this, the two teams simply played through the match by watching each other pass the ball about in their own half. Since then, all final group games in the World Cup have been played at the same time, so A will play B and C will play D concurrently in order to prevent the result of one game being known and thus allowing the two remaining teams to gain an advantage from knowing exactly what they have to do.

It seems to me that this tournament and the WCG2002 in which cooller deliberately lost to ni3 in order to eliminate zero4 both suffered from a poor tournament structure comparable to that of WC 1982. I would never blame the players in an instance such as this since it's their role to ensure victory by any means necessary as long as they abide by the rules. Looking at the regulations on CXG's Quake 3 page, it does not specify that deliberately losing a match is illegal. Besides, it would be a ridiculous rule to include anyway since it is impossible to prove.

As i've stated before, these moral judgements on what a player should and shouldn't do are farcical and pointless, given that everyone has their own view of what is right and wrong. The only thing everyone has commonly agreed upon are the rules which are definitive and nonnegotiable. By all means campaign to have the rules altered but don't castigate players for simply performing their duty of striving to win in any legal way they can.

The IOC will still ban the use of a drug even though there are no reliable tests that can detect it - human growth hormone for example.

The whole point of the rules is to clarify how the game *should* be played so everyone knows where they stand. You *then* try to find ways to enforce them.

All comparisons are odious and i'm afraid that one is no exception. The IOC has tests that can detect a vast range of banned substances, so this area of sporting regulation at least has the possibility of being enforced. Despite the fact that certain tests are not wholly reliable, a great many are and thus they can frequently ensure that deviant athletes are punished. Compare this to deliberate forfeiting of matches at a gaming tournament, where a rule forbidding such an action would be utterly unenforceable as we can't even begin to determine whether or not a match was deliberately lost (short of using lie detector tests, which i don't think anyone would wish to see and which also suffer from reliability issues).

To some extent it's a moot point anyhow, given that such occasions of match-fixing can be prevented by using a suitable tournament structure as i outlined in comment 161.

Even though the flaming of cl0ck for throwing a game to zero4 is warranted, you all have to remember the environment. At the point of that game, the credibility and faith in the tournament was pretty much nil, I doubt many of the players really had the energy or interest after everything they went through to make sure the tournament was morally-fit. Had it been ESWC or something, I'm sure cl0ck would of tried his hardest....

A list of sponsors should be collected and a webpage created, for everyone who attended, that provides the addresss and emails for any company involved in donation.

Every gamer at cxg should personally write to each sponsor with a call for NO funds to be given to CXG in the future. And, enclosed, a recomendation to where their donations could be properly made use of for the benefit of the community (WCG, ESWC, CP.. eh no).

Just sounds to me like a bunch of excuses for getting his shit packed in. In fact, I wouldn't doubt that he used this whole cXg fuckup as a masquerade to use a public forum for blabbering his excuses for losing.

NEWS FLASH clock: you don't have to "throw" any match in which your opponent uses the alphanumeric string "ZeRo4" for his name. You're going to lose anyway. You're a Pervis Ellis.

The real shame is that cXg didn't just tell you outright that you would be playing ZeRo4 in round robin. That way you could have stayed home and continued to try on new outfits in a fruitless attempt to emulate socrates. Just please do NOT show up at the next LAN with spacers in your ears.

We will never know. Just like we will never know if cooller would have won the final. You can't say that one is 100% sure he's going to win. There is always a small chance that the other could win.
I mean think about it, cl0ck is good, ZeRo4 is very good.
cl0ck knows his chances are slim, if the winner of the game would advance to the next round, he would have played very serious, no doubt. But now he knew he already progressed, and then in the middle of a game the admin tells him that he still has to play elpajuo...
He didn't play 100% but know he had to, while the map was well underway. That just sucks.

Actually I told him BEFORE he played z4 that if elpaguo showed up he'd have to play him still. It was quite funny to see him immediately /ready :D

heh, ok about the "throwing of games" ZeRo4 didn't really like the idea to begin with, let alone go along with the idea. He should not be blaimed for any of the "throwing". I am not using it as an excuse, I am telling everyone exactly how things went down, I could of masked the fact that I did that sure, be this a serious tournament I would have, but the fact is that I don't care if you know i was purposely trying to lose to ZeRo4 so he advances and elpajou doesn't. And if you ask anyone around before the tournament, or people who went to the tournament, they would agree when I said i had an equal chance of beating ZeRo4 as he did me. Again, keep the comments about ths match throwing to yourself, this writeup is directed towards the admins and staff of CXG not knowing what they're doing, not to who is doing what to win, because if it were, then I would of listed a lot more "shady-buisness" then just what I did with ZeRo4. I just got home and wanna forget this 'event' for a week so ill hold off on commenting further :)

Im still in shock that probably the only golden gem of CXG Vegas, Q3 1v1 Tourney, couldn't end. No other event had coverage like we do (wheat, trill, speakeasy, citizen, red_b, rigor and countless others who helped do some part... you guys all rock and made what did get shown possible). We peaked at 1052 ppl on GTV on Sunday, averaged around 850 from what i can tell all day sat + sun and last I heard iTG had over 1000 listeners as well. Seeing the expression on Mich's, the CoD admin + 'head over all admin' imho, face when he looked at gtv and saw like 600 ppl in it and heard the other numbers was pure golden. Lee from gotfrag said that 1500 ppl were in #gotfrag -- sucks to be those 1480 ppl (20 staff or so) since that even did nothing but delay the rest.

Regardless, look at the numbers people -- specifically SPONSORS -- Q3 1v1 is NOT dead. Its alive and thriving well for players and spectators. </rant> Ill make my own post in a few weeks once I've slept for more then 3 hrs a night.

You know, the bits of CXG that I actually saw were great. Some fantastic games, and if you'd just managed to get the q3 finished, the spin on things could've been so different.

As it is, roll on ESWC.

the event did prove one thing though : elpajuo is the man.

I'll be waiting for elp to prove himself at the next event before I start saying things like that. Agreed he showed some nice stuff, but I'd like to see him do it again at a better organized tournament and maybe he'll get one of the top prizes that it seems he deserves :)

cl0ck throwing a game vs ZeRo4 has to be the most hilarious thing i've heard coming out from this event.. and there were a lot of hilarious shit that came out of this event.

cXg might as well pack up and leave, i have never even heard of anything this pathetic at an "organized event."

Uh, and how exactly could anyone expect a decent tournament when you're allowed to sign up for two of them that are going to be played at the same time? Come on Clock, while it was a horrible event you contributed to it by signing up for two tournaments and even asked for special scheduling for your Q3 matches due to that big mistake.

CPL, WCG, Quakecon and pretty much every other larger LAN makes sure that scheduling is either one event per person, or following a strict schedule to ensure no overlap. Dumb on the part of CXG and Clock.

Another question: Why exactly can't Quake 3 be played on the non-CRT monitors, while UT2003 can? UT2003 has quite a bit more high-acceleration movements (dodging/boost dodge), which makes the display more important than it would in a game like Quake 3 where speed is high but consistant. How come the UT2003 tournament went down without much trouble, while the Quakers demanded better monitors for a game that's played with super low-end graphics?

Cxg messed up big-time, but some of these problems certainly weren't improved by the actions of some of the players.

I played in the Q3 and ET tournies, no problem. Many participated in the Q3CTF/Q3 1v1 tournies without any issues either (including daler, socrates, czm, zero4...). Others participated in RTCW + ET, or RTCW + Q3 1v1, or whatever.

They don't have anywhere near the problems that CXG had, despite that.

Look, the fact that its even possible to have an advantage based on a thrown game is not evidence that the players are wrong but that THE TOURNAMENT SYSTEM NEEDS TO BE REWORKED. It should not be possible for players to pick and choose their opponents by throwing games. if cl0ck had said nothing he could have eliminated elpajuo without any public knowledge that he had deliberately thrown the games.

The fact that he couldnt have beaten zero4 anyway is irrelevant.

I mentioned before gotFrag was wrong to do the CS seedings for the CXG event due to them being American based thus being more biased, yet I got flamed with people saying its not just Americans that do the rankings it’s a panel, not true. They re did the seedings while at the event so Midway and co did them (yanks), not the panel who does the monthly gotFrag rankings as original thought.

I still think you are paranoid. It says they re-did the seedings to account for missing teams; all tournaments do this on the spot, since you can't know who is coming ahead of time. Presumably they just moved up teams that were seeded below no-shows. Or did I miss something in the article?

Anyway, you were 'flamed' because you asserted that the rankings were US-biased, when you didn't know that they came from an international poll. Even if gotfrag changed the rankings at the last minute, you were still wrong about where the rankings originally came from.

Throwing games isn't exactly a new thing as someone else pointed out the russians among others having proved to be adept at it too. It's a dilemma for sure but I guess it is in almost every real sport too. I mean you talk about it in WC Hockey group stage just as an example.

When it come to this extreme failure of a tourney I wonder if there's anyone who's seen a response from CXG?? I guess it's like rule number one that if you fuckup you should go public as fast as possible to stop all the rumours and speculations. Either they are as incompetent when it comes to PR as they are organizing tourneys but on the other hand they had summoned a rather impressive amount of prizes so I really wonder why they are all silent.

Yes exactly and that's why I thought they already should have given a statement. Of course it would be heavily biased and possibly extremely incorrect but to keep focus on what they would like the focus to be on. For example Valve or something else they could blame on.

the money for the cs was pretty much given out - 8 grudge matches were made, $10k was the prize for each of teh games.

Also there was an EU vs USA game (which never took place) for 10l. So thats most of the CS first prize money gone, what happened to the rest?

What's funny about the exhibition games for CS is that teams relatively seeded low (such as Team AMD and inevitable Fate) got to play, but high seeded teams (such as team9 and a-Losers) did not. Really seems fair that teams that were expected to do well (and thus had all the more reason to come there, especially from Europe, in hope of earning their money back) were scrapped in favor for teams that were expected to do less well, doesn't it?

Have any of the participants actually considered filing a class-action lawsuit? CxG collected money to deliver on a service they failed to provide, plain and simple. They showed gross negligence in the administration of the event and as a result personal property was stolen. It doesn't take a law student to understand they broke the law and are obligated to pay damages.

I'd like to see a subpoena go out for the accounting books of the event. It really makes me wonder how much money was actually allocated towards prizes, security, etc versus how much the organizers took away -- specifically this Joe Hill character. Did they get sponsorship for as much money as they advertised? If they can't prove it from the books, then they are guilty of faulty advertising as well. I wouldn't even be surprised if they didn't HAVE accounting books (or are pulling an Enron by shredding them :))

Anyway, it might be worth the time to get some legal consultation. Enough people lost enough money by attending that the legal costs would definitely offset so you all would at least get back something. It also would send a clear message to any future would-be organizers: deliver, or get taken to court. As of right now there have never been any repercussions for a poorly run event other than a bunch of teenagers swearing about it and stomping feet. If you guys want to legitimize yourselves, there is no better way than to win a major court decision.

In the United States the term "class-action lawsuit" means something very specific and is not a buzz word. It basically means there is a large number of people with the same complaint against a single company. Rather than have every individual take up a small claim, they all work together to present a single case. It is much easier to manage and has a much much higher chance of succeeding.

Not only that, but it's not like we're talking litigation for vengeance. Yes, there is too much litigation in the United States, and it is easy to file when you don't get your way, but in this case a lawsuit would certainly be justified. Plus, it would provide an opportunity for the executives of CXG to right a wrong by reaching a settlement with all the members of the class if they really wished to be supportive of competitive gaming. It puts them on the spot: make amends and settle the case upfront and offer to pay damages, or lose your business by going to court and fighting the case. If I was a lawyer I would offer my services pro bono because it is a win win situation either way :)

I'm not saying I "threw" the match as an excuse. i was just saying that I had intentions of MAKING SURE ZeRo4 advanced and elpajou didn't. I think elpajou is cool shit but it was just a strategic decision, if i took even ONE map from ZeRo4, he wouldn't of advanced. And I will say again, it was not ZeRo4's idea it was mine, and ZeRo4 didn't flat out agree to it. I told him my intentions and he shrugged it off. The whole reason behind sharing my intentions of throwing the match was to show that after being told I had a forfit win, I infact did not. So people don't think that ZeRo4 agreed to do this because it's not true, he had it done to him, so i'm sure he wouldnt turn around and do it to anyone else after knowing what it feels like. My intention to through the match was wrong, but I suppose I was just doing it to try to better myself in the finals, I admit it was a poor decision on my part, but I hope I got my point across with this comment that ZeRo4 had nothing to do with it, and I am not using it as an excuse what-so-ever.
